This Week in BL - I'm All Over the Place, and so are the shows

Organized, in each category, by ones I'm enjoying most at the top.

Nov 2023 Wk 5

Ongoing Series - Thai

Last Twilight (Fri YT) ep 4 of 12 - The Jasmine flirting thing was so darn cute, I can’t. I love these two so much.

The Sign (Sat YT) ep 2 of 10 - Oh it’s great. Flirting. Fighting. Fate. Murder. Eventually we’ll add fucking. A trifffecta. I could do with a bit less training but whatever. And we have learned our boys are laboring under a geis. NO SINGING. Otherwise this ep was actually pretty flipping great.

My Dear Gangster Oppa (Thurs iQIYI) ep 6 of 8 - Ooo kidnapping and the sides are suffering betrayal. Also Tew kills again. I like that they don’t shy away from the fact that he’s a killer and Guy was genuinely scared. And then Tew had to break up with Guy to protect him in Noble Sacrifice (tm). How Cdrama of him. Rough ep all round.

For Him (Thurs iQIYI) ep 1 of 10 - It’s not exactly good, but it’s better than I was expecting, and I tend to cut pulps a lot of slack out the gate. The plot is more interesting, Him is a sweetie (I like that in a seme) and our uke has both game and pluck. He’s a femme bitch, I LOVE that in a boy + we never get it femme in the lead. The acting is not great, sound all over the place, but there are no terrible sound effects, the soundtrack is okay, and our high heat came with a side of BJ + condoms, and no one has sung (yet), so I think I like it. It’s giving me Big Dragon vibes.

Linguistic moment:

Him used Him/ter for pronouns & ha. Very flirty. Nail used rao back a little bit of a challenge. (No pom and didn’t use his own name either.) Gauntlet thrown. Our baby ends up with rao/kao but I don’t think that’ll stick. Him is getting Phi out of him if it's the last thing he does.

Bake Me Please (Mon Gaga) ep 2 of 6 - The characters’ shared backstory is no surprise but I do like this show. Those little private smiles as they find family. Those lingering gazes as they find romance. Lovely. Also Shin wants to marry into Peach's family so bad, I’m reminded of Laurie in Little Women. All that said, it’s never the top of my list to watch for some reason.

Cooking Crush (Sun YT) 1 of 12 - How could I have forgotten how stunning Off is? Meanwhile… I love Gun’s character, he's so cute. But this show is a bit too comedic for me. I wish GMMTV were taking this script seriously. Sorry Neo et al I’m not sold on the sides. In general? I don’t love it. I don’t hate it either. In other news, I think I'll go make toast.

Pit Babe (Fri iQIYI) ep 3 of 14 - I love the sides and unholy amount and in general it was fine this week probably because I decided to do a trash watch.

Twins the series (Fri GaGa) ep 5 of 10 - I’m getting fatigued. Also holy random sex Batman. Where did these extra sides come from? I’m confused. Tonal pingpong going on, and not just in the shower.

Middleman’s Love (Fri YT & iQIYI ep 4 of 8 - Finally a direct confession Jade can’t avoid. Will things get a bit more serious?

Absolute Zero (Weds iQIYI) ep 10 of 12 - I don’t know why I watch this show, the acting is great, but it just makes me cry.

Playboyy (Thurs Gaga) 3 of 14 eps - What a bonkers thing this is. Very kinky and also just odd. I do keep thinking about the pinks with it. Similarly, there doesn’t seem much glue holding this thing together, dried cum of course but not glue. And despite what some kinksters say, the one cannot replace the other.

My Universe (Sun iQIYI) Fake Love ep 15 of 24 - This is a weird installment. Too stalker and random blackmail for me. But not as bad as abuse and death, I guess?

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

A Breeze of Love (Korea iQIYI) eps 7-8fin - Not much of a love triangle in the end (you just found out he is actually gay and broken hearted = an opportunity not a tragedy). Meanwhile I like that the high school break up was just mr insomniac's fault. He got jealous and angry and petty. No miscommunication just an asshole kid. I did find this show a little slow, even though it was your standard length KBL. Odd that. They are very cute boyfriends tho.

All in all:

Tsundere insomniac grump reunited with his sunshine jock ex (human sleeping pill) who now hates him. Basketball is also involved. While the simplicity of a reunion plot makes this more cohesive than most KBLs, it is a tad stiff and slow, never managing to lift itself out of "pretty and pretty enjoyable" - I liked it but I don’t think I’m going to remember much about it. 8/10

VIP Only (Taiwan Fri Gaga) ep 3 of 10 - It has the feel of a one act, with such a limited cast and location, which reminds me of KBL. Still watching these two quietly fall in love and process affection through their own art forms is sweet. This is a very soft gentle show.

Sahara-sensei to Toki-kun (Japan Fri Gaga) - Toki, a delinquent but pure-hearted kid falls in love with his handsome phys-ed teacher, Sahara. This is very much my trope but very manga campy, which I don’t love. I’m quite torn. Toki is an idiot but a lovable one. But do I like it?

It's Airing But...

The Whisperer (Sun ????) 10 eps - Thai horror BL that ALSO involves cheating (what joy is mine). He has dimples (My Ride) but I don't think even dimples can motivate me to watch. You can tell me how this goes if you can find it.

