One Thing Forever True - Chapter 11
Weeks passed, and the three of them - Belle, Baelfire, and Rumpelstiltskin - fell into an odd sort of routine.  Belle woke, as she always did, with the sun.  She would perform her morning ablutions, dressing in one of the simple linen gowns that had been provided for her in her bedroom in the East Wing.  Rumpelstiltskin’s ban on entering the West Wing meant that she had no access to her old bedroom.
Once she was washed and dressed, she would go down to the kitchen and ask for a modest breakfast.  Rumpelstiltskin had enchanted various inanimate object to respond wordlessly to her commands.  Candelabras would light up when she entered a room, the tea carriage would appear with a lovely purple and white tea set whenever she fancied a cup, and a small wooden clock would race to her side any time she wondered aloud what time it was.  In the kitchen, all she had to do was politely ask for a bowl of porridge.  Within moments, a tray would be waiting for her with porridge, milk, honey, fresh berries, and a tall glass of freshly-squeezed fruit juice.  She would have her breakfast right there in the kitchen.  The dining hall felt echoingly empty by herself; at least in the kitchen, she could watch the enchanted dishes wash themselves and pretend that she had company.

Stumbled through the long goodbye One last kiss, then catch your flight Right when I was just about to fall I told myself, don't get attached But in my mind, I play it back Spinning faster than the plane that took you...
Joel tries not to call every day.
He knows you need your space, your time to thrive and work and live the life you chose, so far from home.
Well, his home, not yours. Not anymore.
It’s usually every other day, more than that if you call with news. Not that there’s much of that; the play you'd been "starring in" had closed to the tune of some less-than-stellar reviews, you’d landed a couple regional commercials, and finally found yourself an agent that at least seemed to have your best interests at heart.
You'd called Joel to share every one of those moments with him. He’s the first person you call any time there’s something in your life worth sharing, it’s just that those instances are exceptionally rare, to say the least.
So Joel calls you mostly. In the evenings, if he’s not working late, midday if he has an hour for lunch. Once, after midnight when he’d awoken from a particularly vivid dream - one involving you in the dress you’d worn at your going-away party - he’d called you, and you’d whispered sweet nothings into the phone while Joel’d stroked himself desperately under the sheets in the desolate confines of his bedroom walls, the two of you getting off together in hushed whispers, miles apart.
That was four months ago - and it had only happened the one time - but Joel clings to the memory like moss on a damp wall.
“Are you touchin’ yourself too?” he breathed into the phone held firmly against his ear, his fingers already wrapped around his cock, hard and leaking over his knuckles, leftover from the oh-my-god-why?-I’m-thirty-fucking-five-years-old wet dream he’d been shaken awake by.
“Yes,” you whispered back, velvet soft, sending Joel's imagination running wild at what you might have looked like, hand between your thighs, the phone tucked inside the delicate crook of your neck and pressed hotly to your ear.
“Good girl,” he hummed and he listened as you fought to contain a moan, probably fearful of one your roommates overhearing.
“Are you…are you hard for me, Joel?”
You sounded so unsure to Joel's ears, which was fair. You hadn't exactly established what the two of you were or would be after that crucial Christmas visit. So a salacious phone call in the middle of the night to tell you how he was "dreamin' about that pretty mouth of yours" probably (rightfully) caught you off guard.
Still, just the sound of your voice, playing along so willingly, had Joel groaning softly, the gravelly noise a hollow thing through the speaker of the shitty cell phone you'd been coerced into buying ("everyone here just has one, I guess").
“So fuckin’ hard for you, sweetheart. Wish you were here to feel it.”
“W-what would you do if I was?”
Fuck.
Joel picked up the pace of his strokes as he considered that, his voice growing ragged as he worked to answer your question.
“Wanna get my hands on that pussy, baby. You all wet for me?”
You whimpered breathlessly and hummed a quiet, “Mhmm."
“How many fingers you got inside you?” he asked, focusing his grip towards the base of his cock, pausing his strokes and trying in vain perhaps to draw things out a bit, at least until he could hear your hushed response. He needed to know, needed to picture you playing with yourself on other end of the line, something that could help him feel like you were here with him, for real.
“J-just one.”
Joel threw his head back, squeezing his cock tighter and resuming his steady strokes at the image of you with a finger in your cunt, biting his lip hard when he thought of the way it would coat with your juices, how much he'd love to suck the sweet slick clean off your soaked digit.
You made him feel so fucking filthy. You made him feel like a man. He needed you here, damnit.
“Put another one.”
He wasn't sure at first if you obeyed, but then you both moaned quietly in unison, Joel pulling at his cock as you presumably added another finger. Joel could hear your breath catching in your throat, a delicious sound that made him wonder if you were curling your fingers inside yourself, like he'd have done if he were there.
"How's that feel?" he asked, voice strained.
"Mmmm, s'good, Joel," you sighed. The sound of you uttering his name in that contented, breathy hue had Joel losing his rhythm a bit - his motions now a fevered, frantic thing, too rushed. "Wish it was you, though."
You had no idea how much he wished the same thing.
"Me too, baby, me too, wanna get my mouth on you so bad." Breathless, crazed-sounding, he meant it. "Wanna taste you again."
A soft whine from you cut through the wire, making Joel's dick twitch in his palm, as he continued to pump himself with that same determined vigour.
"Remember the first time I sucked your dick?" you asked then and Joel's mouth fell open involuntarily, his hand once again freezing on his cock because he would have fucking come right then and there just at the thought of it.
It's exactly what he'd been dreaming about before he'd called you. You on your knees with your pretty dress under you, his forearms braced on the dresser he'd helped build, the way you'd looked so needy for it, like he'd been giving you the sweetest gift in the world. The way you'd looked up from under your lashes when you'd swirled your tongue around the tip.
"Think about it all the time, sweetheart," he managed to grunt softly. Truthfully.
He could never forget it.
Not that it could ever compare, but on the phone with you that night, conjuring up the memory, he flicked his thumb over the tip of his leaking cock, as though he could ever recreate the feeling of your tongue on him.
"Me too."
Joel's hips bucked up into his hand at that, another phantom memory playing at the edges of his mind - the one of you bouncing on his cock last Christmas, your shuddering form coming around him, his big hands on your back as he'd held you flush against him when you did, so he could properly feel all of it. All of you.
"You gettin' close, darlin'? Playin' with your clit?" Joel breathed into the phone, feeling his own release creeping up on him again as the reverie flashed behind his eyelids, clenched tightly shut with concentration. Trying to make sure you got there first.
"Fuck - yes," you hissed and your choked little gasps made the muscles in his guts tighten, right on the edge as the movements of his hand grew sloppier still.
But it wasn't enough. You were being so quiet.
"Let me hear you come, baby, just a little," he begged, voice wrecked, cock rigid and angry in his fist. “Let me hear those pretty sounds you make.”
It's what he missed the most, the desperate whines that had fallen from your lips when he'd had his mouth on you the last time; the prettiest, sexiest noises he'd ever heard.
Roommates be damned, if Joel was begging you for something, you were never going to deny him.
He listened as your breathing stuttered, picturing your fingers rubbing furious circles over your clit, until you let a high-pitched moan slip from you as you came.
That was all Joel needed to coax out his own climax, hot seed spilling over his knuckles - his last thought of you, bent over before him on a twin bed, that very first time.
That's his favourite call - or at least, it's the one that makes him the least miserable.
Of course, there'd also been the call that had come on New Year's Eve; he likes that one too. You'd made a point to call two hours early - your time, just to catch him right at midnight - his time.
"Happy New Year, Joel!" you'd screamed into the receiver, his face splitting into a genuine smile as he'd held the phone away from his face at the piercing sound of your voice hitting his ear drum.
"Happy New Year, sweetheart," he'd replied, heart bursting at the warmth in your tone, how thoughtful you'd been to consider the time difference. How you'd remembered him. "Bit early for you though, innit?"
"You better not be kissing anyone," you'd slurred, ignoring his question, already drunk - out somewhere, from what Joel could surmise.
"Not a chance," he'd assured you. He'd glanced over at Sarah, making sure she was still passed out on the couch beside him before going on,
"I'd kiss you if you were here, though."
He'd said it softly, so as not to wake her. Meanwhile, Dick Clark had quietly shined on the TV, casting blue and white light across Joel's dark living room as the big ball had touched down in Times Square.
"Me too," you'd said, and Joel could hear the truth in your voice. His chest had throbbed in time with the distant boom of fireworks outside his window, each one like a bomb going off in his gut. If you were home you'd hear them too, but through the phone, there's just Joel.
"Here's to a good year," Joel'd said, not an ounce of hope in the declaration, toasting to no one with the beer in his hand.
You'd just sighed, long and anguished.
'Cause in the beginning, in the days following that Christmas visit, there had been lots of days you'd called with tears in your voice, sobbing into the phone about long working hours, or some new rift with your roommates or - the calls he'd selfishly longed for - how much you missed him.
"I'm trying so hard, Joel," you'd cry, while he'd fight to stay composed, just listening patiently and offering comfort where he could.
"I know, baby, I know."
"Maybe I should just give up."
Yeah, you should. Come home. Be here.
"No, you can't, sweetheart," he'd say instead. "You just gotta keep goin'."
"I miss you so much," you'd sigh in that bleak, cracked, longing way, shattering Joel's heart into jagged shards every damn time.
"I miss you too, baby." Please come back. It's not too late.
Those calls don't come so much anymore, as you'd thrown yourself into your work, and time had pulled you further and further from the memory of your last visit to Austin.
Time.
Joel feels frozen in it, while it just keeps moving ahead for you.
The days he doesn’t call are boring and long, repetitive and lonely save for the time he gets with Sarah. He works the same jobs, eats the same food, drinks the same coffee. Feels the same anxious pang when you don’t call first and it has to be him, again.
Sometimes he’ll go by your dad’s, but that’s less often now, ever since he and Tommy had finished up the renovations in the attic.
God, the attic job. That had proven to be an exceptionally awkward thing, considering it had come hot on the heels of the Inevitable Talk with your father. A talk that Joel had been expecting, but which had still turned out to be painfully uncomfortable nonetheless.
Although not necessarily what he’d imagined.
Your dad had shown up at his side door after dropping you at the airport. He hadn’t seemed angry, so Joel had led him in the door and offered him a beer, which your dad had accepted with a reverent, “Yeah.”
Yeah, Joel too.
Joel’d stared at the wood on the kitchen table, and like he couldn’t help himself, broke the silence before your dad could.
“How’d, uh - how’d she seem?”
Your dad’d sighed, taking a long sip of beer.
“Sad,” he’d said.
“Look - ”
But Joel’d been cut off by Sarah coming in the front door then, home right on time from soccer practice. Her eyes had widened as she’d assessed the scene, who Joel had been sitting across from.
“I’m…just gonna be in my room,” she’d muttered awkwardly.
“There’s mac and cheese on the stove," Joel'd told her.
Wasting no time, she'd snatched the entire pot off the hob and slinked quickly out of the room, shooting Joel this knowing glance on the way that seemed to say, good luck - sorry. And also - we'll talk later.
Your dad’s eyes had followed her out of the kitchen as she’d went.
“She’s a good kid,” he’d said.
“Yeah, she is."
"S'funny a thing, havin' kids..." your dad'd started.
Christ, here it comes.
"You wanna protect 'em," he'd continued, tone level but still managing to fill Joel with a healthy sense of dread. "But you also gotta trust 'em. And respect 'em enough to respect their decisions."
A beat.
"Even the wrong ones."
Joel'd cleared his throat, shifting in his seat uneasily.
"That what I am?" he'd asked. "The wrong decision?"
Your dad had shook his head.
"I wasn't talkin' about you."
That had Joel finally looking up from the table to stare at the man in confusion. What had he been suggesting then?
"She shouldn't be out there in California," your dad'd said with another shake of his head and a sip of his beer.
That had taken Joel aback momentarily.
"You don't think she can do it?" Joel'd asked, brows furrowing.
"No, she probably could. If she actually wanted to."
Joel'd just stared back at him, that same dumbfounded look on his face.
"She's determined," your dad had grumbled. "Too proud. She decided she wanted to go out there and do this and now she thinks she can't back out. I'm not sayin' she's not good. I'm just sayin' I don't think it's where her heart's at."
"So where's it at then?" Joel'd asked.
Your dad had just given Joel this knowing look.
You know where it is, dumbass.
"Right," Joel'd replied, around another mouthful of beer. Then, for the first time since he'd met your dad, Joel'd turned on his very best let-me-date-your-daughter Texan manners.
"Listen, sir, I wasn't tryna complicate anything here," he'd said. "The whole thing just - it got away from me."
That was something of an understatement.
"She said you tried to be responsible. What's'at mean?"
Joel'd taken another sip of beer, smiling in spite of himself at the thought of you trying to protect him.
"Guess it means I always knew where this was gonna go," Joel'd postulated. "She didn't wanna overthink things."
Joel'd bristled at the memory - "We don't have to overthink any of this, Joel" - so many months ago now, your arms wrapped around him from behind, face pressed into his back. Course, by then it had already been too late, Joel having already envisioned a whole new life for you after that first kiss on the deck - one where you never left, one where you stayed here with him, slotting into his life with ease. A cursed vision, one he'd known would never be.
How could he not have overthought things? Joel, unlike you, lived in the real world.
"That was your first mistake, buddy," your dad'd said with a shake of his head.
Didn't Joel know it. He'd nodded his agreement.
"You know somethin', Joel? I actually think you'd be real good for her. You're a good man - stable. And you got a lotta love for your kid."
Joel had waited for the inevitable "but" and your dad hadn't disappointed -
"But you gotta give her space now. If she wants to come back, she will. You understand?"
Yeah, he gets it.
Doesn't mean he's gonna listen.
So he doesn’t cross the street much these days.
He would lie and say he’s just been too busy with Sarah or Tommy or work but you’d know the truth if he ever bothered to tell you.
He doesn’t go because it hurts. He doesn’t go because the driveway’s where he kissed you and your bedroom’s where his initials are carved into the dresser and the back deck’s where the whole damned ordeal began.
The more time passes, the less he wants to think about any of it.
-
But then there's the call that comes today.
The droning of the buzz saw drowns out the sound of the phone ringing. It also drowns out Tommy's booming voice, calling Joel's name over and over.
"Joel!" he yells again, this time with a firm hand on Joel's shoulder where he works over the plywood, which finally gets the older Miller's attention.
"What?" Joel shouts back, glancing cautiously over his shoulder, voice rising over the metallic hum of the saw. But Tommy is giving him the signal to shut the thing off, phone in hand - which is what ultimately ends up holding Joel's attention.
He clicks off the saw, removing his protective goggles and repeating himself, quieter now - "What?"
"Phone's for you," Tommy says with a lop-sided grin. Easy enough to guess who's calling then.
"She called the damn work site?" Joel asks, surprised you'd managed to track them down. They're working a job up in Georgetown, some wealthy suburbanite paying big money for easy work.
Tommy just shrugs.
Joel snatches the phone from his brother and holds it up to his ear, with a gruff, "Hello?" before tuning into the crackling sound of music playing and glass clattering and voices chattering and you, loudly talking into the other end -
"Joel!" you say - almost shout. "Are you there, can you hear me? I'm at a payphone, the stupid cell phone died!"
He steps away from the work site, trying - on his end at least - to quiet some of the background noise.
"Yeah, yeah I can hear ya fine, are you okay?"
The midday calls are rare and your voice sounds so frantic - he can't help it; worry's the first place his mind goes.
"I got a job, Joel! I got an arc!" you say excitedly then, voice just barely rising over the clamorous bedlam behind you.
"You got a what, now?" Joel asks, sticking a finger in his one ear to hear you better.
"A three-episode arc on a TV show! Oh - shit - one sec - "
Some rustling on the other end as you disappear momentarily, and then a murmured, "Thanks" that sounds like you but far away, and then you're back with a, "You still there?"
Joel furrows his brows, trying to make sense of it all.
"Where're ya at right now?"
"I'm out celebrating!" you shriek. "Didn't you hear what I said?"
Not really, but -
"I - yeah I heard, three episodes, that's - that's amazing, sweetheart."
Then there's another voice cutting through the wire - male, drunk.
"Eyyyyy! Let me buy you a drink, baby girl! This is HUGE!"
Joel hears your responding giggle, along with the sound of fabric brushing against fabric (an embrace) and glass tapping glass (cheers).
"I'll be right there!" you tell the faceless voice.
"Whoz'at?" Joel grumbles, his grip on the phone tightening as he bites back the stupid, hot, festering jealousy suddenly brewing in his belly.
"Nobody - well, Adam - he works with my agent, they're throwing this like, brunch party thing for me."
Weird, because you've never mentioned him to Joel before.
She's not yours, idiot, he tells himself.
"Nice," is the best response he can come up with.
"Well, anyway, I just wanted you to be the first to know," you say then - your voice oozing devotion - but not enough to quell the twisted knife of envy digging bitterly in Joel's core.
"Seems like Adam already knew."
God-fucking-damnit.
Why'd he say that? Does he seriously think he's entitled to every morsel of information in your life? Over some kid you work with and that he doesn't even fucking know?
Apparently, yeah.
You're quiet for a moment and Joel would've wondered if the payphone had run out of minutes if not for the noisy bar din still echoing through the receiver.
"I meant the first person back home," you amend, and Joel kicks himself when he hears the tinge of hurt in your tone.
Joel clears his throat, instantly ashamed of the senseless reaction.
"Well, I - I'm glad you did, sweetheart," he says, trying his damndest to soften the edge in his voice.
"Okay - um, shit - it's asking me for more quarters, I'm all out. Can I call you tomorrow?"
"You can call me any time you want, darlin'."
"Bye, Joel."
"Bye - "
He's cut off as the line disconnects, out of time.
-
Sleep evades Joel that night.
Three episodes on a TV show. What would that mean? How long would that steal you from him? How many more months till you came home again?
He morosely ponders the thought with his head in his hands, hunched over where he sits on the edge of his bed, fingers dragging over the skin of his face as though he could scrape away the memory of the phone call like a pesky scab.
"Dad?"
Sarah's voices comes softly through his bedroom door, shaking him hastily out of his dreary reverie.
"You still up?" she asks, letting herself in the open door.
Joel shakes his head disapprovingly, offering her a soft smile.
"I should be askin' you that."
Should being the operative word. He should be attending to his daughter, not moping uselessly after you.
Instead, as ever, it's Sarah who's looking out for him, joining him on the edge of the bed and leaning into his side.
"You okay?" she asks, head on Joel's shoulder.
"Yeah," Joel mumbles, voice thick.
Keep it together, he tells himself. Sarah doesn't need to see you cry.
"Yeah, m'alright," he says, sounding anything but.
"Wow, well, I'm convinced," Sarah quips, wrapping her little arms around his waist and Joel can hear her rolling her eyes. "I know you talked to her today, she called here first; I told her where you guys were."
He should've known it was her who'd put you in touch with him. And man, the kid's too insightful for her own good. He's not sure where she gets that from, 'cause he doesn't think it's from him.
"I know it's sucky right now," she continues soothingly. "But it's gonna get better."
Joel clears his throat at the simple sentiment, trying to believe it.
"You think so?" he says, emotion coating his tone as he squeezes her in a little tighter against him.
"Yeah, I do," she responds, sitting up and away from him then. "Or, just a thought...you could be all romantic and actually go see her."
Joel's shaking his head before she can finish speaking - as if he hadn't already considered that dozens of times.
"And leave you here all alone? Come on."
They share a smirk but then Sarah shrugs.
"Just sayin'. I think you should do it."
His smile shifts to something more placating, willing her to understand how much more complicated things were than that.
"It's late, you should go to bed."
"Okay, but only if you do too."
"Deal."
-
He's dreaming again.
Of you, of course.
But it's not like the other times; you're not on your knees in front of him or sitting on his cock or bent over the twin bed under a canopy of glow-in-the-dark stars.
No, this time, you're locked in a tight embrace on the side of the interstate, as though you'd met him halfway somewhere at a lonely truck stop, hands interlocked behind his neck, while his grip your waist tightly. He's breathing in your scent, committing it to memory because he knows he'll have to leave again soon - always losing you, always saying goodbye.
Except...no. This time, there's something new. Dread is replaced by a sense of permanence as the truck stop melts away and there you both are again, safe in your driveway, bodies still entwined but never breaking. No incessant honking forcing you apart, no one-way flight waiting to take you away.
It doesn't have to end.
He jolts awake, the stand-up fan beside his bed cooling his clammy skin and making him shiver involuntarily.
Fuck it, he decides then.
He grabs the phone off the nightstand and makes a call.
Please be awake, please be awake, please be awake -
"'Lo?" Tommy's voice comes through the other end, gooey with sleep and laced with mild concern. Joel checks the time on his alarm clock - 2 a.m.
"Tommy, do I ask you for anything, ever?"
"Uh...no?"
Stupid, stupid, stupid, this is the stupidest thing you've ever fucking done -
"Can you watch Sarah for a few days?"
"Uh...why?"
"I'm goin' to California."
-
You took a call then you ran all day That clock goin' 110 I never said I'd get you back again Said "I ain't got time to make no mistakes" "Ain't got time to waste my brakes"
END.

