Day 3 - AUS / Free Day
"How about you leave now without anyone---and I won't murder you."💨🍃
Tumblr media
So, to add context. I've been reading Coinverse by Mattecat on AO3 or also known as @realityandrebirth. And for Day 3's prompt, I decided to make a scene redraw from the fic. Ultimately, in the fic, Skylor's the one who gets to have the spotlight for having to fight Clouse in this chapter, but this scene specifically where Morro tries to fight him really stood out for me.
Leading me to make him look all powered up and all that shit.
With him recalling his title as the previous lieutenant of the Preeminent to intimidate Clouse was a nice thought. Missed that confident and intimidating aura he's known for.

Me? Drawing fanart of a fanfic? More likely than you'd think.
The fic is Forgetting the coin for the ferryman, by @realityandrebirth or mattecat on ao3 ;))
I fucking LOVE this fanfic. So so badly. I've known it for a day but if anything happened to it I would kill everyone in this room and then myself. Tysm.
Also their sprinkles are colour coded cough cough

My post about machines taking away their own abilities to appreciate the sights of the world and their abilities to speak has gotten a little more attention but listen to me,
They aren't stripped of all ability to appreciate beauty. They can hear just fine, maybe even very well. They listen to music. They listen for music in a world of chaotic noise. Maybe it only lures them, but maybe it's something more. Either way, music is important for them, to them.
It might be nice to hear soft music in the midst of Hell filled with screams, and gunshots, and blades. If a machine can feel at peace, it's surely there.
And of course the music itself is a form of communication. It says "Here, you are safe for a moment. Here, you may sit. Here, you can get something new. Weapons. A paint job. The cybergrind."
There's other forms of communication too, don't forget that.
V2 in the bow during their first encounter. The cracking of their knuckles in their second encounter. It says, "I respect you, let's fight well." And then it says "Fuck you man, eat shit, die." I'm exaggerating of course.
And in my mind eye too, the possibly that V1 tosses a coin to the ferryman is communication too, and it says "No real need for this fight. Better not to."
You know what I mean? I'm sappy, I'm hopelessly hopeful, and I find these machines incredibly complex. I like them a lot. And I talk out of my own ass.

Pretty sure I came home from my walk yesterday, wrote a poem, and then got distracted doing other things and never posted it so here:
1935.
But I do love Michigan, though.
It's an Easter Sunday in April and it's spring but also it's winter but also it's basically summer, because I left the house without wearing gloves and that counts, more or less.
It's pushing seventy in the sunshine.  It's a happy fifty-five in the shade.  It's nearly freezing if the wind blows off the lake just wrong and you're standing on the last of the snowpack.  I have seen people today in down jackets.  I have seen people today in tank tops.  One dude was out jogging purely topless, and I understand where each of these people were coming from.
If you're going out today, bring some water.  If you're going out today, bring a jacket for the wind.  If you're going out today, bring some ice grippers for your flip-flops and two coins for the ferryman.  If you're going out today, don't forget your sunscreen.
It snowed yesterday when I was leaving the house in the morning.  It will snow again next week, or so they tell us.  It will be seventy up until then, beautiful sunshine and gentle breezes and maybe just the occasional rain of frogs.
But I do love Michigan, though.
Oh I do love Michigan so.

