Maple Robes and Lace Veils
Hua Cheng x M!Reader x Xie Lian
Tumblr media
this is the second part of my first story, "The First Glance". Again it's technically about my OC since no one's asking for anything. I just have it written to where it can be for a reader. 😋
Switching pov's
Also guys I am not Chinese but I try to find words and translations that are important to my OC's story.
Dúshé means poison laced tongue in simplified Chinese (I think)
Mûguô means bitch, or whore in simplified Chinese (I think)
Míngqín means song bird it's Y/n's nickname
Previous part: First Glance
_____________________________________________
Once the morning has officially started, San Lang goes back to his wood pile. You stand by Xie Lian while San Lang somehow manages to build a whole door for the shrine. Xie Lian seems to love it, it's obvious with how he's become fascinated by opening and closing it repeatedly.
"I thought a door would be easier to stick talismans on than a curtain" San Lang explains. You smile and give a small clap. "It's a very well made door, San Lang, good job" you giggle at Xie Lian's excitement.
At the mention of talismans Xie Lian seems to remember something. He claps his hands together, "Oh Míngqín I forgot to tell you what happened at Mount Yunjin! I'm so sorry, so much happened yesterday"
You wave a hand, "it's nothing to worry about. How important could it be? I was there for most of it." You smile but Xie Lian's face is very serious so really nothing's funny at all.
"Well actually," Xie Lian laughs nervously, scratching his temple. "I talked with the heavenly officials and I found out that I met a calamity yesterday." Your face morphs into shock but Xie Lian quickly settles you down. "Not him." The words are met with silence. Of course it wasn't the white calamity. What were you thinking? ,"They called him Crimson Rain Sought Flower, his name is Hua Cheng" Xie Lian smiles. At this ghost's mention San Lang starts to pay attention to the conversation. "He walked me through the forest yesterday and I mistook him to be the ghost groom but he isn't. He isn't hard to be mistaken after seeing his silver butterflies ."
You're in shock. Because you got caught up in a swarm of silver butterflies yesterday. "I... Just don't understand. Why would a calamity be hanging around Mount Yunjin? Crimson Rain Sought Flower is known to stay in his den." You sigh.
You easily worry about Xie Lian and panic once more. "He didn't hurt you did he?" You move closer to Xie Lian and hold his face, looking for marks or bruises. "Why didn't you call for me, I would've been there right away." You frown and move back once you're satisfied with your search.
"There was no need to call, he didn't hurt me... He led me through the forest and safely delivered me to the temple." Xie Lian smiles but you sigh.
Xie Lian didn't get hurt, but a well known calamity shows up and helps Xie Lian? Coincidence. The same calamity helping you? Intention.
"...I suppose it's okay. As long as you didn't get hurt A-Lian. Just be careful." You look to the ground, but Xie Lian pats your head. "I am careful, ah you really should've seen the butterflies though Míngqín They were very beautiful"
You arch a brow then shake your head. "I actually did see them but, Wèizhī might eat them" Wèizhī is your two birds - Oriental Magpie- , they're not here right now though. They're probably bathing in water somewhere. Hm a bath doesn't sound so bad actually-, "Y/n?" You're brought back into focus when San Lang gains your attention. "Sorry I tend to lose my train of thought" you hum.
"What about you y/n?" You cock your head to the side at San Lang's question. "What have you heard about Crimson Rain" San Lang smiles mischievously.
"Why would I know anything about anybody?" You shrug. Of course you've heard and seen plenty about Hua Cheng, you're a ghost. You're... Residence happens to be near Ghost City.
Xie Lian nods in agreement though, he could use the info. You sigh, "Who knows? He stays in his den, and although close I've never seen him in my city." You shrug again.
All of you eventually go back inside. You end up staring at the painting again. You would have eventually painted something for Xie Lian but you've been busy working on the actual build of the shrine. You've always been good at the arts. Drawing, dancing, and singing. That is why you're the God of Song after all.
"San Lang's skills are very beautiful" You say, looking over at him. "Who taught you?"
San Lang shakes his head. "I had a good teacher a while back, I paint mostly for fun now." You nod at his explanation and smile back at the painting. You really do like it. It shows Xie Lian in what once used to be all his glory.
"Do you really like it so much, Míngqín?" Xie Lian stares at you and you've forgotten you don't have a veil on. They can see your expressions and you aren't just invisible anymore. You blush, and instinctively cover your mouth with your sleeve.
"O-oh, well yes I like it. It's very well done and it captures the prince of XianLe very beautifully." You stutter and look away.
The moment is interrupted when the three of you hear a scream and a man running towards the shrine. "Save Me! Save me please!" The panicked man grabs Xie Lian's wrist very harshly. It's in your nature, you can't help it. You are quick to push the man away, and to protect Xie Lian. He pats your arm however, in a 'It's okay' motion. Xie Lian sits the man down and asks for an explanation from him.
You and San Lang glare at him. Both of you don't trust him and both of you share a glance when the man explains he's from Banyue pass. Which has since turned into a dry land of sands. The man was running away from what killed his other group members.
"You ran all the way from Banyue pass to here?" San Lang asks with crossed arms. Your form is the same. The man seems to sweat at this, but Xie Lian in all his kindness offers the man a drink. Xie Lian is kind but he's probably just testing if the man is a mortal or not.
"No need to be polite you can drink" The man -for all his supposed running- hesitates to take the water Xie Lian so generously offered. When he does drink it, the water going into his body sounds hollow. You and Xie Lian both know it. "You can stop drinking now." Xie Lian says and takes the water from the man's hands. His disguise is ruined and everyone knows now. The man rises up quickly though and pulls a sword from his sleeve, moving to attack Xie Lian.
Before you or San Lang can act, Xie Lian is quick enough to flick the sword away. Sometimes you forget Xie Lian is just hiding his strength. The man tries to run and Xie Lian moves to use Rou'ye but the man drops and a sad looking skin bag(?) is left behind... A chopstick is what caused the damage. You and Xie Lian both whip your heads around to San Lang. Xie Lian goes to investigate the corpse but you still stare at San Lang.
"A chopstick?" You ask with an arched brow. "A chopstick" San Lang only smiles and you sigh. You both go to Xie Lian. When you get closer you can see that Xie Lian is using the array, so you do too. The only thing you can really hear is people being joyful about merits, and ignoring Xie Lian. Officials disgust you.
"Are the lot of you deaf? Did you not hear his highness? He asked a question." Your voice rings through the array and the officials who were once joyful before quiet down. Instead of answering, the cowards leave the array.
You're not a popular force in the heavens. Especially since your personality has always been cold and distant. You were actually loved once before, for your unnatural beauty and voice people revered you. That was until they found out you were a ghost and before they trashed Xie Lian's name. You would cause trouble for the other gods and challenge them often, causing fear to most officials. You always defended Xie Lian's name and when given the chance for promotion, you refused and chose to stay with Xie Lian instead.
This loyalty of yours to a scrap god however causes other officials to look down on you, they also just don't like your attitude. You have other unofficial titles that the heavenly officials made and of course those names spread. There's one title that used to be used quite often but you actually haven't heard any officials call you that in a long time. That title is "mûguô". Someone caught word of your past and decided to spread the name to upset you, but it faded out very quickly. That official -who you never even knew the name of- disappeared shortly after, with their temples burnt and no trace of them.
You're stuck in your thoughts until you hear Ling Wen answer Xie Lian's question about Banyue Pass. You leave the array, Xie Lian will tell you what's going on. When you look over at San Lang he's giving you a cheeky smile. "What?" You tilt your head but he just shakes his head.
You run your hands over your new braid while Xie Lian talks to Ling Wen. You mess with the red ribbon San Lang tied your hair with. It's definitely a pop out color compared to all the white you wear.