"Luffy... help me..."
It's often been said about One Piece that you should "read it until Arlong Park," but it's one very specific MOMENT in Arlong Park that's important here. If this resonates with you, you're a One Piece fan, and if it doesn't, well, maybe it's not for you.
Let me tell you about it.
TRANSCRIPT:
Which are the best panels in One Piece?
It's often said in the One Piece community that you should stick with it until Arlong Park, and if you're not into One Piece by that point, THAT's when you know it's not a series for you.
I think this is true, and the reason why is this scene. This scene is how you know.
Nami has spent eight years working on her own, since she was a child of only ten, lying, deceiving, stealing, fighting and scamming, all to gather the money that Arlong wants so she can save her village. And now with the goal in sight, Arlong uses the Navy (all Marines are bastards) to steal her money so he can keep exploiting her.
The villagers she has been protecting have had enough, and are going to throw themselves at the fishmen and die, and the beloved friends she made on the Straw Hat Crew keep refusing to leave even though she KNOWS that Arlong will kill them. Her every ray of hope and all of her attempts at keeping control have failed and now, reduced to incoherent rage and sorrow, she sits in the dirt stabbing a dagger into the tattoo on her shoulder, because hurting herself is the only thing she can do to spite Arlong.
And then Luffy comes along and stops her.
She yells at him, throws dirt at him, rejects him, tells him to f*** off basically, and when he doesn't… because she has nothing else left, because there's no plan, because everything is falling down around her, she finally lets down her walls, and says what's in her heart. "Luffy… help me." (p 200, first panel)
And Luffy takes off his hat, his treasure, and gives it to her, and walks forward, and with his characteristic cartoony ridiculousness screams as loud he possibly can "OF COURSE I WILL."
Luffy doesn't know why she needs him. He doesn't know why she lied, why she stole the ship, he doesn't know about Belle-Mère or Nojiko or Nami's deal with Arlong. And he doesn't need to know, because she's his friend and she's his crew, and he loves her, she doesn't need a tragic backstory to deserve his help, she deserves it because she needs it, she deserves it because she asked.
Luffy knows that every time Nami tried to push him away, every time she told him to fuck off and leave her, her heart wasn't in it. Just like he'll know it with Robin, just like he'll know it with Sanji. And he knows that when she asks him for help, she has never meant anything more deeply in her life.
For that, he will move mountains. For that, he will level fortresses, he will smite gods and he will slay dragons. For love does Luffy do these things.
People hype up the moment when the crew get together and go to Arlong Park as the best moment of this chapter, and I'm not gonna say that it isn't awesome. Badass as hell, absolutely certified.
But… this chapter belongs to Nami, and her moment right here, because this is the moment that a girl who has fought so hard and so alone for so long finally finds the strength and the courage that it takes to trust someone else to lift your burdens.

READER’S POV
my hands shook as i held the letter that determined whether or not i’d have a chance at landing a job in screenwriting or directing, or literally anything the film industry would give me. landing a spot in this course, was extremely tough. it was only open to twenty five students, and there were thousands of applicants to rifle through each semester. it was a prestigious course, and if you excelled in it, the professor would consider sending out a letter of recommendation to any companies he knew were offering an internship. it was such high demand because the professor had a lot of sway when it came to massive filming and production companies, and would often land one of his students their big break.
but in order to apply, at least three years of training under some sort of local theatre was mandatory, the applicants needed to prove that they understood how screenwriting, production, and set or stage management worked, and there was still more that we needed to cover but those were top three areas of experience this course looked at. each applicant needed to prove that they were completely fit for this course and that they genuinely wanted to pursue a career in this field, and if you didn’t show it well enough, you weren’t even added to the consideration list.
it was a tough spot to land, and i would give anything to land a spot in this course. i had fought tooth and nail throughout all of high school to get grades that proved determination and hard work, the only university i ever had in mind was harvard, and if i didn’t get in, i wouldn’t know what to do with my life.
so here i was, freshly twenty-one, and finally holding the letter that led to the rest of my life, good or bad.
“come on you pussy, open it already.” jocelyn groans, she had been my rock throughout the entire application process. she’s been my best friend since we were six and bonded over having the same pencil case when she moved to boston in first grade. however, she’s been a bit callous to the idea of me being nervous about reading this letter. she was the type that barely scraped in high school, and she had decided pretty early that she didn’t want to go to any college or university. she excelled online and had amounted a huge following.
“joce, i love you but please shut up. this is the most important letter i’ve held in my entire life. i’m scared, what if i don’t get in?”
“please bitch, you’ve worked harder than anyone i know, i’m sure you’re going to get in.”
“thanks joce, but i genuinely don’t trust your judgement after the last guy you hooked up with. so i am going to take a shot and then open it.” i laugh, walking over to the cupboard above the fridge, grabbing the bottle of tequila we had bought in preparation for this very moment. i also grabbed two shot glasses from the mini bar-cart we had beside the fridge of our shared apartment, and began pouring a shot for the both of us.
“oh my fucking god. oh my fucking god!” she gasps from behind me, making quickly turn around, only to see that she held the open letter in her hands.
“what?”
“you fucking got in!” she exclaims, causing goosebumps to rise along my skin as i stand and watch her eyes dart back and forth along the page, reading the words aloud.
“dear miss l/n, i am pleased to inform you that the committee on Film and Visual Studies has voted to offer you a place in the Harvard class of 2025. dude you did it!” she beams, her voice full of pride and excitement, causing tears to well along my waterline as i stare at her.
“oh my fucking god, i did it.” i sob, feeling genuinely accomplished for the first time in my life.
“however it does say that the only available dorm situation is co-ed, since you had applied for on-campus living.”
“that’s fine with me honestly.” i shrug, wiping the tears, unable to rid my face of the smile that resides on it.
“alright, let’s take some shots and then start packing the rest of your shit. i can’t believe i’ll be living without for so long, i can finally walk around naked.” she hums, wrapping her arms around my shoulders as i sigh, my arms winding tightly around her waist.
i let out a loud laugh as i grab the bottle of tequila, followed by the two full shot glasses, sliding jocelyn hers as i stare at her.
“you’re acting as if you don’t already do that.”
“touché, however, here’s to my bitch starting her dream career.”
the next few days blew by in a blur as jocelyn and i finished packing everything i wanted to take. she was going to help take my stuff from boston to cambridge. the eight hour drive was going to be brutal, but it was completely doable, especially know that she’d be along the way. instead of driving sixteen hours total, she was going to spend the first night with me, she also wanted to scope out my dorm mate to make sure they’re not a total freak.
“i can’t believe i leave tomorrow.” i sigh, resting my head on jocelyn’s shoulder, the two of sitting on our balcony while she puffed her joint. jocelyn stifles a laugh before straightening out her expression, and turning to me.
“your mom would be so proud of you.” she says, her face blank as the absurd comment leaves her mouth.
“as fucking if.” i snort, rolling my eyes, taking the joint from her fingers, taking a small hit as she laughs.
“she’d probably ask why it took so long to get a response and then tell you that you didn’t try hard enough and that your acceptance letter was a pity letter.”
“probably.” i whisper, handing the joint back to her as i watch the setting sun, feeling a strong tinge of hurt swelling in my chest at the mention of my mom.
her and i never really had a steady relationship, when i was younger she was never really around, she was a big part of the film industry, quite the requested screenwriter, and was always in high demand which meant she didn’t take time to nurture me.
when she was alive and around more during my high school days after she was forced to retire from the spotlight due to her cancer, she was constantly berating me, the high ninety grades and constant participation in local theatre was never good enough. she always said i wasn’t shooting high enough. but she fell deathly ill my senior year, and that was a rough patch for us. i had snapped and told her that i hope she regrets the way she’s treated my entire life, and that i won’t be found at her deathbed. but when that time came, i was the first one to hold her hand and tell her i love her, but the reply never came from her, she just stared at the wall blankly until her boyfriend showed up and then suddenly she was lively as she could be while dying.
but i’ve moved on from that year, and it took a long time and shit ton of therapy to realize that i was never going to be the daughter she wanted, but my dad and my step-mother, melissa, have been as supportive as they could. they’ve been with melissa’s mom in maine for the last two months, helping her with everything after her husband’s passing.
i sigh again as i look at jocelyn, leaning my head back on her shoulder.
“we should probably head back to bed, we’ve got a long ass drive tomorrow.”
“yeah, wanna eat some ice cream first?”
“sure.”
after our ice cream, we finally crashed, both of us only getting about four hours of sleep after having to wake up at nearly six in the morning. we quickly got dressed, and grabbing the last few bags and boxes that needed to be packed into the car before leaving to grab food and drinks. after that, we finally started on our way to cambridge.
the drive was full of numerous stops, causing to get at the dorms around four in the afternoon.
“alright you stay with the cars while i go to the admissions centre and grab my key and i’ll go unlock the door and then we can start.” i hum in joce’s direction through her open window, grabbing my bag off the front passenger’s seat while jocelyn nods, climbing out, and stretching.
“i hope you get a hot roommate, you need a boyfriend.” she calls out, rolling my eyes, and flipping her off.
“i’m walking away i cant hear you!” i call back, following the signs that direct me toward to admissions office, as i enter i nervously approach the lady at the front.
“hi i’m here to pick up my dorm keys, room 496, y/n l/n.”
“here you go! so you’ll want to turn right, then take two lefts and follow the numbered plaques on the wall to the co-ed section of the dorms! and lastly, welcome to harvard!” the older woman chirps, flashing a warm smile that eases my nerves just the tiniest bit as i begin following the directions that she had called out.
as i reach my door, i fish the key from my pocket, quickly shoving it into the keyhole, wanting to get into my dorm as quick as possible. as i’m about to turn the knob, someone clear their throat from behind me, causing me to turn around. and once i meet the eyes of the person standing behind me, i immediately wish that the ground would open up and swallow him whole.
“what the fuck are you doing here?”
“this is my dorm?” he coughs, making my skin crawl at the idea of sharing a dorm for a year with the one person that i genuinely wish didn’t exist in my life.
“there’s no way in hell i’m sharing a dorm with you, matt.”

I never wanted anyone else but my gorgeous girlfriend, ever, with her I had it all. The looks, the brains, the sex, the image. She wanted to go to that frosted wasteland, that was not even ranking in the first three universities, so I convinced her to go in the right direction, it was good of me, not bad, it was what she had to do, to become the best version of herself, the one who was perfect to become the wife of a politician. She was perfect for the imagine of a wholesome family, the one I was going to give to her.
I was Jahaerys, she was my Alyssane
I had her, she was here with me, in Dragonstone, we were set for forever, I put a ring around her finger, a promise ring, I had my mother’s blessing, my father’s too, her godmother was a powerful friend of the family who gave money for my father and his career
So what if I enjoyed a bit of female’s attention? So what if now I realize, that, under the right setting, under the proper social circle, I was the most interesting and sought after man in the entire school?
What if I wanted to test how far I could take it?
Fucking a professor was like a badge of honor amongst guys, at least, that is what Criston Cole told me around campus, that if I managed to pull it off I could be some sort of God, I was just, reaffirming what I already knew
That I belonged at the top of the food chain, in Dragonstone University
And my girlfriend didn’t have to know, she was already here by my side, with my friends, my school, dependent on me…
If you think about it, all men go through it, the younger version, the older one, this is just like that, a rite of passage
Sadly, you did not see things as I did, you didn’t see the bigger picture, the future of us together, having a successful career, after letting out steam in our younger years, I thought you were going to be the Cyresse to me Maegor, there through everything, but no…
Your shortsightedness was very illuminating for me
You did not see things so far into the future, and that was probably my fault for not train you properly for that, for what was expected of me, and now you for being my girlfriend, the picture my parents and even grandfather had painted for me and I was so eager to fulfill. The perfect roll.
My oldest sister was a disappointment, my brother Aegon was a disappointment, Helaena was… barely there
It fell on me
To be the perfect son
And I was gladly going to take that roll
Because I could…
I was going to finish my degree in politics and diplomacy, I was going to marry my powerfull girlfriend, and I was going to give myself to public service and life, following a political career, it was all laid out for me…
But this was just fucking great
As I watch her walking away from me in the dorm’s hallway, I knew something was going to be different
This wasn’t like other times, when we fought… no, it has to be, she needed time to cool off, the anger needed to dissipate, and when she weighs in the pros and cons, like she always did, she was going to achieve the conclusion that suited me, that she had to forgive me, there was too much to loose for her. Nothing had to change, not a single part of my plans
What is a politician's life without a bit of scandal?
Now I have other things to take care off
My steps are sharp and decisive, no matter how fucked up things look like, I have to keep my composure
I know that at this time of day, she must be cleaning her art supplies after her sophomore’s class… And there is exactly where she was, with her back turned to me
“I want a paternity test”, is the first thing I say once I check quickly for undesired ears. She turned around and she looks shocked
“She told you? really? I was hoping to tell you tonight, I… had something planned, I gave her class an entire research about…”
“Before we do anything, I want a paternity test”, I repeat, no, this cannot happen to me,
“I’m only like eight weeks”, she said, her hand on her lower belly
“I will wait”, she frowned, which by now, I have never seen her do, frown lines were not something that she had on her face
“What happened?”, she asked, suddenly angry
“She knows”
“I know that”, she said
“And it never crossed your mind giving me a heads up? she had known for a week!”, I growled
“She pulled her threatricks today in my class, and I found out she knew”, she whined back, “but why does it matter?”, she kept asking, “you are finally free”
“For what?”, I ask, “to be with you?”, she looked like I slapped her, my sharp and disgusted tone gave that effect
“I thought that’s what we were doing”, she said, fixing her hair, trying to keep her composure, “being… together…”
“How do I know I was the only one you were fucking?”, I asked point blank, and she moved her hand quickly, I turn my face as her finger collided with my cheek, the sting came after
“I thought what we had was special”, she whined, tears in her eyes
“That I was going to drop everything for this?”, I asked bitterly
“I can be what you need”, she purred, I chuckled darkly
“like I said, I want a paternity test”
“Is yours!”, she fought
“I need it in writing”, I say back
“Why don’t you believe me!?”, she was losing it
“Because I barely know you, and you said, you were taking care of yourself, and clearly you aren’t”
“No birth control is 100% effective”, she bit
“If the child is mine, the money won’t be a problem”, I said formally
“The money?”, she said back, “what about you?”
“I’m a Targaryen, I cannot be involved in this”, I only muttered, and I left the room
I had finals, I couldn’t be bothered, I had a plan and…
Fuck fuck fuck
The words in front of me, in my book, about the Valyrian republic started playing in my mind, dancing across the page, and suddenly I Was re-reading for the third time the same page because i couldn’t process the words
This is ridiculous
The plain page mocking me, the huge amount of information right then in front of me…
Fuck
Where are those stupid study cards?
Flashcards, I searched for them in my suitcase and once I found them, with your lettering, and colors for me to learn by chapter, one color a different chapter…
But these were old, for the midterms, not for the finals…
FUCK
How hard could it be?, I started rereading, and summarizing, and after four hours and the librarian kicking me out of the library, I had nothing
A day wasted
How the fuck did I became so codependant in a studybody? even if that studybody was you?
The final was tomorrow, and I barely scraped two chapters of the four
This was going to be a long night
Not even Cole could pull me off of this
The next day, after I barely slept I barely kept myself awake to give the damn test
I was obviously going to pass, but… I was not so sure about the excellency grade on this one
I’m so fucking pissed.
How could you abandon me at a time like this?
So selfish and short sighted
I slip one time, once! and this is how you are supposed to support me? be by my side?
Two days had passed and no news from her, anything, she had left her ring on my nightstand front he last time we fucked, and she won’t even text me to get it back, and that was worrying…
So, deciding I should be the bigger person and apologize so we can leave all of this nightmare behind us, I went to look for her…
Alys’ baby wasn’t mine, I knew so, I heard about this sort of thing all the time, I was not going to fall on this, she was trying to babytrap me, and I was not going to let that happen.
And you? you were punishing me, it's alright, I can take it, soon you will be back in my arms, and our lives together were going to be back on track
This was just a slump on the road, and you both should be thankful that happened so early on, so you could control it, and make it disappear in the rearview mirror
And that is why, when I knocked on your dorm room, I found it strange that your name had been erased from the small white board on the door, and then Maris opened, and when she saw me, her eyes lit up, and her mouth shaped to a sick grin
“Aemond”, she greeted
“Maris”, I said shortly, “is (y/n) here?”, and her smile only got wider
“She told you the other day! she left”
“What?”, I asked
“Yes, she left!”, she opened the door and took a step away for me to look into the room, and her entire side was empty, completely gone, she, was gone, even her bed, Maris had already invaded your side
“Where is she?”, i ask, feeling all blood leaving my face
“A nice, older lady came one day and helped her put everything in boxes, and in a couple of hours…”
“Fuck!”, I slammed the door no my way out and I cursed the day that nosey Cerenna decided to finally meddle in your life
She was a poor influence on you, she has always had been
I grab my phone and dialed your number, number five on speed dial
It didn’t even ring.. did you?
No
I looked up the texting app and…
No photo
I send a text…
And… no double tick
No… no, no, no, no
Instagram?
Couldn’t find you
No
No, you were just punishing me, you were going to come back, you always did
Maybe you got scared, and Cerenna came and picked you up, but you were not leaving, not permanently, you were coming back
You were
So I wrote the first email
But it rebounded
Even email, uh?
So I created a new email address, and I wrote the first one
No big deal
I had other finals to get to
And giving you time to cool down was the best idea.
So I did my best
The amnio test I had to make Alys take was in about one more month, according to her… so nothing I could do until then, until after Winter Break
I just had to keep it together, nothing had a turning point, I still didn’t hit the point of no return, I knew it
Fuck Fuck
The semester was over, and I didn’t even want to join the celebrations of my classmates, or with Cole, who knew the dirty details of the lowest parts of Dragonstone, the whole city
But I didn’t have it in me
In fact, every desire I still held to celebrate the successful first semester of university was killed when I received word from my father, that we were all supposed to spend holidays together in King’s Landing… and all of us ment
Fucking Rhaenyra and all her family
The liberals, the underdogs, the pariahs
It was going to be interesting
As soon as I arrived, the questioned was asked
“Where is she?”
As always you were expected to spend the holidays with us, and now, not even I had an answer for your whereabouts
“She is spending it with Cerenna”
“But they live in King’s Landing dear, didn’t you invite them? I’ll have to call them”, muttered my mother.
I looked at her intensely as she dialed the number, but it rang and rang, and nothing
No one answered
“That is strange”
“Cerenna mentioned she wanted to take her to a small vacation, you know they both aren’t as festive”
“But dear, is the week before the elections!”, she said urgently
“I know”
It was expected of me to take you back into the fold
So I did as the men before had done, before cell phones existed
I went to your house
But it was empty, and no, I’m running errands empty
Empty empty as we will not be coming back anytime soon
We all lived in the same neighborhood, at the top of Rhaenys’ hill, a very exclusive palace
And then when I first started to think, you were not going to be so forgiving
At least, not as easy
If you had been with another man, I would have been difficult to forgive you, I would have make you work hard for my forgiveness, it was alright, I was going to put up the work
When I came back to my father’s house, I came face to face with Jacaerys
“Jace”, I greet shortly
“Uncle”
“How is that frozen wasteland?”, I asked
“How is that sticking up your ass they put you in Dragonstone?”
“Feels great”, i mutter
“So as freezing my ass off”, he answered
That little shit, that because he had other beliefs and wants to fight for survival in his university he believes he is better than me
Tonight the festival in the commemorations of Azor Ahai, the princess that was promised was commencing and it was going to be a whole week long, it was indeed going to be a long weekend, celebrating the coming of our savior, who saved us from eternal winter.
As my mother was performing her prayers, a phone dinged you opened your eyes to look at Jace, who took only one look at his screen and his face lit up, and then looked straight at me, with a mocking grin on his face
He had asked about you
I told him you were taking the holidays to be with your godmother
But something in his smiled and his mocking eyes
That little shit knew something
“Where is (y/n)?”, he asked out loud, I growled
“I told you, she is in vacations with Cerenna”
“I don’t think she is”
“This is hardly appropriate”, mocked Alicent
“But concerning”, said Daemon, who presence here I still don’t understand, “elections are next week, and the Lannisters are not in town”
“How do you know?”, I ask
“Oh I know”, he mocked, Laena, hsi wife, smiled shyly, mockingly
Where they all in on it
“What does it mean?”, asked Viserys, recently catching up
“It means that neither Aemond’s girlfriend, nor her billionaire sympathizer godmother, nor her family of billionaires and politics financiers are here for election week, and i’m guessing, the reason for their absence has something to do with the fact that your son, has no fucking idea of where her girlfriend is”
“Meaning?”, he asked again
“Iluminate us Aemondd, where is your girlfriend?”
“On travels”, I said
“On holidays? on election week?”, asked Daemon
“Yes”
“Aemond..”, whispered Alicent, “what did you do?”
“Nothing”, I growled
“You did something”, muttered Jace
“You know where she is”, i say angrily
“I know where she is going to be”, he mocked
“What does that mean?”, asked Alicent. I couldn’t take it anymore
You left Dragonstone, you canceled your enrollment, you finished your tuition. You told me you were going North and I didn’t want to believe it
“She left Dragonstone”, i say, “she met a guy from Winterfell University, and she left me, and Dragonstone”
“What?”
Rhaenyra had been oddly quiet, only looking at everyone, but now, she couldn’t hide her triumphant smirk in her cup of whine
“She left you?”, asked Alicent, horrified, “how could she do that?”
“The better question would be, what did you do baby brother?”, teased Aegon
“She left me”, i defended
“She wouldn’t do that without reason”, muttered Helaena, that, didn’t even seemed she was paying attention to the conversation
“What did you do Grandson?”, asked Otto HIghtower
“I told you, she left me”
“And she managed to convince the Lannisters to go with her? I don’t believe that!”, he said, raising his voice, Daemon laughed, drinking wine
What a great fucking dinner
“I’m sure there is an explanation for this!”, said Alicent
“She left with a guy named Ben”, I defended
“You know what? it doesn’t surprise me, she always looked like a problematic, wanton little tart”, the sound of a cup breaking in millions of tiny pieces made everyone fell quiet as Rhaenyra had crushed the damn thing with her bare hand
“Don’t you dare speak about her like that”, she growled. My mother only chuckled darkly, “she is the daughter of one of my best friends, and my son’s youth companion”
“Takes one to know one”, and that is when Jacaerys stood up
“If she left Dragonstone to follow her dreams clearly Aemond pushed her to do it, I know for sure the Lannisters wouldn’t get involved in all of this if the matter wasn’t serious”
“Jace”, called Viserys
“Call Tyland and ask him why he is not here”, hee demanded, “call him grandfather”
Viserys picked up the phone, and called his political ally, it ranged twice, and then it sounded like Tyland had hang up on him
“What did you do to my friend?:, asked Jace
“You haven’t spoken in years!”, I defended, “what do you know?”
“Enough!”, called Alicent, “we are in holidays”
The appetites were pretty much sated after that
I tried to speak to Jacaerys in the days that followed, but he wouldn’t tell me anything
Than the primaries came, and the Lannisters were a no show
And my father lost the primaries
Fuck
FUCK
And when I thought things couldn’t be any better
I was summoned into my father’s office, and when I entered, my parents, and my grandfather Otto were there
“What’s the matter?”, I ask
“Aemond, why did I receive an email about a Professor called Alys Rivers, saying she is expecting your child?”
FUCK FUCK FUCK
My phone ranged in my pocket, a text from Alys, a picture, a picture of us, fucking, a Terminantion letter..
All, in one day
“So now we know why we lost all the founding and costs us the elections!”, growled my Grandfather
It was the most humiliating afternoon of my life
Alys fired
A picture circulating Dragonstone University
Alys taking me down with her
an email from the Dean asking me to meet her as soon as the vacations are over
And you? never to be seen
Alys claims you took and send the picture around
You had received all my angry emails, at least they didn’t bounce, but still, no answer
Daemon, and now Jace knew where you were and yet, they wouldn’t tell me
My mother lost a chunk of her hair in the reunion where they were berating me. Viserys stood awfully quiet, looking at the table in front of him, clearly calculating how much this was going to cost him.
And Otto was calling lawyers to prepare for the meeting with the Dean
The freedom I had, the reliance I enjoyed from my family, the trust they had in me, the respect, everything was destroyed.
Now, I was no better than my brother who tried to study multiple careers and couldn’t finish one, the one who had multiple ladies and scandals with sex workers, I was no better than him, my mistake had been more permanent, more public, and that, in the world of politics, was unforgivable
And yet
And yet
I needed to find you
It wasn’t even later, after I had my grandfather threaten the Dean with letting me continue my studies or else, even after the time was up and I told Alys to take the test
She tried to tell me she had already taken it, that she had found a lock of my hair…
But I made her repeat it, so I went to the doctor with her.
And while I waited for the results, I started to think, to meditate
Maybe I could turn this around
Maybe, if the kid was mine, I could get married. Alys was exquisite, in looks at least, she was enticing, had something about her, I could train her, to dance to the politics’ song.
You could do it, make all of this worth it. The Lannisters were back, clearly just wanted to give us a scare, they will never support the Liberals, they were just taking a warning shot, perhaps…
Perhaps this could work
My father had a team, a PR team dedicated to this sort of thing, to spin things to make them look great, to gain advantage from the worst of points
Yes, if the baby was mine, I could spin this around.
And then the results came
NEGATIVE
What a surprise… a gold digger tried to baby trapped me and she didn’t even do it right
She accused me to my mother of fathering a lie…
And now…
FUCK!
If you had never found out, if Alys haven't told my mother
But you did, she did, you blew up everything, she also, and now… I had nothing…
As I stared at the results on that paper
“I never want to see you again”, I say to the woman in front of me
“The test was wrong!!”, she cried
“You tried to baby trapped me, you accused me to my mother”, I growled
“You have to understand”
“If I see you again I’m going to make sure you never get another job teaching”, I threatened, and in tears, she left the apartment I had rented
My respect from my family was gone
My flawless record in my elite university was gone
My reputation was tainted
You were gone
Since the second I lost you, I continued to lose everything else…
No…

Younger Gods: I

Younger Gods Master List Dream x fem!reader (unnamed)
Dream is protective of his ravens after Jessamy, and he's still bad at listening. The reader finds this out the hard way.
Warnings: extremely mild gore/injury to animal, language, Dream is his own warning
A/N: Playing a little fast and loose with dream physics, but we're just here for a good time, right? I read the comics an age ago, and thought I might as well pop back into the fandom for a quick swim after falling in love all over again via Netflix. Aiming for 5 chapters, but we'll see where this takes us.
*Remember, to like is kind but to comment/repost is divine.