Morro for the opinion bingo? :o
Tumblr media
Ooh im conflicted on this one. I mean, hes a great villain and probably one of the most interesting antagonists in the series, and I think there is so much untapped potential in his character that never got fully utilized. There are so many mysteries to him as well that id have loved to see get answered. But the part im conflicted on is what kind of screentime he should get.
On the one hand, he absolutely deserves a full redemption arc and not just a quick scene or two like in DotD. I think the Morro stans could explain this better, but between his rough childhood, his complicated motivations, and the fact that he was like 16 (a CHILD) when he died, i think he definitely deserves a redemption arc. Not to mention that seeing Wu and Lloyd in particular try to navigate their feelings about him would be very compelling. And we could have an interesting narrative about redemption and how redemption does not automatically necessitate forgiveness, and that forgiveness is not earned but freely given, and how redemption isn't something you can achieve but something to constantly strive towards.
And itd be interesting to deconstruct Morro's character from that angle, and dissect WHY he wanted to be the green ninja so badly and WHY he was so determined to be the best (maybe Wu pushed him too hard when training him? Again thats a question for a Morro stan). Not to mention that Morro's character generates a lot of interesting discussion about destiny, and bringing Morro back in a redemptive capacity could allow the story to explore just how harmful the green ninja prophecy has been to everyone involved.
On the OTHER hand, Morro's death was narratively satisfying, and im also of the opinion that even if a character deserves redemption, doesnt mean they have to get it in the end. Sometimes bad things happen, and people dont get the happy endings they deserve. Morro's character arc is a tragedy from beginning to end, as this orphaned kid who became so determined to prove himself to the man who took him in that he began to equate his worth with his relation to destiny, and died young and alone and in pain on a quest to prove destiny wrong. And then, even with the threat of dying a second time, well. "You can only save those who want to be saved." Does he say this because he realised the error in his ways and doesnt think he deserves to be saved, or because he still cant bring himself to be weak and reliant in front of his old teacher, is still too terrified of depending on others to accept Wu's help even in his final moments? Idk. Its a bit of both, i think. Either way I really do enjoy Morro's character arc as a tragedy, and part of me almost doesnt want him to come back just to change that.
But again, im pretty conflicted on it, and I havent quite decided either way on whether or not id like him to be redeemed. I see the merit in both options. That being said, the Morro redemption fic "Forgetting the Coin for the Ferryman" is by far one of my favorite fics in this fandom.

"If you come near her again I will kill you. That's what I told you. But here we are. I'm done playing."
It wasn't until they were practically nose to nose outside that cramped hovel of a bar on Doyle street that Joel Benson had what could have been the only moment of clarity in his sorry pitiful life. The flash of silver in the lamp light had caught his attention.
"Every time you laid a hand on her you broke her heart. You were supposed to love her, protect her. Cherish her. "
His normal grimacing snarling face turned into one of complete shock as she felt his belly give.
"You fucking forget who you're dealing with, Benson. I know a thing or two."
A shuddering moan as she worked it deeper, his white T-shirt was now awash in crimson and staining rapidly. He made a futile grab for her hair once more as she stared him down.
"Now, it's time for you to take your medicine, boyo."
In one fluid movement the leggy brunette left a serial abuser in a pool of his own blood with his guts hanging out in what the newspapers would say was 'a complete act of self defense.' Which it was. They just missed the part where she shoved two copper coins down the bastards throat to pay the ferryman to take him to hell where he belonged.
She had come back into the barroom without so much as a speck of his blood on her hands.
"Call the fuckin' cops. I killed the bastard."
She'd said as she slumped into a barstool and lit a cigarette. Her hands were shaking and her knees felt weak. The entire room went silent as everyone stared at her.
"Fine. I'll do it then."
Yanking the phone from the cradle she dialed the number and was patched through to dispatch.
"My name is Mary Colleen Murphy and I just fucking killed Joel Benson in self defense."
Slamming down the receiver she smoked her first of many cigarettes. Picking up the phone one last time before the boys in blue showed up she dialed familiar number.
"Jackie, It's me. Go get Helene, please. Tell her she's finally safe. I love you and please tell her I love her. Give her a hug for me, ok?

Ⅱ. The Ferryman
Dead birds fall like a titan’s lung collapsing; raining feathers in tiptoed steps swept away by current.
Within the confines of his boat he is the body of a haunted house - chalk faces float beneath his oculus uterque like ghosts behind windows of too-thick glass.
The waters part and dissipate with cries of prayers lost as he draws his path across stygian abyss where forgetfulness is made and paid for in blinding coins of gold.

