I didn't realize Jude Law was going to be playing Captain Hook in the new Peter Pan adaptation, and I'm actually somewhat interested in seeing it now. Do you think you'll like him as Hook? (Also, sorry if you've already posted about this before. 😅)

i was initially really excited about the jude law casting, because 1) i think he's a very good actor and he often plays appealing charmers - check and check, and 2) he's quite handsome. definitely at hook level if your tastes lay that way, and mine do. i was actually very excited about the entire cast -- sunny pawar has been my mental peter for eons, so i was thrilled that they cast someone of indian descent as peter pan, and bebe ever anderson would have made an adorable wendy -- but then the pandemic delay happened and both mains got too old for their roles. i grew increasingly less enchanted as more details came out about this production, not least when i saw this

at which point i realized that disney had thrown away their ace -- jude law handsomeness -- in favor of making hook as sexually unappealing as possible, which meant the director-writer ignored a few major og story elements and the rest of the production would probably suffer the same fate. nail in the coffin: per jude himself, he wanted his hook to be "scarred and gnarly and disgusting" which is just - NOT HOOK?? AT ALL?? even the asexual cartoon disney hook was still distinctly HOOK. jason issacs has already shown the world that a messy handsome elegant pathetic scary hook CAN AND SHOULD be done. this movie has no excuse for itself.

anyway. i'm not eager to give the time of day to a production that appears to have intentionally sailed right past the point. the last time i was this excited for a movie was the dakota johnson persuasion, which left me with PTSD; even knowing ahead of time that i'll be devastated, i'm not eager to go through that again (i was SO excited, y'all 😔). i've seen nearly every peter pan adaptation/prequel/sequel that exists, so i know i'll watch it someday - probably through my fingers - but i've got to fortify myself with about 100 watches of the jason issacs version first. a girl can only take so much.

Man, rewatching Pirates of the Caribbean and that part near the end when Jack finally shoots Barbossa and he just says;

“I feel…

“Cold.”

Is so impactful. Because earlier when Elizabeth is having dinner with him aboard the Pearl, and he comes around to say that he feels nothing, not the spray of the sea or the warmth of a woman’s flesh, but then, at this moment, after ten long years, he’s finally able to feel again, all he feels…is cold.

God, those first three Pirates movies were such good pieces of cinema, and I’m so sad that the ones that came after ruined it. I just love the dialogue between the characters, the constant use of leverage between them to shift whoever had the most power in any circumstance, how it all ties back to that one simple scene in the first movie, where Will uses a bench and leverage to spring Jack from the cell.

Also Barbossa and his witty lines are just so iconic. Everyone should rewatch the Pirates trilogy.

I love your take on potc characters and your headcanons for them. It’s just amazing. If it’s not a bother, I was wondering how do you think those characters would be as a parent? I mean we haven’t seen much parenting even for those that had kids in canon.

Ok so I actually have a few posts about this for James (hc)(hc)(hc) and Barbossa (fic) but! I can always expand. I also have one for Beckett (hc) since I'm obsessed with the idea.

Jack – Oh god. This is such an interesting question, because I firmly believe that Jack is actively against having children. He really and truly cannot fathom the idea of having kids of his own and being torn between caring for them on land where they can lead good lives and being at sea where he himself is happy. It’s a moral conflict he just can’t bring himself to face. His idea of what a child’s life should be like is shaped by his relationship with Teague and the ways in which he recognizes his own childhood lacked structure and support. He knows he can’t be the parent he needed when he was younger, and is thus against having children at all. If he were to have kids of his own, he would have to make the painstaking decision to leave them on land. A pirate ship is no place to raise a child; it’s dangerous and unpredictable. In his eyes, the best place for a kid to grow up is in a place of more stability, where they might have a better chance at finding a legitimate profession and keep themselves out of the trouble Jack has lived in his whole life. Rather than having biological kids, I can more see him acting as a sort of father-figure to a lot of young boys who end up working on the Pearl, teaching them the ropes and watching as they grow in their abilities and confidence.

