still thinking about the fact that even though she was fully immersed in her villain arc, giselle was still giselle. she can't make a convincing or actually scary insult. she preens at compliments from malvina even though they're sarcastic because she doesn't notice it's sarcasm. she's still full-on andalasian princess whimsical even in the middle of their duel, turning weapons into butterflies. giselle's stepmother-queen evilness is nothing compared to nerissa's stepmother-queen evilness in the first film and that's because even if it's against her own wishes, even with a fairytale life, giselle was never meant for that. she left that behind when she fell in love with a life with robert and morgan.

Lay awake last night thinking of the similarities between Barbie (2023) and Enchanted (2007)
Both movies feature a mixture of nostalgia and self-parody
Barbie and Giselle are forced to leave their idealised fantasy worlds for the real world (Giselle is literally pushed while Barbie is given the illusion of choice)
They struggle to fit in at first, but in the end they both choose the messiness, complexity, and freedom of reality over returning to their fantasy land
They realise that they don't actually want the guy they're 'meant' to be with
They're helped by a parent and child*, and after causing them a bit of trouble, help them to grow closer as a family
They help a cynical character (Sasha, Robert) to embrace childlike joy again
*The roles are kind of reversed between the two movies. In Enchanted, the child is interested in fairytales and wants to help Giselle, while the parent is initially cynical and reluctant, whereas in Barbie it's the other way round. (Morgan in the sequel has more in common with Sasha, but that's getting off topic)

The ball scene in enchanted where everyone has dressed up in classical outfits except giselle who is the only one with a normal look which represents how much she's changed and the fact that robert is wearing the exact suit Gisele made in the beginning when she was imagining her how prince would look like showing that robert is her true love and when they dance together it's very magical and full of love then robert starts singing, not a musical number, he sings just for giselle after mentioning that he doesn't dance and sing earlier as their previous lovers sadly look at them knowing full well that they had lost them but still make the final effort to bring them back so nancy and robert start to dance but it's so stiff and lifeless as edward and giselle leave but she sadly looks at them?

I was thinking about whether or not Enchanted (2007) would pass the bechdel test, and obviously it wouldn’t (since every female character just talks about Prince Edward or Robert) but then it occurred to me that if there was a male version of this test, it would fail that too because every guy in the movie won’t shut his hole about Giselle and I think that it should pass the Bechdel Test because of that

As much as I think the teenager/stepmother conflict was cliché, derivative, and even a little lazily done, one thing I appreciated was that Morgan doesn't straight up hate Giselle. It's clear from her interactions in the first part of the film that she genuinely loves her mum, and sees her as her mum when she calls her that, she just also finds her frustrating at times. Which I like. You often don't tend to get those in these kinds of tropes.
It does, however, make the inevitable "you're not my mum" moment feel... jarring? I get she was pissed, but idk, I feel there were better ways they could've gone about it.

This is not my usual content, but I just finished Disenchanted, the new Enchanted sequel, and I was so so so disappointed with it and as someone who loves the original I want to express that.
Enchanted was a childhood classic for me, one of my favorite movies it was so good and clever, and the songs were so good. This just feels like a sad knock-off.
The most disappointing thing to me though was the animated segments that were meant to mimic the original. It looked phenomenally bad, and that is either due to a limited budget or no time for the animators, so please don't blame the animators for this. The heads of this project just did not care to make these parts look good and it shows.
Just save your time, watch the original again if you want that nostalgia. Don't watch Disenchanted.

Enchanted is my favorite Disney movie. Ever. And I have been waiting for the Disenchanted official announcement since September last year.
The premise sounds great. Giselle upset with how her relationship with Morgan has turned after moving makes a wish for their lives to be a fairy. However she neglects to realize that in fairytale the stepmothers, which she is, are wicked.
I'm concerned about the baby. Now to be fair I don't know if they'll play an important role beyond being the reason the family had to move.
It's just babies due to their lack of most qualities necessary to make a full character, mostly act as objects within a plot, resulting in stories that tend to be incredibly grating and played out.
I don't want to get too deep into it. I just have some concerns. I feel like most of you understand what I'm trying to explain.

Ironic how enchanted is popular for breaking cliche fairytale tropes and actually having a unique storyline yet it's sequel is the most generic family movie you've ever seen
