Food in Julie and Julia (2009)

It’s 13 years later and no one can touch the movie.

As a tribute for the woman who began it all, Julie Powell, I am beginning a series where I present the food of Julie and Julia. The movie was perhaps my awakening to the magic that food is and made me fall in love with it. It made me appreciate the beauty of food and the ingredients.

Happy pi day! I think stories are always better if they have a delicious pie in them. So here's a random list of pies on screen, that I lowkey want to make and eat. 🥧

🎞 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

🥧 Gooseberry Pie

The queen poisoned Snow before she could put it in the oven. That's the real tragedy. I've never had a gooseberry pie, but my dad has a small gooseberry bush that might produce enough for a pie some day.

🥧 Chocolate Silk Pie

Julie makes a pie in the opening of the movie while musing about how cooking brings her peace in a chaotic world. I had never had a chocolate silk pie before, but after the movie I looked up a recipe and made it. It's now one of my most requested pies at Thanksgiving. Although I like to use an oreo crust where Julie used a Graham cracker.

Of course the perfect little idyllic town of Spectre, Alabama served hot apple pie. It looked real good too.

At least I think it's a fish pie because of the design on top, not positive. Fish pie wouldn't be my favorite to eat. It was baked in a wood fired oven, and man, did the crust look amazing.

🥧 Shepherd's Pie, Pumpkin Pasties, and Treacle Tart

(This includes the books as well since I think only the Pumpkin Pasties are mentioned in the movies.) Shepherd's pie is pure comfort food. We aren't really shown pumpkin pasties, but they sound like mini pumpkin hand pies. I saw Binging with Babish make Treacle tart (Harry's favorite) and now it's on my wish list. I just have to order some golden syrup from the UK to make it.

🥧 Raspberry Rhubarb Pie?

We don't really know what kind of pie Rapunzel bakes in her tower kitchen, but the internet thinks it's raspberry rhubarb, which sounds awesome.

🥧 Sweet Potato Pie

I love how Will Smith's character is so excited for his Grandma's pie, that he just starts eating without even cutting a slice. Then he tells some stranger on the street to hold it or wear it. 🤣

🥧 Imagination Cream Pie

All the imaginary food in Neverland looked amazing to me as a kid. It would be fun to try to make a cream pie that was as colorful as the food in that scene. I wonder what flavor it should be? Inventing new pies is fun.

Arguably not pie, but it's a filling in a pasty, so close enough. Binging with Babish's recipe looks awesome, but I have yet to try it. Kronk is a proud cook, and I respect him for it.

They did more throwing than eating, but the pies still looked tasty, and it was a good time.

🥧 Marshmallow Pie, Dark Chocolate Strawberry Pie, Spiced Pumpkin Pie, Chocolate Blackberry Pie, Butterscotch Banana Pudding Pie, Ham and Cheese Quiche, Spaghetti Pie, Pecan Cheesecake, Peach Pie, Cherry Pie, Chocolate Custard Pie, Cinnamon Custard (hope I remembered them all)

Before I saw Waitress, I had made pies, but I never thought about inventing new pies. Jenna got me thinking more creatively. I've since made my own versions of her Dark Chocolate Strawberry, Chocolate Silk, Spaghetti Pie, and Ham and Cheese Quiche. FYI, one of the pies on the DVD cover has a lazy lattice, and I noticed. 👀

🥧 Chicken Pot Pie

Monk got the crust perfectly placed and then stalled while he counted the peas. It hurt my heart that I never got to see the finished product. I should make more pot pies, they are awesome.

Avatar did not need a pie to be one of the best shows ever, but it did, because Avatar has it all. The face Aang makes when tempted with egg custard is adorable. Now I know why, as I made an egg custard a few years ago at Christmas.

After a long hard day, Mary's partner got her a big slice of pie from a bakery and told her, "Eat pie. Pie makes everything better." Thank you, Marshall. We stan.

Of course my favorite show has pie. They are based on an Israeli dessert, but they're close enough to pie for me. Callum's Spellbook has a recipe, although I might try making them with traditional pie dough. Maybe for the season 6 premier?🤞 I just have to decide which flavor. 🤔

I watched the first episode, and when they mentioned pie, I was like, this show is going to be good. Even though Tree Trunks was wisked to another dimension and never actually got to finish her pie, I ended up loving Adventure Time.