Chapter 1: Just don't bite me
“How did you get here?”
She stared at the injured raven hopping across her garden like it might open its beak and speak. Give her some answers. It’s eye fixed on her, pinning her even as it fought gravity and pain, flapping with a wing bent the wrong way.
Glossy black feathers hid the blood it left on the long grass. If it didn’t move like something hurt, didn’t struggle to hold up its broken wing, she’d never guess it had crashed into her little world by accident. Which brought her back to the question.
It fluffed the feathers around its neck in an attempt to look bigger, croaking as it shuffled farther away. Soft thunder purred in the clouds, and the steady rain dripped from the tip of the raven’s beak. She held up her hands. Sank low on her heels, as near to the raven’s level as she could reach without falling flat on her belly. If that’s what it took to earn its trust, though, she’d get a little muddy.
For all that it was uninvited, the bird was her guest now, and if she didn’t take care of it, it could never leave. Maybe it would haunt her. Maybe she’d just feel guilty as hell.
“You’re hurt.”
The raven twitched, its head tilting three different ways, studying her expression from varied angles, like it would reveal malicious intent in the right light. He could look all he wanted, but she needed to get him out of the rain.
She started unwinding the thick, knit scar from around her neck, speaking low in an effort to keep the bird calm. “I have something that can help. It’s just a salve, but you’ll heal much faster, and I’m sure you’d like to be on your way as soon as possible. But I’m going to take you inside first, so you can get warm and dry. The rain never really stops.”
Prepared with the folded cloth, she crept forward a few steps, giving the bird time to move away. When it didn’t, she closed the distance and muttered, “Just don’t bite me, okay?”
“No promises, witch,” the raven said.
Her hands stilled an inch away from his feathers. So, he was magic. Magic and rude as fuck.
She spluttered, “I’m not a witch.”
“Yeah?” The raven looked up at the clouds and down at her cottage. “Well, this place is weird. And so are you.”
“It was the best I could do.” She carefully wrapped the scarf around him, mindful of the bad wing – and the beak. “Sorry it doesn’t live up to your standards.”
Her first guest, and all he could do was insult all her hard work. He scoffed but held still in his swaddling as she pulled up to her chest and tramped back inside.
It wasn’t her fault it rained all time. Well, technically it was, actually, but she liked it. The water looked beautiful running down the windows, and the cozy fire glowed bright enough to warm a soul when the trees rustled in the wind. With rain hushing over the roof and a whisper of distant thunder to keep her company, she never felt lonely.
Tasteless corvid.
She set him down by the fireplace while she chose a good blanket to craft a makeshift nest. Only when she’d stripped off the scarf and moved him to the softer resting place did she tug off her own drenched sweater, shivering until she found a good replacement. Her wet hair clung to her neck as she pulled a sweater three sizes too big over her head. The sleeves dangled past her fingers, and she shoved them up past her elbows in thoughtless habit.
The bird hadn’t taken his eyes off her, but he still mustered enough faith to thank her. Sort of.
“This is… nice.”
It sounded like an olive branch, so she took it as one. The one room cottage was her haven. Even if it looked small and worn, she found it warm and soft, kind in the way a home ought to be.
“I like to think so.”
She moved to the workbench under the window that looked out to the garden, where she’d been sitting when the raven dropped out of the clouds with an all too human cry. Her fingertips ghosted over herbs and pots and potions as she looked for the little vial she wanted. She only finished it a week ago. It would take three months to make another. But that was alright. No one else really needed it.
When she knelt beside the bird, vial open and ready to drip over his injuries, he clacked his beak at her.
“Not a witch, huh?”
The wing felt so fragile in her hand. She couldn’t let him distract her. “My mother was. I’m… weird.”
“You can say that again.”
“This might hurt.”
“What do you -?” He broke off in a sharp caw, instinctively jerking away as she pulled his bones straight.
“Sorry, sorry. The worst is over now, I promise.”
He had a wonderfully colorful vocabulary for a raven, and he shouted a few rainbows while she wrapped his wing in the best position to heal. The white gauze practically glowed against his onyx plumage, and he looked just a little more pitiable.
“Sorry,” she repeated.
The bird shook himself, stretching and folding his good wing three times to push away the pain.
“Son of a bitch,” he hissed. “Fucking damn. Teach me to pay attention. Kids and their fucking rocks.” He’d been staring into the fire as he recovered his equilibrium, but once he could pause his cursing, the bird looked back at his host.
“Name’s Matthew. What do I call you, weird girl who isn’t a witch?”
She shrugged. “Whatever you like.”
“I was asking for your name, lady.”
“I don’t have one I can give you.”
“That’s not helpful.” He looked around the room, probably on the hunt for something to critique, and although his beak opened, it snapped shut again when he looked back over his shoulder. He stared at her in the firelight, but not at her face. “What happened to your neck, lady?”
Her hand flew up to cover the scars, a landscape of smooth, raised, and sunken marks ringing her throat. She’d forgotten when she took off the scarf. Horror and humiliation twisted in her stomach, and she was wildly aware of being ugly and vulnerable in the same breath. Instead of answering, she rushed back to her closet, pulling out an even longer knit piece than the one she’d wrapped the bird – Matthew – in outside.
He picked up on the subtext, deflating a little and pointedly changing the subject.
“How long will this magic potion of yours take? I need to get back to the Dreaming. My boss is waiting for me.”
The scarf’s tail dropped from numb fingers, one loop short of her goal, left to trail on the ground as she wondered how the fuck her day could get any worse.
“The Dreaming?”
“Yeah. Know of many other realms with talking ravens, lady?”
“No,” she admitted, cursing herself in the privacy of her own thoughts. “It will take a couple days for you to fly again, I think.”
“That’s no good.” Matthew pecked at his bandages, and she rushed over.
“Stop that. You’ll make it worse.”
“Can’t fly with this,” he said, mouth full of gauze.
“You can’t fly without them, either,” she said gently.
Giving up with an enormous sigh, the raven wriggled down into the blanket and glowered through the window at the continuous rain. A little bolt of lighting reflected in his gleaming eye, like an idea sparking to life.
“Your weird little house is pretty close, you know,” he said. “To the Dreaming, I mean. I bet you could walk there.”
“It takes a day to walk in or out.”
“Why?”
“Because I made it that way.”
“Oh, you’re definitely weird.” He paused, like he was finally noticing the blanket nest and the empty vial glittering by the warm flames. When he spoke again, he sounded the slightest bit contrite. “Weird but nice. And I still need your help.”
“I don’t want to go to the Dreaming, Matthew.” She couldn’t bring her voice to carry more than a whisper. She was so afraid of her dreams she didn’t even sleep anymore. Not much. Walking into the fertile fields of the Dream Lord’s imagination…
“You don’t have to go in,” the raven insisted. “Just get me to the gates and I’ll be someone else’s problem. I promise.”
She couldn’t answer. She really didn’t dare. The laws of hospitality urged her to pick up the bird and carry him wherever he wanted to go, and he made it all sound so reasonable, so easy. Just a stroll and a hand over to a friendly face eager to welcome him back. It wasn’t, though. Oh, the walk was fine. She came and went from her hideaway world all the time, but her heart thrummed in terror to even think of the Dreaming. Was she really so close? Her home didn’t feel as safe as it had that morning. The security of the cozy storm left something wanting now. None of this was designed to keep other entities out. It was just… out of the way. On the other hand, if she left the bird – one of Dream’s ravens! – here to recover and his master came for him, it would never be a sanctuary ever again.
Maybe… if she was quick…
“I’ll –” Her voice broke. She cleared her throat and tried again. “I’ll try. I’ll walk you to the gates.”
“Thank you.” At least he sounded like he meant it. Lack of gratitude wouldn’t change her mind at this point, but she appreciated it. Walking twelve hours with a rude bird muttering under his breath didn’t sound like the fun kind of adventure.
None of this sounded like the fun kind of adventure.
Fun adventures involved late night diners and questionable life choices after two bottles of wine.
“My master needs me,” Matthew said, like he still needed to prove his point.
That was fine. That was great. Dream would be missing his raven soon. She was tempted to take a faster mode of travel, but she wasn’t sure what that would do to the raven, so she hurried to gather everything she’d need for the walk instead. Tall rainboots, a hooded jacket, and two shawls. She wrapped one around Matthew to keep him warm and tied the other around herself like a sling. With the bird nestled close to her natural warmth, she charged back into the rain. She didn’t even take the time to bank the fire.
Matthew, apparently, decided her rush was entirely for his benefit. “Thanks for this. I mean it.”
She paused at the edge of the garden, standing in the gap in the stone wall as she studied the horizon, looking for something to tell her where to go.
“Which way to the Dreaming?”
Matthew fidgeted and jerked his beak at a random point. “There. I can’t see it, but I can feel it, you know?”
She didn’t know or she wouldn’t have asked, but her breath was better saved for walking. Nearly running, she sped through the emerald green grass and low white flowers in the verdant moss. She didn’t look. Didn’t appreciate. Didn’t stop to touch, or pick, or smell. If she had the stamina to run the twelve hours, she would.
Pattering rain sounded louder inside her hood, and the sky broiled with clouds promising a real storm.
Maybe he could hear her heart pounding by his ear, or he finally realized she was moving awfully quickly for someone who didn’t want to go on this trip in the first place. Whatever his inspiration, Matthew dragged their conversation back from the dead to persuade her she’d made the right choice as she forded a narrow stream.
“You don’t have to be afraid of Dream,” he said. “If he’s upset, it will be with me. You’re doing me a favor.” He paused, struck by a new through that almost immediately spewed out his beak. “You’re not old enemies or something, are you?”
“No. I’ve never met him. I’d rather not meet him today.”
Matthew croaked. “Why not?”
Sometimes the truth was the simplest path to peace, and she’d like the bird to shut up for a while. “I have bad dreams. I don’t want to get any closer to them. Thanks.”
“You know, he could do something about that.”
“I don’t like favors.”
“But I’d argue he owes you one.”
“I’d argue that I don’t care.”
More croaking, this time accompanied by rustling from his safely bound wings. She remembered ravens were in the business of knowing things, watching and listening until they could deliver a secret whole and unbroken to their master. Her cagey replies must bother him on some deeper level.
“So why are you doing this? You clearly don’t want to.”
“Because you were hurt. You needed help. And I don’t want your master to come looking for you here.”
He cast incredible side-eye for a creature wrapped in home-knit outerwear strapped to a stranger’s chest.
But at least he shut-up.
It was the perfect landscape for long walks. She’d designed it that way. Gently rolling hills melted into copses of trees just too small to be forests but deep enough to lose the daylight below the tangled canopy. Any other day, she’d enjoy this trek. But now she wondered if she’d ever be able to enjoy it again, knowing which direction the Dreaming lay and how close it pressed to her border.
She slogged up the hills and slipped down the muddy sides, careful not to tumble and crush the fragile bird she carried against her chest. She slipped through the woods, ignoring the sweet smell of old loam and dried leaves. When the heavy rain came down in a curtain as the crested the last hill, she pushed through that, too.
The raven stayed awake for the entire trip. She shaved a full three hours off her usual time, and she reached the end exhausted. She should’ve packed a stimulant. Maybe an energy drink. Maybe a potion. Something. She had to get herself back home after this.
A field stretched to the cusp of oblivion, a black void at the edge of the turf her mind fought not to notice. She walked to the edge, slowing until she came to the brink, and then she had no ideas.
“I don’t see anything.”
“Well, you’re not a raven,” Matthew said. “I see where we need to go. Just trust me. There’s a path a few feet to the left.”
She shuffled obediently to the side, but she still saw nothing.
“Just take a step,” the bird insisted. “I’ll guide you through it.”
She didn’t want to. Every instinct from every element of her pedigree screamed that this was a Bad Idea. Relying on blind faith and a raven’s intuition might lead her into the Dreaming, but she bet she’d have a long fall someone with wings wouldn’t consider a problem. Some little oversight would swallow her whole, and nightmare would eat her alive, or she’d be trapped in her own night terrors.
“Why don’t I just leave you here?” She could hear the panic in her wobbling pitch, and her trembling hands banished any doubt as she reached for the knot in the sling.
“I thought you didn’t want Morpheus to come looking for me in your weird little bubble realm.”
She closed her eyes. Drew a shaky breath. No, she didn’t want that, but would it be worse than voluntarily stepping into that darkness? The raven couldn’t protect her. He wouldn’t even know what was safe for her, really. He was flying on a lot of assumptions, and she didn’t want to pay the price for his optimistic naivety.
“I don’t know what the void will do to me,” she confessed. “I’ve never actually… touched it.”
“It won’t do anything,” the raven said. “And it’s so thin you won’t even notice. The Dreaming is right there.”
Fucking hell. Her hands seized air, opening and closing like she could snatch courage out of thin air. Damn it all.
She lunged into the thing she didn’t even want to look at, and for the barest moment, she felt it. Nothing. No pulse. No breath. No thought or feeling at all. A gap stretched between past and present, like she’d been snuffed out – or never began to exist in the first place.
Then her momentum carried her through in a boggling mess of physics, and she was somewhere again.
Air punched into empty lungs, and she stumbled, nearly falling to her knees as light, sound, and her own heartbeat returned.
“Whoa! Hey! Watch out for the water!”
Matthew’s shout brought her eyes down, and she saw dark waves lapping at her feet, sucking them into the black sand as the foam tried to climb up and over her rain boots. The fact that sea foam was trying to do anything clued her into the water’s threat, and she darted away with her newly-beating heart in her throat.
“Well done. You see? Not so bad. You’re fine.”
It had been one of the worst experiences in her fucked-up life, and she might’ve told him so if she had the breath. Instead, she barely managed to mutter, “I think I hate you.”
“Nah.”
She stopped to push the last of the void from her lungs, sucking in oxygen like she’d never tasted it before, and the sensation stirred several memories she couldn’t take time to stop and fight. Not on the shores of the Dreaming. Not so close to the Lord of Nightmares. She wrestled them down, threw other thoughts and needs over them like a rug over a stain. Her horrors would have to wait until she slept again, and she planned on putting that off for a long, long time.
When she felt ready and able to move again, she asked, “Where to now?”
“The gates,” he said, like he thought she was the stupid creature alive.
She looked away from her feet and finally noticed the looming doors further down the beach. Silently, she had to agree that she was, in fact, incredibly stupid. They were hard to miss, taller than a skyscraper, carved over in faces, beasts, and scenes she didn’t recognize, gleaming like aged ivory. Beautiful and awe-inspiring in the way an angel or the Milky way inspired reverence and respect. Something a little too vast for her to grasp, but towering over her regardless.
Yeah. Time to get this over with.
As she power-walked across the cold sand, shadowed by the rocks piercing out of the waves, she unknotted the sling and pulled Matthew out of his cocoon.
“This bus has come to the end of its route,” she said. “We hope you’ve enjoyed your trip.”
The raven cackled, trying to stretch his wing in spite of the way she still cradled him. “You find a sense of humor in the void?”
“No, just a sense of relief. Seriously. Watch where you’re flying next time. I won’t have another healing salve like a gave you for several months, so if you do this again, you’re fucked.”
“Thanks for the pep talk.” He was all but straining forward in her hands, eager to get home, to complete his mission and reassure his master that all was well. “You sure you don’t want to meet my master? Or Lucienne?”
It didn’t matter she didn’t know who Lucienne was. She didn’t need to meet any more dreams – or servants of dreams. “Very.”
“So, you’re just going to ding-dong-ditch Dream of the Endless?”
“Yup.”
“Suit yourself.”
The sand made it harder to keep her pace, sliding away under her heels, sapping her strength as she hurried to drop her guest off at his front door. Waves of power rolled down from the high wall, and she felt trapped against the tide of Dream’s domain and the dark ocean lapping up the shore behind her. Everything looked grand and stark. She didn’t belong with her green boots and her rain-slicked jacket. The hood had fallen back, and a damp strand decided to stick on her cheek. With her hands full of bird, she had no way to pull it off.
Cold, wet, disheveled.
Tired.
Afraid.
She was ready for this adventure to end.
“How are you going to get back through the void?” the bird asked.
She shook her head, amazed. “You just thought to ask that? Never mind. I have a shortcut.”
“What kind of shortcut? Why did we just walk for nine hours in the rain?”
She plucked at the end of the second shawl, the one she used to keep him warm on that nine-hour trip through the storm. Such gratitude.
“Because I didn’t know what it would do to you.”
“I can survive the void, lady, you think your shortcut’s tougher than that?”
How far away was the damn gate? Would this beach never end?
“All that matters,” she panted, “is that you’re going home. I’m going home.” She turned the bird in her hands so they were eye-to-eye. “And we will never have to see each other again.”
Sounding more human than ever, the bird tutted, but whatever he wanted to say was swallowed in a sudden, sharp wind.
The austere stillness consumed itself in a rage, lifting black sand and sea spray into an impenetrable haze. One second, she could see the gate. The next, she could barely see three feet in front of her. Shielding her eyes from the sand with one arm, she instinctively tucked the bird close, bending over him protectively. The grit gave the wind claws, and it lashed her bare flesh raw.
What have you done with my raven?
The question pressured her from all sides, a crushing, physical weight ringing in her ears as it forced her to cower in on herself. She couldn’t answer. Couldn’t breathe. Matthew squawked and fluttered in her arms, flopping free with half a scarf still wrapped around him, tangled in his claws. “Sir, wait! Sir!”
The raven’s call settled the hurricane, but the overwhelming pressure remained. The lingering effect of the voice pressed against her soul like a death knell as a figure gathered itself, standing between the two travelers and the gate. The raven struggled towards the tall, dark shape, and she all but slapped herself in the face in her fight to get the dust out of her eyes, nose, and mouth.
Matthew called the newcomer sir.
She was peering up at Dream of the Endless.
He knelt to accept the bird, face dark as a nightmare. Long, pale fingers explored the broken wing. When they pulled away, a few rusty crumbs of blood clung to the pads, and eyes burning with angry stars lifted to pierce her.
He asked again, “What have you done with my raven?”
This time the voice was a voice, not a force of nature. He sounded like smoke and sand, deep and sure as the ocean at her back. That voice might scour her away like a rough patch in his perfect Dreaming, and nothing in his tone said she was welcome.
Now she felt like the raven – a little bird with a hoarse cry and hollow bones all too easy to snap.
“You hurt something of mine.” A snarl carved into his face, and even as Matthew squawked for his lord’s attention, the Dream Lord reached out.
His shadow stretched long and dark from his feet, against the light. It crept towards her, darker than the black shore, and she stumbled over her own feet as she backed away, landing hard on her hands.
“I didn’t,” she whispered. Her voice was long gone. It fled and left her to die whimpering and pathetic, the traitor. Scrambling back as the shadow approached, she shook her head. “Please, don’t.”
Cawing and flapping, Matthew shouted, “Sir, stop!”
The shadow slowed, just for an instant, and she leapt to her feet. Tears burning her eyes from fear and grit, she ran three steps back, never daring to take her eyes off the threatening Endless. She clawed into her own mind, grabbing for the half of herself she preferred to leave wandering the sky over her cottage. A rumble drew Dream’s eyes to the dark clouds gathering at the edge of the Dreaming, and she saw his eyes flick back to her just as the lightning struck.
Her summoned bolt traced down to catch her up in a flash of burning light. The crackle was almost unbearable, but desperate times called for desperate measures, and Dream’s shadow was still snaking after her.
She wasn’t there when the shadow reached the place she’d stood. The lightning blast reached through her to the ground and then back up into the clouds. It took her with it.
An echoing strike deposited her in the cottage garden.
She fell to her hands and knees as the power zapped away into the sky. Mud squished up between her fingers, and she shuddered in place, too busy shaking to move. Rain rolled down her face, cleaning the salt of sweat, tears, and sea. Her limbs felt impossibly heavy after weightless, electric travel, and she bowed to the animal urge to just freeze in place for a while. She needed to think. Maybe then she could remember how to stand.
An Endless wanted her dead. Dream, no less. She had more reason than ever to stay awake. Maybe she could find a trick to avoid sleep forever.
But his raven knew where she lived, and it wasn’t a long trip.
She needed to run.