SHADOW (Thai Gaga) 14 eps - I'm not wild about Thai horror (or horror at all) even one featuring Singto and Fluke. I'm holding off. If told it's good, I'll binge.

7 Days Before Valentine (Weds WeTV) 10 eps - Giving me Luminous Solution vibes, so I'm waiting to binge if told it's safe.

Beyond The Star (Weds iQIYI) 8 eps - House of Stars meets Boyband. I was NOT impressed with ep 1. Waiting to be told if I should bother.

What Did You Eat Yesterday Season 2 AKA Kinou Nani Tabeta? Season 2 (Japan Gaga) 10 eps - I find this series more fun to binge, so I'm waiting until it completes its run.

In case you missed it

One Room Angel (Japan Gaga) finished. Adaptation of Harada’s manga (which I did not like) about a clerk who (nearly) dies and ends up cohabitating with an angel. I was warned that the ending would not work for me so I decided not to bother.

My Biker BL short movie from Wayu supposedly premiered Nov 27 on their YouTube Channel for Members to watch. I couldn't find anything further. The MDL description makes me think it's not for me so I bother.

Tights and silly decisions

I love how ppl want me to write ler Lyney and I go do the complete opposite LMAO

This is based on a hc I shared with @duckymcdoorknob last night and felt inspired to flesh out into a fic

Usually Lyney was considered the trickster between the two, always finding new ways to keep his partner on his toes. Still, he seems to forget just how good Aether can get him too, as it was the case today...

"AETHER NOHOHO!" the magician squealed like a little girl as he ran away from his partner, or pretend to atleast.

Aether had woken up with a sudden urge to wreck his boyfriend, to put it bluntly. So now there they were, parkouring all over the house. Lyney ended up dashing towards his room, which wasn't his brightest idea, or maybe it was intentional, because now Aether was blocking the door, his only exit out. Unless he tried crawling out the window...

"What's wrong? Did my little magician get caught?" Aether had a playful lilt in his voice as he slowly drew closer to Lyney, making the other back up until he fell flat against his bed. Nervous giggles already rippling out of his throat as he put his hands up defensively.

"Wahahait! Aether, please! Lehet's tahahalk about this!".

The blonde traveller couldn't help let out an amused chuckle as he loomed over him. "Oh please, we both know this is what you wanted~".

Lyney's face turned as bright as his pyro vision, before suddenly lettiong out a surprised squeak as his partner playfully tugged at his legs, pulling him closer.

"Won't be needing these pesky boots now" Aether unbuckled the magician's boots, placing them aside. Only leaving Lyney's stockings as any form of protection, or so he thought. The feeling of the travellers nail teasingly running down the length of his sole was enough to get Lyney to crack.

"HO—!" his body jerked violently, but Aether made sure to keep a firm grip along his ankle.

"Oh? What's this? Do these tights make you more sensitive? You don't usually react this strongly" the traveller had such a shit-eating grin on his face as his short nails oh so gently crawled like tiny spiders over Lyney's socked foot.

"W-wahaHAIT! NOHOHO, AETHER! OH MY GOHOHOD!" Lyney shrieked at the top of his lungs, his body trying so desperately to squirm away. All he managed was to flip himself onto his stomach, which not being able to see where Aether would strike next made it tickle even more!

Taking the opportunity, the traveller sat on his ankles, keeping him stuck in that position for good.

"Haha! Who knew that these tights would make you more ticklish~" Aether cooed as his nails softly yet relentlessly wiggled along the skin right below Lyney's toes. Enjoying as his boyfriend would try to kick his feet and curl his toes, only to not be able to get away.

"AEHEHEHE! IT'S SO BAHAHAD!" Lyney banged his fist against the firm mattres as high-pitched laughter was forced out of his throat.

"Hmm, is it? I wonder... would it tickle more with or without the stockings?".

Even though Lyney couldn't see him, he could already picture the evil twinkle of mischief in Aether's eyes. The question making the usually composed magician gulp in nervousness and giddyness. He felt so flustered that he couldn't think of words to say in the moment, until he felt one of his tights being slowly pulled off.

"H-hold ohohon! There's no neheed for thahahat..!" the magician pleaded through worrysome giggles, trying his best to cover his bare foot with his socked one. Not like it'd do much.

"Oh c'mon, this is for research!" Aether mustered in the most serious voice he could in this silly situation. "Now, which one tickles more. Stockings?" with that, Aether gave quick but gentle scribbles all over Lyney's socked foot.

"pfft! BWAHAHAHAHA! NAHAHAHAO!" the pyro user's body bounced up and down, desperately trying to squirm away, with no success. After a moment, Aether stopped, allowing Lyney to quickly prepare himself for whatever next his partner had planned for him, or atleast try to.

"Or bare skin?~" the traveller firmly grasped the bare foot, curling it slightly to make the wrinkles more noticeable, before digging his nails into it.

"gyAAHHH!!!" Lyney's squeal was so high-pitched and loud, the whole of Fontaine could've heard him. "EEEAHAHAHAHA! HOHOLY SH- AHAHAHAHA! NOHOHOHO! THAHAHAT'S SO- NYAHAHAHAHA!".

Poor Lyney could barely get a full sentence in without instantly jumping back into hysterics.

"Now tell me, which one tickles more?~" as if this could get any crueler, Aether started tickling both feet with vigor. Not enough to hurt, but enough to send any ticklish magician into giddy insanity.

