About Nucear Permanent Disposal Sites
Tumblr media
So, a couple of days ago someone commented under my one blog about nuclear energy what boiled down to: "But what about the waste? We need to take responsibility for the next thousands of years of humanity!" And yes, that is very much the favorite argument for the anti-nuclear lobby... and it is pretty much based on the science of the 1980s.
What a lot of people do not understand is:
How little nuclear waste we actually have.
How little of that waste is actually the highly radiating stuff.
How well we can contain this stuff.
That we actually have figured out a solution for permanent disposal.
Tumblr media
First need about nuclear waste you have to understand that most of it is not that dangerous. Most of the waste we get out of the nuclear facilities is actually just stuff that was around the radiation and got slightly radiated. 90% of all nuclear waste is stuff like items that just happened to be within the nuclear facilities for a long while. Tools, wortk clothing and so on. This stuff radiates, yes, but it is technically not dangerous levels AND it will stop doing so within 100 years max. We literally do not need to worry about it. Those yellow barrels you will keep seeing in old media that somehow end up mutating people? Yeah, those are used for this kind of waste. And to be quite frank, we are super extra that we store this either way. Because we have waste from other types of facilities (like coal power, but also from places like airport) where this kinda waste also happens and we... just throw it away normally.
Then there is about 7% of nuclear waste that is a bit more radiated. This is mostly metal parts and such that were in direct contact with the nuclear elements. This gets more radiated and as such will radiate for a longer time. But, this, too, is radation that will be gone or down to safe levels within a few centuries.
Only 3% is waste, that is high-level radiating and even from this not all will radiate for millennia! In fact we have gotten real good with recycling this high-level waste and if we are now talking SciFi scenarios like Solarpunk, we could actually just switch to thorium based reactors, where almost all of it is recyclable.
But... Even with the high level radiating stuff that we cannot recycle and need to permanently store, we... actually long have a solution for it.
Tumblr media
You have to realize that those fuel cells are actually pretty small. And that we have materials that can basically protect you from the radiation. So, we basically just take those small spend fuel cells, put them into glass, put that into several layers of metal, put all of that into a deep, deep hole the ground and then fill everything up with clay. And... done.
Chances are: Nobody is gonna find it. Because it is gonna be so deep underground. Even if they did: It is protected enough that nobody is gonna die of radiation poisoning directly. Not only that: But the best rock material to burry this stuff in, is already radiating. So... Like, duh. We already have super radiactive stuff in nature.
And even if someone got radiation poisoning... Unless you suppose that humans of the future are dumber than most animals... They will learn: "Dude died. Area bad. Do not dig there."
Scientifically speaking... The entire nuclear waste thing is such a fucking non-issue, that keeps getting pushed up mostly by fossil fuels (that, again, also produce radiating waste!) to keep folks from going for a full renewable + nuclear energy mix. Aka: The clean option.
The reason why so many politicians do not just agree to those disposal options is that a) they do not understand it themselves and b) nor do their constituents and there is sooooo much fearmongering about this going on.
Again, I am not saying that we should go full nuclear energy. But rather for an energy mix of renewables and nuclear. Be CO2 neutral. Because I can tell you one thing: If we do not do that, there are not gonna be humans in 3023 we have to worry about. Because they are all fucking dead, with the planet being inhospitable to life.

"A survey of 2,000 Americans delved into their sentiments around environmentalism and found that a significant majority—seven in 10—feel they’ve become more ethically responsible as they’ve gotten older (71%).
Over the past year, U.S. adults have also been taking small steps in their everyday lives to do the right thing—such as starting conversations with their loved ones about going green (39%), donating clothing (37%), and purchasing sustainable products (36%).
When it comes to doing their part, other regular habits include avoiding littering (51%), recycling (49%), and using compostable eating materials, like plates and cups (46%).
The poll, sponsored by Chinet, found that, when asked about the businesses and brands they want to support, a majority of Americans said it’s important that they share the same values (73%).
Gen Z (77%) and millennials (82%) were especially likely to say this is the case.
Nearly half of all respondents have stopped supporting or using a brand because their values didn’t align with something they’ve said or done (48%), with the average person leaving five brands behind.
“As part of our 2030 strategy, we are committed to innovating our products to be recyclable, compostable or reusable, in order to help consumers enjoy gatherings knowing they are taking steps toward being more sustainable,” said Chinet brand manager Melissa Rakos.
“Hosts and guests alike shouldn’t worry about sacrificing convenience for sustainability,” she added. “Utilizing products that are made from recycled material and ridding unrecyclable foam items completely is an easy way for people to get started with making these changes in their everyday lives.”
A similar poll of Brits in the UK, found three-quarters of respondents described themselves as greener today than they were a decade ago—with a large majority believing they have a responsibility to live a sustainable lifestyle.
Making greener choices than ever before, 58 percent believe that being environmentally-conscious is a ‘badge of honor’."