"San Lang, I'm afraid me and y/n will have to go far away soon" Xie Lian pipes up and stands from the... Thing on the ground. San Lang furrows a brow at the news and then gives a smug grin. "Why doesn't gege and y/n take me with them? I know a lot about Banyue Pass."
Xie Lian looks confused but he nods anyways. You wouldn't mind if San Lang came along either. "Oh? What do you know about Banyue Pass San Lang, you're far too young to know those things" you tease with a smile, while the three of you head inside the shrine.
San Lang chuckles and goes to speak before a knock on the door makes you all silent. You all look at each other in a moment of silence before Xie Lian opens the door.
When Xie Lian opens the door it reveals Mu Qing and Feng Xin who are in disguise... They are in a shocked silence not having seen you in a long time and to see your face after so long. You all sit in silence.
After you get over your shock you let out a panicked yelp and cover your face. They saw your face! Your cursed, cursed face! You shove your face into your hands. You didn't want Mu Qing to see it. He'd use it against you and you already hate him enough already. Feng Xin saw your face! He'll surely be disgusted with you now.
You start to groan into your sleeves, trying to move away from their eyes. You try to find your veil through the slits of your fingers. You can hear your name tumble from Feng Xin's lips but the door slams and someone whisks you away into their arms. They forcibly move your hands away from your face and now you can see that your face to face with red robes .
San Lang holds your wrists, and that stops you from hiding your face. "San Lang, my veil? Where's my veil?" You don't have a clue where he put it. Another pair of hands come into view and puts your veil over your eyes. You know it's Xie Lian.
Now that you can actually tell what your surroundings are you find that you're in San Lang's arms. You blush and step back. You hadn't meant to grip onto him so tightly.
__________________________________________________
Xie Lian sighs in relief when they find y/n's veil. Xie Lian is actually sad to see his face hidden again. He hasn't seen your face in so long and he missed it. Xie Lian supposes he doesn't mind though. If anyone deserves to see your beauty it's him and he actually doesn't want Feng Xin or Mu Qing to look. Xie Lian shakes his head to remove such thoughts. As if he could describe your face like it was a secret to keep between the three of you.
"I'm going to open the door now y/n" he pats your hand. He waits for your nod before opening the door again. He smiles nervously at the two officials outside. Of course Xie Lian knows who they really are but for now he'll pretend. "Ah why are you two here?"
Mu Qing and Feng Xin have crossed arms "Are you going to Banyue Pass? We're going with you" they say at the same time and then glare at each other. Xie Lian laughs but opens the door to let them inside. He looks at y/n keeping an eye on him. Xie Lian knows his temper.
When Feng Xin and Mu Qing see San Lang they're alarmed. Holding up their lighting, and fire. "Who's he?" Mu Qing nods his head at San Lang. Xie Lian sighs, "This is San Lang"
Feng Xin's eye twitches, "where did he come from? Where's his family? Do you usually invite people you don't know into your home?"
Xie Lian laughs nervously but he's glad that the attention isn't on y/n anymore.
Not until Mu Qing attempts to throw lightning at San Lang. It would have most definitely hit the wall and caused a big hole but y/n dispersed it. Sending a shot of ice towards Mu Qing. His face hides behind his veil but Xie Lian knows you're angry. "No fighting in the shrine. If you damage the shrine I promise to return the damage double to your god's palace" he spits with venom, threatening Mu Qing's palace.
It's evident y/n doesn't try to hide who he is. Sure he's in his avatar and he looks simple. However he doesn't do a good job at keeping his abilities at bay.
Xie Lian doesn't know whether to laugh or cry. The tension in the room is very high. Mu Qing looks ready to argue back but San Lang steps in front of y/n and stands by Xie Lian's side. "Are these two servants, gege?" He hums with a smug smirk.
"uhm something like that but not exactly-" Xie Lian gets interrupted when San Lang throws a broom into Mu Qing's hands. "Start helping then" San Lang smiles. His face resembles a mischievous fox. Y/n cackles.
Xie Lian waves his hands trying to calm a cursing Feng Xin and Mu Qing down. "Please for my sake leave him alone" he laughs nervously. He doesn't need his shrine to get destroyed not that y/n would let that happen.
Talking about y/n, ah. He's glaring at Mu Qing under the veil. He'll have to make sure they don't break out into a fight either. San Lang leans on y/n's shoulder and the stiffness seems to leave y/n's body. Xie Lian isn't too worried about anyone fighting. He thinks San Lang will keep a careful eye on y/n.
Xie Lian rubs his temple. "Maybe Feng Xin should make a pathway so that we can get to Banyue Pass quickly?"
Feng Xin does just that. Leaving Mu Qing standing alone in front of the three of them. "Is he coming with us?" Mu Qing points to San Lang with furrowed brows. Xie Lian sighs and goes to answer but y/n answers for him
"Of course, since when was it a servant's job to worry about his highness's friends?" Xie Lian drops his head when he realizes that Y/n has joined San Lang in his smart remarks.
Not only does he have to worry about one silver tongue but two. "Yes San Lang is coming with us. He knows a lot about Crescent Moon Pass and that's sure to help me" Xie Lian explains with a nervous smile.
Mu Qing is interrupted when Feng Xin cuts him off, "The pathway is finished". Mu Qing, ever the prideful looks at the pathway and shrugs, "I've seen better". Which leads to Feng Xin and Mu Qing bantering again.
Y/n interrupts them by activating the pathway. "Stop bickering like an old married couple let's go" San Lang snickers softly, "I never thought of that, they do bicker like an old married couple don't they" The two officials glare at San Lang and y/n. They smile back. Xie Lian only knows y/n is smiling because of his crow feet.
They all go through the portal. Xie Lian lets out a laugh, knowing that he's going to have to deal with all of the four's antics on their journey. Xie Lian is happy with his circus though.

"A short thing from the POV of a newly ascended god or new ghost city resident third wheeling to hualian blatantly flirting on the job"
Tumblr media
Y/n followed His Highness, The Crown Prince of Xianle, and the famous Crimson Ghost King, Hua Cheng, through a calm and colorful forest. It was a beautiful sunny autumn afternoon in the mortal realm: birds sang, trees swayed gently with the wind and sun shone through the red leaves. Y/n sighted when he heard Hua Cheng and Xie Lian clearly flirting, again. The Prince and the King, who sat a few meters away from him, beside each other, laughed and smiled like fools while complimenting each other.
Y/n cursed Ling Wen for sending him with His Highness. What happened you ask? A dangerous evil spirit escaped from Heaven again. His Highness and y/n were sent to catch it before it could do any harm to mortals. Unfortunately, of course Crimson Rain Sought Flower had to tag along. Where is His Highness, there is The Crimson Ghost. Almost everyone in the three realms knows about their close relationship, even the newcomers like himself who had ascended only 7 months ago catch up to this quickly. Now he felt like a third wheel behind them. Only watching the two love sicks shamlessily teasing and blushing.
"San Lang, please. You don't have to," smiled Xie Lian to Hua Cheng who is putting a little red maple leaf behind the Prince's ear. He had a handful of little leaves and one by one decorating His Highness's brown hair with them. Hua Cheng smiled at him warmly, "Gege, have I ever told you, that you look like a freshly grown tulip in red?" he put his fingers under his chin and gently turned his head to face him. "Red suits you." Xie Lian blushed and chuckled, "Not as much as you. San Lang looks the best in red." They both chuckled at that. Y/n just sat there few meters away, looking at them with bored expression and cringed a little at their little moment and sighted. Hua Cheng saw that and turned to him annoyed, "If you're so bored why don't you go back to Heaven? We can finish this mission with Gege alone." "San Lang," The Prince warned silently. "Y/n is a new martial god and needs mission experience. He has to tag along, he was originally assigned to help me, remember?" Xie Lian smirked, referring to Hua Chang coming along without invitation or warning. The King just gave a look to y/n to shut him up and continued putting maple leaves into Xie Lian's hair.