"WAAAAAH! HYAHAHAHAHA! OHOHO MY GWAHAHAHAHA! EHEHEHE BAHARE! BARE IS SO MUCH WOHOHORSE!" with pure willpower did Lyney manage to speak at all at that moment. He could feel his stomach aching, cheeks stretched to a maximum, tears flowing down his cheeks like the Fontaine cascades. Atleast Aether had a spark of mercy left in him and oh so agonizingly slow did he reach a full stop of his tickle attack.

He got off Lyney, flippling the latter over to better observe the flushed mess that was his boyfriend.

"Y'know, we still haven't tested out if these tights make your thighs more sensitive too...~" Aether placed a teasing kiss along Lyney's crown of messy hair, earning an embarrassed whine. Although, Lyney would be damned if he said he hated this.

Ok, that's gonna be long one.

One jet is around $50 million. She has two. And now she had the ig tracking account taken down claiming that's an invasion of privacy. Very interesting considering the account existed for a few years and she didn't have any problems with it and now suddenly she gets called out for abusing the environment it's become invasive. The lady is shady. And the fact that her answer about not going to therapy is 'i feel very sane'. Oof. She's republican raised for sure. Those people think that any mental health issue equals clinical insanity and if you're seeing a therapist there must be something wrong with you.

She's jumping from one relationship to another and doesn't even know who she is. She just molds into whatever her man wants or what looks best for the image. She doesn't know how to exist on her own. For someone who presents herself as a 'girlboss' she sure doesn't have a sense of self-worth and always has to have a man next to her. No matter how bigoted he may be. She's not getting any younger so she's getting desperate and that's probably why she's unleashing on Joe. If she wants a kid, she doesn't have much time left so she latches on to every man throwing themselves at her in hopes of a happily ever after. It doesn't work like that. Fix yourself first then move on to look for someone to build a life and future with. There's no way any sane grown man would want a self-sabotaging, fight-picking, obsessive overgrown teenager with no sense of boundaries to even marry let alone have a child with. She doesn't know where her public life ends and private one begins.

I'm sure Joe saw all of that and dipped. It's not good to bring a child in that environment. And if they'd ever had one, she'd go on with her life and he'd be a house husband. I've never seen TS as maternal, nurturing or even mature enough to have a child because she seems not to have the capacity to take care of herself. In 2016 Joe was the one who took care of her and 'saved her'. It wasn't her own doing. And when he left, she started spiraling again. She portrayed herself as a mature grown woman in her 2020 albums and that turned out to be a farce. She's still that same insecure 16 year-old but richer, more influential and famous. Her recent interviews are a solid proof of that.

Her music is also nothing special. Some generic pop with repetitive and recycled melodies. She's not a vocalist, not a dancer, doesn't have a superb instrument skill, there's barely any emotion in every song she sings. Her lyrical topics are the same and don't hold any though provoking themes. She uses nonsensical metaphors and uncommonly used words to make her lyrics look better and herself seem smarter. It doesn't change the point of the song though. Argumentative antithetical dream girl is just a glamorous way of saying manic. Machiavellian is a way of saying manipulative, being morally indifferent and self-serving, lacking empathy. Sure does sound nice, huh? "I'm only cryptic and Machiavellian (manipulative, selfish, deceptive, cunning. call it whatever you want) 'cause I care". Machiavellianism in psychology is described as one of the traits in the Dark triad model. Right along narcissism and psychopathy. Mastermind is masterminding out in the open and no one bats an eye. The psychologists that named the trait after Niccolo Machiavelli said that one of the core features is lack of concern for conventional morality (they aren't concerned about the morality of lying and cheating). If you're into psychology Richard Christie and Florence L. Geis (the ones that named the trait) have a book "Studies in Machiavellianism" which is a pretty good and insightful read.

(just my assumption) I'm sure Joe dropped that word on her and she was like 'ooh, sounds nice and Machiavelli was like very political, a bit controversial and cool and people refer to him a lot, I'll definitely be using that in a song'. lmao. little did she know. I think she thought he meant it in a political sense and not a psychological one. Which are totally different things. And I'm sure he was like 'lol, she thought'.

There're a ton of celebrities bringing her up on talk-shows as well. At least once a week there's a bit on some show about a certain celeb's interaction with her. As someone who enjoys learning english trough media that's quite disturbing. I see her everywhere, TV shows, news articles, social media outlets. She's becoming inescapable. And that makes me wonder about the proportion of celebrities and journalists who genuinely like her and the ones who bring her up to get more attention. God forbid you say anything negative about her. Her Karen army will immediately send death threats your way, make fun of every aspect of your life or even dox you. And with her silence she's enabling this behaviour because she's a self-proclaimed Machiavellian (whether she chose a psychological meaning for the song or not) and doesn't care what her minions do as long as she doesn't get called out for it.

She only allows non-critical journalists to interview her. I mean, what kind of self-suck is that? An interview should be a form of discussion and not an ass kissing session. Any negative article about her will have your whole outlet blacklisted from interacting with her and her team. She needs to be in full control of the narrative all the damn time because she knows that once she lets go of the rein all of the skeletons in her closet will fall out on their own.

