Brazilian Air Force puts Gripen E into operational service
The Brazilian Air Force (FAB) held a ceremony on Dec. 19, 2022 at the Anápolis Air Base (BAAN) marking the beginning of operational activities of the Gripen E fighters (referred to as Gripen F-39 in Brazil) by the First Air Defense Group (1st GDA).
This important customer milestone follows the flight test phase in Brazil that started in September 2020 with the arrival of the test aircraft in the country, and which were conducted at the Gripen Flight Test Center (GFTC) located at the Embraer plant in Gavião Peixoto.
“The start of operational activities with Gripen E by the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) is an extremely important day. It marks the beginning of a new operational era for FAB but also is the result of years of hard work done in partnership with the Air Force and with our Brazilian industry partners: Embraer, AEL Sistemas, Akaer, Atech, and our own subsidiaries in Brazil,” said Saab’s President and CEO Micael Johansson in a company press release.
At the event two Gripen fighters made a presentation flight led by FAB pilots Lieutenant Colonel Gustavo Pascotto, Commander of the 1st GDA, and Lieutenant Colonel Ramon Lincoln Santos Fórneas. The Brazilian pilots carried out their training with Gripen E in Sweden. They also practiced for today’s flight on the mission trainers, which are installed at the Anápolis Air Base.

Two more F-39E Gripen fighters arrived in Brazil today (09/25) that will strengthen the fleet of the Brazilian Air Force (FAB).
The third and fourth FAB F-39E fighters (FAB 4103 and FAB 4104) manufactured in Sweden are part of a first batch of 36 jets ordered. A first prototype fighter arrived in Brazil in 2020 and is in Brazil together with Embraer for testing and improvements.
The multipurpose ship Minervagracht that is bringing the two new fighters docked today at the Port of Itajaí, very close to the Ministro Victor Konder International Airport of the city of Navegantes, with displacement from the pier to the hangar made by land, where the fighters will be towed by a street.

The Dutch ship Minervagracht is from the same company that transported the first two Gripen E fighters in April this year.
The transfer from the port to the airport should be made in the early hours of Sunday to Monday so as not to disrupt local traffic.
After preparation at the airport, the two jets must go to Gavião Peixoto, a city near Araraquara, in the interior of São Paulo, where the headquarters of Embraer Defense and Security and the facilities of the Gripen Flight and Test Center (GFTC) prepared by Saab do Brasil are located.

The F-39E Gripen fighters are expected to start their first operations at the Anápolis Air Base in November/December 2022.
A total of 36 fighters were ordered in 2014, at a cost of 4.5 billion dollars (R$ 23 billion), providing for the transfer of technology, with the construction of part of the units of the lot being carried out in Brazilian territory. An additional purchase of a second batch of 4 jets has already been confirmed in April this year and a negotiation for a third batch of 26 fighters is underway.
Two additional F-39E fighters are expected to arrive in Brazil by December this year. The 36 jets of the first batch are expected to arrive in Brazil by 2027.

The first two series-produced Gripen E fighters arrived at the port of Navegantes (SC) last Friday (01/04) and were transported by land to Navegantes International Airport in the early hours of Sunday (03/04), where they will undergo preparations before taking off towards the Gripen Flight and Test Center (GFTC), at Embraer's plant in Gavi
In December 2013, Saab was selected to participate in the last phase of the F-X2 program, which aimed to replace the fleet of fighter aircraft of the Brazilian Air Force (FAB). In October 2014, after all the competition processes, Saab and the Brazilian Government signed the contract for the development and production of 36 Gripen E/F aircraft, including systems, support and equipment.