After traveling a few more hours it was already dark. They set up their sleeping place, of course Xie Lian and Hua Cheng shared a bed. Y/n was ready to fall asleep when a few meters away he could hear soft whispers of the two other companions.
"Gege, are you cold? Do you need anything?" Hua Cheng whispered. Xie Lian chuckled, "San Lang, I'm alright. Thank you for worrying." y/n sweat dropped at this. "You know Gege, ones we finish here we should go back to Paradise Manor, do some calligraphy lessons and maybe even sleep togather in my b-" "CAN YOU TWO SHUT THE FUCK UP, MY GOOD HEAVENS!"

for the ask game, an au where HuaLian's "first" meeting didn't happen during the ghost bridegroom case, or maybe a different way it could have gone (I've just started the tgcf novel so I'm very excited to see you tgcf posting :D)
1 - About 400 years after Xie Lian was kicked out from the heavens for the second time, his bad luck led him straight to Ghost City and he gets involved into an accident that causes a ridiculous amount of costly damage. Half of the city wants his head on a pike and he is about to fight his way out of this mess when he is offered to work in order to reimburse his debt. Xie Lian finds it fair enough, tries several physical jobs in which he's good but that doesn't make enough money, until he finds the one job that should get him out in less than ten years: host. (Do not question how hosts can exist in this setting.)
2 - Does Xie Lian have any idea of what he is doing? Absolutely not. He still manages to be the most popular host in the entire city. Because he is ridiculously beautiful but also because he is just so nice with everyone??? He genuinely listens to people?
3 - Some time later, Hua Cheng comes back to Ghost City after one of his "Let's look for Danxia" trip and is in one hell of a bad mood because he once again failed to find him. So he is absolutely furious when he hears about a random nobody using the Flower Crowned Martial God's appearance to make some cash. His. God's. Appearance. This is unforgivable. He immediately goes to the establishment, under a disguise, in order to trap then to inflict some horrible karmic punishment on whoever is using a fake skin that will be undoubtedly a pale copy of the crown prince of Xianle... which is why Hua Cheng is taken completely by surprised by Xie Lian's sheer radiance when they met. None of that smooth San Lang business where he psyched himself for a week straight while Black Water and Yin Yu listened to his breakdown over his god's beauty. He didn't have the time to vent all his simpness out of his system and that first meeting almost dissipates the poor guy.
4 - Hua Cheng starts to visit Xie Lian daily, officially to confirm his identity because that could be a mole or an assassin sent by his enemy and because there is 0,001% that someone managed to create a perfect skin of the crowned prince of Xianle. He never wears the same appearance twice (coincidentally, his various disguises are always beautiful and stylish) and is unaware that Xie Lian sees through them every single time.
5 - Hua Cheng keeps giving incredibly expensive gifts to Xie Lian because it's what you're supposed to do when you see a host, right? At least, until Yin Yu points out that if he keeps doing that, Xie Lian will reimburse his debt and leaves by next month.
+ 1 - E-Ming doesn't care about Hua Cheng being a fool and keeps jumping in Xie Lian's lap after escaping a certain ghost king. Xie Lian adores it.

translated my favorite scene from the revised ver of book 1 :3 qi rong's lair arc!
--
“Don’t chase him, give him some time to calm down. At this moment, he won’t listen to any reason.” Hua Cheng said.
It wasn’t that Xie Lian didn’t understand this. He stood there for awhile before calmly saying, “Why did you have to do this?”
Xie Lian felt a sudden burst of anger surge up. He didn’t even know who the anger was directed towards.
Hua Cheng reached out, seemingly wanting to put his hand on Xie Lian’s shoulder, but Xie Lian brushed him off, saying, “Before, he only hated me! If he hates me then he hates me, do you know how many people despise me? He’s far from the only one!Now everything’s great, he knows that the person that he so worked hard for was cursing him! Must he now believe that everything I’ve taught him was all fake, all in vain, all lies?”
Hua Cheng didn’t say anything. Xie Lian suddenly felt like he couldn’t stand it. Couldn’t stand anything, couldn’t stand how he had senselessly lost control, couldn’t stand how Hua Cheng was just quietly watching him. He covered his face. “You should leave.”
Hua Cheng didn’t move. Xie Lian clutched his head. “You should leave! Think of it as me begging you to leave, alright?”
Only then did Hua Cheng speak. “Alright.”
He seemed to disappear without a sound.
Xie Lian finally felt more at ease, but he didn’t know if there was anything else he could do. He harshly swept his arm out, wanting to release the ugly knot of emotions that had built up in his chest. However, a small golden object ended up flying out of his sleeve.
Watching it fly out of the entrance of the Royal Tomb and down the cliff, Xie Lian was alarmed. Silently crying out, ‘Oh no!’, Xie Lian didn’t think twice before reaching out and jumping down. Who knew, while he was in mid-air, a hand abruptly pulled him back. As soon as his feet touched the ground, Xie Lian saw who had arrived and blurted out, “San Lang, I lost the flower!”
Hua Cheng’s arm circled his waist. “If it’s lost it’s lost, it’s not like it was anything valuable.”
That speck of gold had already disappeared, but the grip on his waist grew tighter. Xie Lian fretted, “I can’t lose it, it was…”
It was the flower that Hua Cheng had won at the temple fair for him.
Xie Lian was anxious enough that his whole body had broken out in cold sweat, and his soul was pulled back into his body. At this moment, he suddenly realized that he didn’t know when Hua Cheng had actually left and then come back. Thinking about the nasty way he had treated Hua Cheng before, Xie Lian said blankly, “San Lang, you…didn’t leave.”
Hua Cheng was silent. Xie Lian thought about the undue words he had said to him and felt even more guilty, unable to say any more.
After awhile, Hua Cheng sighed delicately. “Since gege doesn’t want me, why would he want a flower that I gifted?”
Xie Lian immediately rebuked. “It’s not that I don’t want you! It’s absolutely not.”
“But gege just told me to leave.”
“…”
“It was like this before too. No matter how many times I called for you, you cast me aside and ran away.”
When he phrased it like this, Xie Lian thought that Hua Cheng must feel extremely wronged by him, and that he himself had gone way too far. He whispered, “I’m sorry…”
“I didn’t wish for His Highness to apologize to me.”
Particularly because of that, Xie Lian felt even more regretful. He sighed.
Hua Cheng said, “It was my fault.”
Xie Lian was shocked. “How is it your fault?”
Hua Cheng said, “I originally wanted to stay with gege until his injury had healed, and let Lang QianQiu come and find the Green Ghost. That worthless trash Qi Rong is unable to keep his cool, with some pushing and pulling he would’ve ended up revealing everything. But I didn’t expect gege to have a tracking talisman that led to Lang Qianqiu’s position, and even send you here as well. And now it’s become like this.”
Xie Lian sighed again. “What did you have to do with it? It was me who messed things up.”
Hua Cheng said, “It wasn’t your fault. If you hadn’t taken the blame, past and present grudges would’ve pushed the country into perpetual turmoil. One life in exchange for generations of peace, what wrongs did you commit? If it was me, I would’ve been far more ruthless. Listen to me, it wasn’t your fault.“
Xie Lian sat on the ground. After a long while, he finally whispered, “I just think, it shouldn’t have been like this.”
Hua Cheng listened quietly. Xie Lian muttered, “I just think, if someone were to extend their hand in kindness, it shouldn’t end in this way. I’m afraid he won’t be able to handle it, I’m afraid he’ll change. I just…”
He himself had already suffered this enough, and didn’t want others to go through the same.