Alright. I know it's been a while. Some mental blocks with writing and busy schedules. But I finally finished one more chapter before 2023 was out (I am aware this is getting posted in 2024, even in my own time zone, but that's beside the point). This track is more of a... character chapter, focused mainly on exploring who Kuro is as a person. Alex also gets some characterization moments here as well, albeit mainly in regards to her relationship with Kuro for now (I'll dedicate one more specifically to her later). I wasn't sure exactly where I wanted to end it and after some deliberating with myself, I chose to move a scene I originally wanted to cover with this track into the next one. This facilitated a name change for it. This one is named after the ninth track from Gods of the Earth, a 2008 album by The Sword (who unfortunately disbanded in 2022). I initially heard it via Guitar Hero: Metallica and the closing words of the track have always stuck with me. It's a thematic concept I would like to use properly in the future. Now, take a quick moment to answer this question As the ferry approaches the shore Will you have the coin to pay for your passage Or the courage to take up the oar?
Obviously, the direct reference is to the ferryman of the underworld and if one is prepared to face their end, either by paying their toll or by doing the work themselves. But I think it can also refer to anyone facing a difficult, seemingly impossible task in their life. Are you ready to do what you must to overcome it? It's not always easy, but the reward may just be worth the struggle. OH! And before I forget, this chapter features a character created by a dear friend of mine as a guest! Vincent "Vin" Hawthorne from @needlessexposition!

Summary: Set in Coinverse, Morro rants about art therapy.
Warnings: none.
@morrotober
Morrotober: Day Thirteen
He was still ranting when Nya and Skylor arrived. Morro didn't care enough to acknowledge them. "It was so stupid!" he said, sitting on the pawn shop's counter. "Like I'm supposed to finger paint my feelings?"
Ronin rolled his eyes. "Hey, Nya," he said, leaning out from behind Morro. "What's up?"
"Not much," Nya said. "What's up with him?"
"He went to therapy," Ronin said.
"Art therapy," Morro said disdainfully. "Useless."
"Hey, hey," said Skylor, ruffling his hair. Morro shoved her hand away. "It's good you're doing any therapy at all. Didn't Borg want you to start it, like, years ago?"
Morro groaned. "Yeah, but that was supposed to be real therapy, not just messing around."
Nya laughed. "At least you got to make something, right?" she said. "What was it?"
"Yeah," said Ronin. "You've been complaining this whole time, right? I want to at least see what you drew."
Morro pushed him away. "Ugh. It's not like they had anything interesting, it's just paper and pencils."
Ronin snorted. "So what was that crap about finger painting?"
"I mean, they had it, but I'm not using my hands to paint!"
Skylor smiled. "If you're not comfortable showing it, you don't have to, but I wouldn't mind seeing it if you are."
Morro shrugged and dug in his back pocket. "Here," he said, holding out a folded piece of paper. "It's not interesting."
He hopped off the counter and unfolded the paper on it. Nya, Skylor, and Ronin gathered to look. "Huh," Nya said. "You drew towers?"
Morro nodded. He had drawn five stone towers of varying styles and fantastical elements. "They had some prompt for me, but I didn't care about it."
Skylor shook her head. "So it's not that art therapy sucked, it's that you're a tough patient."
"I'm not surprised," Nya said. "This one's cool."
She pointed to a tower with a waterfall falling from the top window. Morro nodded. "I don't know how you'd actually make something like that," he said. "I mean, sure, it's a cool looking fountain, but it'd be a lot of effort to pump that much water to the top, especially if it's flowing constantly."
"You thought about making it?"
"No? Just like, how it would be done." Morro pointed at another one. "See how big this one is? It would have to be wind-resistant, so I tried to draw it with an aerodynamic shape, or something."
"Huh," said Nya. "You know a lot about this."
Heat rose in his cheeks. "Not really," Morro said, looking away. "There's plenty of architecture I don't know."
Skylor patted his shoulder. "Is this what you're going to college for?"
Anxiety spiked through him. "I'm not going to college," Morro said sharply. "I don't care if Dad wants me to, it's my choice."
"You could be an architect," Nya said. "These are cool."
"It doesn't matter, I just drew them for fun."
"Aw, c'mon." Nya smiled at him. "Your dad is Cyrus Borg, which means not only is your college totally paid for, but every university in Ninjago will be fighting to get you. Chances like that don't happen to everyone. They sure didn't happen to me."
Morro started to talk, then stopped, and settled for a wordless grumble and snatching his paper off the table. Skylor coughed and changed the subject, but Morro tuned out the rest of the conversation until it was time to go home.