How (Not) to Summon a Demon: Chapter 8
...and so it begins, my dear Readers. So it begins. Pairing: Alastor x fem!Reader Warnings: mentions of abusive, r/p/e, exes being absolute assholes, Alastor ready to kill, threats, stalking
Word Count: 2, 525
The day had gone surprisingly well, despite the horrible way it started. You had spent it with Alastor and Veronica, but mostly Alastor since your roommate decided she wanted to go do other things. Alastor had been a wonderful gentleman, holding doors open for you, letting you hold his arm as you walked. He even had you on his right side, away from the road. He was so old fashion it made you swoon, but you fought off the butterflies and kept a cool head.
Now you sat on the hood of your car, waiting for Veronica who said twenty minutes ago that she was just finishing up at a store and would be on her way. The sun was setting, turning the sky orange and red, little stars starting to shine through overhead. You glance at Alastor who stood by the car, his eyes watchful around the parking lot.
"Sorry she's taking so long," you apologize again, holding your head in your hands as you prop your elbows on you knees.
"It's alright. I'm sure she's just having fun," he says. "I hope you did, as well." You can't fight the large smile as it comes.
"Yeah, I did. Did you?" You watch his face carefully, trying to see if you can read him. It's hard, what with his constant smile. Why was that?
"Indeedy! Might be the most fun I've had since 1933!" You giggle, watching him spread his arms out and swirl his cane. He stops and faces you, dipping low. "Was a pleasure, my dear, thank you."
"Don't thank me," you say, crossing your arms. "Veronica was the one who mentioned it." You initially were going to stay in your room today and worry if your ex was coming to kidnap you. Oh no. Now you were thinking about him. Great. Way to ruin your own mood.
Alastor must notice how your shoulders drop as he steps forward. His body is blocking your view of Bourbon Street and you have to crane your neck to see him properly. Damn, you forgot how tall he is. "Everything alright, darling?" he asks. You note the way his smile is lowered, still there but now with pressed lips, like a frown.
"I'm ok," you lie. You don't want to burden him with your troubles. He's a demon, you're sure he won't care. No matter how much fun you had today, no matter what he says or does, he's only here cause you summoned him. Once you make your wish, he's gone. There's no point in letting your heart melt like it's doing now, no point in gasping when he leans close to you. Why is he so close?
"Darling," he says softly, tilting your chin to make you look up at him again. There's no point falling for him, so why is he making it so hard not to? "If there's anything bothering you, you can tell me. Let me help you." Fuck. Yep. You're screwed. Demon or not, your heart drops like an anchor out in the ocean, falling fast and hard to the sea floor.
"I -"
"There you guys are!" Veronica's voice pulls you back and you lean away from Alastor. You swear you see his brows dip in anger, but it's gone as he straightens up.
"About time you show up," you joke but the smile fades when you see Veronica. Her face is pale, like she's seen a ghost, panting as she catches her breath. Had she been running? "What's wrong?" Veronica looks up at you, clearly worried.
"What does your ex look like again?"
No.
No, no, no.
It can't be.
You feel your body growing cold, your hands shaking. "W-What?"
"It could've been someone else," she backtracks, shaking her head and reaching for your phone. You let her take it, fingers too numb to move. She goes through your photos until she stops on the only recent one you had of your ex. "Oh my god."
Your heart drops again, for a different reason this time. Fear crawls up your spine, wrapping itself around your throat.
Please, it can't be.
"Girlie, we need to leave," Veronica says, trying to hand you your phone back. You don't grab it, you can't move. You're stuck, tears forming.
He's here. He's found you. It's all over.
You hear Veronica shout your name, but it's lost to the rush of wind in your ears. You can't hear anything.
"What's wrong?" Alastor asks. Veronica shows him the photo.
"This douchebag is her ex and he's here. He's like, stalked her or some shit!" Veronica explains. "I know it's not my place to say, sorry girlie -" she sends you an apologetic look "- but this asshole abused her. It's why she left him."
Now you hear your name. It's Alastor this time. He has your head in his hands, forcing you to look at him. His eyes are glowing red as he peers into yours. You gasp, the damn breaking as you begin to cry. "H-He can't…H-He's going to hurt me!"
"Not while I'm here, he's not," Alastor states, voice hard as he scoops you into his arms. You let him, too scared to move on your own. Veronica's eyes widen, pointing between the two of you.
"Ok, we're going to revisit this later, but right. Let's leave." She takes your keys and gets in the driver's seat, Alastor placing you in the back with him. He buckles you up as Veronica begins to skid off from the parking lot and back to your apartment.
"Does he know where she lives?" you hear Alastor ask, clearly talking to Veronica.
"Not that I know of?" she answers. "I mean, if he showed up there, chances are it's a yes." She hits the steering wheel with the palm of her hand. "God! Why are men such pigs? No offense."
"None taken," Alastor says, looking back down at you. You're shaking like a leaf, eyes unfocused, no doubt lost in your thoughts. He tugs at your chin again but you can't see him. Not clearly. Everything around  you is buzzing, memories of your past clouding your mind. The arguments, the fights, the bruises. You absently rub at your thighs, the scars throbbing. You feel sick.
"Stop," you whisper but it's unheard. You say it again, louder. "Stop!" Veronica slams on the breaks, a car blaring its horn behind you. You claw your way out of the car just as the bile rises. You puke violently, your stomach lurching in disgust as your mind plagues you with the memories of that night. His hands on your body, on your throat, ignoring your cries and pleas for  him to stop. You had begged him, even praying for death when he wouldn't stop. You puke again, couching. A hand rubs your back, but you can't tell who.
"We need to get her back to the apartment," you hear someone say. "It's not safe out here."
Your name is called, faded and faint but you hear it. Then it's in your head, beckoning you. You feel yourself calming down, the sickness in your stomach ebbing away. You stand on weak legs, wobbling and swaying. The hand on your back comes to rest at your hip, steadying you. It's Alastor.
You whimper and lean into him. He picks you back up in his arms, carrying you back to the car. This time, he doesn't bother to buckle you, keeping you in his arms, tight against his chest. You hold on to him, needing him like a lifeline. Veronica gets back in and continues the drive.
It doesn't take long before you're being carried into the apartment, Veronica deadbolting the door behind you. Alastor takes you to your room, setting you on the bed. He goes to move away but you clasp tightly to his shirt. A silent hint for him to stay. He sits down by your side, his hand grasping yours to hold. You don't want to be alone. You can't.
Veronica joins you two, your phone in her hand. She looks pissed, angrier than earlier as she holds the screen up to you. It's opened to your messages and you see the new number, the letters making you feel sick all over again.
'Thought you could get away?'
You grab the phone, deleting the message instantly, but another appears.
'I'm coming for you, little rabbit.'
You throw the phone against your wall, the screen cracking. It goes off again with another notification, then another. You cover your ears, begging it to stop.
"Geez, this guy can't take a hint!" Veronica says. "Should I call the police?" You shake your head violently.
"No!" you shout. "No cops. Please. It'll only make it worse." You remember the last time you got the cops involved. He had charmed his way out of the dispute so easily and the consequences afterwards had nearly killed you. "No cops."
"Ok, ok. No cops." Veronica shifts by your side, kneeling down. "But, girlie, we gotta do something. I've seen the aftermath of this asshole. It took me a year just to get you out of the house. I'm not letting him ruin you again."
"You don't understand," you whisper, rocking back and forth now. "He won't stop. He won't stop coming for me. Not until I'm dead."
"I doubt he'll kill you. Stalk you? Sure. Threaten you? What abusive ex doesn't?"
"Veronica," you interrupt her. It's time to come clean. To tell her everything. "He almost has." Veronica's eyes widen.
"What are you talking about?"
"John almost killed me," you confess, hating the way his name bites at your tongue. "The last time I tried to escape, he nearly killed me, telling me if I ever left him again, he would finish the job. He even…" you trail off, not able to say out loud the horrendous things he did to you. Instead, you sit upright, turning your torso as you lift your shirt. On your lower back at marks, scars from his doing. You don't show her the others, already feeling like you're going to puke again.
"I didn't know." She lifts her hand, as if to touch them, but stops. You lower your shirt back down.
"I didn't tell you," you say. "I didn't want you to know. It's something I've been trying so hard to forget." You glance now, to Alastor. He's been silent the whole time and when you look at him, you know why. His body is vibrating with anger, his eyes cold and dark. The smile he always has, the one that's come to comfort you, is stretched so thin you're worried his skin will crack.
"Alastor?" you call out. His head snaps to you, the anger dissolving only a little. He forces his smile to relax some, for your sake. "Veronica, could I have some time with Alastor? Alone?" You know she's going to question you about it later, but thankfully, she does as you ask. Once she's out of your room, the door shut, you grab Alastor's hands. His finger lengthen, the skin darkening as claws appear. His human form fades away as the demon he is shines through. You gasp.
His horns are large, doubled in size and nearly reaching your ceiling. His eyes are pitch black save for two tiny, red dots. Blood drips down his chin as his sharp teeth bite into his lip, strained from how tight he clenches his jaw.
You should be horrified, terrified, absolutely appalled by his appearance, but you aren't.
Your hand reaches tenderly up to him, turning him to look at you. "Al," you softly speak his name. He leans into your touch but doesn't speak, not at first. A low, guttural growl resonates from within his chest.
"I won't let him touch you." His voice is deep, static dripping on every word. Your startled when he quickly leans over you, his upper body caging you in as he places his hands on either side of your head, forcing you to lay back. "He can't have you."
"He won't." You keep your voice gentle, letting Alastor know that you trust him.
Trust him?
You can't trust him. He's a demon.
No, you disagree with the voice in your head. He may be a demon but you can trust him.
"You said you'll protect me, right?" you ask, watching as Alastor's body slowly begins to relax. You place a hand on his neck, fingers rubbing at the underside of his hair. His antlers shrink back down, the black of his eyes gone with a blink, those warm, red orbs back to normal. You smile up at him, "There he is."
"Sorry," Alastor breathes out.
"It's ok." You don't feel any fear like you did earlier, only warmth and security. You knew that, no matter what, Alastor was here. He was with you and he wouldn't let anything happen to you. Demon or not, you knew the moment he vowed to protect you, you were in love with him.
"I should," Alastor says, moving away from you. He sits at the end of your bed, putting space between you. It makes your heart ache, but you understand. He doesn't want to scare you.
"Girlie, I'm coming in!" Veronica opens your door. "I brought you some water." You panic for a second, looking to Alastor, but he's back to his human form. How quickly he could do that never ceased to amaze you.
She hands you a glass and you thank you, gulping it down. You hadn't realized your throat was so dry, the cold liquid soothing. You set the glass down and stand up, feeling a renewed strength. You walk over to where your phone laid, bending over to pick it up. The screen lit up, thirty new messages unread. You opened them, anger building as you read each one.
"That does it." You turn on your heel, looking at Veronica and Alastor. "If he wants me, I'm not going down without a fight."
"Hell yeah! That's what I'm talking about!"
"You're not confronting him," Alastor states and you shake your head.
"No, but I am going to lure him into a trap. This bastard thinks he can get away with this, he's got another thing coming." You walk back over to your bed. "Here's the plan. Veronica, you'll be my 911 operator. I'm going to get him to think I'm meeting up with him -"
"No."
"- and then once he shows up, I'm gonna have my phone recording everything. Once he starts acting up, you'll call the police -"
"No."
"- and when they get there, I'll have everything on video. Evidence to prove my case against him."
"That's not happening," Alastor repeats, louder this time.
"Don't worry," you say, "you're going to be my backup. If he gets out of hand, you'll jump in and save me. I'll be fine." Alastor doesn't look like he believes you.
"Ok, so when are we doing this?" Veronica asks. You look at your phone, reading the last message John sent you.
"Tomorrow." You swipe your thumbs over the keyboard, typing out the text and hit send. It doesn't even take a second before he's responding, putting  your plan into action.
"Tomorrow, I'm making this bastard pay."