As the State Preceptor FangXin, he had no past and no name, and taking responsibility for the Gilded Banquet Massacre would lead Lang QianQiu to believe that he had been betrayed by only a single person. But if the culprit was in fact the resentful spirits that Lang QianQiu had worked so hard to cleanse, then it would’ve been the ultimate disillusionment.
So when Qi Rong gave him that suggestion, Xie Lian could only heed his threat and pick up the sword to fight Lang QianQiu and provoke his unfettered retaliation.
However, Hua Cheng said, “But you can’t pull the wool over his eyes forever. He would’ve eventually seen the true nature of this world.”
He sat down next to Xie Lian. “Besides, if you truly value him this much, then why can’t you trust him?
Xie Lian lifted his face from his arms. Hua Cheng continued indifferently, “If he’s really the one that you’ve chosen, then he won’t lose himself to resentment. Even if he wished to destroy the whole world before, in the end he’ll still do what he must do.”
Xie Lian looked at him, then suddenly said, “I think you should still go.”
“Why?”
Xie Lian spoke without any rhyme or reason. “Actually…I’m a pestilence god. If you get close to me you’ll experience misfortune, so I think that it would be better if we didn’t remain friends.”
Hua Cheng looked at him and sighed. “Gege, you’re being silly.”
Xie Lian insisted. “Have you not noticed? Since we’ve gotten to know each other, you’re always bringing me good fortune, but I’ve been inflicting nothing but misfortune on you.”
“No.”
“I’m being serious, if we keep going on like this, I’m afraid that one day…”
All of a sudden, Hua Cheng gripped his hand hard. He said, almost tenderly, “Your Highness, it’s not your fault.”
He continued, “You’ve already tried your hardest. No one else is able to surpass you, I know this.”
Whether or not he was right, Xie Lian didn’t know. But he knew for a fact that no one had ever comforted him in such a warm and resolute way.

makin my way through the new tgcf edition(!!!) and one thing i noticed that doesn’t come across in the english translation is how much the ghost groom plotline is clearly just meant to frame our first impression of hua cheng.
the phrase for ‘ghost groom’ is 鬼新郎 (gui xin lang)— the same 郎 in san lang (三郎). ‘red wedding palanquin’ is 红花轿 (hong hua jiao) — literally “red flower palanquin”. then obviously hua cheng appears and escorts xie lian out of the palanquin, and even begins to lift the veil. the villain turns out to not be a groom at all, so the entire point of the misdirect was to create this association
so when hua cheng rolls up five minutes later, dressed in red, and introduces himself as ‘san lang’, to the reader there’s a huge blinking sign over his head reading
HUSBAND!!!! GHOST HUSBAND!!!!

Hello. There is a cat AGAIN. CW for animal death I guess, because it's a ghost cat, but it is being loved and cherished and there's no details.
----
Hua Cheng could never begrudge Xie Lian’s kindness. It was one of the things he adored about him, that he found so special. Among all the gods in the realm of heaven, in Hua Cheng’s opinion, only Xie Lian was good enough to deserve to watch over the prayers of the common people.
But lately, and he’d never admit this to Xie Lian, lest the other man think he’d done something wrong, which he hadn't, Xie Lian’s kindness had come at a disadvantage.
It had only been a couple weeks since Xie Lian had come back to Paradise Manor with the tiny black and white cat in his arms. It wasn’t a normal cat, but a ghost cat that had wandered to the entrance of Ghost City. Xie Lian had found him on the way back from a meeting with the heavenly court. Hua Cheng did not know what had befallen a friendly domestic cat that would cause it to return as a wandering soul, nor was he sure he wanted to know, but Xie Lian had not been able to resist its plaintive mews.
And so now the cat, a little girl Xie Lian had named Jiahao, had free reign of Paradise Manor. The truth was, Hua Cheng was actually very happy Xie Lian had felt comfortable enough to bring the cat home without even asking beforehand. It showed he viewed Hua Cheng’s home as just as much his home, and that he fully understood, believed, and accepted that everything that belonged to Hua Cheng also belonged to him. He knew the Xie Lian he had met again years before would not have been able to do that.
Xie Lian doted on the creature. She was a ghost cat, he reasoned, so she could eat whatever she wanted and it wouldn’t matter. This meant that if the cat asked for it, she got it. This was also fine. Hua Cheng wanted him to be happy. He would just get more food if they ran out.
The bigger problem was that the cat clung to him like a particularly stubborn shadow. There was no time at which the cat wasn’t by Xie Lian’s side. He couldn’t even take a bath without Jiahao coming in and reaching in to playfully splash the surface. She slept with him, she ate with him, she bathed with him, she relaxed with him, and she even went out with him, walking alongside him dutifully. He imagined if E-ming had been a cat, it might act a little bit like Jiahao (though Jiahao, to her credit, was much quieter and mellower).
In short, Hua Cheng missed Xie Lian. He missed having his full attention and cuddling with him and Xie Lian only having eyes for him, and he also missed sex, because it was hard to have sex when there was a cat in bed with you. And he was trying to be patient, because the cat made him happy, and Xie Lian’s happiness was tantamount to everything, but it was becoming difficult.
Was he jealous of a cat? Yes. A ghost cat, even, but as he himself was a ghost, he supposed that was irrelevant.
Xie Lian, to his credit, did finally notice. It had been Hua Cheng’s fault; he’d accidentally dropped his nonchalant front and scowled when Jiahao got with them one night. The cat licked both of them on the nose (she was sweet, he couldn’t deny), then nuzzled up to Xie Lian, coaxing him to open his arms so she could snuggle in them.
The scowl was, he imagined, quite dramatic. His brows were furrowed and his lips were drawn, and to anyone else, it might be frightening to have Crimson Rain Sought Flower looking at them that way (though to be fair, he was looking at the cat, not Xie Lian).
Xie Lian froze, and concern crossed his features. “San Lang, what’s wrong?” he asked. He was still petting the cat, but he did reach over and press his other palm to Hua Cheng’s cheek.
“Nothing, gege.” He shook his head. “I think I’m just tired.”
Xie Lian frowned. “San Lang, you rarely get tired. Please tell me what’s wrong.”
“We haven’t had sex for two weeks,” Hua Cheng managed after a few moments of silence. That is not what he’d meant to say.
The other man burst out into peals of laughter, and Hua Cheng thought, as always, that it was beautiful. “Why didn’t you just say something?”
He continued, despite his embarrassment. “Well, that cat is always here. I know you love that cat, but gege… it feels like you give her so much attention and…”
Xie Lian gasped. “Sang Lang, are you jealous of Jiahao?” There was a playful edge to his voice.
Hua Cheng sighed. Jiahao meowed.
“I just miss spending time with you alone.”
“You miss having my eyes on just you.” Xie Lian smiled, and he placed his other hand on Hua Cheng’s cheek as well, then squeezed. “I’m sorry. You give me so much, and in return I made my San Lang feel unloved.”
“You’ve given me more than enough.”
Xie Lian shook his head. “Poor Jiahao. She’s a lonely ghost who has clearly been through so much, and she just wants to stay by the side of someone who loves her.” He glanced down at the cat, who had already dozed off. “Maybe I like her so much because she reminds me of someone else.”
Hua Cheng’s mouth dropped open, and then he pursed his lips. “Gege…”
“But I hate that you’ve felt neglected, San Lang,” he continued. “I’ll try to be more conscious of this so I can take proper care of both of you.”
The other man shook his head. “Jiahao makes you happy. I’m glad you brought her back, gege.”
“Mhmmm,” Xie Lian replied, “but I don’t want any of my happiness to come at my San Lang’s expense. We’re married. We exist to make each other happy. It goes both ways.”
Hua Cheng nodded, then after a few seconds, spoke up again. “Can we have Yin Yu take her some nights?”