She's digging her own grave and I'm here for it. Last time she could make Kim and Kanye the villains and this time she'll have no one to blame but herself. Her narcissistic flat ass would make Tree the scapegoat if there's no one else she could point her finger to. It's always someone else's fault but hers. A chronic victim of this cruel patriarchal world.

I have studied psychology briefly and have learned about the dark triad and machiavellianism. What's surprising to me is that high mach people can gain advantage in the short run but ultimately lose their power in the long run because people start seeing through their surface level acting, which is what we're seeing through her behaviour right now. She acts to be an activist only when it benefits her. But swifties have so much obsession with her that even if they find it disturbing, they will try to justify it. Also idk how Taylor flexes about her machiavellianism, like to me that's not something to be proud of, the ends do not justify the means when you hurt so many people in the process. The fact that she's accepting she's cunning, manipulative, deceptive and lies to get things according to her own interest tells a lot about who she is as a person! no wonder why Joe didn’t want to marry her. Her machiavellianism trait only benefitted her in the short run

As the seasons were changing from fall to winter your body did not react well. After going to the nurse you were under dorm arrest lucky for you, you have no dorm mate yet so you wouldn't be able to get anyone sick.

Wednesday had notice your absent fron school but when she would ask about you no one knew what had happen to you. After school she went to your dorm to see you wrapped in your blankets with your messy hair sticking out. "You idiot why weren't you at school today" "Well hello love", you said your voice a bit raspy as your throat hurt cause of you speaking. "What wrong with you" "I'm sick, that is why im not in school" "Why didn't you tell anyone" "Sorry I have been sleeping and I guess it just slipped my mind, Sorry".

Wednesday only to walk up to you as she took in more of your features. To many being sick was gross but to her seeing you like this was adorable, seeing your messy hair every where, some of your hair sticking to your forehead, eyes a bit red from the tears as your eyes were burning, along with them being droopy. She smiled as she petted your hair. She loved the way you looked and but also you were hurting so she wanted to be by your side. "Love I don't want you to gey sick to you" Mi amour I can't get sick so I am going to make sure you get better" "Thank you love, Im just gonna close my eyes for a bit". You said as you drift off to sleep and with that Wednesday went back to her dorm as she told Enid about your condition so she asked Wednesday to give you one of her plushy to hold.

You woke up to your girlfriend putting a couple of blankets down. As you looked around a bit you saw a colorful plushy which made you think about Enid and on your table you saw your favorite snacks amd drinks along with stuff to help you feel better. "L-love" "Sh Mi amour just relax im here I brought some stuff if thay will be alright" "B-but you get sick too" "I told you already I will be fine just lay back and let me take of you".

Wednesday put a cold rag on your forehead as she poured you a drink of water to take some pain killers. You thanked her as you took your pills. After you took your pills she made you eat something small.

For the whole week Wednesday stood by your side as a few of friends did stop by but Wednesday was there with you only leaving for classes and your medicines.

The weekend hit again as you jumped out pf bed feeling like a whole new you. When Wednesday woke up you gave her a big kiss on her lips as you thanked her over and over again.

Wednesday took your thank you's but she reply with say 'That is what a good girlfriend does'.

Wednesday will always be your personal nurse.

2023 BL/GL/QL Round-Up Post

I thought for posterity I'd post a reflection on everything I watched that completed in 2023. For me, that means anything that started in 2022 but the last episode was in 2023 is on this list, but anything that will still be airing after 31 December 2023 11:59 my time (EST) is not on this list, even if the bulk of the show did air in 2023.

A few stats:

110 discrete pieces of content (series/films)

clocking in at est. 600 hours of NEW BL/GL content only

from 9 different countries (Cambodia [1], Philippines [3], Hong Kong [1], Japan [18], Korea [19], Myanmar [1], Taiwan [6], Thailand [56], Vietnam [7])

~50% of the content I watched on this list is from Thailand

~85% of my content was on YouTube [40%], GaGaOoLaLa [23%] and iQIYI [21%].

[Note that this year a lot of older GMMTV shows moved off of YouTube and onto Viki so if you're looking at these stats to decide what to pay for, this won't account for that.]

This doesn't include re-watches or catching up on old shows [e.g. I re-watched Love Sick, My Ride the Series, Semantic Error, ITSAY/IPYTM, Our Dating Sim at least 3 times lol, and anything with a s2 I re-watched s1 to prep, among others, watched Fujoshi Ukkari Gei no Kokuru (2019) for the first time] or non-QL [e.g. Heartstopper s2, Our Flag Means Death s2, Taskmaster s. 15 & 16, Uncanny Counter s2, One Piece s1, etc.] but does include films as well as shows, though I don't count special episodes separately (so Wedding Plan counts once, though I watched both the show and the special).

I hope you all appreciate that with this much content, and with my general brand of being unable to make decisions, I really struggled to narrow down a top 10 list. What follows is the best I could do lol

Sadly, of the GLs that aired this year, I wouldn't recommend any of them. The best one was Show Me Love, which was not actually good but had very gorgeous women and a LOT of flirting.

The other huge thing that happened this year was that I stopped lurking! Thanks specifically to @lurkingshan and @bengiyo demanding everyone start talking about La Pluie, because they got me to post my first meta post. And because I started actually talking to people, I started making actual friends, and participated in organizing things like the Be My Favorite clown checkpoint for ep 11. I also disappeared a month because of life, and am still catching up on everything I intended to write this year. But it's been really rewarding finding this corner of tumblr with likeminded people who like good shows, like to think about these shows, and who are interested in talking about them in a way that's insightful and respectful.

