Shigaraki: I mean this in an entirely platonic, slightly power-hungry way, but I love when people call me the friendly "boss." Like "you got is boss" or "whatever ya say, boss." It's so fun. Like we're in the worlds shittiest cartoon mafia.

I was gonna write something WAY too long for the ask box. Then I realized that was dumb and remembered something that's actually in the scope of this "ask-an-OC" thing. To keep this short: Failed Worm Quest on SV, let's not mention it was Taylor, this mysterious character occasionally gets other versions of herself stuck in her head during and can use their powers, one or two at a time. Sort of like a mix of Butcher or Eidolon with a different take on the multiverse than Worm actually uses.
Okay I don't know what Worm Quest or SV are but your idea made me think of Legion from X-Men tbhm
Here's an idea.... Let's absolutely mention that it's Taylor.
This is a Taylor from an Earth where the divergence point was roughly around the point of her Trigger and she can, as you said borrow different powers from different versions of herself at the cost of having those Taylor's in her head.
When Taylor gets stuffed in the locker and gets powers there's a few way her trigger could go, she could get bug powers, she could also get rat powers cos there's definitely rats and mice in that school, the could have gotten a version of her Khepri power set early on, something that would have made her bullies open the locker. She could also have gotten a brute or blaster power that let's her rip the locker apart....She could also have gotten a mover power that let her escape, something that inadvertently have made her the perfect nemesis for Shadow Stalker.
This Taylor has them all.
Her suit is a lot nicer, but heavier and isn't made from spider-silk and it doesn't have the bug theme. This Taylor is an absolute control freak, basically at war with herself and is perpetually so stressed she's on the verge of a second trigger.
She was also never an Undersider, her timelines Coil took one look at her and thought Abso-fucking-lutely not so Lisa was never told about her.
She considers herself "Taylor Prime" or "The most Taylor" and it reflects in her name, she goes by "Alpha".....Which is also a great way to lead into her having a blood feud with Rachel

I need to write at least a few more chapters of my Chainsaw Man fanfic and firmly establish the unstated assumptions in its premise before the manga completely invalidates all those assumptions. But I also don't want to completely abandon that fun new crossover after one chapter. But I also need to finish that other fic I started a couple years ago and hit writer's block on. But I also have a bunch of Worm fanfic ideas that I want to write, and a couple original stories, and—oh yeah, I have things I want to do other than write, and things I need to do unrelated to either of those things.

Worm and Ward and Familiarity
I saw a really great analysis of Worm working with tropes while Ward works against them by @greatwyrmgold, and it reminded me of a more general contrast that I noted:
Worm is coming from a very familiar place and being pulled out of that. The Undersiders have fairly relatable experiences (on average). Poverty, bullying, neglect and abuse by guardians. I'd argue that, as extreme as Alec's experience is, it would resonate with many who have dealt with indoctrination in their youth (like me). Brockton Bay is a city on economic decline, struggling to stay afloat, and afflicted with violent crime. There's superpowers thrown in, sure, but it's fundamentally very familiar human shittiness and problems that drive a lot of the story.
The powers are definitely weird and creative, but it's still unmistakably a superhero story. Bugs, darkness, flight and strength and durability, contact biokinesis. Superheroes and supervillains in costumes fighting each other, hijinks and blood loss.
Except that there's Endbringers, and Echidna, and Cauldron, and Scion. The culmination of the story is peeling back the mask of a familiar superhero setting to reveal a cosmic horror story.
Ward is set in the aftermath of that.
There's a massive megacity that still doesn't have a name. It's basically a country, but it's led by a mayor. Infrastructure is just barely there, lots of people are still living in tents, the internet is just barely running and not everywhere. People with superpowers are no longer just superheroes and supervillains, they're... what, exactly? So many threats that were once contained are now running free, the ratio of normal territory to gonzo hellscapes has been turned on its head. The skyline is torn apart by portals to other worlds, and it's fucking with the weather. There's a political movement against people with superpowers, and there are people affected by superpowers with their own identity, and both of those groups are very conspicuous in how hard it is to treat them as an analogy for any other groups. People are estranged from their own environment, and it's a brave, terrible new world in the shadow of a slain god.
The superpowers are less straightforward. Being unable to be pointed at, impregnation tentacles that fuck with the effectiveness of other powers, lots of cluster triggers and grab-bags, etc. The powers are more obviously reflective of the cosmic horror story people have had to wake up to, unfamiliar, weird, and deeply upsetting.
The characters are also pretty dang weird. Rain is a lot like Alec, and I think he might actually be the most normal of the bunch. Body dysphoria+, sharing a body with a sibling, attachment issues, living as a clone or as a sort-of clone. Not totally unrelatable, to be sure, there are parallels with real life experiences, but these are more their own thing, not so recognizable.
This makes Victoria kind of the perfect protagonist, matching the themes: she's estranged from who she was and her old connections; her home city is gone; she's gone through something absolutely mind-bendingly terrible that is among the worst that people can experience IRL and then some; her power has changed; she was raised into the weirdness of superheroics and is pioneering how it looks in this new world; she's knowledgeable about the weirdness surrounding powers, giving her a good eye for understanding the new world.
I think a decent fraction of Ward's relative unpopularity sadly comes from this: estrangement from the once familiar. The characters can't be related to as easily, the powers aren't so iconic, and the setting feels undefined. I don't think Ward is inherently worse for it, it's just a bit of a tougher sell.