Xie Lian laughed again, beautiful. “Yes, and we can do whatever San Lang wants on those nights.”
“What about tonight?” he asked, and he leaned forward, attempting to ignore the cat between them so he could whisper in his husband’s ear. Xie Lian pressed a playful kiss to Hua Cheng’s cheek, interrupting his attempt at seduction.
“Not tonight. I’m not moving Jiahao when she’s already fallen asleep.”
Hua Cheng would have to look forward to tomorrow, but, he thought, that was fine. They had endless tomorrows.

Parallels and Details (part 1) in Paper Flowers for the God of Gods
OMG so the response to this fic has been PHENOMENAL, but I also wanted to show off talk about a lot of the little intricacies I put into this fic because I think this rivals A Matter of Time with how big-brained I had to be hahaha
Spoilers ahead for those who haven't made it to Chapter 3. If you wanna read this Hualian fic, you can find it here!
The more obvious parallels I put in are the parallels of their interactions with one another to HC’s flashbacks in Chapter 3:
Chapter 1 (End of chapter)
Xie Lian watched the man through the river as he turned his head towards Xie Lian, meeting his eyes through the river reflection. There seemed to be no judgement in his eyes, no aggression.
“You can call me San Lang.”
Chapter 3 (HC flashback)
Another laugh, and the flowers seemed to sway and brighten, as if bolstered by his joy. “You can call me Gege.” He winked.
Chapter 1 (before SL meets XL)
“Where did you come from…?” Xie Lian asked, bringing his face close to the butterfly. It fluttered its wings in greeting, walking around the Butterfly Weed, but it seemed to be paying more attention to Xie Lian than the flower it was perched on. “I have never seen anything like you before. You’re beautiful.”
[...]
“You think so?”
Chapter 3 (HC flashback)
“Where did you come from…?” He asked himself as he reached out to touch one of the dainty petals, snatching his hand back when they realized they were real. “I have never seen anything like you before. You’re beautiful.”
A red parasol shadowed him from the sun.
“You think so?”
Chapter 2 (When SL first meets XL)
“There you are,” San Lang smiled. The butterfly on his shoulder fluttered to Xie Lian’s forehead. “Just as I thought, you’re much more beautiful close up.”
Chapter 3 (HC’s flashback)
But the man bent down, and gently took Hong-er’s hands away, holding them. He met Hong-er’s eyes without fear. In fact, his smile widened. “There you are.” His eyes were so soft. “Just as I thought, you’re much more beautiful close up.”
Chapter 2 (first meeting of SL and XL)
Xie Lian winced. “Please don’t tease me.”
“Who’s teasing?”
Chapter 3 (HC’s flashback)
Hong-er pouted. “Please don’t tease me.”
The man poked his cheek. “Who’s teasing?”
Chapter 2 (every end of the section)
“You should go…” Xie Lian sighed as the sun started to set.
Chapter 3 (HC’s flashback)
Hong-er winced. “I think you should go.”
And besides that, I included little nods to the canon:
Chapter 2 (in the scene with the cherry blossoms)
“...sorry.” Xie Lian looked down, tightening his grip on the bag. “I’ll be right back.”
“No need to hurry.” San Lang raised a hand, and turned to leave.
Oh.
Well, not like Xie Lian expected anything else. He started to bring in the bag of cherry blossoms to his cottage, and returned to the bridge to get the second batch. Just as he picked up the second bag, E-ming fluttered in front of him.
>>Imitates the part when XL puts talismans on the entrance of the temple, and SL leaves, so XL thought he scared SL away, only for SL to come back with wood to help repair the house
Chapter 2 (scene with the juggling)
“San Lang teases me all the time.” Xie Lian replied, before juggling the balls in place, his hands effortlessly catching and tossing balls. Perhaps, in another life, he would have been a good street performer.
>>we know that XL was a busker during the last 800 years in canon, I believe juggling was one of the skills he picked up as a street performer.
Only once he managed to get the one-up on Xie Lian, but it was only because he got Xie Lian flustered at the story of a Heavenly Official who tried to catch a ghost groom by pretending to be a bride, but was so ugly that the bait didn’t work, and “oh, if Gege was the bride I bet every ghost would fall to your feet and beg for your hand in marriage!”
Xie Lian got him back by saying “only if my groom is as handsome as San Lang.”
>>Little nod to the ‘marriage’ scene because I couldn’t put it in the fic
Chapter 2 (scene with Pei Ming)
“Shhh!” Xie Lian chastised, but there was no heat. It was just instinct.
San Lang stuck out his tongue playfully.
>>insipired by that scene in the donghua where SL tricks people into bowing to the tombstone in the cave.
Chapter 3 (HC flashback)
A red parasol shadowed him from the sun.
>>XL shadowing HC from the sun, like how in canon HC protects the flower from the blood rain
And of course, SL giving his ashes (and saying it’s nothing), and the dice.
And finally, the parallels of the characters.
He Xuan is both a parallel of HC and XL, with HC going up into heaven with his own undercover mission, but as opposed to HX, his is a mission to be with the one he loved versus HX who is trying to learn the weakness of the one he hates
HC and XL swap places in the time between HC’s flashback and XL’s present. In HC’s flashback, XL was the one full of color and beauty and light, but in the current time, it is now HC who is full of those things while XL has been dulled.
HC’s garden in paradise manor consists of the flowers XL gave him when they first met, saying they’re his siblings.
More are going to crop up in the future and I'm so excited for you all to read it <3

I Would Die A Thousand Times...
I Would Die a Thousand Times
Heaven Offical’s Blessing sickfic Headcannon in the works because yeah:
San Lang getting ill (despite not breathing or having a heartbeat) and Xia Lian cares for him.
I’ll post later if anyone is interested.
Thoughts in progress - sorry for all the jumbled mess... set during series :)
“You needn’t worry yourself, your Highness. You’ve already shown me more than enough kindness. More than I’m deserving of.”
“Please, don’t speak of such conjecture about my dear San Lang. He is worth every bit of kindness I give and even more…”
“Please,” San Lang whispered, his head bowed slightly, “you should leave. Before I ruin you.”
Xia Lian’s fingers brushed against his temple, carding several loose sweaty strands of black hair he’d missed away from the other’s face. He spoke softly, his voice gentle but firm, “Then ruin me. Hurt me… if you want. Kill me, if you’d like. But I’m not leaving… I’ve waited over 800 years to find you again. And I’m not letting you go so easily.”
San Lang winced as the words met his ears…
Fever
Distorted reality?
Right eye blind
Passes out.
SL- Please, eat something.
XL- And you?
I’m not very hungry right now.
Hmm. What if we share then?
San Lang’s smile falters slightly before returning, reaching forward and taking the chopsticks, Xia Lian is too kind.
Picks out some things and eats slowly. Smiling every time Xia Lian makes eye contact.
San Lang? Are you alright?
Of course.
Are you sure? You’ve been rather quiet today. If something is wrong, please feel free to tell me.
This one is fine, your Highness. Just thinking.
I see. Care to share your thoughts?
Nightmare/ flashback – wakes up puking.
San Lang! Shh, it’s alright. You’re alright.
Apologies, your Highness. I’ll-
No, lay back down.
I-
Be a good boy. Do as your God commands.
It was a low blow, one that felt wrong and bitter in Xia Lian’s mouth, but one San Lang would follow, nonetheless.
Take off red robes.
Will you allow me to undress you further? The hot material can’t feel good against your skin.
No.
You will be more comfortable if-
This one doesn’t want Xia Lian to be disgusted.
I would never-
No.
SL has never denied XL of anything.
(dumps flowers out of vase from offering table)
I won’t need that.