In 2015, Saab started the Gripen technology transfer program, one of the largest ever carried out for the Air Force and the largest ever made by Saab to another country. The program aims to provide the practical knowledge necessary for the execution of various activities of development, production and maintenance of fighter jets in Brazil. By 2025, more than 350 Brazilian engineers and technicians from partner companies will have participated in theoretical and practical training at Saab in Linköping, Sweden.
To date, approximately 300 Brazilian professionals from Saab partner companies have already been trained and are back in the country. Most work at the Gripen Design and Development Network (GDDN), located at Embraer's plant in Gavião Peixoto, and at Saab's aerostructure plant in São Bernardo do Campo, both in São Paulo.
As part of the technology transfer program, in 2018, Saab presented its plant in São Bernardo do Campo, designed to carry out the assembly of Gripen's aerostructures. Two years later, the unit added other support services to the defense and civil market. In addition, it is on site that the maintenance of the radars and electronic warfare systems of the F-39 Gripen will be carried out.
The first Gripen E arrived in Brazil on September 20, 2020 to carry out the in-flight rehearsal campaign in the country at the GFTC. The activity is fully integrated into the testing program that has already been underway at Saab in Linköping, Sweden, since 2017. Activities in Brazil include tests on flight control and air conditioning systems, as well as tests on aircraft in tropical weather conditions.
In December 2021, Brazilian and Swedish authorities participated in a high-level event in Sweden to present the first six series-produced aircraft that left the factory and entered the delivery phase. On the occasion, delegations from both countries also had the opportunity to discuss the joint activities that will be beneficial to the Gripen E Program

PRIMEIRO CAÇA GRIPEN COMPRADO DA SUÉCIA CHEGA AO BRASIL DE NAVIO E DESEMBARGA NO PORTO DE NAVEGANTES
O primeiro avião da Caça Gripen, comprado da Suécia para reaparelhar a Força Aérea Brasileira, chegou ao Brasil no último domingo (20). Hoje (22), ele deixou o porto de Navegantes (SC), por via terrestre, até o aeroporto da cidade. No local, a aeronave passará por verificações técnicas antes de alçar voo até a Embraer, em Gavião Peixoto (SP), para dar continuidade aos testes no Brasil, no Centro de Ensaios em Voo do Gripen (GFTC, do inglês Gripen Flight Test Center). Na Suécia, ele já passou por diversos testes realizados pela Força Aérea Sueca, pela SAAB, construtura do avião, e por diversos pilotos brasileiros, que estão treinando para comandarem os caças. São treinos para conhecer o avião e também para simular emergências, como ejeção e pouso na água, em diversas circunstâncias.
Para lembrar, a empresa sueca Saab entregou à Força Aérea Brasileira (FAB) o primeiro dos 36 caças Gripen comprados pelo governo brasileiro em 2014, na cidade de Linköping, na Suécia, e contou com a presença do ministro da Defesa, Fernando Azevedo, do comandante da Aeronáutica, tenente-brigadeiro Antonio Carlos Moretti Bermudez, e de autoridades brasileiras e suecas.O caça foi submetido e aprovado em uma série de provas a fim de constatar que está à altura das expectativas contratuais. Um primeiro voo experimental foi realizado em agosto deste ano. Foi um voo inaugural de cerca de uma hora que serviu para os engenheiros e responsáveis avaliarem o manuseio básico, o comportamento do caça em diferentes altitudes e velocidades e o funcionamento dos sistemas operacionais.
Parte das aeronaves restantes serão montadas completamente em território brasileiro. A montagem dos caças no Brasil é parte do programa de transferência de tecnologia que, além de razões financeiras, motivou o governo brasileiro a escolher o modelo sueco, em detrimento dos concorrentes norte-americano (Boeing) e francês (Dassault). O contrato prevê a cooperação industrial (offset) para o desenvolvimento e produção das 36 aeronaves Gripen dos modelos E (monoposto) e F (biposto). Segundo a Saab, mais de 350 brasileiros, entre engenheiros e técnicos, participam ativamente do programa de transferência de tecnologia, incluindo temporadas na Suécia para receber treinamento. Além disso, em 2016, o Centro de Projetos e Desenvolvimento do Gripen foi inaugurado junto à unidade da Embraer de Gavião Peixoto, no interior de São Paulo. No centro, engenheiros brasileiros e suecos trabalham conjuntamente para desenvolver o projeto. A previsão é que, se tudo correr bem, as 36 aeronaves sejam todas entregues até 2024.