No joke, my therapist recommended this show to me because she knew I loved baking pies. I, of corse, immediately identified with the sad pie maker who was obsessed with making pies as a way to cope. I binged the entire series, then found out it was cancelled, and processed to mourn for the next week. I still want to try to recreate some of their signature pies. The Kiwi Cream is so pretty.

These the first video games I ever finished (my parents banned them so I didn't get to start playing until I was older). The combat still kind of scares me, but I took to the cooking right away. On my first play through, I was so excited to get Tabantha Wheat, so I could finally make pies. Wild's era Link is so much cooler because he's a pie maker. I always keep a few egg custard tarts in my inventory for some quick hearts.

Summer is a great time to be outdoors soaking up the abundant warmth and sunshine. But when the temperature and humidity get too uncomfortable, kicking back in a chilled movie theater while catching Hollywood’s latest release is a brilliant way to escape. Plus, there are typically plenty of foodie hooks and star-studded culinary references sprinkled throughout most films for the gastronomically inclined moviegoers amongst us to enjoy. This summer’s blockbusters are no exception, so make it dinner and a movie this weekend with a big screen-themed meal sourced with ingredients from your local Down to Earth farmers market.

Box office appetizers Are you spending time under the sea with Ariel and her friends? If so, how about putting together an icy platter of fresh Blue Point oysters, littleneck clams and shrimp from American Pride Seafood? Locally and responsibly harvested shellfish is one of the most environmentally sustainable forms of animal protein you can eat and the fruits of our nearby seas have a bounty of gems to offer.

Although meant to depict Ancient Greece, did you know that scenes from the last installment in Indy’s adventure series were actually filmed in various locations throughout Sicily? Catch the pan-Mediterranean vibe with a salad made from sun-ripened cucumbers and tomatoes from the farmstalls, black olives from Dr. Pickle and a big slab of fresh feta from SOVA Farms. Or pick up some spanakopita and other traditional delicacies from Anthi’s Greek Specialties.  Main feature entrées If you’ve just spent three hours riveted by the story of the intensely conflicted scientist behind the titular movie, you’ll have noticed Oppenheimer’s preferred diet of strong martinis, coffee, cigarettes and very little food. While we certainly don’t advocate for this approach to eating, he also held a penchant for extremely spicy fare that he would indulge through homemade meals of nasi goreng (aka Indonesian fried rice). Nasi goreng is one of Indonesia's five national dishes and is regularly eaten for breakfast, lunch and even dinner. A New York City native, Oppenheimer is said to have learned how to make it while pursuing a post doctorate in the Dutch University town of Leiden, which had a large Indonesian student population. Nasi goreng is typically made with leftover rice to avoid food waste, seasoned with sweet soy sauce, paired with fresh sliced tomato and cucumber, then topped with a fried egg. To give this nuclear-scientist worthy meal a whirl, pick up veggies from the farmstalls and New York State grown rice and pastured eggs from Great Joy Family Farm and try out this 20-minute recipe from Serious Eats. If you’re not in the mood for Asian food, your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to make a classic Italian dish in a nod to where scenes in the latest Tom Cruise action flick were filmed. Pick up some fresh pasta from La Trafila, Calabrian Nduja from Goode and Local, olive oil from Arlotta Food Studio and whip up a big plate of authentic Rigatoni Nduja. Silver screen desserts When you have been web crawling through New York City with our hometown spidery superhero, wrap up dinner with a mouth-watering pie from Newgate Farms that spans the spiderverse. Peter Parker loved his Aunt May’s old fashioned cherry pie, but the striking red of this in-season dessert is easily updated with a neat scoop of vanilla ice cream to evoke the sleek modern lines of Miles Morales’ superhero uniform. Hard core fans will serve it on a black plate for the full effect. If you’re embracing the summer of pink, slowcocoa craft chocolate has just the dessert for you! Their special edition vegan white chocolate bars, made in honor of everyone’s favorite fashion-plate doll, are actually a pretty pale pink in color. The tasting notes read “strawberry shortcake, cotton candy and rainbow sprinkles” but think outside of the box since they’re made with only four organic ingredients: pink hibiscus flower powder, cacao butter, cane sugar and soymilk. Plus, 20% of all sales of these unique bars are going to NYLAG, an organization that provides free legal aid to migrants and other folks in crisis in New York.