It's been a long time since I felt comfortable enough participating actively in a fandom, and I just want to say to everyone I've interacted with this year: Thank you!

Nightmare comfort head cannons

Jake x reader x neytiri

Summary: after waking up from a nightmare you are comforted by your mates .

Eyes snapping open you could feel the film of a cold sweat coat your skin. You lied there silently catching your breath as you begin to recall the dream nightmare you had moments before.You slowly left yourself from your husbands chest carefully not to wake him or your wife nor children as you leave the hammock searching for space to breath ,the sleep pile making you feel as though you were suffocating.

Jake would be the first person to realize your absence being a light sleeper after his time In the Marines.

Shifting his eyes to your spot when he didn't feel the pressure of your body on his chest and seeing you gon shot a wave of panic through his body fully waking him up.

He would quietly and carefully wake up Neytiri informing her of your absence before the two of them slowly and carefully, as not to wake the kids, left your family's hammock in search for their mate.

You had not gone far deciding to rest only a little way into the forest , back resting agent the harsh yet grounding bark. You sat silently regaining your composure and calming your mind when you could hear the sounds of foot steps approaching your direction, ears twitching in recognition.

When Jake and Neytiri reach you they sit either side of you Jake pulling you up agenset his chest while Neytiri cuddled into you're side taking you're hand in hers and began gently rubbing you're hand.

"what is it ma fra'u? Why are you not asleep?" Neytiri spoke breaking the silence.

"bad dream." You mumble voice being blocked by Jake's side. " I needed some time alone."

"do you want to talk about it?" This time it was Jake talking.

You shake your head sitting up." No that's okay. I'm over it now really." You said before standing up .

"let's go back before the kids realize we're gone. The last thing we need is for them to wake up and not be able to get them to lay back down." You said stretching your arms above your head , your tail and ears twitching.

"If that's what you wish sweetheart " Jake said getting up then helping Neytiri up as well. " Besides,you're right. It's gonna be hell trying to get them back asleep. Well that and I want cuddles " he finished with a smile making you and Neytiri chuckle before the three of you set off back to your thankfully still sleeping children.

The three of you layed cuddled .Jake under his wives caging the two of you to his sides with his arms. When sleep reclaimed you mind the fear of another nightmare had vanished only love and comfort finding its way instead .

Animation Night 164: Yaoi, Yuri

The fashion on Tumblr lately has been to divide everything in the world into yaoi and yuri, hasn't it? Well, tonight we don't need to make any abstract stretches of the imagination: it's time for anime where boys kiss boys and girls kiss girls.

So. Five minutes ago, before Tumblr deleted it, this post was off to a pretty good start! I was happily explaining about the differences of nuance between 少年愛 shōnen-ai, 耽美 tanbi, ジュネ june, やおい yaoi and ボーイズラブ bōizu rabu on the one hand, and on the other, why 薔薇 bara (rose) isn't a genre title but nevertheless the editor of 薔薇族 Barazoku ('rose tribe') magazine coined 百合 yuri as a distaff counterpart, the 'lily tribe', and that really caught on.

I was starting in on a brief sketch of some history, how Tokugawa Japan was super gay and had a defined set of social rules for gay relationships in the form of 男色 nanshoku, but this was squashed by the Meiji restoration, and thus gay manga became a subgenre cultivating its own specific otaku audience.

So then I was gonna tell you about how the early shōjo manga focusing on gay relationships, taking the old term shōnen-ai [which originally referred to pederasty], were quite nerdy and literary, but the subgenre rapidly grew in the 70s and 80s, cultivating an otaku audience of its own - primarily women termed, somewhat disparagingly, 婦女子 fujoshi but this demographic breakdown is certainly not absolute and there is a term for male fans, which is 普段し fudanshi. We coulda gone into the whole world of doujinshi, of the massive convention comiket; I coulda cracked open Kimi Rito's History of Hentai Manga for some interesting tidbits about how certain images become encoded as symbols and then reused routinely in manga.

And you know, I might have talked about how this is distinct from manga aimed at gay readers in gay magazines (like the above mentioned 薔薇族 Barazoku) which might be termed ゲイ漫画 gei manga. Perhaps we might mention here the upcoming adaptation of gay manga meme sensation kuso miso technique:

I was maybe gonna talk a little about some of the older genre conventions of BL; the masc top or 攻め seme and the effeminate bottom or 浮け uke; maybe a little about how yaoi fandom got exported into anime fan culture in the West and the strange phenomenon of the 'yaoi paddle'.

...well, it looks like I managed to skim over all that anyway. Spite works wonders for typing speed, it turns out. But believe me, that's really just surface level stuff. We're working on a followup to the legend of Animation Night 69, so we'll be able to get in a lot deeper in a few weeks~

Anyway, even today, BL and yuri works rarely get adapted into anime in a particularly high profile way. But 'rarely' is not never! In Animation Nights past, well: on Animation Night 69 we watched the delightful 風と木の詩 Kaze to Ki no Uta (The Song of Wind and Trees), an OVA adapting the seminal (ha ha) shōjo manga about a French twink at boarding school. That was the direction of Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, known also for Venus Wars and definitely the subject of a future Animation Night, it was as moving and melodramatic as you could hope from 70s shōjo. Sayo Yamamoto (AN36) brought us the incredibly charming figure gay skating series Yuri on Ice; and then of course Kunihiko Ikuhara (AN155), bless his heart, made his always bold statements on yuri with Yurikuma Arashi ('Lesbian Bear Storm') and BL with Sarazanmai, which I will surely cover if we ever reach the point where we're like 'let's marathon a TV anime' again ;p

Tonight though? We'll be looking at a couple of relatively recent films on both sides of the fence.