Elizabeth – Elizabeth would be an interesting parent to have, for sure. I think her relationship with motherhood would be something very complex. For one, she has nothing to go off of, having had no mother of her own for most of her life. With her father gone, she can’t ask his advice, either. She’s such a fiercely independent and active person, too, that mothering may feel like an obstacle for her sometimes. That being said, I think she loves her children dearly and wants to do her absolute best for them. She teaches them all she knows—from proper behavior at formal functions to sword-fighting multiple enemies at once. She’s going to have the most well-rounded kids of all time, tbh. I’ve always kept this image in my mind of her showing up to a meeting of the Brethren Court with a kid just strapped to her front in a sling across her chest, and nobody says a damn thing. This also works as a method of volume control because nobody dares raise their voice and make the baby cry. I have an intrinsic need to see this happen, actually. I love the idea of her kids having pirate baby-sitters half the time when she needs to do something dangerous; Pintel and Ragetti act as honorary uncles, Barbossa as a granddad. Jack is the wine aunt. In all, her kids probably lead a kind of busy, chaotic life with people coming and going throughout their childhoods, but they have ties to an abundance of people who simply adore them.

James – The most devoted, doting father ever. James is terrified to mess things up as a parent, and is always worrying that he won’t be any good at it. He adores his children and has unparalleled dedication to them. He wants them to have a good scholarly education, something he never had, but if they choose the military over school, he’ll personally oversee as much of their training as he can. He’s a deeply caring father, too. Though not good at expressing his own feelings, he’ll do anything for his children when they need him. He wants them to feel safe when coming to him, something he could never do with his own father. He makes sure to spend quality time with his kids doing things that aren’t school or work, instead playing games or taking them out riding or reading to them. When the kids are young, he’ll take naps with them on his chest, holding them close. He recognizes that he may have to be absent for long periods of time due to the nature of his job, and it tears at him. His greatest fear is going to sea for months while his children are still relatively little and coming home to find that they don’t remember him. Thus, he works hard to be as present as possible while he’s home, wanting desperately to make a positive impact on their lives.

Will – Honestly, I feel like Will would make the most sane parent. After resolving things with his own father, he’s one of the people with the fewest daddy issues, and actually has a dad to ask questions of when he needs advice. Will feels like a very relaxed parent, not putting a lot of pressure on his kids. He was poor for most of his life, and though he wants better for his children than he had for himself, he also knows that happiness can be found working simple jobs. He’s very open to his children’s wishes and interests, and he’ll support them in pretty much damn anything. He definitely advises not becoming a pirate, though. Assuming the curse has lifted for him by the time he has children, he spends a lot of time with them. If it hasn’t, then he exploits loopholes and just has his kids come aboard the Dutchman as often as possible. He wants to be a presence in the lives of his children, and takes active steps to ensure it. I think he’s a little in awe as he watches them grow up, so impressed by all the things they accomplish, doing things he’d never even dreamed of when he was their age. He’s their number one hype man, too.

Beckett – I have…feelings about Beckett as a father. He’s not a particularly present one, given that he has zero knowledge on how to take care of kids. There’s a nanny, no question. He doesn’t really know how to properly bond with his children, but does ensure that they get the best education possible and that they have access to a wealth of resources. Especially as the children start to get older and enter society properly, he has a good time with them making snarky commentary about the social scene. Sass is the name of the game. Speaking of games, I do see him as the type to enjoy chess, and he feels a wave of pride whenever his kids beat him. He’s overprotective and possessive—he refuses to let his children suffer in fear as he did when he was their age. He has Mercer with them as a bodyguard whenever they leave the house. If anything happens to his kids, Beckett is not above having the person responsible killed. I think he has a certain terror of being alone, and though he’s not the best at socializing with his children, he never truly wants them to leave.