YOU
november 15th, 2024
this was fucking impossible. 20 years later. and still, fighting to survive. fighting your way to survive by yourself, losing the people you stuck by, fighting to save people just for them to be taken by the world you lived in. you were pissed, to say the least. and as you trudge through city after city, sleeping and camping in the woods, killing those who were alive and those who weren’t people anymore, you truly wished you were dead. you practically were, it was going to find you sooner or later. death.
but you accepted it. you knew that this long trail of steps you've taken from texas to where ever you are now, was going to come to an end. but it wasn't ending without a never ending fight you put up for yourself. as long as you were here, you refused to accept defeat and lay down to die.
with all of the silence you had to yourself, you found yourself thinking a lot. you remembered the first day it started, down to the minute, down to what you were wearing. you were only five, five years old when everything came crashing down, literally. you promised yourself that the fear you felt growing up as a child  and having to watch everyone you’ve ever loved be ripped from you, picking up a gun to shoot your first clicker, and picking it up again to kill those who tried to kill you—you wouldn’t experience again.
so, you avoided civilization. or what FEDRA called civilization. it was bullshit to you. it felt like an excuse for not having anything locked and loaded in a situation like this, and it felt the same as your last government. it was suppression, control, lack of free will. they wanted assimilation and compliance in return for what seemed like a dictatorship ran by none other, those in power. those who were left at least. you'd been trapped inside of a QZ not too far from texas, one with harsh summers and hot winters. you felt like you were in actual hell.
you avoided people, their pleas for help as you traveled by yourself or in groups that never lasted long. the only person that mattered in this world was you, and there was no grace from god that you would find any other family, any other friends—because you had none. you didn't make any, and you were better off for it.
you couldn’t deny that you had days where you wanted to let it go. let all of the survival tactics, the lessons you’ve learned from people you traveled with—let yourself be consumed by the evil of the world.
you also didn’t understand why people, and yourself, fought so hard to live in a world that was worse than the one before. why people fought so hard to live in a world where now, people just take. it was an endless cycle of blood and violence, the only way of survival is by taking. never giving, because when you give, you’re dead.
but you realized if you didn't fight, if you didn't resort to a bullet to the head, you would die just like the ones around you. you tried to be better than the people that were left. by better you meant not resorting to killing innocent people to survive, but you failed. and so did the rest of the world.
you really didn't know who was innocent and who was guilty. it wasn't black and white. everyone did what they needed to do to survive, and if it meant being the guilty one, then you were okay with that. some people were in the wrong place at the wrong time, fighting for the wrong side, invested in a belief that the world will be good if we are divided.
you refused to take the accountability of taking someone's life. it wasn't your fault. this wasn't what you were made to be doing. you told yourself, but the blood on your hands said otherwise. it was this fucked up cycle that you grew apart of, because if you didn't assimilate you would die. so it got easier to take the lives of people, it was for your own safety.
as you carefully stepped in the snow, nothing but rocks, trees and snow surrounding you, you thought about how this was almost comical to you. how many movies about zombie apocalypses, night of the living dead, were out and you still felt it was impossible. there was no way that the world could turn into ruins within 24 hours, no way that your friends and family turned into vessels, having to die at your hand. this was simply too hard to wrap your head around, even being almost 26 years old now. you truly didn’t know how you made it this long, how you were able to keep up and fight despite everything–even down to the way you were shaped.
you were five when it happened, not knowing what the concept of anything really was. and as you got older— you did what you could to make surviving the easiest for you, rummaging through empty yet not so empty malls to find a decent sports bra, taking feminine hygiene needs and making sure your clothes fit loose/tight enough for your benefit. you learned as you lived, and you didn’t have much around you to learn from. you imagined being a woman in the real world was less difficult than this, but realized that life as a woman has never been easy. just made it more real in the apocalypse.
the violence, the danger, the belief towards women just got worse. you were at risk just existing, and the infected that walked amongst you weren't the only danger of humanity. you knew that you'd die by the hands of your fellow person, a clicker, or hunger. it was only a matter of time.
it wasn’t until you heard the sounds of the devilish creatures screech in a distance that you shook back to your reality. it was way too dark, snow falling too fast to see clearly, only using your ability of sight and precision to protect yourself. your gun felt light in your hand as you squeezed, finger lightly over the trigger as you reminded yourself of quietness. you knew you should’ve stayed back, waited until the sun was out to at least search for safety. but you knew you wouldn’t make it, the stab wound was lodged deep in your abdomen. you held the wound tight hoping to stop the bleeding, bit it was too much, too deep.
you realized the time you took to reflect back on your life and stolen childhood, it was your life flashing before your eyes.
you truly didn’t know where you were, you didn’t know how you got there, and you knew this might be your last night. here you were in the midst of snow and darkness, and you felt yourself losing hope. what were you fighting for exactly? you were tired. you fled from your safe space miles back, and you fled from the place before that, and before that. all you knew was that your stomach was crying to be fed and fixed up, your throat was dry with nothing but a lick of spit, and while you made your way closer towards the sound of a river you noticed that the sound of clickers sounded more distant.
there was no pain in your stomach anymore, it was a throbbing dullness now and you felt the tips of your fingers tingling, becoming frozen around your gun. you weren’t sure if it was because your ears began to ring and your vision started blacking out on the edges, but you felt sick.
before you could even register that you were going down, you fell into the hard snow and accepted the fact that this was it. and it was okay. you sunk into the darkness, feeling warm all around now, and allowed it.
⭒☆━━━━━━━━━━━☆⭒☆━━━━━━━━━━━☆⭒
tommy and joel were on their patrol route around the commune when they heard the sound of screeching, possibly heading the other way. it was late when maria told tommy there was a wire tripped right outside of the commune, needing him and joel to take a patrol shift at eleven at night instead of the two rookies that were on it.
“they ain’t gonna come over here,” tommy reassured, mostly for himself after hearing the screeches of distant infected.
“right,” joel sarcastically agreed, keeping his rifle aimed and ready for anything and anyone to jump out at him or tommy. joel kept following the trail he remembered following himself, wanting to make sure there wasn’t anything going on without his knowledge of it.
joel was tired, to be frank. but the minute he heard there was a threat around the area, he didn't waste time to gear up and tell ellie to stay inside while he's gone. now, he and tommy were searching for something, anything that could be the cause of maria's concern.
they walked around a little more, searching the ground area and looking within the trees, finding nothing but a few deer and elk.
“joel!” tommy yelled out.
joel stopped in his tracks, tightening the grip on his rifle and immediately following his brother’s panicked voice.
“joel! c’mere man, holy fuck,” tommy shouted, sending joels heart racing and making him speed up, passing by trees and large rocks to get to him.
“where are ya?” he shouted panicked, and as tommy said ‘over here,’ joel followed his voice, the only thing he could hear being the crunch of the snow. finally, he made it towards the river where tommy was kneeling down before something, something that looked like a body.
“look man, we gotta take her back,” tommy said, checking her pulse and setting his gun down. joel just shook his head, looking at the small pool of blood that trailed from the woman's abdomen in the snow.
“she’s dead. if she’s been out here for however long, she’s gone. ain’t worth it.” he gruffly said, pointing his rifle at the body instead.
“joel her heart is beatin’, i can feel her pulse. we gotta take her,” tommy said and joel felt himself grow angry.
“it ain’t worth it.” he said once again and tommy shook his head, moving to flip your body over to see your face.
tommy swiftly moved your backpack and gun out of the way, and saw how blue your face was. your lips were practically purple, and your body was freezing cold, stiff. both the men's eyes trailed to the blood soaked white shirt that clung to your body, the injury deep and wide. but tommy saw the shallow breaths, he saw your chest stutter as it tried to rise and fall.
“she’s just a kid, joel,” he said.
he was right. joel was fifty seven, and tommy was nearing his late forties and he could tell you weren’t older than thirty. why should it matter? he wanted to say, but he knew. his own lack of trust makes him take a bit to decide. what if it’s a trap? what if she got bit? then she wouldn’t be cold and frozen, idiot. what if this is just a distraction? from what! joel’s inner thoughts fighting with each other, fighting with his gut and finally closed his eyes hard before opening them back up.
“fuck,” he sighed and moved his rifle to sit on his shoulder, going to tommy and deciding to just pick your body up and carry you bridal style.
tommy saw joel was angry, already knowing the thoughts in his mind saying she wasn't worth it, the girl's practically dead.
“go,” joel demanded and began to follow him as tommy protected the both of you. he didn’t know if this was a good idea. if taking you in and disrupting the course of nature was the best idea. just another mouth to feed. he thought to himself. if you even survived this. he knew he was cold hearted, he knew he wasn’t close to being a good person.
joel couldn’t help it. he was selfish, he was hard headed, and he was cold. children, women, animals, it got to a point where it was all the same to him. if you were gone, you were gone. he’d killed so many clickers who posed themselves as children, so many women who weren’t women anymore, families even. he was desensitized in the worst way and even though it benefited him and helped keep him alive for twenty years, it was his biggest downfall.
a little bit of him wished he was softer. more inviting, more trusting but in what fucking world? this was always a world of hate, he thought. a world of pain and despair, and it was only a matter of time before it turned into some sort of hell.
and as he carried you in your arms, limp and blue, he wondered if you were even going to make it. what was the point of trudging through all of this snow for a dead body? he didn’t have much hope for anything else, for anything but his and ellie’s survival. and as you soaked his shirt with blood, he highly doubted there was a chance you'd live. maybe it was for the best.
joel was just so angry. this was not what he wanted to find. he did not want to be responsible for another person, one who seemed like she didn't even put up a fight. had she walked thirty more feet she would've made it. he thought.
the thing about joel is that the things that softened everyone else up, just made him irritated. even the fact that ellie opened him up as much as she did, he even wanted to resent her for it. but he couldn’t, because to him he could never blame ellie for anything. she was just a kid. but she gave him something to fight for, gave him hope again in a world where hope was seen as childish, naive. he couldn’t resent her for that.
⭒☆━━━━━━━━━━━☆⭒☆━━━━━━━━━━━☆⭒
was this life after death? you knew your eyes were closed, but you didn’t know how you were still conscious. until you heard the sounds of beeping and heart monitors, you believed you had found purgatory. you wanted to smile, and it creeped on your lips until you heard the noises of what sounded like people shuffling around and immediately you shot up with your eyes wide.
you were running on pure adrenaline. where am i? what the fuck? where is my gun? who the fuck are these people?
you looked around the room to see a woman, a man and another child  in  the beds, the woman was pregnant, the child was coughing into their arm. but it wasn’t until you looked right next to you to see a man with a mustache and a woman with locs standing closer to your hospital bed.
“where the fuck is my shit?” you asked harshly, pulling the IV out of your arm and detaching any other wires on your body.
“no, no honey don’t do that,” the woman said as she tried to step closer to you, and as you were going to defend yourself from her touch, you looked down and saw the swollen belly in all her vulnerability. so all you did was scoot further back into your bed, not wanting to get violent. that's a first.
“where is my gun?” you asked, looking around at the makeshift infirmary that was stocked with everything you could possibly need.
“we have it. just for right now, you can have everything back just, who are you? was there anyone else with you? do you work for anyone?” the man said swiftly.
you just laughed breathlessly, looking down at the fact that you were naked in a hospital gown but feeling the sharp pain of the wound you remembered, now wrapped with gauze around your abdomen.
“i don’t have to tell you a fuckin’ thing,” you said shaking your head.
“just let me go. i wanna go.” you couldn’t help but feel scared. the same fear that rattled you as a kid. you couldn't even meet their eyes. you forgot how to talk to people really.
“look, we can help you. i’m tommy, this is my wife maria. she managed and built a space for us to live with the help of her community, our community,  without the threat of those ugly fuckin’ things. you’re here in jackson, wyoming. it’s a safe community.” he said and you looked between the two. wyoming?
“we don’t take kindly to strangers, dear. and you happened upon an area that was real close to our commune, tommy and his brother found you, almost dead, bleeding to death.” maria said as she sat down on the other side of the bed, you just watched her.
“why didn’t you just leave me?” you asked, weakly. you felt so powerless. so bare. no gun, no knife, no protection.
“i told ya,” a gruff voice said, making your eyes search the room to see a broad dark figure walking to the edge of your bed. your eyebrows knit together at him and looked away quickly.
“what were you doin’ out there anyway?” tommy asked and you shook your head, looking down at your hands.
“how long have i been here?” you ignored his question and tommy looked between maria and the man at the foot of your bed, who watched you closely.
“a week.” you whipped your head to maria, asking with your eyes if she was serious.
“you were taking your last breaths when they found you. you were so frozen, so stiff we didn’t really think you’d make it past that night. but, we managed to warm you up and put a feeding tube through your nose, stitch you up, hoping for the best. we weren’t sure you’d wake up.” maria informed and you ran your fingers through your hair, suddenly tired.
“i need to go.” you whispered.
“go where? is there someone you’re meetin’ or waitin’ on?” tommy asked. joel was silent, watching the exchange between everyone. but his eyes never leaving your figure. he looked at you like he didn't trust you, th same way you looked at all three of them.
“are you just gonna stare at me like a fuckin’ asshole or what?” you spit, looking at the man who was staring at you and glaring at him. he was making you so angry for some odd reason, not understanding why he’s just staring and not talking.
“no. i’m not meeting no one. i don’t work for anyone. i don’t even remember where i was last before coming up here. i knew i wasn’t gonna make it.” you confessed and the three of them looked between each other.
“you were alone?” maria asked, getting closer. you were so tired, so drained all of the sudden.
“been that way since 2012.” you said.
“how old are you?” joel asked finally, his arms crossed against his chest.
“i’m twenty five.” you said reluctantly and tommy shook his head, looking at maria. tommy was right. you were just a kid.
“how long before i can leave?” you asked.
“i want you to stay,” she said and joel looked at her sideways. this wasn’t like maria, or tommy actually. joel wondered if this was putting everything at risk, if taking you in like a lost kitten was going to jeopardize everything.
“you don’t trust us. that’s fine. you don’t want to stay? that’s fine. but letting you go back out there right now is suicide, and you know it. stay for a few weeks, or even a week. everyone deserves a home and a community, especially now. let me help you.” maria pleaded.
she didn’t know exactly why she felt so strongly about you, why she was okay with letting everyone else be denied and dumped from this place. even killed if they didn't leave fast enough. maybe it was her pregnancy, but she felt enough compassion to compensate for all three of you.
she sensed a sadness in you. everyone carried themselves in sadness, regret, guilt. but maria had never seen it so darkly, and she’s been around joel. she knew you could protect yourself out there, that’s not why it was suicide to go back in the open. it was suicide because she knew that’s what you wanted. she knew because she’s been there before.
“why? what for? i’m just another mouth to feed, another person to take care of. it’s better if i’m on my own.” joel wanted to laugh honestly. he said the exact same thing, and honestly felt the exact same way. he understood where you were coming from, he saw the pain in your face, the eagerness to stand alone even if it killed you.
“the more the merrier.”
⭒☆━━━━━━━━━━━☆⭒☆━━━━━━━━━━━☆⭒
you finally got your things back, but not how you remembered and when joel threw the backpack on your hospital bed, you glared at him.
“where’s my walkman?” you asked and he raised his eyebrow.
“your walkman? it’s 2024,” joel said as a joke and you glared at him, fisting the fabric of your backpack.
“where is it?” you asked again and he shook his head, shrugging his shoulders.
“it was broken, guess you landed on it or somethin’. maria took it down to get it fixed.” you looked down at your bag again and noticed your knife, ammo, and a smaller gun was still in there as well as cassettes that belonged to your mother, empty water bottles, tampons, and matches. you decided to get off the bed, leaving your backpack there and searching the room that was lined with hospital beds.
“where are my clothes?” you asked him and he nodded to the shelf above the bed, and you sighed.
without missing a beat you swiftly got on the bed and stood up to grab the clothes, not the ones you came in but new ones, duller ones. it was a faded red t-shirt with some university logo, a black sports bra, black underwear and dark brown cargo jeans that were big enough to fit you.
“can you close the curtain?” you asked, and he stepped back before closing it and letting you be in your own privacy to change. but you saw his shadow under the curtain, still standing there.
“you don’t have to babysit me. i’m not gonna kill anyone.” you said as you removed the gown and slid on the undergarments quickly.
“you think i want to? got a lot of other things to do, maria put you on suicide watch.” he said from behind the curtain, facing all the other beds and the exit. you scoffed and slid the shirt over your body, a little snug but good enough for you.
you pulled the curtains away from you, grabbing your backpack and heading to the door that kept you.
“where do you think you’re goin’?” he asked as he followed you, grabbing your wrist.
“don’t fucking touch me, are you crazy?!” you asked and took the gun from your waistband, pointing it at him after cocking the hammer.
“get your gun out of my face,” he seethed, letting your wrist go and staring at you with his hands at his side.
“just let me go, don’t say nothin’ to them, let me be on my way. it’s what i want, and i know it’s what you want too.” you said and slowly backed away from him, watching him as carefully as he watched you.
“i can’t let you do that,” he said.
you felt hopeless. like you were stuck there and even as you tried to back into the door, it wouldn’t budge.
“fuck!” you screamed and used the back of your hand that was gripping the gun to wipe the sweat from your forehead.
“don’t do anythin’ stupid, just wait for maria. don’t do nothin’,” he warned and you shook your head.
“or what?! you’ll kill me? here,” you said and cocked your gun again after letting the hammer go back into place, raising it to your temple. “i’ll fuckin’ do it for you. i’m dead anyways! i can’t leave, you’re keepin’ me here, what’s the fucking point!”
for the first time in a while, joel felt his heart beat pick up in anxiety. he was nervous, a feeling he'd only had a few times in his life. not only because you were threatening to scatter your brains everywhere, but because you were doing it in front of three other patients, one pregnant, one child and one in a coma. not only will you traumatize him, but everyone around you and he can’t let you do that.
but a part of him feels for you. because he knows what that feeling was like. to put a gun to your own head and pull the trigger, only it didn’t seem like you’d flinch like he did when you pulled the trigger. you weren’t scared to die, he felt it. you pull the trigger and you’re dead.
joel had his hands up to you, suddenly wanting to take some of that anger and pain from you. you were nine to ten years old when you were forced to be a killer, and he knew it took so much away from you. you were desperate, you were tired, and he understood, for once in his life the sincerity and empathy was present. It was a weird feeling for him, to not want you here but to also want to make sure you’re safe from yourself.
he felt responsible now.
“give me the gun,” he said, stepping closer and closer to you as your finger danced on the trigger. you didn’t acknowledge the crying child, or the expecting mother clutching on to her belly. your eyes were on joels, turning from hard and angry to soft, worried, almost afraid.
“i want to go,” you choked, tears streaming down your face as you pressed into the unwilling door.
“go where? there is no where to go. i reckon your family is gone? hometown gone?” he said, his hands in surrender.
“i shouldn’t be here.” he knew you weren’t talking about jackson. his heart twinged at it, it reminded him too much of when he and ellie witnessed the same thing a year back. he couldn't let it this happen again under his watch.
he saw your hand fall a bit weak, the barrel of the gun sliding on your temple. watching your every movement he stepped closer, and closer—until he was somewhat right in front of you. he figured if you wanted to kill yourself, you wouldn't have thought twice about pulling the trigger, you were unsure, he could tell. he took the opportunity to get as close as you allowed.
“you ain’t gotta trust us. trust is earned. but i can promise you that these folks won’t let anythin’ happen to ya,” he said, “i know what it’s like, i was you. couldn’t trust not a damn person, killed anyone i had to. i’ve lost too. but i found somethin’ worth fightin’ for.”
you just listened. you wanted to fight him on it, you wanted to ignore everything he said and just pull the trigger. you felt it was destined, you couldn’t fight anymore, you didn’t want to. you kept the gun at your temple, and in the silence between the two of you, you hear an immediate worried and frantic ‘what are you doing’ from maria and tommy behind him. you couldn't take your eyes off of joel.
the grip on your gun just gets tighter, and joel notices. he shakes his head fast.
“stop! stay right there.” he said and held up a hand to them, still having his eyes on you.
“i’m tired of fightin’,” he heard your slight texan accent, coming out more in the light of your crying.
maybe it was ellie, maybe it was him still mourning sarah, and all the women he failed. but he felt something in his throat tighten, watching you so vulnerable like this and he doesn’t even know you. he didn’t know why this was so different for him. he’s seen people do this, seen people want to fall off the edge. and for some reason, he can’t fail you. he can’t let you take your life.
“if you stay here, you ain’t gotta fight by yourself no more. you ain’t alone out here,” joel said and reached slow to your hand.
“let me help you, please,” you heard the honesty in his voice, how he was practicing pleading for you to put it down.
your eyes kept searching his as you took your lip between your teeth, streams pouring down your face. you let him grab the gun, click the safety on and put it in his waistband. and as you stood there, silently crying and staring into his eyes asking for help, asking for comfort—he couldn’t do it. he couldn’t simply wrap his arms around you to let you fall apart for a minute, he wouldn’t let himself.
he was like stone, and even though he talked you off a ledge, his heart wouldn't open the way you needed right now. he was going to tell you to leave, to take it somewhere else because now you couldn't be trusted alone. he was angry now. the fact that you did that in front of not only him but a child, he thought you were selfish. but he couldn't blame you.
he knew something was off with you. he saw how this world chewed people up and spit them out, sometimes swallowing them whole. he knew what it did to people, turning them into monsters themselves or people too weak to fight. to him, you weren't the monster.
he was.
maria ran past joel even being five months pregnant, and took you in her arms once she got to you. but your eyes could never leave joels, you were stuck. you were out of it, out of your mind, almost out of your body. you didn’t want this life, and you didn’t want to be around strangers. for once, in a long fucking time, you were scared.

I made my way down the dimly lit street. I was freezing and pissed off and high out of my mind off whatever my asshole date had given me. I met some loser named Marcus on Instagram and met him in downtown Boston to hangout. We took some pills and drove around but when I wouldn’t put out, he kicked me to the curb.
So here I was, walking in the ghetto streets of Boston at 2am. No sixteen year old should be out here in this area, especially at this hour, but I thought I was invincible. My only mistake was not charging my phone before I left. The only person who knew where I was was Alahna. Everyone else assumed I was spending the night at Alahna’s and I made her swear not to tell anyone. My parents would ground me for the rest of my life and Chris, well, Chris just worried. A lot. He was my best friend after all.
I clutched my purse close to my body, keeping my head down and avoiding eye contact with anyone that was out at this hour. I noticed what looked like a gas station a couple blocks ahead so I picked up the pace, hoping they would have a place I could charge my phone or atleast a phone I could use to call a taxi.
I heard whistling nearby and I froze. “Well good evenin’, darlin’!” A man shouted out and I prayed to God he wasn’t talking to me. I continued walking, quicker now but it wasn’t long before I heard footsteps catching up with me. Two large men surrounded me and I froze once again. “Don’t ya know it’s rude to ignore a man when he’s talkin’ to ya’?”
His southern accent was thick and they both smelled of cheap booze and cigarettes. “What do you want?” I ask nervously, cowering under their dark stares.
“You look a little too nice to be from around these parts. Where ya off to at this hour? Maybe me and my friend here could help ya out,” the man smirked. “For a small fee, of course.”
“If it’s money you want, just take it!” I yelled, thrusting my purse at the man and trying to push past him but his goon was quick to grab me. “Let me go!”
“Oh I don’t think so, Princess. We wanna have some fun.” The men let out a haunting laughter and I could feel the tears welling in my eyes. I should have just fucked that stupid boy. I should have just stayed home.
I began thrashing around as hard as I could, desperately trying to squirm my way out of the mans’ tightening grip. “HELP!” I screamed out. “PLEASE! HELP!”
Before I could get another word out a blunt object struck me across my head and I collapsed to the ground in a dizzy heap. I tried to feel where I’d been hit but my vision was blurred. I could feel a wetness running down the side of my face and landing on the concrete below. I let out an agonizing scream before consciousness completely escaped me.
“Y/n? Y/n? Y/n?” A familiar voice repeating my name in the darkness.
“Chris?” I attempted. I couldn’t feel my lips.
“Y/n, wake up!”
I opened my eyes and drew in a sharp breath, realizing quickly that my lungs were desperate for air. I clutched my chest as I fought to catch my breath.
“You’re okay, sweetheart. Just breathe.” Chris’s soothing voice was like music to my ears
“Fuck, what happened?” I ask after finally steadying my breathing.
“You were screaming in your sleep.” Chris said. “Did you have the nightmare again?”
I sighed, remembering that God awful night. “Yeah, I think so…” I touched the scar on my head. It was almost three inches long, sitting partially on my forehead but most of it was covered by my hair thankfully. I looked over at Chris, he was looking down, twiddling his thumbs and biting his lip. He hated remembering that night. But I owed my life to him.
I crawled into his lap and wrapped my arms around him. I felt him let out a sigh of relief as he snaked his arms around my waist and squeezed me tight. I know how much anxiety he got about my safety after finding me like he did.
What I didn’t know that night was how amazing my friends truly were. Alahna had been tracking my phone the whole night to make sure I was safe and when she realized I was no longer moving by vehicle and instead walking in some sketchy part of downtown Boston, she immediately called Chris and his brothers. Alahna tracked my phone all the way up until it died and then Matt drove up and down the streets of the area I was in. When Chris saw the two guys picking up my limp, bleeding body in an attempt to get me out of my dress, he jumped from his brothers’ moving vehicle without warning to save me. Luckily he had back up. Matt drove up onto the sidewalk towards the men, scaring them off.
I mean, I don’t remember any of this since I was bleeding out and unconscious. But it’s the story I’ve been told. I do faintly remember Chris’s panicked voice calling out my name. I tried desperately to respond to him but I’m not sure if any words made it past my lips.
Since then Chris has definitely been a little overprotective. But I can’t blame him. I’m grateful to him. To Matt, Nick, and Alahna too. If it wasn’t for them I would’ve been raped and most likely dead. Unfortunately, the men who did it were never caught. I tried my best to give a description but the drugs mixed with fear and partial memory loss from my head injury wasn’t enough information for the cops to find them. So the second I turned eighteen and graduated highschool, I was ready to pick up my life and move across the country. Luckily, Chris, Matt, and Nick were blowing up on Youtube and agreed that Los Angeles would be a great place to further their career. So we all left to start a new life.
“I love you.” I told Chris.
“I love you too, Y/n. Are you feeling okay? You were pretty drunk last night.”
I pulled back to look at him with a guilty smirk. “Yeah…sorry about that..”
He gave me a warm smile. “No biggie.”
I looked down at his hand that was now resting on my knee, noticing it was wrapped in a blood soaked bandage. “Fuck Chris! What happened to your hand?!”
“Nothing, don’t worry about it.” He said, attempting to hide his hand.
I could feel the frown forming on my face. “It was my fault…wasn’t it?”
“No! No, sweetheart. It’s not your fault.”
“Yes it is. It always is.” I said, climbing off of him and off the bed entirely. “I always do something to fuck up and worry you and you can’t just let me ruin your fun all the time, Chris!”
“What do you mean? You didn’t ruin anything.” He said, standing up to meet me.
I worked on changing out of Chris’s clothes and into some of my own I had laying around his room. “I just…I just can’t have you worrying about me all the time. When we go out I want you to have fun, let loose, meet girls…” the words tasted bitter on my tongue. Chris almost winced at the sound of them. “I don’t need you to spend all your time and energy taking care of me, okay?”
Chris grinded his jaw, visibly frustrated. “You know I can’t just not do that, Y/n.”
“But why not, Chris?”
“Because you almost died!” His voice was angry now. No, not angry. Hurt. Scared. I could see tears threatening to spill from his eyes. “I-I just can’t let that happen again. I’ll never forgive myself for letting it happen in the first place.”
“Chris…” My heart broke. How could he ever think that was his fault? “You didn’t let anything happen. I was the one who snuck out and didn’t tell anyone. I was a stupid kid and I learned a hard lesson. None of it was ever your fault.”
“But-”
“No buts!” I interrupted him. “It wasn’t your fault. Period. And I owe you my life for saving me that night. But you don’t need to waste yours looking after me. It was seven years ago. We’re adults now. We deserve to be happy and have fun, yeah?”
Chris nodded hesitantly. I could tell he didn’t want to but I hated the idea of him spending all his time focused on my safety and missing out on experiences that could make him truly happy.
“Good. Let’s go get some grub.” I say, offering him a soft smile. He attempts to smile back but the sadness remains in his eyes.
Chris followed me upstairs to the kitchen. “Morning boys!” I greet Matt and Nick.
“How the hell are you so chipper?” Matt asks. “You were absolutely faced last night!”
“She got it all out of her system in our front yard.” Nick chimed in, giving me a fake smile.
“Yeah…sorry about that…” I say, scratching my head.
“Your dress is good as new too, Princess.” Matt adds, motioning to your gold dress hanging from the door to the laundry.
I cringed at the Princess. But decided to ignore it.
“You guys are the bestttt!” I whine, giving them both timid hugs in hopes they’ll forgive me.
“Yeah, yeah. We know.” Nick says, hugging me back. “Here, eat up. We’re going to another party tonight.”
I sit down and nibble on some of the bacon Nick had made.
Chris sat down beside me, quieter than usual but his brothers don’t seem to notice as they go about their morning banter.
The knock on the door surprised us all. The four of us rarely got up before noon. Why we were today is beyond me but our friends wouldn’t have shown up at this hour either.
We all looked at eachother with confusion before Nick went downstairs to open the door. I heard a brief back and forth but couldn’t make out exactly what was being said. Nick made his way back up the stairs and two cops followed him. My stomach dropped.
I stood up out of my seat, instinctively putting myself in front of Chris. “Christopher Sturniolo?” The larger officer said.
“Yeah?” Chris asked, stepping out from behind me. Nick, Matt and I all held our breath.
“You’re under arrest for the assault and battery of a Mr. Cameron Jacobs.”
“What?!”  My voice came out as a squeak. “Assault and battery?! It wasn’t Chris! You’re mistaken.”
“Christopher Sturniolo. The Youtuber? We’re well aware of who he is.” The cop said. Chris stepped forward and the second cop pulled out his handcuffs. I couldn’t believe Chris was just submitting to this. “There have been videos uploaded among various social media platforms of the assault.”
I was at a loss for words. Chris and I had been in trouble before but never charged with something like this.
“Well, we can just bail him out right?” Matt asked.
“Bond won’t be set until Monday morning after he sees the judge. Until then, he will remain in custody.”
I watched as Chris put his hands behind his back. Still in his wife beater and pajama pants he wore to bed. He bit his lip and looked at me with remorseful eyes but remained quiet. I could feel tears welling up in my own eyes. I walked up to him and wrapped my arms around his neck tightly. “I’m so sorry.”
“Shhh,” He hummed into my neck, unable to hug me back. “I love you.” He mumbled before the piece of shit cop pulled him away from me.
The other cop handed Nick his card and I watched as they manhandled Chris down the stairs and out the door. It was like the world was moving in slow motion. My best friend was just ripped away from me in a matter of minutes and I felt so lost, like a part of me was missing.
I palmed my face, wiping the tears away from my eyes before I fished for my phone in my pocket. I opened Instagram and searched Chris Sturniolo. The video from last night was all that came up. I clicked on the first one and watched it. I saw myself leaning on Madi’s shoulder in the background, unaware of the events taking place. I saw Chris snapping and wailing on the dude I almost went home with.
A sob escaped my lips. I was so grateful to Chris for getting me out of that situation but it landed him in jail. If I wasn’t such a mess he wouldn’t fucking be there…
“Okay, so I have some money saved up. I think first thing Monday morning we should-”
“Y/n enough!” Matt yelled. I stopped talking and looked at him with confusion.
“What do you mean? We have to get him out…”
“Yeah! We-” He said, motioning to himself and Nick. “do need to get him out. We need to call our parents. We need to figure out a plan.”
“Matt…” Nick started.
“No! I’m sick of all the shit she drags Chris into!” Matt said before taking a few steps towards me. “All you do is cause him problems. Put him in situations he doesn’t want to be in because he feels like he has to take care of you. You’re the reason Chris did drugs. You’re the reason Chris snuck out. You’re the reason Chris fucked up! He would be so much better off without you! And now look what you’ve done?! He’s in fucking jail cuz you wanted to be a slut!”
I slapped Matt hard across the face. I didn’t mean to. It was just a reaction. He took a deep breath, as did I. He turned to look at me, his blue eyes staring daggers into mine. “Get out.” He said.
I bit back tears and turned on my heel, running down the steps and out the front door to my car. As soon as I was locked inside my car a screamed at the top of my lungs. Letting every single emotion out. I thought they were my friends. I grew up with them. They were like brothers to me. If Matt and Nick felt this way then Chris probably did too. I’ve overstayed my welcome in their lives…
I started my car and sped off down the street. I drove the ten minutes to my apartment complex. It was nowhere near as nice as the Triplets but it worked for me.
I made my way up the stairs, ready to drown myself in a bottle of vodka and rot on my couch but I ran into Danny on my way up.
“Princessss,” He dragged on. “What’s got you so upset?”
That fucking nickname made my blood boil.
“Fuck off, Danny.” I said, walking past him.
“The Sturniolo kid again?” He chuckled, taking a long drag of his cigarette. I swallowed. Just thinking of Chris made me sick. “Ya know those pretty boys will always break your heart, honey.”
“You’re a loser, Danny.” I said before heading up the steps once again.
“I have some product! If you’re interested!”
I paused again. I swore to Chris I’d never use hard shit again. But did Chris really care? With the way his brothers treated me today, it couldn’t have come from nowhere. I grew up with them and rarely had an issue. But if his brothers hated me that much then maybe Chris did too…

It doesn’t take a whole army to convince an addict to go back. The war you fight is in your mind and when you have no soldiers on your side, joining the enemy may be the best choice.
So here I sit, with a needle full of heroin pumped into my bloodstream, feeling the best I’ve felt in years.
Chris who?