For the BL wing, we have the film 海辺のエトランゼ Umibe no Étranger, aka L'étranger de la Plage or Stranger by the Shore. Kanna Kii, the mangaka, had previously worked as an animator at Studio Hibari, a small anime studio that dates back to the late 70s and broadly seems to specialise in shōjo. Kii returned there to design characters and supervise the film, and evidently Hibari were very excited to adapt the work of their alumnus, because they absolutely spared no effort.

The story centres on orphaned highschooler Mio and his neighbour Shun, an aspiring gay novelist on a remote island in Okinawa. The pair grew close three years before the start of the story, but Mio had to leave Okinawa; we join him now as he returns to that same shore, still holding feelings for Shun.

I'll admit, I don't know a ton about this movie - but it comes highly recommended by kvin who described it as one of an 'oasis' of strong BL works released around 2020. And the clips I've seen - well, they're the gifs used in this post, really nicely drawn scenes of affection. So I'm pretty excited!

Our yuri wing... well, there's a few good choices for yuri TV shows I could show you, but tonight it's late and we need something short and sweet, and that really narrows the field! What I have is あさがおと加瀬さん。Asagao to Kase-san [Kase-san and the Morning Glories], a one hour OVA adapting the manga 加瀬さん Kase-san by Hiromi Takashima. The OVA starts partway into the manga, when plant nerd Yui Yamada has already started dating her crush, the athletic Tomoka Kase. It follows the trials of the girls' relationship as they are coming towards the end of their time at school - relatively low-key, slice of life first relationship typea thing.

The animae was adapted by studio Zexcs under the direction of Takuya Satō, who you might remember as director of the first part of Armitage III [AN153]. Zexcs spun out of JC Staff at the end of the 90s, and they've been pretty busy since then - for me their most notable creation is Aku no Hana (The Flowers of Evil), a truly unique rotoscope anime with an incredibly engaging, tense story about teenagers and the imp of the perverse... which sadly never got the love it deserved! yes I'm still beating this drum!

Anyway, while I have not been able to find a ton of production information, I am told at least that Kase-san was a passion project for Satō - evidently a yuri fan given he also took on the adaptation of Otherside Picnic. It began first with five-minute web adaptation Kase-san and the Morning Glories in 2018 that's more of a musical montage of moments from the series, which was then able to be expanded the next year into an hour-long OVA...

A lot of romance stories focus on the characters getting together, so it's interesting that this one skips right over those chapters of the manga and gets going once the characters are already together, focusing more on the trials of an ongoing relationship between two goofy hormonal kids trying to figure out if this is just a class S thing or something that they want to last. A great deal of effort is put towards character animation, intimacy, the little flinches and reactions. You can read a little discussion about it here on ANN.

Chapter Four: Written in My Stars

Summary: Daryl and Merle enter the camp for the first time, their fate in the hands of you and the people who vouch for them to stay.

Leaves crunched under the boots Daryl wore, following hastily in order to not spend another minute in the harsh outer world. The Dixon brothers walked behind you and Glenn as their short journey pushed through a foraging area in the forest, leading to a large clearing, bombarded with many tents and parked vehicles.

Daryl couldn't help but marvel at the amount of people all crowded together in made up camps that took up one area or another. Some tents were made out of random supplies the group had on hand.

The only thing daryl pondered in the moment as he took in the surrounding camp was: How could people band together in such an effortless way, like you all did? Not only that, but amongst the wreckage and chaos, they take care of each other. They tend to each other.

Daryl continued to follow you as you entered the camp grounds, a somewhat odd feeling washing over him, like he was trespassing on someone else's land that he wasn't welcome on. Though, he still trailed in the wake of your leadership.

The two men followed you to the smaller group of people sat around a campfire, all involved in their individual activities. Daryl took a step back awkwardly, realizing he'd trailed too close to your back. Glenn stood at your side, still nervously looking at him and merle.

Chatter among the group echoed and was the only thing Daryl could hear, until you spoke again.

"Gey guys," You uttered, first grabbing the attention of two blonde women sitting nearest to you, before waiting patiently for the others to turn their attention to you.

Realizing the group hadn't heard you, or did and decided to ignore, Daryl only felt heat rise up his neck before he caught the attention of the group before him.

"Hey, listen up!" Before he realized he was the one speaking, everyone around the campfire was turning their heads to look at him. Granted, he'd never met any of these people before, so it was a bit of a rough come-on, especially since he was to be a member of the camp. Daryl could practically sense beads of sweat forming on the palms of his hands as his eyes darted around.

"And who are you?" The older blonde women spoke up objectively, her arm around the younger blonde's shoulder.

Clearing your throat, everyone's eyes shifted towards you with full attention.

