the thing that struck me hardest about this cutscene was how warm zhongli's light felt. after all of the feelings we had to go through- having to watch xiao suffering over and over, having to watch him repeatedly sacrifice himself until his strength finally gave out- the colors, the music, the overall vibe of the scene just. felt like a hug.

Note: My compensation for the soul punching archon quest, so spoiler alert for 2.7
Soft lips brush against his own, gently, lingering; savouring every little touch, every little sensation. Almost delicately, afraid that if you pull away for even just a second, you’ll lose him.
“Breathe…”
Xiao’s hand on your waist tightens a little, as if to get you back to consciousness. “Y/N, breathe,” he murmurs softly.
You pull back a little, looking somehow dazed down upon his golden eyes that are mustering you with such tenderness in them your heart wrenches.
After the recent events in the chasm - being trapped somewhere between time and space, the illusions, …Xiao’s sacrifice for all of you – it is safe to say that you didn’t leave his side for some time after that.
In fact, neither did he.
Therefore, today you’ve contrived to wander down the path near Wangshu Inn; even if it would be just for a couple of hours, you wanted to spend this time with him, focus on what you have, treasure what you nearly lost.
You’ve chosen a somewhat tranquil spot near the water, to settle down for a while. Both of you lying on the soft grass, your elbow supporting your body as you try to focus on Xiao’s eyes that are looking up to you now.
He lifts his hands to brush some strand of hair behind your ear. “Your heart is racing too fast.”
You chuckle lightly. “Can you blame me?”
Your eyes travel over his features; from the gold of his eyes, over the darksome skin beneath them to the still not yet completely healed wounds on his cheek and around.
“Why are you looking at me like that?”
Gently you lean down a little to place a kiss on his wounded cheek. “I’m just glad you’re here,” you mumble, giving him half of a smile.
Xiao eyebrows furrow. “If it’s about what happened in the chasm- “
Again you bend down to kiss him, this time, though, on his lips, surprising him a little. But nevertheless, he responds almost immediately.
You try to savour this feeling, to remain in this moment with him, you really do, but your mind keeps bringing back short and sharp images from the day before. Especially the crucial moment when Xiao decided what he had to do. The determined look on his face, the sheer panic you felt when the anemo barrier appeared, and you tried to reach for him, to stop him, to do anything - but he was already gone.
Or rather, you were already gone while Xiao was facing his verdict, swallowed by the darkness beneath. The horror when you realized what had happened, what you lost without even the chance of a goodbye.
You hold him even closer now, kisses turning somehow longer and relentless, feeling every despairing emotion.
At some point Xiao feels sudden wetness upon your cheeks, unconsciously some tears have slipped out of your eyes.
Right away he is sitting up, pulling you with him so you are now sitting face to face. Xiao tilts his head a little, clearly shocked when he realises what effects his past actions still have on you.
“I can’t completely comprehend your demeanor,” he admits and cups your face with his hands, brushing away the tears. “Everything turned out fine, didn’t it?”
“I almost lost you. Of course I’m a little emotional.”
A line appears between his brows, while he studies your face. “This is my purpose - to protect. It always was and always will be. No matter the consequences.”
You press your lips together, an icy but burning feeling forming in your chest. “Xiao…,” you say softly. “You think you’re doomed to die in the place of someone else, that it’s an honourable way to go by sacrificing yourself – weather it’s for Liyue or the people you cherish most. But the people who cherish you, who love you, they don’t want you to go. Especially not that way.”
You lean forward, enough so your foreheads are touching. Then you take a deep, somewhat shaky breath. “I know this mentality is widely established in you, but… Xiao, I couldn’t live a life without you in it. I couldn’t imagine – I don’t want to imagine it.”
You feel his kiss against your forehead, causing you to close your eyes in devotion; then he bends down to meet your lips.
Xiao isn’t particularly a man of words, moreover for him, no right words exist to express his emotions, his sentiments. Or maybe it is also because both of you know, that in the end his mindset would remain, nonetheless.
Arms wrapped completely around him you hold him close to you, feeling the warmth of his skin, the beating of his heart.
“I love you so much. I hope you know that,” you mumble, brushing your lips together, lingering for another moment.

the characters in the 2.7 archon quest mirror the elements of the fallen yaksha but other details I noticed:
yelan vs itto at the beginning….it was the hydro yaksha who killed the geo one…
yelan and yanfei being so close - just as the pyro and hydro yaksha seemed to be…
shinobu chastising itto and his more silly behavior - reminds me of the geo yaksha sort-of chastising the electro yaksha’s antics and trying to get him to wear more regular clothes - elements just switched - geo yaksha did seem more on the lighthearted side tho, maybe more like itto than we know. bosacius and the geo yaksha could resemble itto. remember how bosacius always announced himself? reminds me of “itto the ONE AND ONI ARATAKI-“
and the way they all worked together so seamlessly in the final cutscene, protecting each other despite probably not having too many opportunities to be in battle with each other
this quest was actually so much more thought out than I realized I cry xiao must have been reliving so so much from his past. when he sacrificed himself…maybe somewhere in his mind it felt like a second chance to save his family, even though he knows it’s not really them. to save them (the representations of them) the way he couldn’t before and then join them in the afterlife. and these ones…they have their own xiao, the traveler, there for them in his eyes, who does want to live for a better future the way xiao didn’t hope for during the wars. god xiaoooooo 😭