Autistic Anime Boys Side B Round 1 Match 25
Tumblr media
Propaganda:
Rei -
"Buddy Daddies is a story about buddies who are hitmen. (And later become daddies while doing a hit. It makes sense in context) One of those buddies is Kazuki Kurusu, but the other is Rei Suwa.
Rei's peculiarities include:
He's a content, lonely introvert.
He's shit at self-care, spending all night playing video games and forgetting to clean up and such.
He sleeps in the bathtub.
He's not good at expressing emotion.
He doesn't like tomatoes, mushrooms, or spicy foods. Kazuki considers him a picky eater.
Lots of little stuff that makes Kazuki call him immature.
And most importantly, to me, is his general vibe with Miri. After getting used to the disruptions to his routine that come with adopting a kindergartener, he's happy to have Miri around. But, unlike Kazuki, he struggles to express his affection. He doesn't understand how, or what a kid like Miri needs/wants. But even though he's bad at it, he tries.
I'm pretty sure most of this is supposed to be either comical immaturity or the emotional scars inflicted by his abusive hit-dad. But I won't let that stop me." (propaganda courtesy of @greatwyrmgold)
Gin -
"First of all, he's canonically autistic :). He appears to have a special interest in animals, feeling the most safe when wearing a mix of various different animal related clothes (A pair of bat wings, a monkey tail, a hooded cape with cat ears and large animal paw mittens). He carries around a comfort dog toy called Mew-Chan who is adorable, and he also has verbal tics where he both barks and meows.
This kid is twelve and in a death game btw- he is one of the few people that canonically survives in every route, at least up to the current point in the story. He's a ray of sunshine, the literal glue of the group who holds them all together. He's such a genuinely sweet kid and everyone loves him both in and out of canon so he's the best boy in my eyes.
(The line where he tells the protagonist about his diagnosis and why he wears an animal costume)
"I don't really get all the details, but… I have this sorta condition called autism, meow… If I don't wear this… I feel really embarrassed. I get nervous, woof… I know it's weird, meow…""