"Guys, this is Daryl and Merle Dixon," You gestured to him and his brother, "They're hunters.. Glenn and I found them in the woods while we were foraging. Now listen, I wouldn't bring more people into our camp if I thought they would be a threat to us. In fact, they've agreed to provide food for our group. They can hunt and track and teach us a lot of useful survival stuff."

Everyone looked at you with a suspicious glare, their trust levels at an all time low due to the fact that these people were still like strangers to one another.

Glenn spoke up, keeping his promise to you earlier.

"We obviously talked it over before even telling these guys we had a camp. I trust her, and she trusts them. so whatever Shane says, I'll vouch for them no matter what. We need more food for our group, more meat for our meals, since who knows how long Dale's provisions are gonna last us. At this rate, I say we did the group a favor by bringing them back with us."

It caught Daryl off guard to see Glenn backing you up after what he said in the forest suggest he did anything but that. He glanced at daryl and his brother once again, eyes softer than before, adjusting his baseball cap before giving Daryl a small nod in reassurance.

It was then the crunching of leaves was heard, as Daryl turned his head to see a grey-haired woman approaching him.

"Well, welcome to our group, it's nice to meet you," she spoke, holding out her hand, "I'm Carol, and over there is my daughter, Sophia. Glad to have more people in this camp now that can provide for us."

Daryl's lips straightened into a line as he shook the woman's hand, and held out his hand in a small wave to the young girl.

"Oh yeah? And what does Shane think about this?" another voice called out behind Carol, trying to see who it was as he stood. As she retreated back to her spot next to Sophia, a man with a large build walked over. Daryl watched as he made his way to the four of you, almost threateningly.

"I... haven't talked to him yet. you know where he is, T-dog?" Daryl happen to pick up the aspect about you that wasn't accepting no as an answer. You were stubborn, just like him.

"Down by the water. Go on, before he sees these two and starts yelling with no explanation.. Go!" The man pointed off in the direction he'd said Shane was in.

Just like that, you walked away with a huff in the direction of T-dog's pointed hand. Daryl hadn't realized he was still watching you walk away with every step you took, before Glenn turned back, speaking to Daryl and his brother.

"Until you guys hear back from Y/n, you can sit anywhere you'd like and make yourselves at home. I know it might be awkward now, but once you talk to people, it'll get easier. If we hear back from her that you guys can stay, I'll show you where there's room for you guys to pitch your tents. For now, we wait."

Daryl watched as Glenn took a seat next to an older man who wore a bucket hat. With a nod, Daryl crossed his legs and sat on the ground near the fire.

"I'll get out on a hunt t'morrow, if I get the chance, that is." Daryl added, nodding to Glenn.

"Well, I'm Andrea, and this is my sister Amy." The older blonde woman stood from her seat, holding a welcoming hand out to Daryl, now warm to him after being told who they were. She introduced herself and the younger blonde that sat next to her, who was timidly fiddling with some sticks for the campfire.

"Daryl. An' Merle." Daryl said, tilting his head in the direction of the older Dixon.

"So, you're originally from georgia? I, uh, noticed your accent and was curious." Andrea questioned, trying her luck with a pickup line.

"Yep, born and raised. I'm the older brother, the better one." Merle's voice was heard for the first time since being introduced to the group. Daryl rolled his eyes irritatingly, detesting the way his brother just couldn't help himself from making everything about himself.

"Whatever, dude." Daryl began to collect some scattered branches and threw them into the fire.

"Well, I taught you all ya know, didn't I, brother? Helped you make it this far. Can't deny that." It was then Daryl shot his brother a pointed look.

To shift the conversation from leading somewhere hostile, glenn spoke up.

"Guys, this is the rest of our group," Glenn gestured to the multiple people around him including the older man sat beside him, "This is Aale, that's Jacqui and T-dog, Jim and.. Well i guess you've already been introduced to the others. Except for Shane, Lori.. and Carl."

Daryl looked to everyone as they waved, his brain on the other hand, wracked with all the names he'd have to learn if he got to stay in this camp.

"That's a lotta names.. I'll figure 'em all out if we end up stayin' or not." Daryl's gruff voice explained, as he stood up from the ground, brushing the dirt and wood chips off of his pants. Readjusting the straps of his pack and bow, he heard an unknown man's voice yelling in the distance.

"Here we go.." T-dog mumbled as him and Jacqui broke away from the approaching voice, walking to a different part of the camp. carol and Sophia left the campfire as well, returning back to where Carol's husband was. Daryl saw another figure in the tent they entered, one he assumed was Carol's husband.

"You don't wanna meet that guy, he's an asshole." Andrea spoke lowly, catching Daryl's attention. He only grunted in response, as his ears caught your voice echoing against the other male voice he'd picked up before. Daryl's attention was focused on the overlapping footsteps of the two of you, until he saw your figure walking behind Shane's as he approached the fire pit.

Before Daryl could even introduce himself to the guy, who he'd presumed was Shane walking toward him, Merle stepped in front of his way. You however, stepped out of Merle's way, to stand next to Daryl.

He heard his brother's voice begin to speak, but was thrown off at you choosing to stand next to him, out of all places.

"Hey man, you Shane? Heard a lot about ya through your pals over here. They say you're the man in charge? That true?" Merle's voice spoke in a snide tone, attempting to read the guy in order to get the green flag from Shane that they could stay in the camp.