Even now I feel like 2.7 is my favourite genshin update
Not only does it feature best ship ever xiaolumi, it had an interesting plot, lovely character interactions between seven different yet whole people, writers who know to to frickin write Paimon well, and lore and story beats for Xiao
Sure it has the genshin problem of exposition that is way to boring and long to read but it’s just so nice, the idea of these seven people working together and six of them trying to make sure Xiao doesn’t become a martyr (someone get this guy to a therapist)
The puzzles were really cool and well designed, the combat didn’t feel too hard, the cutscenes were AMAZING and really helped the characters come together. I do wish they didn’t just take Itto out of the plot for awhile but eh that’s my only story gripe

warning! spoilers ahead - do not interact if you haven't played the latest archon quest. this is also not proofread so read at your own risks.
—during 2.7 perilous trail archon quest, i really thought xiao was gonna die. i had so much i want to say to xiao for doing what he did or even suggesting his sacrifice in the middle. i totally side yelan's view. i had to write this.
when she called his name, Xiao half expected to find her in a perilous situation, possibly swarmed by evil demons or hanging off a cliff. His jade spear was already in his hand, the muscles in the same arm tensing for a battle and the fierce glint his eyes wore had a protective flame in them.
instead, Xiao found himself standing inside a small lit cavern, eyes alert to every inch of the space. for a bone-chilling second, he almost believed they were back at the Chasm once more until his eyes met the gaze of the moon outside the little opening behind him.
understanding and relief dawned upon him when he confirmed they were not in that unforgiving depth they narrowly escaped weeks ago.
checking that there were no signs of danger, the polearm in his hand was put away, dissipating as he was left standing over a dancing flame, staring in puzzlement at the sleeping figure across him.
his silent, steady footsteps followed him as he stepped around the makeshift fire, dropping down to a knee to catch the murmured words fumbling out of her mouth.
"...Xiao. no please, Xiao." his eyes widened. "we won't leave without you. i won't leave here without you." a sound like a sob broke through.
a residual nightmare from then. the piercing gaze in Xiao's eyes softened with a realisation and a hint of melancholy.
he reached out a hesitant hand, hovering over her forehead for a lingering second before meeting it. calloused fingers ran over the ridge between her brows.
a ridge of his own appeared between his brows as her voice grew heavy with tears under his hand. the sobs breaking through her words continued.
"i'm here." the murmur of her name after was soft, as subtle as the breeze blowing in.
reminded of how he nearly lost his life, he thought he felt the heavy weight of his own tears at the back of his throat as he shook her. the desperation in his eyes was quiet and seeking.
a startled gasp accompanied her as her eyes sprang open, and they were filled with tears and panic. there was confusion in them in the few seconds of silence as she lifted her head off the ground, staring back at him.
the tensed silence ticked by, before the tension on her face fell with relief and gratitude.
"...Xiao." another surge of tears sprang from her eyes once more.
"...i'm here, still here." Xiao swallowed thickly; he wasn't sure those words were for her or him.
he made no move to stop her when she rose from the ground to throw her arms around him, her face buried into his shoulders.
"promise me you won't do something like then again." the glint in his eyes wavered quietly as he touched a hand to her trembling back, palm sliding up to caress the back of her head. "d-don't ever discard away your life like it's nothing. you're not disposable."
his eyes closed, his ears focused on her fear tremoring in her words. "promise me, Xiao, please. cherish yourself like I cherish you."
"...i'm sorry." his voice shook. "and i promise."