A chronological analysis on Twilight and Yor - Part 8
*This is part of an ongoing post series. If you missed the Introduction/Part 1, click here*
----------
The next day, Yor's incredibly low self-esteem resurfaces, not only from the events of the night before, but also from Anya commenting that she's a bad cook (it's subtle, but Anya was probably going to say something about Yor's true identity when she read Twilight's mind and realized he was suspicious of Yor, but then thought better of it).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In Yor's view, not only can she not cook, but she couldn't even go through with the kiss, and it was only thanks to Loid that everything with Yuri was smoothed over in the end. She misinterprets him being suspicious of her as him being upset with how useless of a wife she's been.
@greatwyrmgold suggests that Yor has impostor syndrome and/or social anxiety, and I agree with that. We saw a bit of it early on when she saved Anya from the thugs who wanted to steal her Eden uniform, where the only thing she could focus on after was what a failure she was for destroying the groceries in the process. @twiyoriz pointed out another example way back when she first met Loid at the tailors. When he commented on how pretty she was and she started to pursue him before finding out he had a child (and probably a wife too), she never thought he did anything wrong by flirting with her – she only blamed herself for almost asking out a married man. It's even worse in this episode. She can barely concentrate at work and ends up confiding in her coworkers about her situation. She even thinks about giving Loid some of the money she earns from her assassin jobs so she could be useful to him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's interesting to note that during her encounter with the fake SSS officers, Yor only starts to revert to "assassin mode" when Franky makes a grab at her. But even then, her response is that he shouldn't touch her because she's a married woman, not because she doesn't want to be touched. She then goes further by threatening them if they do anything to harm Loid or Yuri. As usual, she really only loses it when someone threatens a person she loves, but not when she's the one under attack. Even afterwards, she never blames the SSS officers for totally screwing up and almost making a false arrest…all she can think about is what she did wrong – almost getting arrested and almost attacking a government agent.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ProfessorViral made some good points about this part of Yor's character in his video analysis . To summarize, Yor dedicated her entire life to raising Yuri and ensuring his success. This more or less became her purpose in life, and because she never had time for other "normal" relationships like with friends or lovers, the only purpose she could see for herself is how she could be useful to him, which she was by becoming an assassin. But when she took on this new role of (fake) wife/mother, because of how she had lived her life until then, she can only see her worth in terms of her usefulness to Loid and Anya, just like with Yuri. She doesn't know how else to live besides being useful to others, yet the people she wants to be useful to don't need the one thing she knows how to offer: money from her assassin jobs. Because her assassin profession holds no benefit to them, she assumes being a "normal" wife/mother is what she has to be instead. Even though Loid and Anya never demanded this from her, outside influences, like her coworkers, the Eden interviewers, and the SSS, do – while she gets nothing but adoration in the Forger household, outside of that she's bombarded with expectations of what a wife/mother should and shouldn't be. Because of all this, she becomes conflicted, which only worsens her imposter syndrome.
Twilight does well keeping his emotions in check throughout this episode. But what's interesting is that, while he denied feeling guilty about being suspicious of Yor, when Franky tells him to keep his emotions out of the picture, he doesn't deny anything. He pauses for a moment (a pause in the anime, while the manga adds an extra panel of his placid expression to signify a pause) before bantering with Franky about the fake mask he was wearing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But this won't be the last time Twilight doesn't try to deny feeling emotions for his (fake) family when someone brings it up. And yet, remember how quick he was to deny anything flirtatious about himself and Yor when Anya mentioned it? There's a lot of moments like this that show that Twilight is much more likely to lose his composure around his (fake) family than with anyone else. I think at least one reason he's quicker to dismiss his feelings in front of Yor and Anya is because he knows if he let's any deeper emotions show, they may feel a need to reciprocate, and that will only make things more difficult for when he eventually has to leave them.
When Twilight finally meets up with Yor, he sees how depressed she is. She even flat out tells him that she's useless because she can't keep her own clothes clean (something he's to blame for).
Tumblr media
It's here that Twilight returns the confidence boost that Yor gave him not too long ago when he started thinking he was a failure as a father. While it's again debatable how much of what he's saying here is just "for the mission" stuff (since he can't let Yor get depressed) it's obvious his remarks about how exhausting it can be to always put on a performance, is spoken from the heart. In this case and many others, while "for the mission" may be the reason Twilight says many of the nice things he says to Yor, Anya, and others, what he actually says are things he truly believes in, especially when talking about a broader topic like this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Twilight is momentarily thrown off his groove when Yor tells him that she's glad she married him. For the first time since he started being suspicious of her, he looks noticeably surprised at something she said.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He was probably expecting just a "thank you" or "I'll keep doing my best." As I suggested during Yuri's visit, at this point he may be starting to feel something for Yor, so the fact that she so sincerely said that she's glad she married him right after he put her through such a bad situation, probably poked at his conscience. His expression immediately darkens (a sign that his true feelings want to surface) as he recalls Franky's words about him feeling guilty for suspecting her. He then tightly clutches the bug in his hands before throwing it away, then suggests that they get a cake to celebrate their one-year wedding anniversary – all of which are subtle but clear reactions that show his satisfaction at not having to be suspicious of her anymore.
This is all just more evidence of how well Twilight and Yor complement each other, not just as parents to Anya, but for each other as individuals. While their core values and morals of wanting to do good in the world are the same, their personalities and how they view everything around them is vastly different. As also mentioned in Twiyoriz's post, Twilight, being a spy, always expects the worst from others, is always suspicious, and as such, refuses to let emotions cloud the reasoning skills he needs to survive. Yor, however, is the opposite – she always sees the best in others, will always put blame on herself first, and she reacts by emotions before reason. And yet, when Twilight was trying to overanalyze Anya's studying motivation and his own ineptitude as a father, Yor brought in the much-needed emotional side of things that he was missing. Likewise, in this case, when Yor's emotional instability was getting the best of her, Twilight's words helped her put things in a rational perspective that she never would have thought of on her own. A balance of strictness and rationalizing, as well as emotional understanding and support, is needed not just in parenting, but in a relationship as well.

airi can be both despicable and pitiable at the same time.
Absolutely she can! In fact, I think OnK's willingness to humanize her and highlight that her behavior is not the result of her being innately, inexplicably Just Evil but the result of being a person wounded by a corrupt system and choosing to perpetuate it as a way of reclaiming control/power is a huuuuge part of why it's handling this topic as well as it is.
The issue is not OnK choosing to humanize Airi; the issue is that the way the narrative frames and gives weight to its explanation of her side over Hikaru's. @greatwyrmgold wrote up a post about this chapter that summarizes my thoughts on this so well that I would just be paraphrasing him if I tried to explain it myself, so I'll just quote it here:
Showing Ai confronting Airi about the latter's sex crimes, then pivoting to talking about how women are abused in the entertainment industry and more broadly...I like the two scenes in isolation, but putting them right next to each other has Unfortunate Implications. It implies that the latter is an explanation for Airi's behavior, and hence that such an explanation is more important than how Airi's abuse affected Hikaru.
I do think this was accidental and more of a result of Akasaka's habit of over-explaining some of the industry critique in times and places that aren't great for the pacing but it's nevertheless an unfortunate choice.

RE: runin-reads response: "I have and I'm still better about Penny."
Also, I haven't been following RWBY since Volume 3 or so. I know Penny was rebooted at some point, but what happened to her in Volume 8 that you're either bitter or better about?
She was brought back, became the Winter Maiden, hacked, given a human body as a way to overcome the hack trying to force her to self destruct and then promptly killed again in the next episode.
