"and crashing and pounding, his rivers surround him and drown out the sound of the song he once heard: laaa la la la la la laaaa..."
happy trails to my favorite orpheus ever, reeve carney!! the fact that i never got to see him live is a tragedy. no one will ever do it like him. you do not understand how sad i am that the last original broadway cast member is leaving, and his portrayal of orpheus is so fundamental to the character. i'm officially in mourning.
fly high, king ✊🏽😔 (he's not dead, just leaving)

I know that “this part of a piece of media that is widely considered a flaw is a reason that it’s good, actually” is like. pretentious dude 101. but I really do think that the criticism you see in quite a few reviews of Hadestown that the characters are simple and not very three dimensional kind of misses the forest for the trees. For one thing, I think that you can absolutely tell a good story with simple characters, and I think that Hadestown is definitely a story that it works for. But there’s also the more big picture issue that for a musical to be really successful it kind of inherently has to be flexible. if it's going to run for a really long time then it needs to be flexible and be able to change to stay interesting to people, but once the book's set in stone then basically the only thing that can change and keep things interesting is the cast! if the cast aren't able to bring something unique to a show, then there's not really a point in people going back to see it, and it won't have much longevity
and i think that hadestown's simplicity is a real positive in this regard bc the characters being quite basic means that new actors are a lot more free to make them their own. not only is it more artistically interesting (to me at least), but it’s also just. a smart business decision. it means that the show has the potential to run for a super long time without people getting bored of it. just from personal experience, I know that I’m always interested to listen to versions with different actors I haven’t heard before, no matter how many versions I’ve listened to already! I love getting to see all the different takes different actors have on the characters, like how patrick page as hades leans more into his powerful godlike side while kevyn morrow leans more into his human side. or how eva noblezada's eurydice feels a lot more beaten down and pessimistic than morgan siobhan green's eurydice, who gets more of her desperation across
so tl;dr: while I understand the criticism that the characters in hadestown are pretty simplistic and I totally get that if you’re not In The Life as a theatre kid that’s maybe not going have a lot of appeal for you, but I think that keeping the characters simple is actually a pretty fucking smart move in this case because it means that new cast members are able to bring more of their own Takes to the characters and keep the show feeling different and fresh

Polls and revised dreamcasts
I made a post about how I'm using polls to help me figure what you want to see for upcoming dreamcasts. And I'm going to do the same for the older dreamcasts I'm reviving (in part because I've gotten better since I first created them and changed my format and in part because of the new cast members).
So at the beginning of the month, I will release a week-long poll that lists eight shows that I could create next month and do the top four winners each Wednesday (or Thurday if time is tight). The bottom four will move to next month's poll with four new shows. I
The revised dreamcasts for the rest of the month will be Chicago and Jagged Little Pill, so look forward to those! And make sure you vote so I can bring you the content you want to see!
Please make sure to vote!