xiao fanfic idea (based on the 2.7 chasm quest)
REQUESTING FOR ANY BORED GENSHIN WRITERS TO WRITE THIS!!!
hello i dont have any energy to rewrite all my fanfiction ideas for this quest bc i made this long ass post abt it in detail but it didnt save and now i feel so hollow and numb. im going through every stage of grief right now, currently at stage 4, depressed.
all i ask is for xiao chasm content. please. i beg. SOMEONE, LITERALLY ANYONE PLEASE MAKE XIAO FOUND FAMILY CONTENT
and then put him through an indescribable amount of pain and turmoil as he fails to accept his yaksha friends are dead and faces the slow realization he has no family, other than zhongli, left.
please help me relieve some of this pain by reblogging or tagging your favorite writers in the comments and writing down your xiao x reader chasm ideas (also in the comments) for their inspiration ...ill join too once im done crying over all of my work disappearing
for now i'll just share a few of my daydreams at its most basic level and hope to god somewhere in the world a genshin writer will take this idea and bring it to life
(2.7 spoilers utc)
yaksha found family + reader witnessing all of it, being an outsider as another weaker yaksha.
where you, unaware of the suffering and pain that comes with the responsibility of being one of the five yakshas, hope to get an ounce of understanding for them like they do with one another, hoping to be part of what seems like a "family."
yearning to gain even a bit of that familial warmth, you glance over to observe them on the sidelines and smile at the sounds of their contagious laughter directed at xiao's now fully-painted face.
as years pass by, you watch in horror as each yaksha slowly succumbs to the darkness of their karma one by one, never returning to that bright family dynamic they forgot about.
finally, when xiao, the youngest of all of them, the only one remaining, tries to recover from the loss of valiant warriors he considered his siblings, you console him, experiencing a pain similar to his. both of you support one another awaiting the day you can reunite with the rest of the yakshas again.
this can really extend as much as it wants to starting off w wholesome shenanigans and then angst to possible hurt comfort or just you and xiao wailing in pain together. i love a good slow burn so thats my personal request, like each paragraph written above can be extended to a whole post and split up into a whole series, but really its up to whoever wants to take up my challenge to make it however they want.
xiao and reader dynamic:
in this case i feel like xiao bonds with reader where they feel this mutual emptiness but in different kinds of ways.
you feel alone in the world, you feel excluded from the rest of the yakshas, you long for something you don't have and haven't had in a long time, for that bond that effortlessly ties the five yakshas together. despite being surrounded by so many people you constantly feel like not one of them understands.
you want to be with anyone as long as it's someone. but you have no one. there are so many thoughts, feelings and emotions but there's no one to share them with no one who cares enough to listen. you wish for what the yaksha's have, the family they built on their mutual suffering and joys, where they all understand each others pain because they all share the same experiences.
you feel like no matter how kind or nice or strong and heroic you are or can train to be nobody thinks to call or ask anything of you, its this numbing feeling that prods in your chest at the loneliest and quietest of days, it's not like they're outwardly avoiding you, quite the opposite. they tell you to join, but however close you are to them you still feel distant, and when you part for your more meagre duties compared to their wider scale dangerous tasks, the rift between you and the family increases.
you don't feel upset, nor do you feel hurt, if anything you feel acceptance. it's normal. at times you feel gratitude; a warm feeling bubbling inside whenever they come to talk to you. happiness; whenever you see their doting towards one another, their dumb pranks and stupid jokes.
as an outsider, a weaker yaksha, you watch the adepti you've looked up to for so long from a distance and internally relish in the joy of their shared happiness.
whereas xiao is longing for something he's had before but can't do anything to get back, its this feeling of hopelessness and this agonizing need to go back to how things were, how he was before. he's distraught with the frustration and regret of not being able to get back what was lost and never being able to experience anything similar to it again. its sporadic. sudden. when the yaksha's slowly disappear, after years of investing in them from afar you end up feeling this way too, this same hole in your chest, this unshakable itch at the back of your mind that won't go away. the bond that you hoped to join, the joy you've observed for so long and the happiness you secretly chewed off of no longer exists.
now that you and xiao are the last yaksha left, perhaps you can form a new bond over your losses together.
THIS IS JUST FOR INSPO ON HOW TO WRITE THEM BTW!! do it literally however u want i just thought this would be really cool and emotional to write cuz like theres readers loneliness built up over the years and then theres xiaos mourning and that sudden period of grief and then the awkward sort of mutual sadness they feel in the end
family dynamic inspo:
xiao being the temperamental, more self centered youngest and bosacius acting as the more protective self-sacrificing eldest brother. followed by indarius (pyro yaksha) the second oldest almost mom-like, bubbly and loud friend, the walmart zhongli as the mediator, calm middle child and bonanus (hydro yaksha) as the second youngest, possessing a more timid, polite and shy aura.

and when xiao is left alone, he tries to remember all his happiest memories with each of his friends. he longs for them, he longs for the past so much that it hurts. he wants to be his old self, to get rid of this aching loneliness but as each happy memory flashes by, he spirals into a deeper pit of sadness and activates this haunting feeling in his heart that feels like something is missing. recounting the memories of his loved ones, he swears that this will never happen to anyone close to him again. even at the cost of his own life. in the midst of his vulnerability, he unknowingly engrains that very same savior complex his leader, no, his brother bosacius once had.

*idk how to make an under the cut thing so anyways spoilers for the 2.7 event and stuff*
i finished the last part of the event yesterday and i wanted to ask what you guys felt with the ending! i know the genshin fandom loves to say everyone is going to die but i genuinely belived that was it for xiao, as much as i do love him.
its not that i wanted him to die? i wanted him to rest, and sure the ending gave him a little piece of mind i guess, but hes the only adeptus who hasn't retired, even zhongli did. but xiao is a yaksha so the karma eats at him all the time, i guess dying would've been the end of his suffering in my head?
and as much as i love how the event went, how zhongli saved him and all (i cried almost) i dont really think it should've been zhongli's decision.. like sure it was great and all, but xiao was ready to rest and sacrifice himself, as sad as it is, it would've also been peaceful. not that i resent zhongli or anyone else because of course no one wanted xiao to die. but truth is it would've been a good ending to his story, it would've closed it you know? the other yakshas died by going mad and fighting, xiao would've gone after doing everything he can to save others.. but no matter, im still happy hes okay and that he's now going to start opening up more to mortals like traveller said.
i was just thinking what other people thought about it or what other ways of seeing xiao's story there could be.