Daryl had only noticed himself staring at you without noticing when you happen to turn and look at him, the immediate eye contact shaking himself out of his gaze, innocently turning back to the men conversing in front of him like nothing had occurred.

"Yeah, yeah, that's me. Now you wanna tell me what the hell you're doing in my camp?" The man walked towards Daryl and his brother, yelling with his arm raised and hand pointed at them.

"Shane! I just told you about these guys! They'll be good for the group." Your voice sounded in Daryl's ears again, deciding right then and there that he enjoyed hearing the sound of your voice.

She's vouchin' for us, again...

"Yeah, your pretty little friend, Bambi, found us. Thought we could help out the group, and in return.. we'd get a place to lay our heads for a while. That sound fair enough to you?" Daryl wasn't surprised with how Merle trying to assert himself in this situation, he'd always known his brother to never stop his nagging until he gets what he wants.

"Look, we ain't takin' another night on the road..." Daryl pleaded, noticing you turning to listen to what he had to say from out of the corner of his eye. You were doing so when he'd spoken up for the sake of him and his brother.

At that point, Glenn stood, honoring his promise to the brothers and you right then and there, as he vouched for their stay in the camp.

"Shane, i vouch for these guys. Both of them. They can stay as long as they can provide food for the group. They're good hunters, so I don't think we'll be disappointed."

"You know what, I vouch for them too." Dale chimed in, "We need more food, Shane. These guys will bring in a good enough amount to surpass us for now. Come on, son."

Shane had gone silent, considering the pros and cons of having the brothers join the camp, before looking back at the two and nodding.

"Yeah, alright. fine," Shane said, scratching the back of his head, "Y'all gonna show them where they can pitch their tents, and then we'll uh, we'll eat. Dale's got the rest of the non-perishables in his RV, so I'll let him take charge of that, and leave y'all be."

As Shane walked away, Daryl turned to you, eyes meeting the bright smile on your face.

"Well, welcome to the camp, Daryl," your hand was held out for Daryl to shake, which he accepted, "We're glad to have you. I think you'll be a great member and fit in nicely."

Daryl's chest tightened, taking in the smile plastered on your face, which almost made him lighter in mood himself, just by looking at you. Your hand dropped from his, pulling him out of the daydream once again.

"Thanks, I'm glad to be here." Daryl's next course of action was to pitch his tent and get some rest for a while, which you happily agreed to show him and his brother to. You'd led him to an open area behind some other tents that were nearby.

"Here's where you guys can pitch your tents, I'm sure there's enough room for both of them."

"Hey Bambi, you ever catch any tail around here?"

"Do I.. what?"

"You heard me, Bambi. You ever get any?" Merle seethed as his words came out, the perverted joke he was trying to make leaving a nasty taste in the back of your throat.

"Oh, you would like to know, buddy. Even if I did, it wouldn't be with a bigoted asshole like you. Just appreciate the fact that you both are here in our camp. I didn't ask Glenn to vouch for you, but he did, cause he trusts me. Don't make me regret it. Now, I suggest sitting on the other side of the campsite while we eat. And as for you..."

You turned to Daryl, pausing for a moment, as he felt your eyes on him, trailing up and down his body.

"You're not half bad. Just don't let this one get in your way, and you'll be alright. Think dinner will be ready soon, and if you guys need anything else, I'll be at the campfire with the others."

"Gey, girl. Ge's my brother at the end of the day, and I'm gon' stick by him. Only thing I can do is try to keep him from doin' anything crazy. That good with you?"

"If you promise to keep his behavior in check, then yeah, it's cool with me. Now, hurry up. The food's best when it's hot." You began walking back to the main part of camp while the brothers did up their tents.

Your words reverberated in Daryl's head as you got further from him, a reminder of what was waiting for him once he was done.

Food. A full stomach. The absence of grumbling and pains from hunger.

You'd walked back to the main part of camp, but just out of sight, Daryl watching the way your hips swayed in your jeans.

"She can sure pitch my tent.. heheh..." Merle grumbled, loud enough for Daryl to hear, taunting him as his brother realized he was watching you.

"Just shut up and get your shit done." Daryl worked diligently to get his tent built, and soon enough, it stood tall against the trees. Content with his work, Daryl went on to set up the interior of his tent, removing his clothes from his pack, messily throwing them in one big, unorganized pile. He continued with his cot, setting it upright and then draping its surface with a blanket or two, and his pillow.

As he finished setting his bow down, the smell of cooked food wafted from the campfire.

"Alright, brother. I'm gonna get some of that food, so you'd best hurry if you wanna get some too." Merle called out, the hunger calling him over to where the smell of beans and other soups were being heated for their meal.

"Yeah, don't wait up for me." Daryl hollered back, grabbing for the leather at the very bottom of his pack. He was going to do the thing he's done since childhood, something he always remembered to do amongst the chaos in his life.

Sure enough, Daryl took the leather bound journal from his pack, along with his trusty pen. Deciding to savor the moment without his brother, the itch to write came spontaneously.

The leather journal fell open, pages being turned as Daryl's pen hit the paper the minute he saw another clear page.

Day four

Finally found some people. Livin' ones. Up by the quarry. Whole group. Convinced Merle to hold off on his plan since its been a while since we’ve eaten. Might stay for a few days then take what we need n leave. Been anxious most times, don't wanna get my hopes up for shit that ain't gonna last. But I just wanna eat n get goin'.