Just in case…
Lays down, back turned away, starts drifting before he shoots up, grabbing vase/ puking. XL comforts.
San Lang, may I brush your hair?
Convo.
Will you rest now?
Only if XL will lay with this one.
Always.
High fever, boyish nightmare.
XL cooling
San Lang, hey. (eyes barely open, burning)
Your… H’ness? I-
Sh, it’s alright. You don’t need to talk, but I need to undress you further. Your fever is too high, and the extra clothing isn’t helping. I’m sorry.
Please… No, Xia L’n.
I’m truly sorry. I promise to be gentle.
Despite the disapproving whimpers escaping the other’s mouth, San Lang barely resisted, letting Xia Lian thread his arms out of his robes carefully. The God pulled the robe down slowly, trying to keep his breathing even as his eyes locked onto the copious amount of scars and tattoos, some recognized as talisman, others foreign. All, including Xia Lian’s name tattooed down his left forearm, in horrible, almost unreadable, handwriting.
San Lang, you must drink.
What if SL becomes afraid at one point? Reverting back to a boyish memory of him being beaten in the streets as a young child, jumping, etc., due to eye… ostracized.
San Lang, it’s alright. I’m not- I would never hurt you, San Lang.
Please don’t be afraid.

Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you’ve written, then pass on to at least five other writers. Let’s spread the self-love ❤
@naamah-beherit tagged anyone who wanted to do it and i figured what the heck? might as well 💕
1. in pursuit of warmth
Tianlang-jun is looking at him with a single eyebrow raised. The grace in his posture alone, the way he tilts his head and skin crinkles at the corners of his eyes…it’s mesmerizing to Zhuzhi-lang. Standing up straight already seems like such a feat. With heavy muscles and so many bones crammed beneath fragile skin, moving any small part of one’s body appears as an insurmountable task. And Tianlang-jun lifts the corners of his lips like it is the easiest thing in the world. Zhuzhi-lang can’t do any of that yet. But he has been given the chance to learn.
A Zhuzhi-lang introspective that begins when he's found by Tianlang-jun and follows his POV through the events of the novel.
2. as below, so above
“San Lang,” Xie Lian whispers while he lays his head on Hua Cheng’s shoulder, breath settling as sweat and spend still cools on their bodies. “Can I ask you something?” “Of course.” "Who did you ascend as?"
Before Hua Cheng was a ghost, he was a human. Before he was a king, he was a god. When Xie Lian grows curious about Hua Cheng’s brief foray into godhood, Hua Cheng offers up the idea of a playful guessing game with the promise of a special reward should Xie Lian figure out the type of god he might have been.
3. resilient flower; ascending flame (and other things that can survive burning)
Hope and fear intermingle in Xie Lian’s chest. His lips part once, twice. And then: “Wu Ming?” The young god lifts his head like a flower towards the sun. His single dark eye—hazy with pain—focuses on Xie Lian’s face. “Your Highness,” he says softly. Light spills through the cracks of his fingers, essence of divinity in place of the blood a ghost can no longer bleed.
Xie Lian doesn’t get kicked out of the heavens after his second ascension. Because of this, he is there to witness a nameless little ghost ascend. A canon-divergent WuLian AU.
4. When I Was Older
“Where would you like to go, Your Highness?” “The Palace of Yong’an,” Xie Lian stated with fierce destructive purpose. Xie Lian came to with a gasp, eyes flying open to the view of an unfamiliar ceiling. There was a pressure building within his skull, clouding his mind and making it difficult to grasp any singular thought long enough to pull it from the thick fog. All he could recall was… A broken down temple. A persistent ghost. A rage too potent to dare describe.
When Book4!Xie Lian and his post-canon counterpart mysteriously swap bodies, the two of them must figure out a way to switch back while dealing with the shock of their sudden displacement. With the help of their respective versions of Hua Cheng, and a couple of unlikely allies, will they manage to get home safely? Or will their past be a detriment to their future?
Featuring such hits as: Book 4!Xie Lian falling in love with his future husband, Wu Ming love hours, and Jun Wu third wheeling! Also pain. This one hurts, folks.
5. In Shadow of the Sun
Zhuzhi-lang presses himself lower. Twigs and rocks dig into the sensitive skin of his stomach but he pays the uncomfortable sensation no mind. He shuffles back to avoid the possibility of being seen. His efforts are in vain – the crisp snap of a thin branch below him cuts through the moisture laden night. The boy turns, his movement abrupt. His hand cups the hilt of the sword at his hip. He’s already drawn it out with a slight metallic click when his deep black eyes meet Zhuzhi-lang’s muddy-yellow slitted ones. Time seems to slow as the two of them regard each other. And then moonlight glints off the boy’s sword.
The altercation in Luzhi Cave is not the first time Gongyi Xiao has met the snake man of Bailu Forest and it will not be the last. A canon-divergent AU.
and i will be tagging anyone who wants to participate as well! rec your works! let me see them!!

TGCF Audio Drama: Snippets from the Revised Edition
The audio drama has released samples of content that was adapted from the revised novel edition! Below is my quick translation attempt.
Link: https://www.missevan.com/sound/5743931
… … … … …
HC: Rather than begging others, it’s better to do it yourself. If you want to crawl out of the abyss, what’s the use in relying on others? Other people cannot come to your rescue every time. 求人不如求己,若想爬出深渊,指望旁人有什么用?旁人总不会次次来救。
XL: That’s why gods are needed. 所以才需要神啊。
HC: But if everyone wishes to be saved by gods, what of the gods themselves? Do gods not tire? 可若人人都指望神来救,那神要怎么办?神不会累吗?
XL: …!
… … … … …
Crowd: That youth is so talented! 那少年好厉害呀!
Crowd: Who is that? 那是谁啊?
Crowd: Such a handsome young man! 好俊的少年啊!
Crowd: He reached the top so quickly! 一下子就登顶了!
Crowd: He picked it! 他摘下来了!
Crowd, cheering: So impressive!
HC: Gege. 哥哥。
XL: Congratulations. 恭喜你了。
HC: Here. 喏。
XL: Gold flower…this is for me? 金花……这是给我的?
HC: It’s not as if I know any other gods. Who else could I give it to? 我又不认识别的神仙,不给你给谁呢?
HC: Although, this thing isn’t worth anything. If gege doesn’t like it, just throw it away. 不过这东西不值钱,哥哥若不喜欢便扔了吧。
XL: No! I like it very much! Thank you. 不!我很喜欢!谢谢。
XL, thinking: Speaking of which, I can barely remember how long it’s been since I last received flower offerings… (说起来,我都记不清有多少年没被供过花了……)
HC: Since gege has accepted my flower, shouldn’t my wish be granted as well? 既然哥哥收了我的花,那是不是也要实现我的愿望呢?
XL: You’re so all-capable; can there even be a wish I can help you with? 你这么神通广大,还有我能帮你实现的愿望?
HC: Don’t be so sure. No matter how capable I am, there are some things in this world for which I am powerless. 那可不一定。世上有些事,我在神通广大也无能为力。
XL: Then what is your wish? Perhaps I really can offer the best of my meager assistance. 那你的愿望是什么?说不定我真能略尽绵薄之力。
… … … … …
XL: To have all beneath heaven flow in accordance with heart’s will is the martial path of a champion; upright and confident; thus enduring. You are only attacking wildly — do you take yourself as a mercenary with a death wish? 天下归心流乃王者之武道,方正大气,方能久远。你一味疯打,当自己是舔刀尖卖命的死士?
Lang Qianqiu: Shut up! 闭嘴!
XL: What’s with you? Did you forget all the basics? You’re leaving openings from head to toe. At this rate, you will die by my hand within three moves. 你怎么回事,要义全忘光了?你浑身上下都是破绽,再这样下去不出三招你就要死在我手里。
LQQ: What right do you have to lecture me?! 你凭什么教训我!
