Things to avoid during pregnancy: teratogens
Tumblr media
Teratogens are substances or other factors that can cause birth defects, also known as birth deficiencies. These defects usually appear between the third and eighth week of pregnancy, just as the baby's major organ systems are forming. Teratogens include certain chemicals, drugs, and infections or other diseases that the mother may have.

Teratogens include certain chemicals, medications, and infections or other diseases that the mother may have.

Chemicals and drugs
It is difficult to know whether a particular chemical or drug causes birth defects. Many women take medications during pregnancy, and researchers often base their studies on what the mother remembers taking while she was pregnant. An exception is thalidomide, which was used in the 1960s to treat nausea and has been found to cause babies to have missing arms and legs, either completely or partially.
Other drugs that have been linked to birth defects include
Aminopterin is a drug used to treat cancerous tumors. Aminopterin blocks the action of folic acid, and folic acid is known to be important for DNA production and cell growth. Folic acid can effectively prevent many birth defects, including neural tube defects. Neural tube defects are problems associated with the development of the brain or spinal cord. Taking aminopterin during pregnancy can cause brain abnormalities such as anencephaly (when the brain is totally or partially absent) or hydrocephalus (which is a build-up of fluid in the brain). It can also cause facial abnormalities such as cleft lip and palate.
Some anti-epileptic drugs are associated with a wide range of birth defects such as cardiovascular abnormalities, cleft lip and palate, and microcephaly, a disorder characterized by an undersized brain. These drugs include phenytoin, valproic acid and trimethadione. Women with epilepsy who become pregnant require special care and monitoring, and may need to have their medication changed if necessary.
The blood-thinning drug warfarin is a teratogen. Warfarin can cause central nervous system abnormalities such as mental retardation, as well as problems with the optic nerves.
Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors used to treat high blood pressure can cause many problems during pregnancy. These drugs can cause fetal growth restriction, affect the baby's kidneys and cause the baby to die before birth.
Isotretinoin prescribed to treat severe acne is also associated with multiple birth defects, including cleft palate, heart defects, outer ear defects and underdevelopment of the lower jaw. Isotretinoin is also associated with neural tube defects.
Some types of tranquilizers such as phenothiazine and lithium are thought to be teratogens. Similarly, anti-anxiety drugs such as diazepam are associated with birth defects such as cleft lip and palate.
Specific serotonin reuptake inhibitors used to treat depression can cross the placenta and harm the baby. Their effects on the baby are mostly imperceptible and include irritability, restlessness, tremors, increased breathing rate, nasal congestion or diarrhea. However, it is believed that the paroxetine in the inhibitors can cause birth defects early in pregnancy. It is important to note that depression itself can be more dangerous than the medications taken to treat it. In the case of depression, the benefits of SSRIs must be weighed against the risks to the gestating baby.
Alcohol, tobacco and other drugs
Alcohol consumption during pregnancy causes birth defects; this is well known. Even when consumed in moderate amounts, alcohol can affect the development of the unborn child. Alcohol-induced birth defects include facial, arm and leg deformities, heart problems, mental retardation and fetal growth restriction. However, these disorders are uncommon. Most often, children born to mothers who drank excessively during pregnancy have problems with thinking, memory and behavior. Abnormalities and other problems caused by alcohol use during pregnancy are grouped together as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.
Smoking is associated with fetal growth restriction and premature delivery. Smoking can also affect the development of the brain, cardiovascular system and respiratory system, whether the mother is a smoker or is exposed to other people's smoke. In addition, pregnant babies exposed to tobacco smoke may show startle reactions, tremors and other disorders. The effects of tobacco on the pregnant baby increase with the amount of cigarettes the mother has smoked and the number of years she has been a smoker.
Marijuana use during pregnancy may cause the baby to have low birth weight, intracranial bleeding, restlessness, low blood sugar, low blood calcium levels or a blood infection called sepsis. After birth, the baby may have poor feeding, irritability and rapid breathing.
Amphetamines (or "speed") stimulate the central nervous system. When used during pregnancy, these drugs can cause premature delivery, low birth weight or intracranial bleeding.
Opioids such as heroin or methadone, when used during pregnancy, can cause fetal growth restriction, premature delivery or low birth weight.
Cocaine use during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage or fetal growth restriction and can affect the development of the baby's urinary system or reproductive tract. Children born to cocaine-using mothers may be born with small brains (microcephaly) and have more neurobehavioural problems than others. It has also been determined that cocaine use during pregnancy increases the risk of a serious placental problem called abruptio placentae. In addition, it is possible that the newborn of a cocaine-addicted mother will have startle reactions, be agitated and suck excessively.
The use of these drugs during pregnancy can also lead to a condition called neonatal withdrawal syndrome, when the baby goes through withdrawal. In effect, the baby of a pregnant drug user may become one. After birth, the baby remains addicted to the drug, but since it is no longer receiving the drug, it goes through withdrawal.
Other Chemicals
Some chemicals in the environment are known to cause birth defects. Mercury, found in certain types of fish, is associated with neurological problems such as cerebral palsy and mental retardation. Lead is associated with fetal growth restriction and neurological disorders. Polychlorinated biphenyls (also called polychlorinated biphenyls) cause fetal growth restriction and skin discoloration.
X-rays can affect fetal development and cause abnormalities such as spina bifida, cleft palate, blindness, arm and leg abnormalities or microcephaly (small brain). The type of abnormality that develops depends on the radiation dose received by the pregnant woman and the stage of her pregnancy. There is no safe dose for x-rays. However, dental x-rays (and dental cleanings) are considered safe during pregnancy. If you are or think you may be pregnant and need an x-ray, talk to your health care provider.
Radiation and chemotherapy used to treat cancer are also associated with birth defects. If possible, their use should be delayed until after the baby is born. This is not always possible, so the risks associated with these treatments must be weighed against the benefits to the mother.
Maternal Conditions
Many chronic maternal conditions increase the risk of birth defects such as fetal growth restriction or diseases affecting the unborn baby. In some cases, it is the medications used to treat the condition that harm the baby, not the condition itself. It is important to get these conditions under control before you get pregnant. Sometimes the treatment will need to be changed before the pregnancy begins.

[ @conquerallies ] after being stuck with sachar, charmed by the new god, lincoln felt like there was more he could do outside than within the camp grounds. he befriended darius, the man and him in some beautiful mix of brotherhood and romance that one could only feel while protecting the other was his entire life and being.
when the call came out to return, he decided to see how camp was doing but first decided to stop by his old friend to see how the man was doing.
" knock, knock. " lincoln peeked his head looking for jeronimo with hands extended, wanting to give the other a large and firm embrace.