Barbossa – Hector is another doting father. He’s led a rough life, and though he doesn’t want that for his children, he’s not above taking them to sea when they grow old enough to sail. Before that, though, he leaves them on land with someone else, coming to visit every so often bearing gifts from all the places he’s been in the meantime. He can afford some degree of comfort for his children, too, and he certainly doesn’t spare that expense—if he can’t be there for his children, they’ll want for nothing else, dammit. Barbossa can’t give up his pirating ways to raise his kids on land himself, which is unfortunate, but the truth. If they do choose to go to sea, he takes them on as cabin-boys (or girls, he doesn’t give a fuck), and lets them learn and progress just like everyone else. I think he’d be happy to have them around, though a little concerned for their welfare. He knows better than anyone how dangerous a life at sea can be. Still, he isn’t too worried; he’s a realist if nothing else, and knows that there are chances for both good and bad. He puts effort into teaching his children and making sure they’re safe and cared for, but he’s a bit more hands-off than some of the others so his kids don’t feel like they’re suffocating. He lets them learn things for themselves, but makes sure they know they always have a (sort of) stable place to return to should they need it.

It’s been nearly five years, and I still feel very strongly about this subject. Lord knows I’ve tried my damndest to find peace, but alas! Jimothy continues to consume my waking thought!

It’s so clear that Jack Davenport was playing a character that HE’D been the one to write. James is so much more fleshed out and real than the majority of the very fun, and very trope-y cast. That’s not to say every other character is devoid of nuance (I am not talking about the sequels oh my GOD am i not talking about the sequels), but more to the point that the original script had James written as a mustache twirling, power-hungry, opportunistic secondary antagonist. I think they might have even drafted him to team up with Barbossa at one point (either that or I dreamed it in which case hell yeah original idea do not steal).

When Jack Dav showed up, the part evolved into something much more complex. Much more relatable. Much more HUMAN. Something reminiscent of a regency drama. And the audience has the benefit of SEEING it…while the other characters in the universe DO NOT.

We, the viewers, can know James is in love FRFR. Elizabeth doesn’t. And that’s a damn shame bcuz if the worlds best pirate hunter had been even a little bit more exciting and visibly interested in her as, you know, a person, I imagine he would have been a much more pleasing prospect for her.

When Elizabeth does finally see him in all his complexity, when she does finally understand the depth of his feelings, it’s too late. Or James believes so, at least. He likely had no intention of going with her. He likely had every intention of hanging for his treason. But he would do so knowing he’d tried to put things right.

James Norrington was so well-written he COULDN’T survive this narrative. There’s too much beauty in his tragedy. Too much poetry in his sacrifice. And…let’s be honest, fam. The writers were riding the wave of mid 2000s ‘lol random’ energy they assumed the audience loved about J*ck Sp*rrow and making a delirious cash grab in the process. This series wasn’t made to be art. They had no idea what to do with James after the second film.

Now, as for what I said about conforming being his end.

The reason he stands out to us, the reason he captures our hearts and imaginations, the reason we’re still talking about him nearly 20 years after his canonical death is also the reason he is as killed.

He was a goddamn Jane Austen hero in a goddamn Disney movie based on a goddamn theme park ride.

Oh I love this question! I have so many! I will make an official post about tropes in the future, but right now I'll focus on my favourites! (thank you for this question omg)

𝑹𝒆𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒑 𝑻𝒓𝒐𝒑𝒆𝒔:

𝐁𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐂𝐚𝐭 𝐱 𝐆𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫

I love this pairing because it's basically opposites attract, yin and yang, sun and moon. Two completely different people who can come together, despite their differences and decide that they love the energy of the other.

𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐃𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐬 𝐃𝐮𝐨

When two characters share one brain cell and cause absolute chaos wherever they go. It's exciting and funny and entertaining.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐳 & 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚 𝐀𝐝𝐚𝐦𝐬

I love how devoted Gomez is to Morticia. He would do anything for her, anything at all. And that's why this has become a trope - so many books written by women now have the main male love interest act in similar ways to Gomez - absolute devotion.

𝐃𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐬 𝐱 𝐎𝐡 𝐆𝐨𝐝 𝐈 𝐆𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐌𝐲 𝐃𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐬

When it's only one person who is a chaotic dumbass and the other is the voice of reason. Even when the dumbass character gets into the most trouble, their lover will rescue them no matter what.

𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝑻𝒓𝒐𝒑𝒆𝒔:

I know this is a really popular choice, but there's something about a character who goes against the grain, who rebels, but deep down has a good heart.

Pretty straight forward, double points if character is really innocent looking and seems like everything scares them.

We love a woman who knows what she believes in. Who cares about something so much that she is ready to risk it all to rebel.

Can be romantic, or just platonic. It also kinda ties in with the found family trope. I love the thought of two people caring so fiercely about the other that if anything happened they would go crazy.

I mean ... this is an easy one to love. But also it's really popular now. Which is completely fine with me. I guess it's my daddy issues coming into play?

I know! Another overdone trope, but god do I love it. The angst, the build-up, but knowing that they'll grow to love each other... just hits me in the best way. However, it has to be done right.

I know some people like the whole, 'I love you because I choose to', but there's something about soulmates that just ... AH .... tickles the right spots. It's like validation for their love.

Okay so... the only time I've seen this be done is in Pirates of the Caribbean 3: At World's End. It's during a fight scene and Will calls out to Barbossa to marry Elizabeth and him. It's one of my favourite scenes ever.

(To the mun) I'm not quite sure what we could find in the next POTC movie, but the point is it's very hard to believe that Davy Jones will return to us just like that. I mean...Since Sparrow killed Jones taking off his own heart and made Will Turner the future boss of the Flying Dutchman getting his own heart and gaven to Elisabeth Swann...How could Jones be able to return to us? Just curiosity and confusion with the cannon of all POTC movies, just all.

Well talking about the next POTC movie is reaaally frustrating if we're talking about it being in the works. Disney is being an absolute dumpster fire at the minute and they're considering doing a reboot which doesn't have Johnny Depp in it. And whether people like it or not, he is the face of the franchise. People are always going to watch POTC because of Captain Jack Sparrow! If Disney does make that reboot which might be likely, then it's certainly not going to do well at the box office.

There is no pirates without Johnny Depp!

Now I know that wasn't entirely the focus of your question and I'll get back to it since it's Davy centric XD.

Dead Men Tell No Tales was a pretty bad pirates movie, with plot holes and all sorts of canon breaking such as Jack receiving the compass not from Tia Dalma/Calypso as she says in Dead Man's Chest, but from a dying Captain which still rightfully pisses me off!

But the movie did give us the Trident of Poseidon that held all curses of the sea but then was later broken by Henry Turner which released Will from his duty as Captain of the Flying Dutchman, and Henry got his dad back and he, Carina and Will reunited with Elizabeth.

(Course this raises a whole load of questions because Will no longer has a heart so I don't understand how he's still standing and plus this yet again pissed me off because Davy could have done that all along and he could have been freed? I DON'T KNOW DAMN YE DISNEY)

But at the end of the credits, just like the previous movies there is post-credit scene which reveals Davy entering Will and Elizabeth's home and dramatically limping towards their bed as if to strike them with his claw. Will wakes up with a start, figures it was a nightmare and falls back asleep. BUT! The camera pans down and reveals a puddle of water with a bunch of barnacles in them, so that must mean Davy was actually there but he disappeared for whatever reason.

My theory goes, Calypso resurrected him like she did with Captain Barbossa (POOR HECTOR HE DIED AGAIN GOD DAMN YOU DISNEY) for a purpose. She's the only character in the franchise that has actually brought back someone from the grave, and so she's a likely candidate for bringing back Jonesy. And also, they were in love so maybe she's in some way forgiven him for what he did.

Since all the curses were broken, maybe a certain curse holding back a gigantic monster even bigger than the kraken from the deep, released said monster and Davy needs to grudgingly team with Jack, Will, Elizabeth, Henry and Carina to take it down. Or heck, maybe Beckett's and Mercer's ghost comes back and starts stirring trouble on the seas, and a ghost Norrington helps the heroes because we also need James in there too.