XL: Three. Arm, retract! 三。手臂,收!
XL: If I had struck with the edge of my sword rather than the flat, your arm would already be cut off. 如果我这一剑不是一剑身平拍,而是一剑锋直斩,你的手已经断了。
LQQ: Are you done yet— 你有完没完——
XL: Two. Centre of gravity, tilted! 二。重心,偏了!
LQQ: What are you fighting for?! 你在打什么!
XL: You’re the one that wanted to fight! 是你自己要打的!
XL: One. Beneath your feet, unstable! 一。足下,飘了!
XL: Three moves have passed. You are already dead. 三招已过,你已经死了。
… … … … …
HC: Is that all you wanted to say? 你要说的就是这个?
XL: What else did you want me to say? 你还想我说什么?
HC: For instance, ask whether I am human. 比如,问我是不是人。
XL: Huh?
XL: Why would I ask that? 为什么要问这个?
HC: Is there no need? 没必要吗?
XL: Is there a need? Did you act like a human in any way? 有必要吗?你有哪一点表现得像个人吗?
HC: ……
XL, chuckling: San Lang, you’re very powerful but I’ve never met a ghost less serious about disguising themselves than you. 三郎,虽然你很厉害,但你真是我见过伪装得最不上心的鬼了。
HC: Then, if you knew I was powerful, why did you still jump down after me? 那你明知道我很厉害,为什么还要跟着往下跳?
XL: Did you think I jumped because I thought you were weak? 难道你以为我往下跳是因为觉得你很弱吗?
HC: Then why would you worry? 那你为何要担心?
XL: I was worried because it was you. What does your weakness or strength have to do with it? 我担心你当然只是因为你,和你是弱是强有什么关系?
XL: Besides, making friends is based on compatibility, not someone’s identity. 而且,与人相交,看的是投缘不投缘,又不是看身份。
XL: If I like you, you could be a beggar and I would still like you. If I don’t, you could be an emperor and I would still dislike you. Shouldn’t that be how it is? So, there was no need to ask, right? 我若喜欢你,你便是乞丐我也喜欢,我若讨厌你,你就是皇帝我也讨厌,不因该是这样吗?所以,没必要问吧。

For the three sentence fic: wangxian or hualian, setting: in a garden!
Ah, thank you for sending a prompt! I might ultimately do both of these but all my Wangxian ideas were sex pollen so instead...
(Hualian, post-canon, fluff)
(definitely not three sentences. unedited.)
"Open your eyes." Hua Cheng's deep voice rumbled so close to Xie Lian's ear that Xie Lian could feel it as a tremble down his spine. For the barest moment, Xie Lian still didn't obey; his other senses were on high alert and even without vision he recognize how unusual this place - wherever it was - must be, for the smell was strong, beautiful, and achingly familiar. Xie Lian couldn't put his finger on what about it he knew, but in his bones, he knew this scent.
Xie Lian opened his eyes.
A field of pristine white flowers and bright spring-green leaves stretched out before them. The light breeze stirred the blossoms as they turned their faces toward the sun. There was an instant when Xie Lian didn't understand the significance of the field, but then the flowers' rich aroma combined with what he saw, and he gasped.
Once, centuries ago, these flowers had carpeted the fields of Xianle every spring.
Once, centuries ago, a small boy had left a single, picked bloom as a modest offering to the flower-crowned god.
Once...
…but…
He didn't know what these blossoms were called; when he'd been crown prince of Xianle, such a small matter had been beneath his interest. And after Xianle fell, these flowers had fallen with the kingdom: Xie Lian hadn't seen a single one.
This flower had died with Xianle.
"How...?" Twisting in Hua Cheng's arms, Xie Lian turned to see his face, meeting Hua Cheng's smug look what I accomplished, gege expression with one of wonder. "Where...?" Thoughts crowded to the fore in Xie Lian, but he could hardly bare to examine most of them, much less express them. "You should be careful gifting me property," Xie Lian finally managed, trying to keep his tone light. "Aren't you afraid I'll set it on fire again?"
Xianle burned in the spring, flames climbing into the sky, smoke obscuring the stars and moon as they engulfed the city, the farms, the fields and forests.
The lovely floral scent turned rancid as the flowers burned.
Trying to suppress a shudder, Xie Lian forced his expression into a smile despite his instinct to grimace.
"Stop," murmured Hua Cheng. Smile and grimace both were subsumed by confusion that Xie Lian expressed with a head tilt. "If they make you unhappy, you can express that. I don't mind."
"No," Xie Lian exclaimed more forcefully than he meant to. Allowing a tremble to course through him, he shook his head and repeated, "no, that's not it. They're beautiful."
"But...?"
"Why aren't you afraid that I'll set them on fire again?" Xie Lian mumbled.
"Because if it burns, it burns." Hua Cheng shrugged. Xie Lian blinked at him. "And after they've burned, I'll plant them again - again and again, every time. As long as a single bulb remains, the flowers can always be regrown."
"San Lang..."
"Isn't that life, gege?" Pulling Xie Lian closer, Hua Cheng wrapped his arms around Xie Lian's waist, tucked his chin onto Xie Lian's shoulder, laid a hand flat and steady and supportive on Xie Lian's belly. "Everything burns. It's what we do after the flames have subsided that shows our character."
"By that measure, I've performed pretty dismally," said Xie Lian with an awkward chuckle.
"By that measure, by any measure, you've survived, you've endured, you've rebuilt and rebuilt over and over again," Hua Cheng countered. "And you've always done it alone. You're amazing, gege. And whatever happens, whatever burns next, I swear to you: you'll never have to sift through the ashes alone ever again."
"Oh, San Lang." Xie Lian turned just enough to smear a kiss over Hua Cheng's cheek. "I love you."
"So much, always." Hua Cheng shifted to meet a second kiss with their lips; warmth and comfort and support glowed through Xie Lian.
A breeze stirred the flowers, their rich aroma filling the air.
If it burns, it burns.
The stalks rustled against each other, making a light, pleasing, soothing sound.
What can't San Lang and I rebuild?
Sunshine dazzled over the field, rendering the white blooms incandescent, the green leaves translucent, their shared embrace hot.
As long as he's by my side, what can't we do?
And together, they bloomed.
(send me an ask with a ship and a setting/trope/kink/genre and I'll write a ficlet that will definitely not be only three sentences but will hopefully be under 1k words)

Tiny Xianle Quartet
Just imagine you’re walking around with tiny dianxia nestled in your front shirt pocket. He would wave “hello!” to anyone passing by with the friendliest smile! Just tiny dianxia with his mini bamboo hat and simple, white robes happily nestled near your chest.
Then, as you continue your stroll, you see a lone dandelion with the stem still attached floating nearby.
“Huh, that’s weird,” you think, then blow the dandelion away.
The distant sound of a high-pitched “Gegeeeee” can be heard. It turns out to be tiny HC who was using the dandelion to catch the wind and bring him to dianxia, but his plans are thwarted by the giant human who decided to blow him in the opposite direction :(
(XL: 😳😳 “I thought I heard-“
HC: 😭😭😭)
HC crash-lands in the grass, tumbling over himself a couple times. Once he’s right-side-up, he can only watch as the big human continues walking forward with tiny XL in tow.
HC resorts to scurrying after the big human, smacking away the large blades of grass that dare stand in his way. When you finally notices a little creature trailing behind, they scoop HC up in one hand.
“GYAHH- UNHAND ME, MORTAL,” HC demands, banging his little fists on the hand.
XL lets out a surprised squeak. “San Lang!”
“Gegeee! I’m here! I’m here to save you!” HC exclaims, still struggling in his entrapment.
“It’s okay! I’m not in any danger!” XL replies. “But I’m glad you’re here anyway!”
