i love that aromantic and asexual are trending because of the surge of positivity thanks to that stupid aphobic poll. we're going into 2024 with the blatant proof that aspec individuals are here, we're queer, and we're not going to disappear.

I was going through my health textbook and someone wrote "fuck that" under the lines about ending friendships because dating is more important and if that is not the most aromantic/aroace thing ever, I don't know what is.

i'm just saying that since a lot of people are annoying and make it their entire personality about falling/being in love, then i should be allowed to be annoying and make it my entire personality about not conforming to any of that!!

here's my tribute to the aspec community, to make this day a bit bearable, I guess. :))

aphobia is not just harmful to asexual and aromantic people. it hurts everyone when society tells people they are not complete without a romantic partner. that they are aren’t a whole person if they aren’t in love and sexually desirable. people spend some of the most fulfilling parts of their lives feeling like they’re wasting that time because they aren’t in a relationship. they spend so much time looking for “the one”. time that could be spent learning, travelling, building a found family. they miss out on meaningful relationships, on soulmates, because they are told that person can’t be the most important person in their life. it devalues the support that’s found in community, it devalues the love found in friendships, it devalues the importance for living for oneself.

amatonormativity isn't something that affects only aro people. it affects all people, aspec or not, queer or not. you can be cishetallo and still be affected by amatonormativity because you're told that being single is bad. amatonormativity isn't a new queer buzzword made for a select few people, it's an actual societal assumption that affects everyone.

can we just all collectively agree that it is okay for aroace characters not to date or have sex if they clearly show no interest in it or repulsion?

can we respect that and not ship them?

for an aro person, I fantasize a lot about intimacy. but not in a romantic context like smoochy ooky pooky boo-boo...hell no.

intimacy as in being completely emotionally open to/with someone, being so comfortable with them that you just feel safe and warm. I want to have that type of closeness with someone without having to feel guilty that I won't be able to give them romantic love.

it can be something so very deep within my core, but it's just...not romantic. is that so bad?

I think it’s incredibly important for young people to be able to think about their future, and imagine that they might be happy

And unfortunately, this is a feeling that is stolen from a lot of young aro people the second that they realize they’re aro

So I want to say it right now: You can be happy

You can have a queerplatonic partner. You can have a romantic partner. You can have the freedom of singlehood. You can be a virgin, or you can have sex. You can have kids. You can be childfree and just be the cool aunt/uncle/pibling. You can have a whole bunch of friends and a thriving community of people to hang out with every weekend. You can live all alone in the woods with your eleven dogs and your online crocheting business

There are so many options before you besides the typical “dating-marriage-kids” pipeline, and if you try to do what you think you’ll enjoy, I promise that you can be happy