I don't know, lots of theories are in my head but Disney is most likely not going to make another POTC movie that has Johnny and the iconic main cast again by the way things look at the moment. But it's nice to stay hopeful!

I really, really reaaaally love Red Thread of Fate so far!! The way you manage to capture and build upon Grove’s character is just fantastic, and it’s just so in character it’s actually insane really wish I could write like that lol. Moving on. Mac is such an epic badass OC when she was introduced in the fic I remember reading it and being all ‘hell yeah’ because I guess it just seems so in character for Groves to have a relationship (eventually) with someone like that?? So yeah :D You’re doing god’s work by making a Groves/OC fic because my guy does NOT get enough recognition for being such a silly interesting character. Glad he’s finally getting some love!! (Also because he’s my like fav character in potc along with Norrington so yeah I love my Navy guys XD) looking forward to the fic as it comes yippee :DDDD

First off I absolutely also feel that same awkwardness when it comes to sending people asks, it's all good, I get it, you're golden 💜 and thank you!! That's so lovely to hear, I'm so glad you enjoy my writing! 🥹

I'm also thrilled Mac is going down well (or, uh, not at all in Groves' case) -- I always get nervous about introducing new OCs and she's a little bit spikier than past ones, but I did do a fair bit of glossing over the whole Anglo-Irish relation thing with Theorrington, other than how Theo was treated because of it (mainly because her and The Noz would never agree on it) so I don't want to repeat that with Mac. So she gets to be our resident angry Scot, I love her. Plus being Scottish means I'm more comfortable tackling that topic through her lens, rather than an Irish one.

That tangent aside, god it's gonna be so fun to deep dive into Groves from a romance standpoint. I think they also kind of flip the script that Theorrington goes by, too, since in their dynamic James is the straight man to Theodora's humour, whereas so far Groves has shown to be a bit more lighthearted than Mac, which will be a very fun dynamic to puzzle out.

But YEAH honestly the second the thought of "the OC should be a pirate" hit my brain I was like

It just had to be done, he'd give big this energy:

He'd know he should disapprove, he would disapprove on some level, but he'd also have to grapple with just finding her painfully attractive while she does crimes. With the added boon of like, she's much more of a Jack than she is a Barbossa, so she's not a monster. Just a ✨criminal✨ - plus with all of the potential for worry, later on down the line, it's just beautiful. So many possibilities.

Ngl, but reading (listening) the "a dragon without its rider is a tragedy, a rider without its dragon is dead" after seeing so many tiktoks about it and them being all epic, has me giddy, has me excited. Here we go.

So far we have a cunty yet caring elder sister, a dead dad, a rude as fuck mum, a dead brother (who apparently was beloved above all) and a girl severely lacking in calcium.

I cannot judge Violet for wanting to take her books with her....but babygirl from what I have seen you truly have no strength.. so like..sugar.. either develop some muscle or like let it go.

She looked at me still smirking. She started kissing my stomach and scars on it. It felt good I have to say. I took her chin with my fingers and pulled her into a kiss. We were kissing for two minutes when we pulled away for some air. She looked me into eyes and I think I stopped breathing for a moment.

"I love you Elizabeth" I said.

"I love you too, babe".

She started kissing my neck and shoulder after two seconds she got to my boobs started kissing them too. I took her and rolled us so now Im on top of her. She looked confused but than smiled.

"I can't take all pleasure. You just relax m'lady"

I kissed her and started going down while unbuttoning her night dress but then I heard Jack and Barbossa yelling at eachother.

"Oh my God really?? They are fighting at this time?!" I said and got up to dress myself.

Elizabeth also lost interest in our private time after she heard them fighting. We went outside to see what is happening.

"WHY ARE YOU TWO FIGHTING?!?!" Elizabeth yelled at them

They looked at her and started laughing.

"Miss Swann did we stopped you from dressing yourself this morning or did you had a good time with our mate (name)??" Barbossa asked.

I looked at Elizabeth and saw that her night dress was open so they can see her boobs a little. I ran to her and covered her and we went back to room to dress her. Jack and Barbossa were joking about that thing for too long.
