Hi everyone. If you are in America, or near the American border on the east side of Canada, please get your polio booster if you can, or the polio vaccine if you didn't get it as a child.
Polio has been found in the NYC waste water.
Polio is more infectious than the alpha variant of covid was, and more infectious than the flu.
While 75-90% of people who contract it will not show symptoms, they are still contagious.
Polio causes a variety of symptoms like partial or compete paralysis, lifelong muscle pain and weakness, and/or viral meningitis.
There is no cure for polio. Only prevention and then management of the symptoms.

i will not correct all the virology/vaccinology misinformation in that post. I will not correct all the virology/vaccinology misinformation in that post. I will go outside and look at the sky and have peaceful thoughts and leave them to be wrong. i am capable of this

just saw the world's Take Of All Time:
"calling something 'illegal code' makes you sound like a cop."
it was a conversation about ransomware.
i work for a medical research lab. ransomware took out our servers for more than two weeks while we were working on the covid vaccine. crunch the math on how many people die of covid each day and then look me in the eye and say that hacking can't be a violent act.

we have a client at work whose "type" is like black pitty mixes (she keeps getting them) and she came in w one the other day and my coworker was like "that's great cause there's that black dog syndrome" and the client was like "oh yeah i have that i love these black dogs" and my coworker was like "no it's about how black dogs are way less likely to get adopted in general" (i added "black cats too") and the client was like ??? WHAT???? FOR REAL??? i love that she's so obsessed w her (gorgeous, well behaved) dogs that she couldn't even conceive of a world where people didn't like them

edamame is a bop but i think my favorite part about that song is that i have no idea what bbno$’s lyrics mean and that, according to his genius interview, he also. apparently. has no idea what they mean.

Well, telling my IRL friends went poorly, so I'm gonna shout into the Tumblr void that there's a brand new COVID booster and you should get it as soon as you can, to protect yourself and your community.

I don't know for whom of my followers this is relevant, but I'm down with the flu (despite all precautions!) and thus won't be able to post Chapter 5 of Thousand Spotlights tonight.
A week ago, when I read the chapter for some final edits, some things about it felt not quite right, but as I had to think through my ideas first, I postponed a more thorough revision until Four Continents was over aka yesterday. Unfortunately, I already wasn't well but I hoped I would feel better today as I attributed my symptoms to migraine and exhaustion. However, I'm not better today at all and definitely not in shape to coax my brain into doing the kind of cognitive work fixing those issues demands.
Vitya's story is very precious to me and recently, it gained a small audience / I learned that there are actually some people reading it (I have no idea for how long they have been around). I want to post only the best version of each chapter I can squeeze out and I need to be in a condition that allows me to use my brain properly. I feel like I owe this to myself and this story's readers (and to Vitya)
I will post Chapter 5 next Monday in order to keep at least the weekday consistent and to make sure that I will have enough time to make the improvements.
The next chapter of Can You Hear My Heartbeat will very likely still go live on Wednesday night as I only have to put it on AO3 and write some chapter notes.
I apologise for the short notice. Some things are just cursed, I guess.

Reminder: Vaccines are safe and effective
I went to the pharmacy today and when I go to the pharmacy, I know: I will always have to stand in line. This morning there were 3 people in front of me. A was getting a covid booster. B rolled her eyes and turned around and C immediately started in and gossiping about how dangerous the covid vaccine is, and C was like "I've been in fb jail so many times for spreading the truth about it". (There conversation was honestly so incoherent after that, it was like talking to my parents, no linear or logical throughline other than "the government is lying to us thank god for fb" etc.)
All I wanted to do was check instagram until it was my turn to pick up my prescription.
I didn't say anything to them. Because there is literally nothing I can say to change their mind. They'd just double down. And I only have so much energy.
But all the evidence shows that vaccines are safe and effective. If that evidence were to change, if medical professionals were to change their stance, I would too. The ability to receive and evaluate new information is so important.
But doctors have been inoculating folks against deadly and damaging since the late 1700s. Vaccines have changed a lot since the 1700s because we've learned A FUCKING LOT since the 1700s.
VACCINES. ARE. SAFE. AND. EFFECTIVE.
Thank goodness I was wearing a mask.
Wear a mask. Get your shots.
