In which, there was a legend of Barbatos and his former lover, but only a certain bard remembers it.

Aether and Paimon stared at the stone by the Windrise statue, attempting to decipher the meaning of it.

“Here lies the one most faithful to me. Throughout heaven and earth, they alone, were the honored one.”

“Throughout heaven and earth.. they alone were the honored one? What is that supposed to mean? It can’t be Venti, because he’s still here... And he never mentioned anything about his friend being buried at Windrise.” Paimon wondered, a hand on her chin.

Aether nodded, also curious to what the headstone meant.

Suddenly, a branch snapped behind them, causing them both to turn around, alert.

“Whoa, whoa! Traveler, Paimon, what are you doing here?” A smiling bard greeted them, lyre vanishing into thin air as he walked closer.

“Hi, Venti! We were just looking at this headstone! We come here often, but we never really noticed it. Do you know whose grave this is?” Paimon spoke, floating closer to the bard.

Venti’s expression grew sad for a split second, before putting on a smile that didn’t reach his eyes. “Of course I do! Have you ever heard the tale of the Princess and the God?”

“The Princess and the God...? What a lame name... But no, we haven’t! Tell us, tell us!” Paimon shouted, Aether nodding his head to agree.

“Of course, Traveler.”

And so, he began.

Long ago, an almighty god fell in love with the princess of a faraway land named Khaneri’ah. Whilst the nation didn’t truly have a hierarchy, she had treated everyone well, and helped even when she couldn’t take care of herself.

And so, she was the leader of them.

One day, suddenly, the God of Freedom descended onto Khaneri’ah.

But Khaneri’ah was a godless nation, and he wasn’t welcomed. Only one didn’t turn him away, and instead welcomed him to rest until he continued his journey.

That person was the princess.

While Barbatos had nobody else, the princess was with him, and he ended up extending his stay much, much longer than a couple months.

Inevitably, he fell in love with her. And when he finally confessed, he was overjoyed to find that she returned his feelings.

They were supposed to live happily ever after. That’s how the stories go, right?

How badly he wished that had happened. But the God of Time didn’t wish it to be so.

When the God of Time discovered Barbatos’ relationship with the girl, she was infuriated. Gods were immortal beings, and weren’t supposed to let themselves get attached to such things.

And so, the destruction of Khaneri’ah was ordered.

The city fell into ruins, and Barbatos had no control over his own actions. When he finally came to, he was terrified to look down in his lap, and see his love barely alive.

Hanging on by the thinnest thread, she smiled, and uttered the words,

“It wasn’t your fault. It never was, my love.”

And her body grew limp, chest stopped heaving, hand on his cheek grown cold.

The last thing Barbatos clearly remembered, was her cold hands on his cheeks, faces inches away from each other.

The princess and the God.

-The sound of your voice

-Ingrained it into his memory so he’ll never forget how it sounds

-Every word you say sounds like a poem or song to his ears. Will talk with you endlessly just to await your reply and listen to your thoughts delivered by your lovely voice

-Whisper in his ear and he’ll compose a marriage contract on the spot

-Your laugh

-Loves hearing the people of Mondstat laugh with joy, each person’s laugh is unique. Thus, yours is extra special

-The first time he made you laugh it was like the whole world stopped momentarily, he needed to hear you do it again

-Venti’s eyes always glow with a playful and mischievous glint, but when you laugh, if you catch the ever so slight change, they glow with a real softness. Gentle and full of nothing but pure love