In a quiet, dimly lit room, Soap walked her back to her quarters, persistently seeking the information he held. She implored him, "Johnny, you have to tell me what you know. You hate lying; I know this is bothering you."
"Look, I want to tell you everything I know... but in good conscience, I can't," he responded, sighing and avoiding eye contact.
"Why?" she questioned.
He sighed again and looked down, not ready to answer. "You know why, lass..."
"Because he told you not to?" she asked, already aware that Ghost was involved.
Johnny nodded slightly. "I won't tell anyone," she assured him.
"I know, lass... but I have my orders," he explained, struggling with the dilemma. she, looked into his eyes, pleading, "I'm your friend; please do this for me."
"I know... and I will... for you, lass," Simon replied, taking a deep breath. “ the reason it took so long to get you back is because Ghost was trying to replace you with someone else. I fought for you to stay but Ghost was set on keeping you home…” Tears welled up in her eyes as she processed the information.
“he wants to keep you safe, this is the last place he wants you to be, in the middle of danger”
“I'm not in danger if I'm strictly on base”
“lass, this is war. danger surrounds us at every corner, we're lucky to be alive, trust me, I would take you straight home if I could but you're safer with us now”
“if that's true then why wouldn't he just talk to me?” she asks, he laugh as they all knew ghost had never been praised for his communcaitn skills.
“you can't ask Ghost to actually talk about feelings, he's the most closed up person I've ever met.”
“I told you it was different with us”
“it's different, yea. but you still can't ask him to talk. that's just how he's always been, he's never been good with his emotions…”
“fucking men”
“I feel personally attacked”
“you should”
“It’s probably better I get over him now” she admits
“he's a hard guy to get over, lass”
“you got a crush on him too?” she asks, Johnny cackles and nearly collapses on the floor
“he's all yours Soapy” she jokes
“yeah have fun with him tonight, its nearly lights out” he smirks before turning and leaving her alone.
However, emotions escalated when she entered another room to see Simon himself.
"I'm so upset I can't even look at you right now," she declared.
"I know... and I'm sorry," Simon sighed, averting his gaze as she confronted him.
"Sorry for being a prick or sorry for trying to get me fired from my job because I'm not stable enough?" she snapped, her frustration evident. Simon cursed Soap under his breath for divulging the information.
He sighed again, looking away. "When I heard you were coming back, I..."
"How dare you! That was not your call to make! This job is all I have left!" she retorted, her anger escalating.
Simon shook his head. "I'm not sorry, actually."
"Oh, of course not!” she accused, her tone laced with resentment.
“Your sister died, and you gave yourself a few months. You're not ready to be back,"
"You have no idea what's going on inside my head! We haven't spoken since I left that day; you made sure of that!" she defended herself.
"Because you wouldn't listen!" he shot back.
"To what?”
“ I told you to live a life; this isn't where you should be!" Simon argued, frustrated.
"I'm still struggling to understand why you think you know what's best for me. You act like you hate my existence six hours ago!" she exclaimed.
Simon sighed and laid back. "It's not that simple."
"Never is with you," she retorted, turning to look at him.
"And why is that?"
"You tell me, Simon... oh, my bad, I'm not allowed to call you that anymore!" she said sarcastically.
Simon sighed again. "God damn it."
"You went above price and talked to Shepard. You told him I was unstable! How dare you! Do you really hate me that much?" she accused, sitting forward.
"I trusted you more than anyone in this world”
“I did what was best for you," he tried to explain.
"You did what was best for you. If you wanted me to stay away, you should've just asked," she argued, leaning closer.
"I didn't want you to stay away. I wanted you to go live your life," Simon confessed.
"So you thought the best way to make sure I lived my life was to ghost me?" she questioned, sitting forward as their faces were inches apart.
"I waited for you to call for months!" she yells, putting his hand on her cheek.
"Why didn't you? What was so bad that you couldn't pick up the phone?" she pressed, emotions bubbling to the surface.
"I was scared... scared of losing you," Simon admitted, his vulnerability showing.
"So you pushed me away?" she stood up and confronted him.
"God damn it, darling, I..." Simon began, but she stood with him, refusing to back down.
"sit down," he commanded, frustrated.
"Why do you keep barking orders at me? I don't get you!" she shouted back.
"Stop provoking me!" Simon snapped.
"Or what, you'll accidentally slip up and tell me the truth?" she glared at him angrily.
“when Emma died I thought that I was next, I didn't know how I was ever gonna survive without her. I was so utterly broken and then you sat with me. we talked for hours and you told me about your past... you have no idea how much that meant to me. you've been such a mystery and when you were brave enough to tell me those things... that was everything to me. It felt like you were the only person in the world who understood how I felt, you didn't lie and tell me that it would get better. You were honest and you told me it was gonna suck but through the worst pain I would find myself. you are the reason I'm here, your words got me through it. And then to never get a call... I don't know what I did wrong”
As she poured out her feelings, Simon's fury turned into remorse. He realized the impact he had on her life, especially during the tough times.
"I... have been so stupid,"
 she scoffed.
"Listen, love, please, let me explain," Simon pleaded, taking her hand.
"When I saw you again today... I wasn't mad. I was happy," he confessed, trying to bridge the gap between them.
"Yeah, sure felt like it," she retorted, shaking her head.
"No... no listen, I was happy. You have no idea how often you've been on my mind," Simon revealed, looking into her eyes.
"I wish I'd just called you," he expressed regret.
"Why didn't you?" she questioned.
"People who get close to me die," Simon confessed, realization striking her as her heart shatters. Of course, it all made sense now. How had she been so stupid? Simon would never hurt her intentionally if it wasn’t to protect her.
she nodded tearfully. "I understand."
"I never wanted to hurt you. I just wanted you to leave because... I thought you were better off without me," Simon sighed, expressing his misguided intentions.
"You've never been more wrong," she whispered.
"darling," Simon began, but their conversation was interrupted by Soap, barging in with urgent intel.
"We gotta go, but can we talk more when this is over?" Simon asked as he grabbed his gun.
"Be safe," she said
They nodded at each other, acknowledging the unresolved emotions between them as they prepared to face the imminent threat.

Divine and Draconic Differences
The skies were clear and the weather was pleasant as the heroes congregated outside of Wild and Flora’s Hateno home. It was peaceful, a nice and welcomed reprieve from the era before.
Wind, a still growing teenager, was overflowing with energy, tugging around an equally as eager Hyrule, to explore everything possible. He had his spyglass out, sweeping across the vast land of the Wild Era. Every so often, he’d hand his spyglass over to the traveler to allow him a go.
His telescope was focused on a chasm far out, watching the remaining wisps of gloom fade into the air. Mesmerized by the red-purple, he didn’t fully register the white-blue on the edge until it had blocked his view.
“Wild! What the fuck is that?!” Keeping his focus on the serpentine creature in the sky, he heard Wild approach his side with the familiar sound of him activating his slate’s scope mode.
“That’s Naydra, one of the dragons.”
That… didn’t look like a dragon. Dropping his spyglass from his eye, Wind fixed Wild with a stare. The scarred hero stared back.
“Don’t look at me like that. There’s three dragons, they’re all servants of the springs. Naydra happens to be the servant of the Spring of Wisdom, which is,” he grabbed Wind’s shoulder and spun him around, pointing to a mountain peak covered in snow, “right on that peak over there.” Wind moved his gaze to the mountain peak, following Wild’s finger. He could see the vague shape of pillars.
“Huh… so you have dragons too? They look different from mine.” Wind began walking back to the rest of the group, who had been listening in on the conversation, no matter how hard they tried hiding it. Wild took a few seconds to decipher the information, and ran to catch up with the sailor.
“What do you mean “you too”? I didn’t know anyone else had dragons!” Wind shrugged.
“Like I said, mine are different, like Valoo. He was a sky spirit I met during my first adventure. And the only one that didn’t try to kill me.” He plopped down next to Warriors, who offered the young hero one of the apples he had.
“Still! Does anyone else have dragons?” All hands went up except for the smithy, who looked utterly confused as he mouthed dragons over and over, eyes swirling different colors.
“In my defense, all of my dragons wanted to kill me.” Hyrule exclaimed, being seconded by Time, Twilight, Warriors, and Legend.
The five heroes delved into further conversation about their draconic enemies. Wind wiggled into the group, chattering about the gleeoks he fought. Wild chimed in about having to fight gleeoks as well, explaining about the King Gleeoks residing in hard-to-reach locations.
“The dragons I know serve Hylia.” A few grimaced at the mention of the goddess, but the dislike was outweighed by the curiosity of Sky’s dragons.
“The three of them were assigned to watch over different provinces of the Surface. They also protected the sacred flames, and held parts of the Song of the Hero.”
Wild was immediately upon Sky, spitting out questions with very little breaths between, all centered on what they looked like, if they had any powers, and anything of the sort.
“Of course they have powers, they guard and protect the Triforce. Even the gods wouldn’t be able to reach it with them guarding the key to it.
Gods and Goddesses were a touchy subject. Some were openly hostile towards them, others in the middle, and some revered them. Yet, the topic always raised an interesting thought; just how many are there?
“Do you think there’s more than just Hylia?” Came Four’s voice, eyes shining a curious violet.
“There’s the light spirits in my era,” Twilight rested his chin in his palm, “Ordona, Lanayru, Eldin, and Faron. They protect the regions they share names with.”
“Oh, and the Golden Goddesses! They’re the ones that submerged Hyrule!” Wind piped up, leaning against Warriors, who grimaced as the sailor’s sharp elbow dug into his thigh.
A soft hum emitted from Time, who had been running his fingers along his markings, a pensive look across his face. Wild bounded off of Sky, and settled next to Twilight.
“I know of one! Legends talk about a Fierce Deity… they say that if one dons his armor and mask they gain godlike power.”
Time gave a sharp inhale, and his fingers dropped from his face.
Others shook their heads, either not having any other gods, goddesses, or deities in their time, or having the same ones as someone else.
“Not anymore.”
Eight heads turned towards Sky, who had found a stick and was whittling absentmindedly, a stormy look across his face. They all shared a few glances- curiosity, and a little bit of fear.
‘Not anymore’?
“Oh! There is another- the Deity of War.” Hyrule broke the silence, fingers tying blades of grass into circles while his gaze rested on the other heroes.
“Isn’t that the same as the Fierce Deity?” Twilight cocked his head.
Legend scoffed.
“Many think that, but”, he stood up and turned so he was facing all eight heroes, “they are different. He’s the Deity of War, exactly as his name implies; a powerhouse on the battlefield, calculated and quick. The Fierce Deity doesn’t focus on war, he focuses on ferocity, on power, on courage. It’s in their names, it really is that simple.”
The veteran launched further into an explanation about the two, pointing out the similarities and differences, both surface level and deeper. Pointed ears all upright, revealing without words how invested they were in this newly learned-about deity.
Wild shot up out of his seat and ran to the house, slamming the door open, sounds of rustling and clanging could be heard, and the heroes remaining shared concerned glances. The current era’s hero came racing back out- not bothering to shut the door- with a book in his grasp.
“Legends Throughout the Ages” read the title of the book in intricate gold. The book itself seemed to be in good condition, missing the normal wear and tear they had seen on other things in the champion’s era.
“I know about him! Flora was talking about some books she had found in the castle,” he thumbed through the pages, “and she thought I would like this one… Aha!” Wild smoothed the book to lay flat on pages marked with blue fabric scraps.
On the pages were long paragraphs of stories and legends of the deity, exploring where he originated from and what eras his legends came from. Taking up a sizable portion of the right page was an image.
“Hey, he kind of looks like Warriors!”
Wind grabbed the book from Wild and pranced back over to the captain, who only raised an eyebrow at him, his now finished apple set off to the side. The sailor raised the book next to Warriors and basked in the ‘oohs’ when they realized that their youngest was right.
The picture and the captain looked nearly identical; only differentiated by the gold and blue markings on the deity’s face, blank eyes, and the color of the armor- a vibrant gold- and the tunic- a pale cream.
Snatching the book, Warriors scanned over the page, lingering on the photo a little longer.
“I don’t see it.”
That caused an uproar, as Wind and Wild both pounced on the captain, claiming that he was wrong and everyone could very well see it, while Hyrule just looked at the captain like he had grown a second head. The others groaned quietly.
There goes the relaxing day they were hoping for.

Tumblr media
[placing this in case the read more messed up]
who knew after an incident that so happened to go viral. to the point where you were kidnapped and threatened to be sued by BELIFT, would actually get you to meet lee heeseung and be his girlfriend.
the past 7 months you could never have thought that. it had only been 7 months but it felt like a whole year when it happened. somehow it felt nostalgic looking back the tweets you had. it was hectic. complete 0.01% chance of this happening to anyone in the world. yet, somehow you were blessed to have gone through this.
you managed to steal heeseung’s heart. you made new friends but they’re actual idols (read: enhypen). you became famous. fought a company for a stupid reason which was that you were impersonating their idol. you even kicked a creepy staff out of BELIFT! which, you weren’t surprised. she’s a sasaeng at this point. maybe worse.
but oh my god, dating lee heeseung. it’s such a blessing-
“princess?” heeseung waves his hand in front of you. “are you having an inner monologue or something?” he snorts.
you rolled your eyes, “do you never have an inner monologue?”
“no? why would I?”
“lame. you ain’t in your main character era.”
“princess, I’m always the main character and you know it.” he smirks. you shoved him lightly.
“god, you’re starting to sound like sunghoon.”
“hmm, it’s as if I haven’t been living with him for the past 3 years.” he says with sarcasm.
“did you and sunoo have some sass off or something? why are you so sassy today?”
“sorry, I just don’t understand why some ENGENEs don’t appreciate the dancers’ hard work. I mean I get they’re girls but fucking hell, we’re just dancing to the choreo given to us.”
“well, do you want my honest opinion?”
“oh are you jealous too, princess?” he smirks a little.
“yeah, I am but i’m jealous of you. not the dancers. they’re hot. do you have their numbers by the w-”
“no. I don’t text the dancers so you can’t have their numbers.” he sulks.
“aww, is my little heeseung angy.” you cooed at heeseung. he huffs.
“angy isn’t even a word.”
“in my books it is and besides you’re so cute when you’re jealous.”
“I thought you’d be mad.”
“pfftt why would I be mad. I know it’s just a dance, you’ve practiced this for months. which makes it even better for the chemistry.”
“yeah but my part has you know…”
“what? her just literally trailing her hands on your arms? I mean it did get me jealous but at the end of the day, who are you kissing?” you smirked.
“you…” heeseung pouts.
“exactly.” you smiled. “i’m not worried about you cheating on me, heeseung. besides, I don’t think you could cheat on me because you love me too much.”
“you’re right.” heeseung grabs your hand and squeezes it. “I love you too much for that.”
“that’s my boy.” you proudly say.
meanwhile, on the other side of the wall.
“jayyyyy.” mae whines. jay smirks.
“what is this? my girlfriend is acting all whiny? it’s like you and (name) noona switched bodies.”
“urghh i’m sorry i’m having period cramps.” mae complains. jay’s eyes widened.
he gasps, “my queen is in pain? oh my god, let me go grab tons of period care things!” jay runs out of the room.
there was a scream across the hall.
“YAHHH NISHIMURA RIKI!!! DID YOU USE MY FACIAL WASH???” subin yells.
there were a couple of haste footsteps, which only meant…
“NOONA WAIT!” ni-ki yells out. let's all pray for ni-ki that he gets out alive safely.
"YAH YAH! break it up!" jungwon yells.
both you and heeseung could hear the commotion in the background but you could careless about what was going on because...
"it's you and me against this world, princess." heeseung purrs.
"are you trying to seduce with 'Bite Me' or something?" you deadpans.
"what? no-" heeseung sighs. "forget it. I was just being romantic."
you narrowed your eyes at heeseung, "anyways, i heard you guys are gonna start with world tours soon."
"ah, right. the 'fate' world tour. will you be watching it?"
"do you think i'm made of money? heeseung, i'm a broke college student."
"you have a job?"
"a mere cafe job. that's gonna take me months to save up. i could even barely afford to buy the ‘Dark Moon’ album.” you huffed.
“aww, princess. you have me, I could’ve gotten the albums for you for free and I could’ve thrown my photocards in there for extras.” he pinches your cheeks.
"now where is the fun in that? i like the surprise element of opening albums."
"and if you don't get any of my photocards?" heeseung folds his arms.
"then too bad. oh right, i saw jay looking sooo hot in that vampire photocard-"
heeseung shuts you up with a kiss. there were screams at the door and they were both from jake and sunghoon. you couldn't fully make out what they were saying. something about how mae and jay were busy being chummy, sunoo and subin pinching each others cheeks and then kissing each other.
you couldn't bother to focus on them. not when you have such a hot boy kissing you right on the lips. the same hot boy who was also your boyfriend.
and you couldn't ask for anything better than this.
you were happy.

Terms Of Endearment is one of the best series I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading. I can’t wait for the next update.
I hammered through this last night. It just came out of me. And that’s from your support and concepts and interactions. So thank you.
A little bit of a filler chapter but a necessary chapter. As always, here the Terms Of Endearment Masterlist.
Warnings: Jaidyn….just anything to do with Jaidyn at this point.

