In-between commissions, I am exploring other mediums this year, & it has been so much fun (there is artwork *everywhere* in the house right now!) I am very much obsessed with how beautiful pastels are to work with. I have a very small selection right now, hence why all the greens in this piece are the same shades.... I found this guy on the side of the house and thought he'd have a better chance in the greenhouse (for several reasons one being the cats) but when I picked him up he didn't want me to put him down. He then proceeded to climb up my arm to my back where I lost track of him. So he's either in the greenhouse or just outside of it. Hopefully staying away from the cats. Final for my little Green Anole illustration. Dactyloidae is the family group more commonly known as Anoles, a group of lizards that range across much of south and central America, the Caribbean, and the southeastern United States. 

Anoles make up one of the most diverse groups of vertebrates with nearly 400 species known to science. While possess a wide range of color variations and adaptive traits that set each species apart from the others, most (not all) possess a rather noticeable feature known as a dewlap, a bit of erectile cartilage that is covered in skin, often flush with bright colorations and used to do everything from signal potential mates, threaten territorial rivals, and deter predators. 

Anoles mostly feed on small invertebrates, while others might feed on small mice or birds when the opportunity arises.

Fossil evidence of Anoles is rare, though several well preserved specimens have been found in Amber deposits dating back 15-20 million years, early phylogenetic and immunological studies have indicated that their origins could date back to between 44 and 66 million years ago.

This particular piece was inspired by a small Green Anole that my sister found sitting on the inside of her window after she and her family moved to Georgia.

Adding in some fine details with colour pencil - I know that purists may frown upon this approach.... but this is such a small test piece that the pastel marks were almost as big as his eye! Next time, I will go bigger. I have a tiny leaf to finish and then a final tidy pass over the whole piece and it will be done - was a really useful piece of art for future medium considerations.... Florida Native Green Anole by Gary Helm A competition for shelter and food is raging across Florida, and two related lizard species have been adapting to the presence of each other for decades. Florida's native green anoles (pronounced "uh-noles"), Anolis carolinensis, found themselves in competition with the Cuban brown anoles (Anolis sagrei) over a century ago. Native to Cuba, the Bahamas, and the Cayman Islands, Cuban brown anoles are now the most common lizard in many urbanized parts of Florida. The decline in green anoles may not be wholly caused by competition, but it is due in large part to the presence of the introduced Cuban brown anoles. However the green anoles have been able to adapt—at least for the time being. When brown anoles are present, native green anoles move vertically up in the habitat. This allows the lizards to partition the area and decrease competition. However, if there is nowhere in the habitat for the green anoles to move, they ultimately disappear from the area. And while brown anoles are known to prey on young green anoles, their more rapid reproduction may be giving the Cuban cousins another competitive advantage.