Ponder this for a moment. 🤔
The wind farm in Mt. Pulaski has been running for 3 1/2 years. They have been replacing the generators in all the wind towers. There are 100 of them in this wind farm. So evidently the life span on the generators on these things is about 3 to 4 years. It takes 12 semi trucks and trailers, A 9 axle 500,000 pound crane, A 100,000 pound crane and 12 pick up trucks to change each generator. That is a huge amount of diesel fuel being used to maintain these wind towers. And the "Green Groups" would like You to believe they are all fueled by magic fairy dust.

GALTx eNews: Why Is GALT Going Green For The Irish?
Most of you are probably already aware that Greyhound racing has declined dramatically in the United States in recent years. Only two tracks remain operational and they are both in West Virginia. With the decline of racing, fewer American Greyhounds are now available for adoption and the available retirees are finding homes on the East Coast. We simply do not have enough American Greyhounds available now to meet the adoption demand.
Meanwhile, Greyhound racing remains popular in Ireland with 17 stadiums still holding races. In the neighboring United Kingdom, more than 20 tracks still hold races. While some of the Irish and UK retirees find homes in Europe, they have to compete with the Spanish Galgos also seeking adoptive homes in the region. The Irish Greyhounds need access to more potential adoptive homes than are available to them regionally.
We saw both an opportunity and a solution in these circumstances. GALT has long had the infrastructure needed to help find homes for retired racers and Ireland has the retired racers needing to find adoptive homes. We hope our ongoing deliveries of hounds from Ireland will prove to be a perfect match leading to many happy hounds and families!

Why don't we build a renewable energy grid NOW?
Tumblr media
Renewables are developing fast now. Like really fast. It kinda seems there is new breakthroughs every other week. We are figuring out how to make Solar more effective, how to use wind better and how to use ocean currents. And it always brings up the question: Well, why don't we do that now?
To be fair: We are investing a lot into renewables. A lot of countries are. But most countries are not investing as much as they had promised to - and are still putting money in coal mining and other fossil fuels instead.
I kinda studied the ideal stuff for this. Economics and GIS, with a heavy helping of ecology in there.
So, let me tell you abot the two problems:
We currently do have an issue with the way we build our energy grids. Because currently the energy grid is build around the idea that we have few big power plants, from where the energy originates. But with renewables we have several smaller "power plants". And that is not how the system currently works. There is a proposed solution to his: Build micro grids instead of macro grids. Something, that would also make the energy grid less vunerable to large scale black outs. But... It would mean a lot of rebuilding of the grid and it would add to the costs. But that is only one problem... the other...
You have to realize, that there is a lot of money currently bound in coal. Like, a real lot. The power companies and their investors have literally invested billions (or internationally rather trillions) both into the coal plants and the coal mines - as well as into the rights to look for more coal in certain areas. If we were to decide now, that we go green, that money would be gone. Like POOF and gone. Because once we go green, they cannot resell those mines and plants for any proper amount of money. And I agree, that should not make a difference, but... currently money buys power and influence. And as long as that is the case these companies will do anything in their power to prevent us going green. Because otherwise the money currently they have currently bound to coal will be lost to them.
Again, I agree that this is wrong. But... Literally the only thing the states could do, was to buy those mines and power plants from them with tax payer money.
Or, you know... We could do a revolution and get rid of capitalism. *coughs*