“It's nice to finally meet you.” Bradley couldn't help but to beam at you from across the booth he’d slid into across from you. “I mean, other than the time you told me to fuck off.” The Hard Deck was the first place Jake had brought you when he was finally able to get you out of the house. He thought the social interaction would be good for you. What he wasn't banking on though was that his wingman would gravitate to you instantly. Like a moth drawn to a fucking flame. Honestly, he should have expected it.
“I've been meaning to apologise for that.” You smiled as softly as you could back at the moustache clag man sitting across from you and your daughter. “I wasn't in a good place.”
“No need to explain.” Rooster took a sip of his beer as he watched you feed your little girl, she was too busy smiling up at him to register that you were holding up some mashed potato to her lips. “Just promise that I'll get a chance to see you around more often?” You couldn't help but to laugh. “And hear that laugh.” You just nodded in response. Feeling the heat righting in your cheeks the longer you sat in the booth in the corner of the Hard Deck with Bradley.
“Apparently Jake set me up with a job, so I think I'll be sticking around for a while if I'm being honest.” Bradleys lips twitched up into a shit eating smirk that's so pure, there's just something about you that has him so intrigued. He's got his sights set on you.
“You Navy?” He asks just to keep you talking, wanting to know everything about you but he’d settle for what you were willing to tell him.
“Indeed, not an Aviator like you bunch though, I’m just the engineer that makes sure your million dollar toys don't fall apart mid flight.” Again, you smiled, reaching across to stick your hand out to shake Bradley Bradshaw's hand for the first time. Ever. You were sure there was a spark there when his fingers grazed yours. “Fix it Felix at your service.”
Bradley could have swore he felt his heart skip a beat when your hand slid into his for the first time. He couldn't speak, he just sat there and stared until you were clearing your throat. “Are you still there?”
“uh – yeah! Yeah I'm just–” Rooster didn't know how to explain it but it felt like he'd been hit by a bus. So he settled for something super easy to manage. “Felix, its an honour to meet you, I’m Rooster–”

“Okay, okay, okay—“ Sometimes Amilia felt as if she strived for a life of apathy, she’d partake in callous deeds and other mindless acts of greed. There wasn’t jack for free these days, she even thought if given the chance they'd try and tax you just for breathing.
“Fuck, fuck, fuck—“ It's like she fought day to day just to remind herself that she bled like everyone else. Mortal and unsure of her own significance in the world. She took flight in the night from lack of sleep because peace of minds the only time that she felt free. Her own insecurities had a hold on her, but she chased that feeling well into the morning if given the chance to.
“Don’t think about it, just do it—“ Amilia Fisher was abundantly aware that she was just a grain of sand getting washed from God's hands, nothing but a lamb in the great expanse. She caught herself constantly staring into space, feeling so damn insignificant. Primal on the vinyl she felt cro-magnificent. But she was far that. She was important and she was significant and she was all the things she thought she wasn’t. She was just programmed differently.
Amilia had scattered the content of her sister's survival kit across the boot of her car. Looking for something, anything she could use to stall this guy who she knew nothing about. But Jake seemed to be serious enough that whoever this guy was couldn’t leave with that little girl. And Amilia would be condemned to hell for eternity before she let some innocent little girl get swept up in whatever extenuating circumstances were currently going on.
As Jaidyn waited in the lobby of SunnySide daycare, Amilia, as calmly and as cautiously as ever—made her way over to Jaidyns car. She sussed it out for a few seconds before taking a deep breath in. Holding, then exhaling—letting out a small huff as she stabbed the fishing knife her sister kept in her kit into the rubber of Jaidyns back left tire.
“Oh my god, fuck yes.” To be completely honest, this wasn’t the first time Amilia Fisher had stabbed a tire. But she’d learnt from her previous mistakes and although most cars carry a spare which is easily swapped out, they can’t go over eighty kilometres an hour. She wasn’t sure what that worked out to be in miles and she wasn’t sure if Jaidyn even had one.
But what she did know as she stalked around to the right side of Jaidyn Dolans Toyota Corolla, is that you don’t carry two spare tires. Letting out another gruff, she stabbed the knife into the rubber. Pulling it out as she admired her handy work. Watching as the tiers she’d stabbed holes into deflated enough to have the car sinking into the gravel. It made her feel so alive.
“I better not get arrested for that.” She groaned, for a split second regret crept across her face, Amilia was stunned at her own stupidity, knowing that if she was even detained for a split second she could be deported in an instant. Her working visa only allowed her to do just that, work and travel. There was no clause for arrest.
All her regret was instantly washed away when she heard the painful screams and gut wrenching cry’s of a little girl. A little girl being carried out of her daycare by who she only assumed was her father. But it just didn’t sit right—the way Odette pushed at his face, cried her little heart out and just wanted to jump from Jaidyns grip.
“Okay, no—you did the right thing.” Amilia shook her head softly to clear her mind, throwing the knife into the boot as she closed it before making her way into the daycare to collect her nephew. “Hurry the fuck up Hangman—“
***~***~***~***~***~***~***~
Rhett Abbott had a lot on his plate. He was focusing on a national title when his phone rang out in his back pocket. Watching from the sidelines of the pit as his competitors were either demolished or held on just long enough to cling to a slither of a chance at success. He was gonna claim the title though, this was his rodeo, his domain.
“Whoever’s on the other side of that call doesn’t know how important today is for you.” Rhett heard his old brother Perry mumble out of the corner of his lips beside him. Perry hadnt taken his eyes off the guy holding onto Mickey Bull long enough to even turn his head Rhett’s way–but regardless, his point had been heard loud and clear. When Rhett fished his phone out of the back pocket of his jeans and saw none other than the calling ID displaying ‘Rob’ he knew he was in some sort of trouble.
Bob Floyd didn’t call his family for anything unless he was dead or had already died of death. So when Rhett caught himself staring at the caller ID until it left his screen, the call having rung out in his hand, a million scenarios played out in his mind that could have happened to have his eight minute younger brother calling. When the call dropped out with no message left, Rhett was calling back in a millisecond.
Bob’s phone hadn’t buzzed twice in his hand before he was swiping the pad of his thumb across his screen. Sitting in the passenger’s seat of Penny Benjamin’s car that Jake had claimed as his own. He hadnt spoken to his brother in a year, so the impromptu call really had been one that put the fear of God in Rhett Abbott. He was expecting some he didn't know to answer–Rhett expected someone on the other end of the line to tell him that Rob had died in some sort of work accident, because it wasn't Royal or Ceclilia Abbott down as Bob's next of kin. It was Rhett.
“I know you have nationals—“ Bob made sure to let Rhett know he still kept up to date on what his brother was up to. He always had and always would, even if he didn't reach out often to say that he was rooting for him on the sideline.
“Are you alright?” Rhett asked first and foremost. His mind was running a million miles an hour. “Rob?”
“And I know you’re probably in between rides.” Again, Bob knew. He always knew. He ignored Rhett's question because no, he wasn't. None of this was alright. Nothing about this situation was alright. But this wasn't about him, even if he wanted to just crawl into a hole in the wall and forget he ever got involved. “But I’ve got a situation here.” He didn’t know how to say it without sounding stupid or over the top. But regardless Bob had to get it out. “My friend’s girlfriend–” He started, choking back tears of his own because he really did miss his brother and hated the fact it took this to get him to just pick up the damn phone and call. “Her ex had been abusing her, for a while she was good but he’s in town and he’s abusing her again and I smacked him in the fact with chocks but—“
“Rob, Rob—“ Rhett sighed as he pinched the bridge of his nose and stepped away from the roar of the crowd and the sound of the announcer blaring through the speakers. “Slow down man I can’t keep up, you're going a hundred miles an hour”.
“I need you to come out to San Diego for a while.” That’s what Bob was trying to get at to begin with. “I need you to come out to San Diego because there’s a little girl who needs help and her mothers missing and this guy’s literally crazy and I can't do anything of any significance to help.” Jake frowned to himself at Bob's words. That was so far from the truth. If it weren't for Bob there was a major chance you could have ended up beaten half to death.
“I can't come out to San Diego.” It's the answer Bob knew he would be met with, but it was still worth a shot to ask because Bob knew what was at stake here. “You made your bed man, sleep in it and I'll sleep in mine, here.”
“Rhett, please–” Bob choked out. Jake could hear in Bob's voice that it was hard to say. Oh, he’d been there before. “I'm not asking for me, I'm asking because these girls man, they don't deserve to be put through what they're going through.” Rhett doesn't reply, he could hear his name being called over the loudspeaker. He could see Perry waiting for him, gesturing for him to hurry up. Now just wasn't a good time, but when had Bob ever been good at timing? “Please man, I wouldn't be asking if I had any other cards.” Again, Rhett doesn't answer. He doesn't know what to say because there's a part of him that's considering it. “Rhett?”
“Don’t you work for good old Uncle Sam?” Rhett smirked to himself as he kicked his boot in the dirt, holding his phone up tight to his ear. He couldn't do this, not now, not today, not this week. “I’m sure there’s someone in your immediate vicinity that could help you out man—I got my own shit to deal with.” He didn’t mean to sound so unwilling to listen or help. He just didn’t have the time.
“Yeah—“ Bob signed, he let his head hit the back of the headrest as Jake looked over. “Yeah No, no you’re right.” Closing his eyes, Bob knew he’d regret this call. Asking for help. He knew he should’ve kept his mouth shut. It would have been less painful to be turned away from flesh and blood. “Don’t even worry about it, we’ll figure it out.” There's so much tension between Rhett and Bob Jake could cut through it with a knife just by the one sided conversation he was listening in on. Their sibling relationship was clearly strained, to what extent though, Jake wasn't sure.
Before Rhett could answer, Bobs already hung up, frustrated in himself for asking for help when he knew deep down what the answer was always going to be.
No way no how.
“Rob?” Rhett’s asking as he hears nothing but silence. “Hello?” As Rhett pulled his phone away from his ear to see that Bob had hung up, it dawned on him. Bob was pretty self sufficient, he never asks for help from anyone. Especially not him, not if he could go to anyone but Rhett first.
And the one time he did Rhett turned him down.
“Dammit—“ Rhett sighed as he jogged on over to Perry who'd been trying to coax him over for the duration of the call. He was looking all kinds of unimpressed when Rhett finally made it over. “That was Rob–” is all Rhett mumbled out, he’s gritting his teeth because he hates that he's even considering dropping everything as soon as Bob's calling. “Said he needs help.”
“He seems like a real team player.” Jake tuts, he’s got his hands gripped tight around the steering while his foot is pressed to the floor. Road rules be damned. Dot needs him. “Listen, for what it’s worth, I appreciate what you were trying to do, but while we’re on the subject–I don’t remember you ever mentioning having a brother?”
“Twin—“ Bob replied “Twin brother–” He still has his eyes closed. “Got an older brother too, Perry.” Bob lulled his head Jake's way, he didnt wanna dive too deep into his family history. There were more important things going on than the complicated relationship that was the Abbott-Floyd family. Besides, it didn’t matter anyway—Rhett wasn’t coming. “You never told us about Felix and Dot?”
“Guess there was always a part of me that was scared to lose them.” Jake admitted to the weapons system office sitting in his passenger seat. “Thought If I spoke about them, no one would think they were as important as they are.” Jake had kidnapped Bob right after Rooster and Jake had decided on different paths on how to go about the whole situation. He’d marched out of the hanger on a warpath and Bob just so happened to be in his path. “So I kept her and Dot to myself—“ It probably wasn’t the best idea to keep you a secret for so long, but regardless if that ended up on his regret list or not, Jake couldn’t take it back. “Kinda backfired on me though.”
“How so?” Bob asked as Jake turned into the carpark of SunnySide Daycare, catching a glimpse of Amilia standing over Jaidyn with two very familiar children on her hips. Odette Dolan and Chase Fitch.
“Seems that everyone’s willing to put their lives on the line for her.” Jake spoke with enough conviction that even he had himself believing it. “Makes me feel sick to my stomach that I didn't step in sooner.”
***~***~***~***~***~***~***~
“Shut-up!” Jaidyn was high strung, he wasn't prepared for the major hiccup that was not one, but two flat tires. He couldn't deal with the incessant screaming Odette was doing as she wiggled in his grasp either. “Would you just shut the hell up?” He snarled in her face, gripping her forearm a little too tight as she screamed out at an octave that could have broken glass. “God, just like your fucking mother, always fucking crying.”
“Hi!” Amilia cooed. She’d come running up behind Jaidyn as he paced back and forth in the car pack with Odette on his hip. “Hey! I uh, I couldn't help but notice your girl’s a little upset?”
“Someone fucked with my car–” Is all Jaidyn replied with, he barely even acknowledged the worry in Amilias voice when it came to the safety and security of his daughter. “She won't be quiet.”
“Well when people yell at me I tend to wanna cry as well–” It wasn't a lie, moreso a fact Jaidyn didn't wanna know. He scoffed at the way Dot cried a little harder when he turned away from Amilia. Still pacing. “You got a flat or something mate?” Amilia was a grade A shit stirrer, it was one of her favourite past times.
“Would you believe it if I said I've got two?” Jaidyn snarled, still trying to process how he’d ended up with two fucking flat tiers. Amilia just bit her bottom lip for a second before she spoke.
“Damn, win some you lose some I guess.” The chuckle she let escape momentarily went unnoticed as Jaidyn kept pacing back and forth. “I could uh, hold her while you call a tow? I've got nowhere to be and Chase here's pretty content if we kick around for a little while.” It's an offer that Jaidyn nearly passes up, but as he turns to his car, really susses out the damage done, he knows he isn't going anywhere without calling a damn tow truck. Dot’s still crying in his arms, she's in hysterics and all Amilia is focused on is getting her hands on that little girl. “Honest, it's no drama.”
“Uh–yeah, yeah sure here.” Jaidyn is handing over Dot to Amilia who's already holding Chase on her hip. Immediately as if Dot knows she's safe in Amilias arms, she begins to settle. “Far out, you got the magic touch or something have you?”
Unbeknownst to Jaidyn, while Amilia had been in at reception picking up her nephew—she’d asked the woman sitting behind the counter to call the cops. It didn't look good that they’d been asked to call the police on the same guy in the span of one day. What also didn’t look good for the day care the Penny had recommended and had been so fucking good to you and Dot up until this point, is that they’d not once stepped in to help in the situation. Dot was basically in the early stages of being kidnapped by her biological dad. That shit doesn’t look good on paper.
Amilia watched as Jaidyn walked away, leaving Odette in her care. Bouncing her up and down softly to soothe her sobs, growing quieter and quieter with every step Jaidyn took towards his car and away from Odette.
“Guess kids are just super intuitive when it comes to knowing when they’re in safe hands.”
***~***~***~***~***~***~***~
There's some time that passes before Admiral Simpson is returning to the scene unfolding in the janitor's closet. He has the most senior ranking nurse available to him on sight in toe. Lila Adams. Bradley had just been sitting on the ground amongst all the buckets and the chemicals and the rags that had fallen down in the time Jaidyn took to beat you half to death. Holding you in his arms as he rocked gently side to side and sung to you under his breath as you just laid there. Silently sobbing in his warm, comforting arms.
“An ambulance is on the way, shouldn't be too far off now.” Lila crouches down to get a better look at you. Your face was so swollen that you could barely see her. “Lieutenant Bradshaw, she's in pretty bad condition, do you think when the medics arrive you'd be able to step aside and let them get her on a stretcher? Or will I need to call security and have them escort you off base?” It was a threat Rooster took seriously as the order looking woman looked him dead in the eyes, waiting for his answer without so much as twitching.
“I’ll only let her go if you promise me I'll get to hold her again.” Lila knows it's not a question but a demand that escapes Bradley Bradshaw's mouth. He's distort, there's no amount of words that could comfort him right now. In the background Bradley can hear Admiral Simpson on the phone in the hall talking to someone about shutting down training for the next few days, but he doesn't care. All he cares about at the moment is you. “I need to stay with her, please.” Lila nods silently.
“As soon as she's stable and loaded up, I'm sure you'll be able to ride with her to the hospital. I can arrange for someone to contact whoever you need me to contact on her behalf.”
“I'll do that.” Rooster knows the minute Jake finds out about this all hell will break loose. He doesn't want anyone getting caught up in this that doesn't need to be, he didn't want some poor nurse just doing her job to have to deal with the fallout of jake Seresin coming to the realisation that although they tried, Him nor Bradley had followed through with their promise to protect you.
“Alright then, just wait there till the medics arrive and I'll let you know when they need you to move.” Lila coos. “Just keep her still for me, the less she moves around the better.” Bradley nods silently in response, his hands are wrapped in yours as you keep them close to your chest. There's blood everywhere, all over his hands and uniform. He doesn't know where it's coming from exactly.
“Bradley—“ You sound like you're crying when your voice rips through the smog clouding Roosters mind. “You there?”
“I’m here, I’m not going anywhere darlin.” It's hard to mask the way Bradleys voice quivers when he speaks. Looking down at your head that lays heavy and lulled in his lap against his thigh. “Hi beautiful girl.”
“I’d really like to think in the end it’s us.” At first, Bradley thought you were just mumbling incoherently from the pain. But as he leaned over to listen in slightly, his heart broke for what felt like the thousandth time. “But I can’t help myself from wondering if you’re just another lesson.”
“Oh god Y/n no—no baby no lessons to be learnt here.”
“Another person to teach me something.” It's like you weren't listening to Bradley when he spoke to you. “Someone I don’t get to keep.” You were slipping, fast. Barely holding yourself together as unconsciousness threatened to take a hold of you again.
“Hey, listen to me gorgeous.” Bradley can’t help the tears that are streaming down his cheeks. “You have me forever you hear me? You have me for as long as you’ll have me for and long after you decide you don’t want me, because you are so far out of my league it’s a joke.” The way Bradley leans in to press a gentle kiss to your knuckles as he guides your hand up to his mouth has you grinning gently. “You’ve had me since you first told me to fuck off and you’ll have me even after you don’t want me anymore, because you’re it for me.” It's the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. “I love you with all my heart.”
“Roo it’s not doubt.” You could barely talk, but you’d fight the pain of your jaw aching with every word you spoke to tell Bradley how you truly felt. “And I’m not second guessing what we have, I’m just really scared to lose it.” That's about as much as you could stammer out before you were falling limp in Bradleys gasp. He broke out into a full blown sob when he relished you were gone again, he pressed two fingers into your neck to make sure there was still a pulse. There was. But it still didn't make it any easier.
“I'm gonna marry you one day, show you everyday how you were always meant to be loved.”

“Who's holding Dott and Chase?” Bob asked Jake as he pulled up into the carpark of Sunnyside daycare. It makes Jake question to himself how the fuck Amilia knew Payback, because thats Paybacks son on her hip and thats Jaidyn on the ground looking as his back tier.
“That's the love of my life–” Jakes smiling to himself, he's kidding, being over dramatic and overzealous, but there's just a hint of truth in his outspoken declaration. “That's Amilia.”
“Chelsea has a sister named Amilia.” Bob adds a piece to the puzzle as he unclips his seatbelt, watching as Jaidyn stands to turn to Amilia. “Is Amilia Reubens wifes sister?”
“Holy shit–” Is all Jake can say as he steps out of Penny's car. He slams the door hard enough that it has Jaidyn craning his head in the direction of the thud. Jake points at the guy he wishes was six feet under, he's gritting his teeth harder with every stride he takes and soon enough his blood has reached a boiling point. “Amilia, give Odette to Bob, now.” Without so much as a second of hesitation, Amilia is walking towards Bob who she's never met before and handing the glasses clad Weapons System Officer the little girl who instantly clings to the familiar face. She's safe. “You're a dead man, you know that right?”
“Mama?” Dot’s sobbing in Bobs arms. Her tears soak into his flight-suit.
“You fucking whore you’re with him?” Jaidyn scowls at Amilia as she places Chase down on his two little feet beside Bob, he's holding Dot on his hip and Chase's hand as he stands beside him. Amilia just squares her shoulders.
“Well who the fuck else slashed your tires mate?” She says it in an isn't it obvious way.
“You Bitch!” Jaidyn doesn't slow down for anything as he lunges at Amilia. He slaps her so hard it rings in her ears.
“HEY!” That's all it takes for Jake Seresin to spring into action. He grips onto Jaidyns shoulder, swings him back before he’s balling his fist and landing a major right hook against his cheek. “YOU DON'T TOUCH HER! EVER!”
“Oh–!” Bob flinches at the sound, he shuts his eyes and turns himself and the kiddos around as Jaidyn falls to the ground in a heap, he's unconscious. One hit was all it took this time as Jake shakes his hand out with a growl.
“Oh my god what a fucking rush!” Amilia squeals, Jakes turning to her with shock in his eyes and a slack jaw. In seconds he's on her, cupping her cheeks and rubbing the pad of his thumb across the mark that's forming from the slap she took like a champion.
“You alright?” Amilia feels her heart skip a beat at Jake's touch. She's so caught up in his stunning emerald green eyes that she doesn't notice that his gaze has trailed down to her lips and back. “Amilia–” Jake doesn't know what hit him when Amilias lips were suddenly on his. There's police sirens heading their way but Jake cant do anything but kiss this amazing woman back. She’d saved his niece's life all because she was in the right place at the right time. She’d saved his ass from incarceration for being in the right place at the right time.
But Amilia Fisher never felt like she was in the right place at the right time.
Although Alimlia started the unexpected but cherished kiss, Jake was the one who broke it. Only doing so because he felt like his heart was about to burst through his chest. He’s never believed in love at first sight, but Amilia was making him question his beliefs.
“Who are you Jake, Jake Seresin and what have you gotten me into?” Amili smiled, biting her bottom lip as the police car finally pulled up to SunnySide Daycare centre for the second time that day. Jake simply smiled. His niece was safe with him, one problem down, one more to go. Now all that was left was to find out where you’d disappeared to.
“I work with your brother in law.”
***~***~***~***~***~***~***~
There's not much Bradley can do while he's in the ambulance with you, he just sits there watching as paramedics do their thing to stabilise you enough to wheel you up and out of the ambulance into the emergency department.
Everything moved in slow motion around him, as Bradley stood in the middle of the waiting room at the Miramar Base Hospital. He's been given a sheet to fill out on your behalf but as it turns out he only knows half the information they need him to fill out. He needs to call Jake.
With a heavy sigh and after having been standing there for ten entire minutes looking at the stupid icon of Jake's caller ID on Bradleys phone, he takes a seat and presses call–holding his phone up to his ear as it rings and rings and rings and rings. Until–”
“Rooster, I got her.” Jake's answering, he's strapping Dot into her booster seat in Pennys car all the while Bob chats with Amilia and Chase. Jaidyn’s in cuffs over the hood of the police car in the carpark screaming his lungs out. It's a whole scene, but nothing could bring Jake's mood down now, he'd won. That ass hat was done for, finally. “Sorry I kicked up at you before, you were right, someone had to–”
“Jake, I'm at the hospital.” Jake can tell by the tone in Roosters voice alone that he’d been crying. “I need you to meet me here because the nurses just handed me papers I can’t fill out because I don’t know Y/ns blood type and I don't know if she's allergic to any medication.”
“What happened?” Jake can feel his chest tightening as he stares down at Odette. She was tired, already falling asleep against her booster seat headrest. “What did that fuck ass do?”
“Cyclone found her.” Bradley explained as he looked down at his hands, your blood was all over them. He wanted to scream at the top of his lungs. “It's bad bro, can you just get here?”
“Rooster, what did he do?”
“Almost killed her man, exactly like he said he was gonna do.” That was Bradleys breaking point, he sobbed into the phone as he slouched in the world's most uncomfortable hospital chair ever. “She was tied up in the janitor's closet–” Jake's heart sank into his stomach as his knees buckled. “She was there the whole time we were looking for her.”
“Oh god–” Jake could feel himself letting go of the grasp he had on reality as his legs felt weak. “Fuck–”
“Jake?” Bob's voice broke through the haze. “Hey you alright?” He wasn't alright, not in the slightest bit.
“SHE FUCKING DESEVED EVERY SECOND OF IT SERESIN!” Jaidyn shouted as the cops cuffed his hands behind his back and led him into the back of the police car. “SHE'S A WHORE!!! SHE HAS IT COMING FUCKER!”
“Hangman, you want me to drive?” Bob asked as he watched whatever colour Jake had in his face drain. He was spiralling and spiralling fast. “What happened?”
“Jake, I need you to get here.” Everyone needed him. Odette needed him, you needed him, Bradley needed him. Jake couldn't take it, he couldn't breathe, he couldn't see, couldn't hear, couldn't think. Before he knew what was going on Bob had his phone and Amilia was leaning over him. Cupping his face, she was speaking but there was no sound. When did Jake end up on the ground? Had he passed out? The answer was yes, yes he had.
“Hangman?” You alright?” Amilia frowned as she felt Jake's forehead. “Fucking hell mate you went down like a sack of shit.”
“What happened?” Jake's groaning, reaching for his head as he sits up. “Holy shit I gotta get to the hospital, Y/n.”
“Woah, woah, easy easy– You hit your head pretty hard when you hit the deck.” Amilia explained as she helped Jake to his feet. “I'll take you over to the hospital, Bobs gonna take Odette and Chase back to my sister's house. She doesn't need to see her mum right now if she's not in a good way.”
“Yeah, yeah no that's probably a good call.” Jake mumbled as he rubbed the back of his head, letting Amilia lead him over to her car. “I'll call you later Bob, thanks man.” All Bob does is wave. He's got a back seat full of kids and a headache bigger than ever. It's been a long day.
There's an unanswered message on Bob's lock screen that had gone unnoticed while Bob and Jake were at the daycare centre. Bob just sighs in relief when he finally reads it, letting his forehead rest against the steering wheel as he turns the key inside the ignition.
Rhett: “I’ll be on the next flight out, don't say I never do nothing for you.”

