1956 Edsel Raven concept car
The Ford Thunderbird began life in 1953 as a direct response to Chevrolet's recently unveiled Corvette prototype. Calling in some major players in the design field, the Thunderbird rapidly developed from idea to prototype in about a year. Ford was very pleased to see record-breaking sales of the Thunderbird reach 23 times the number of Corvettes sold in 1955.
With a new Edsel Corsair model staged for production in 1958, Edsel saw the great success and popularity of the Thunderbird as a viable platform for a mid-level entry personal luxury car within the Ford corporate lineup below the top-of-the-line Continental. In 1956, borrowing the Thunderbird’s basic frame and removable hardtop roof, Edsel had its design team rush to create a prototype similar to the Thunderbird in length, though being slightly heftier in general proportions to fit the fresh styling of the new Corsair.
Edsel was so confident it had a winner, that an operable prototype of the car was driven to a meeting with Ford execs where it was touted that the new Raven model would provide a bit more headroom and elbow room than the Thunderbird, and offer even more luxury options at mid-level pricing. Edsel also went on to elaborate how Ford could then focus more attention to racing applications of the Thunderbird as to be more competitive against the Corvette.Hemmings OriginalsThe video player is currently playing an ad.

🇺🇲 Explore the intriguing history of the Ford Edsel—a car that captivated the automotive world with its bold design and innovative features! Introduced in 1956, the Edsel was envisioned as a revolutionary addition to the American automobile market.
🎩 Edsel was a division and brand of automobiles that was produced by the Ford Motor Company. Named after Edsel Ford, the son of company founder Henry Ford, the Edsel was intended to fill the gap between Ford and Mercury, offering consumers a new level of luxury and sophistication. With its distinctive styling and advanced engineering, the Edsel was poised to make a splash in the competitive automotive landscape.
🚘 Despite high expectations and extensive marketing campaigns, the Ford Edsel faced numerous challenges upon its release. Its unconventional design, characterized by a unique grille and distinctive "horse collar" front bumper, divided opinion among consumers and critics alike.
⚙️ Under the hood, the Edsel boasted a range of powerful engines and innovative technologies, including the "Teletouch" automatic transmission and "E-475" V8 engine. However, production delays and quality control issues tarnished its reputation in the eyes of consumers, leading to disappointing sales figures.
💔 The launch of the Ford Edsel on "E-Day" in September 1957 remains one of the most highly anticipated events in automotive history. Despite the initial hype, the Edsel failed to resonate with buyers, leading to its discontinuation in 1960 after just three model years.
🌟 Although the Ford Edsel may not have achieved commercial success, it remains a fascinating chapter in the annals of automotive history, showcasing the risks and challenges inherent in innovation and design.

Cars of Doo Wop City, Part 8
One of my favorite things about Doo Wop City is the beautiful cars, destined to become classics. Here's a 1959 Edsel Corsair Convertible!
The streets of Wildwood NJ are filled with beautiful cars destined to one day be classics. At Shore Styles hair salon, on the intersection of Andrews Avenue, and Park Boulevard, the owner of a sleek 1959 Edsel Corsair parked his ride. These photos were taken on a beautiful sunny day: Wednesday, August 2nd, 1967. (…Or, was that 2023?) To protect the owner’s personal information, I used spotting…