it's a scream, baby! | hyunlix
chapter thirteen: ...to see what your insides look like
words: 1.26k // warnings: depictions of injuries, anonymous phone call
OFFICIAL GHOSTFACE KILL COUNT: 010
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
she didn’t stop pushing the bike to go faster until the house left her peripheral vision. changbin basically lived in the middle of nowhere, so she still had 10 or 20 minutes until she reached the town, but in her haste she had forgotten to check how much petrol was in the tank before taking off. she cursed loudly as the bike trundled to a stop, merely a mile and a half away from changbin’s home.
she knew that somewhere around the area was a shortcut into the town that didn’t involve trudging down the highway, and so she wandered aimlessly to find the path she so desperately needed in that moment. she had no idea if the intruder had followed her, and without the bike, there was no telling how fast they’d catch up to her. honestly, she had only walked for maybe 5 minutes before something caught her attention, whipping herself around with the gun raised in case it was the killer descending.
a gasp of shock left her lips as she realized that couldn’t be further from the truth - in reality, she had stumbled across a wrecked car, in the midst of some bushes at the outskirts of the woods. she inched closer, recognizing the car from somewhere. she definitely knew that car, but she couldn’t be sure where it was from. she had a sneaking suspicion building under her skin, but she didn’t want that to be true. it could be, could it? fuck… it was changbin’s car.
it was practically impaled on a tree, the front end completely crushed, and (y/n) could only hope that changbin had managed to escape the crash without any major injuries. but, of course, with the universe against her in that moment, as she got closer she saw a blood splatter across the inside of the windshield.
the glass was practically falling out of the windshield, shattered beyond repair and only adding to the effect of the dented and destroyed front end of the car. the airbags had gone off, which (y/N0 quickly noticed had changbin’s body resting on them. there was no way he would’ve survived a crash like that - blood pooling from his head, arm bend at almost an impossible angle. his legs would have been trapped under the steering wheel with the way the car had folded in on itself, and (y/n) choked out a sob at the sight. she wondered if he cried for help, or tried to escape. she wondered if he put up a fight, tried to escape his fate. she didn’t want him to have died thinking no one cared. she wanted him to know how loved he was, and how hard she would’ve fought to save him if she could.
merely a week and a half ago, she had taken all of her friends out for a meal. she insisted on paying, even when they tried to refuse, jokingly commenting on never knowing when the last time they’d be able to go out a eat together would be. god, how the world had a a cruel way of using irony. here she was now, most of her friends dead. all she had left was yeji - who was on the verge of a nervous breakdown, jisung - who had disappeared with no way of contacting him, and felix - oh felix, who seemed to vanish into thin air with only a trace of blood left behind.
(y/n) was a disciple of horror and slasher movies, and so knew that without vivid proof of a body there was no way of telling whether a character was dead or not. it was with this knowledge that she clinged onto the faint hope that jisung and felix were still alive, no matter how silly it sounded. she couldn’t lose them too, not now. not after she’d lost everything else.
she was so caught up in her own thoughts as she trudged down the road headed towards the town, that she screamed when he phone rang out loudly. she had completely forgot she had it, and answered without so much as looking at who was phoning, her mind only on one thing.
“lixie, is that you? or sungie, please. please, tell me its either of you–” she rambled, hand gripped onto the device like it was a lifeline. a dark, distorted chuckle came through the speaker, and instantly her stomach turned. oh god, not now….
“poor, poor, little, (y/n). lost all your little friends, huh? what a shame…” the voice tutted, the tone making her skin crawl.
“fuck you,” she instantly bit back, feeling anger rise in her body. “absolutely fuck you, you cretin. you’re disgusting.” the words were basically spat out, and she couldn't fathom why she was even entertaining such a phone call.
“oh angel face, such horrible words. bet you didn’t know i’m doing this for you, hmm? couldn’t have all those horrible men ogling at what’s mine, can i?”
“the fuck is that supposed to mean?”
“it means, little love,” the voice drawled, clearly getting off on drawing out the interaction. “you’re mine, (y/n). i never wanted to hurt you, i just needed to show you that you’re mine. those silly boys you kept around - they weren’t friends. they were just waiting for the right time to get in your pants, to defile my perfect angel.”
(y/n) scoffed, disgusted that whatever freak was on the other end of the phone could even fathom that as a good motive. “oh yeah? what were heejin, jinyoung, nari and areum? because i barely knew them. they sure as hell weren’t trying to ‘defile me’.” she knew that venom was dripping off of her words, and she just hoped it got the point across. the last thing she wanted was for the other victims to die for no reason, that would be even more awful.
the voice huffed, as if the question was an inconvenience, with no real need to be answered.
“lets call it collateral damage, hmm? but we have more pressing matters, angel. like your precious hyunjin, isn’t that right, pretty boy?”
she stayed silent for a second, confused by the words, until she heard a sickening crack - almost like a bone breaking - and an earth-shattering scream. hyunjin. he wasn’t dead after all.
but now wasn’t the time to dwell on that, what the hell was happening to him?
“don’t you dare fucking hurt him anymore, you asshole.” she spat, scowling as the killer simply laughed at her.
“better get your pretty ass back here then, hmm? because if not, well…. i might just trip and slit his pretty throat properly this time. and you wouldn’t want that on your conscious, would you?”
the killer couldn’t seriously be trying to spin this on her. telling her that her decision to run away or return to his trap would decide hyunjin’s fate? make her decide whether he lives or dies? that was next level fucked up, even for this guy.
“you’re insane. you’re crazy. you’re a psycho–”
“oh, well i’m not hearing any agreement. what if i let that pretty little head think on it, yeah? come back by midnight, or you’re the one who signed hyunjin’s death certificate.”
all she could hear in the background was hyunjin’s cries and pleas for her not to listen, not to risk her own life like that. but she knew what she had to do - she had to go back. call it a hero complex, or just basic human morals, but she wouldn’t let hyunjin die if she could stop it.

I dress hurriedly in the darkening of my room, not bothering to turn on a light as the sun dips below the horizon. I’m late because I almost didn’t go. But my position rather requires it so here I am.
I turn and look back at my rumpled bed. Still warm from earlier. Her scent still lingers in the air. I shake my head and force myself to step through the doorway.
Another interminable ball. I’m going because I must. But she will be there.
As I leave my room and stride down the hall, I tell myself that it won’t matter. I’ll ignore her. It won’t happen again.
But I know it’s a lie.
I can't even look my best friend in the eye anymore. He’s like a brother to me, he’s the one person who has always been there for me. And I’m sleeping with his wife.
Guilt claws through me as I enter the room and he greets me as he always does. Genuinely, warmly. He trusts me and that trust sends shame twisting through my chest.
Every time I swear it's the last time but then I see her, and I'm lost again. Drowning in desire and despair.
I've tried to end it. I have fought myself so long and so hard. I’m exhausted, defeated. Then there she is. It always ends the same. Me looking down at her. Her looking up at me with those bright eyes, total surrender written all over her face.
I hate myself for what I’m doing to him. To her. She drowns in guilt too, yet it doesn’t end.
I’ve tried to move on but there is no one else. Not for me. And not for him.
I slap my best friend on the back, avoiding eye contact as I struggle not to look for her….and fail.
She smiles that smile that I know is only for me and all my resistance falls away. I smile back. This thing between us. I love it and I hate it at the same time.
I love her. I hate myself.
I beg God for forgiveness every night. But I know I would resist it if an out was actually presented to me. I don’t want out. Not really.
I just want her. But not like this. I’d ask her to leave him, but I know she won’t. And I don’t really want her to. Because as fucked up as it sounds, we both love him. Which is why he can never know. Which is why it has to stop.
But as I take her in my arms on the dance floor, I know it will never stop. Because I’m weak when it comes to her.
This is how I know God has forsaken me. I love them both, but to give one what they need is to betray the other. So I persist in this state of sin from which I can never atone.
I dip her low on the dancefloor and whisper in her ear, “It’s over.”
She agrees.
But we both know it’s only a matter of time until the next time. I sigh as I pull her back up, hug her close to my body, and let myself believe the lie, just for tonight.
It’s over.

🏎️
I walked out of her room. I had a chance to talk with her, but that didn't go how I wanted.
Just when I thought that we were on the same page, talking about my regrets and that I still love her, she just pushed me away.
"What did I do wrong?" I frowned looking at the ground.
I walked through the corridors going outside towards the garden, needing time alone to think. For a moment I saw my Juliette, the one that used to place a band on my thigh and calmed me immediately. The one that smiled and all worries disappeared. For some minutes I had that woman back with me.
But it was just an illusion.
Julitte Morelli is no longer the little girl I fell in love with, she's no longer the next door neighbors' daughter that came to the same school I was, she's no longer the girl that came to cheer for me during all the karting races.
She's a different woman that had matured because I broke her heart. And I'll never forgive myself for doing that.
"Thank God you woke up in time" Carlos said walking towards me. "Pierre was searching you"
I turned around and looked at him. I don't know what shocked him the most, how red were my eyes trying to hold the tears or that I was a functional man after drinking god knows how many glasses of whiskey last night.
"Mate, are you alright?" he frowned, walking closer to me.
"I talked with her" I said, taking a deep breath, smiling weakly. "And… God. I just hurt her so much"
Carlos looked at me and his gaze changed. Again, he's looking at me trying to show his big brother instinct.
"At least now you know it" he sighed.
"No, no… You don't understand" I said shaking my head. "I read her notebook, her lyrics, her poems… She said she had a lover but in that notebook the only name there was mine"
"Well, good for her that she had a lover! She deserved it just after you fucked up everything" he frowned looking at me confused.
"She still loves me" I said. "She… God, how can someone like her, after everything I did… How can someone like her love me?"
I was questioning everything. Every choice I made came to my mind as a list.
The first contract with Ferrari. Sure, it was my dream. I was the second driver but I had Sebastian Vettel as my teammate. The best mentor I could even imagine.
Then Anthoine died. I fought hard that weekend to make him proud, even if that meant no sleep and study every previous race I could. That meant not sleeping with her in bed. First bad decision.
Then Ferrari showed me the contract of the first driver. Everything I ever wanted was in front of my eyes. Wrong, it was something I dreamed about and I promised her to accomplish it with her next to me. Second bad decision.
Being the first driver meant being a leader, fighting hard. I needed to spend more time on the simulator and on the headquarters, away from home and barely going to see my family and my girlfriend. Third bad decision.
I signed for more seasons with Ferrari, rejecting all the contracts other teams showed me promising things and warning me. I didn't believe their words, I defended my team with all my heart. Fourth bad decision.
I never leaned on her anymore, I got distanced and locked myself in the simulator room and did everything Ferrari told me to do. She showed me support and I never appreciated it. Fifth and worst decision.
But the worst decision I took was pushing her away, breaking her heart just because Mattia told me to do that. The worst decision I made was choosing Ferrari over her. Choosing a team that tortured me instead of a person that loved me.
"She hates me, Carlos" I sighed. "And she has every right to do that. I promised her so many things and broke all the promises"
"For example?" he asked me, leading me to sit on a bench that had views to the vineyard.
"That I would never push her away, that I would let her be by my side… That I would marry her" I sighed. "I even wrote it on the final lines of one of the songs she wrote. That promise sounds everytime I hear it, reminding me of that broken promise"
I saw Carlos nodding, taking a deep breath and crossing his arms. The moment I stopped coming to the paddock with Juliette he never asked what happened. He just stood there, looking at me.
"What happened?" he asked, leaning on the door of my room.
"Huh? With what?" I frowned looking up from my phone and leaving it on my lap.
"Did you leave her in Monaco? Is she sick or something?" he asked worriedly.
"Oh, no. She won't come back" I answered looking back at my phone. "We broke up last month"
He stood there on the door, looking at me, scanning me with his eyes. I didn't look worried, like it was the most normal thing on Earth. I mean, a break up is normal. But he knew that it wasn't normal with us. He knew that something was wrong.
"Just say whatever you want to say" I sighed heavily. "I know that all these years you had many things that you wanted to tell me. Go on"
"Just to resume everything… You are an idiot" he said, shrugging his shoulders. "Like, a big one. You were so selfish, so greedy. Just because you were in Ferrari, it didn't mean that you were the king. You are not Michael Schumacher, you are Charles Leclerc. You really believed that the nickname they gave you was your destiny"
I swallowed thickly hearing him talk. But I have to stay still, it was my turn to listen to him, to face the consequences of my mistakes.
"You turned down big opportunities just because you loved red" he said. "You never listened to the warnings, to the friendly comments. You kept defending a team that always let you down always blaming yourself for the mistakes"
"I know" I said, looking at my hands. "That's why I left, because I got tired of them"
"But you did that too late" he frowned. "And don't tell me that Ferrari was your childhood dream. Ferrari was the dream of everybody that was on the grid, only a few of us were lucky enough to dress in the red suit. But you took it too far, mate. You made unnecessary sacrifices for them. And now look where you are. It was about damn time that after all this years you faced her"
I sigh and close my eyes, letting my head fall down defeated. Yeah, it was about time that I faced her and confronted all my mistakes.
"But now it's too late, Carlos" I sighed. "Even if I recognize and accept my mistakes, she won't want me back"
"And you deserve that" he scoffed. "You deserve it for being so stupid ad blind"
"I know" I sighed.
I got up and took a deep breath, brushing my hair and looking inside the building. I have to talk with Valerie, the one that might know how to fix this.
I searched for her around, guessing that she would be somewhere here.
"Valerie… Can we talk?" I asked her once I found her, surrounded by a couple of her bridesmaids in her room to get ready.
"Is it urgent?" She frowned. "I mean… I have tk get the last things ready"
"Please" I sighed, holding the handle of the door. "It is"
She sighed and looked at all the girls around her, understanding the gaze she gave them and walked out of the room, making me move a little to let them pass by.
"What did you want to talk about?" she sighed looking at how I sat on a chair close to her.
"Just… About Juliette" I mumbled. "She will never forgive me, right?"
"I mean… You fucked up pretty bad" she shrugged her shoulders. "But maybe you two need to talk"
"I tried, actually" I sigh. "The first time went pretty bad and the second try… Just when I thought that we were talking peacefully she just pushed me out of the room"
"You know her, Charles-"
"No I don't" I frown. "The Juliette Morelli I met this weekend is not my Juliette, is someone else. And I know I made her like that, you don't have to remind me. I just… I don't know how to talk with this her right now"
"Try to sleep with her" she shrugged. "Make her jealous, mad… Whatever to get her attention. Just don't go to her trying to talk because she will get anxious and get her walls up"
"Are you crazy?! I can't sleep with her, not this way!" I exclaimed, like if I was offended.
"Then make her jealous" she sighed. "I know deep inside her she still loves you. You just have to take your Juliette out of this Juliette"
I took a deep breath and nodded. Make her jealous. Okay, maybe I can do that. Right? Maybe dance with someone at the wedding, talk with them while Juliette is near.
I can make her jealous too, right? Yeah, I can.
"Okay, yeah" I nodded. "Your sister is single? Maybe I can talk with her?"
"Stay away from my sister, you idiot!" she laughed.
I chuckled and nodded, getting up and hugging her. I have to get ready, the lunch will be soon and then after that I'll be too busy.
"Charles, can you come please?" Pierre sighed, calling me.
I nodded and walked towards him, frowning when I saw his worrying face.
"Don't tell me you are having second thoughts, please" I begged. "Because then I'm going to kill you"
"No! No, no, is that…" he sighed. "The string quartet that was going to play in the church… Well, there won't be a string quartet anymore"
"Fuck me" I groaned. "No fucking way! They just canceled on the wedding day!"
"Well… Talk with Juliette" he sighed. "Maybe she can sing?"
"Dude, no" I frown. "She's going to kill me if I do that!"
"Please? Just… God, I don't want Valerie to be sad! She had a list of songs she wanted to be played during the wedding! And there's just enough time for Juliette to try them!" he begged, making me sigh and nod.
"Okay, okay… Give me the goddamn list" I sighed. "Why the hell did they call you, by the way? I'm the one that organized that, I thought they were professionals''
"At least you didn't pay them yet" he shrugged his shoulders, sending me a text message with the list of songs. "That's what happens when you give a chance to someone that is a friend of a friend of a friend"
"Whatever" I signed. "They were friends of my piano teacher"
Pierre looked at me nodding, laughing.
"If you weren't my best man and all your songs weren't depressing I would have asked you to play at the wedding" he joked.
"Fuck you, mate! Those signs have many fans" I laugh punching his arm. "Well… I guess I'll go talk with Juliette… Wish me luck"
"Yeah, you'll need it" he joked, making me roll my eyes and walk out of the room.
"Fucking great" I groan.
I prayed that she was in her room just like before. I prayed that she would let me in even after she pushed me out of it.
"Juliette?" I sigh knocking on her door. "Juliette, I need to talk"
I heard rushed steps and then she opened the door. Her hair was wet, body wrapped with a silk robe. No bra. Fuck me.
"What you don't understand about me telling you that I don't want to talk with you?" she frowned.
"The string quartet won't come to the wedding. I need you to sing, or play the guitar or the piano. Whatever that makes music" I said nervously. "Just… Don't do this for me but do it for Valerie"
She looked at me and I felt little. I tried to breathe deeply, standing there in front of her.
"What songs?" she sighed and I felt myself smile a little. "And you better make sure that there's a guitar or a piano on the church after lunch so I can practice"
"Of course" I nodded. "I'll send you the songs… You still have the same number?"
"Yeah" she nodded and I took a deep breath. "Just give me times and I'll do whatever I can"
"I'm sure you'll do it amazing" I said smiling and I saw that she tried to not smile.
Just relax, please. Smile at me, Juliette. Let me see my Juliette.
"Thanks" she nodded. "I'll search the scores, I prefer if there's a piano"
"Yeah, okay" I nodded, sighing.
She won't smile at me anymore.

I took a deep breath after closing the door, then I heard the bell on my phone, making me sigh when I read the contact name I never changed.
Charles❤️: Guests entry something simple, whatever you can play on the piano is fine
Entry (bridesmaids and groomsmen first, groom with his mother and bride with her father): A Thousand Years, is around 5 minutes
For the exit Valerie wanted Wings by Birdy
I rub my eyes and brush my hair with my fingers. I'll let him in read, I really don't want to talk to him nor text him. But he kept messaging.
Charles❤️: I'll be on the church trying the keyboard
Just in case you want to come and try it by yourself
I groan and lock the phone, leaving it on the bed. Why did I never change his contact name?
I looked at the phone, the only source of light in the room. A week went by, and he didn't call yet.
"Maybe he's just busy" I mumble.
A week ago he broke up with me. A week ago he came to me and told me he wanted to break up, that we weren't working at all anymore, that I was distracting him.
Of course I didn't believe him. He's stressed with this season and needs to focus, maybe he just had a bad race and needed to get all his stress off with me so he said the first thing that came into his mind.
I waited days for a text, then the days became weeks, the weeks became months. I waited every hour for a text of him telling me that he misses me, that he loves me and that he regrets breaking up with me.
But that text never came to my phone. That text never showed up in my notifications, his name never came again.
I sighed, shaking my head, and got ready to get out of my room.
I wanted to go to the restaurant and eat lunch, I really wanted to, my mind wanted to go. But my legs and my heart had other plans, making me go to the church and accepting the fact that he was there, maybe alone playing the piano.
Music came to my ears when I was near the building, piano notes. He was playing, sitting in front of the keyboard with his eyes closed and fingers working all over the keys. It was a sad song, one that you want to hear whenever something is wrong, when someone hurts you.
"You improved" I said walking closer, trying to keep the sadness that song brought me.
"I'm a verified artist in Spotify after all" he said, stopping the music and looking at me with a sad smile. "It's all yours"
He got up and let me sit on the chair. Something deep inside in my heart wanted him to tell me why he composed a sad song, why he played it right now.
I just want answers.
I sigh and sit on the chair, trying the keyboard, playing the songs I'll play at the wedding.
How ironic it is that the song I would have chosen to be played at my dream wedding is the one I'll sing in my best friend's wedding and with the man that broke my heart, the one I wanted to marry, right in front of me.
"It's nice" I nodded, standing up and turning off the keyboard. "I guess I have to be earlier, just to warm up. See you later"
I started to walk away, but then he held my wrist, making me close my eyes and take a deep breath.
"Thank you" he said, and I just nodded.
"This is for Valerie" I said, moving my wrist away from his grip. "Don't get the wrong idea"
"You know that's not true" he whispered, trying to hold my hand. "Juliette, you know that we belong together-"
"Don't" I said, turning around. "Don't make me laugh, is not the right place to lie, you know? On a church" I scoffed, looking around.
"Juliette, please… Let me talk" he begged, those green eyes looking at me with anxiety.
"I don't want to talk about the things we've gone through, Charles" I sighed, closing my eyes. "There's nothing more to say"
"Juliette…" he sighed, and I just asked myself how many times he said my name this weekend.
"You know… I just thought that I belonged to your arms" I said, smiling weakly. "That you were home, that you would be the last person that could hurt me. But I was so stupid, a fool,an innocent girl in love"
I heard Charles taking a deep breath. I just want to let my anger go, all the anger in my heart wants to come out.
"I don't want to talk about this because it makes me feel sad" I whisper. "And I know you hate seeing me sad, so please. Leave me…"
"I was there" he interrupted me, taking me by surprise.
“What?” I mumbled.
"I went, I went to some of your concerts, I followed your award shows, I watched every movie you worked in even if I had to watch you making out with someone else that wasn't me! I was there but I couldn't be there! Because I was so afraid of what could happen, Juliette. I was afraid if someone saw us, if someone saw me. I even wrote on papers everything I wanted to tell you all those times, I still have the papers. I just… Please, Juliette… Let me talk"