XL turns to you, and places his hands together in a pleading gesture: “Can you just put him in the pocket with me? I promise he won’t cause you any trouble.”
You nod in understanding. With one last indulgent squeeze of the tiny creature, the human drops HC into their shirt pocket.
Twin grunts of “oofs!” are heard, along with a small shuffling inside the pocket.
Immediately, two smol heads pop out from inside the pocket.
“Thank you for accommodating him. Between you and me, San Lang loves walks. He’s secretly very grateful to tag along,” XL says.
(HC, at the human: 🥊🥊
XL: “San Lang, stop being rude!”)
Even as tiny fists poke harmlessly against your chest, you can’t help but laugh whole-heartedly. Tiny dianxia just has that effect on you.
“It’s my pleasure,” you say. “The more, the merrier.”
(HC: “did u just call me merry-“ 😡
XL quickly covers HC’s mouth.)
The trio continues their walk, passing many flowers and a stream that shimmers aqua blue.
When you walk under a cherry tree, you suddenly feel two thumps on the top of your head. Pairs of tiny feet seem to be padding along your hairline. You lift a hand up to rub your head, but the tiny feet keep evading their reach.
HC and XL are too busy whispering among themselves to pay attention to the commotion upstairs.
A heavy sigh escapes your lips. An itch is developing on their scalp that really needs to be scratched. You decide to shake your head side-to-side, and using both hands, grab hold of two more smol bodies in your clutch.
MQ: “you idiot, why’d you jump down too? You gave us away!”
FX: “it wasn’t me! That bird shook the branch and caused our cherry to fall”
XL pauses his story: “oh heyy guys! What brings you here?”
You look at XL with a raised eyebrow.  “More of your…friends?”
HC: “hey I’m not just a-“
XL: “Yes, more friends! Though I could’ve sworn they were busy doing something else…” 🤔
MQ huffs while FX glares at the rascal in red clinging to XL like sticky tape.
“What should I do with them?” You ask XL.
To FX and MQ’s horror, HC leans close to whisper in XL’s ear.
XL: “Hmm, it’s a little tight in here, so maybe-“
Cut to the next scene where FX and MQ are unceremoniously shoved into the human’s back pockets.

Thoughts I had during TGCF S1 Ep 12
Ok then, last Episode of Season 1 let’s make this though reaction compilation count!
-We are back in Puqi village folks
-Ooooh pure domestic moments!!!!
-I freaking love how Xie Lian says ‘The Crimson Rain Sought Flower’ Howard Wang’s voice could act as my new sleeping aid
-No he hasn’t called him ‘his highness’ throughout this whole
-Oh yeah San Lang does treasure you dude
-Heck Yeah he was your groom, and I even officiated that ceremony in my first reaction! (I’ll type that iconic quote near the end of this Episode peeps!)
-It’s totally the first possibility ‘nuff said
-Never change San Lang, never change
-It was the lack of the heartbeat in Ep 9
-Hua Cheng didn’t strike fear into my heart as well
-Oh Pot!Yue unintentionally cockblocked em!  Pot + Ban Yue = Pot!Yue
-She’s rolling own her own and he opened the door for her!
-She got herself upright in the pot!
-Ban Yue’s in their custody my heart. (MXTX you probably won’t see this but Hua Cheng and Xie Lian have been through so much in that 8 book series, please let them be parents!!!  That’s just my prayer that probably won’t get answered)
-She still calls him ‘General Hua’
-I don’t think Pei Xiu’s a bad person either
-Ban Yue deserves all the head pats!!!!
-Don’t worry he does forgive you after what you’ve done
-Oh Xie Lian gets flustered at his past dream being brought up in front of San Lang
-Aw San Lang still likes his past goal!
-The way Ban Yue moves in the pot it’s so cute!!!!
-She was so young and innocent AAAAAHHHH!!!
-Honey I don’t even think you were being dramatic for a minute when you were a soldier
-And now she made the pot hop!
-Ban Yue my beloved!
-I love how I’m good at remembering stuff like Ban Yue
-I don’t think it’s nonsense at all honey, I think you’re amazing in whatever personality you display right now the good ones and the bad ones - prolly me and Hua Cheng’s opinions on Xie Lian, for HC it’s romantic, but for me it’s platonic
-Facepalm
-Awwww Baby Ban Yue
-At least it put an end to the war
-What have I been doing all this time either???  Aww man…
-Ban Yue, I think you should keep living despite all the mistakes you’ve made… other than that I also don’t know the answer like Xie Lian
-And Ban Yue’s now watching the moon and stars outside
-Aww San Lang got concerned!
-San Lang is dropping facts people
-San Lang is touch starved again!!! It’s official!!!  I am a Touch starved!San Lang truther TGCF fandom!!!
-Oh yeah it does look nice Xie Lian
-Oh you’ll see the real him, soon enough dude
-Oh no the Vegetable stir fry got overcooked!  I am not even gonna touch it when it’s all purple and blanched!
-Later that night
-And there was only one bed!  Oh my gods there was only one bed!!!!!!
-Ghosts are more freer than Heaven is
-Best boss ever!!!  San Lang obviously
-Hua Cheng really did make a name for himself among the other Ghost Kings
-Oooh he’s giving Qi Rong a bad name and defeated him good!
-More about Black Water later folks
-Aw man the way James Cheek says bologna, Wait a minute how do the Chinese know about bologna sausage, Ah right the Silk Road (I just like to imagine TGCF takes place around the time of the Silk Road capiche?)
-That’s cause they’ve got a ton of officials up there
-Oh yeah San Lang, valid stick it to all those gods
-They really do have the vibes of two concerned fathers (see what’d I tell ya, Hualian is just pure paternal material)
-Aww he liked his goal about saving the world!!!! AAAHH
-Aww and Xie Lian got all embarassed at his compliment
-Oh that was a really good opinion from San Lang!   He doesn’t think his goal is foolish at all!!!
-“What was life?”   My whole ass answer:…42?  (You guys’ll get the reference in the comments)
-Ohohoho now Xie Lian moved in closer!
-Honestly Xie Lian’s quote about him becoming someone’s new meaning in life does speak a lot about us as a society when looking up to famous living people like celebrities and what not
-I think he might be sitting next to you Xie Lian
-Well said, San Lang
-Their interactions added at least 8 years to my lifespan
-Oooohhhh!  Xie Lian talked about setting up boundaries
-Aww Xie Lian will love him no matter if he’s hideous or a monster he really does have the best standards from Ep 9!
-See boundaries!
-“I don’t buy it!  Good night!”  Awwww Xie Lian’s hot when he’s mad
-Oh he withdrew his hand when Xie Lian moved away
-Another Reason why Hualian works so well is that San Lang also Respects!  Xie Lian’s!  Boundaries (Yep still not getting involved with the Helluva Boss drama folks)
-Hua Cheng my beloved
-Oooh it was raining!
-Oh No San Lang’s gone
-Ban Yue’s back inside
-Ooooohhh what’s around Xie Lian’s neck
-It’s official!  That looks like an engagement ring people!
-Dude pass me the Aux cord!  Ya better not be playing mainstream garbage *Puts on Hong Jue at full blast and vibes like no tomorrow!*
-That confirms it he has seen Hua Cheng’s true form
-This line’s from my very first reaction post at the start of this season:  I now pronounce you both husband AND husband you may now kiss the gro-  I mean, bride!  (I should officiate more weddings as a living!)
-Aiaigasa! As a flashback one last time!
-Oh he’s running back to see if he returned inside!
-Get used to it people, this is just how he says ‘Gege’ in English, and honestly it’s kind of grown on me so no judging please!
-I wasn’t kidding when I said the kid Xie Lian saved would be important later on, called it~!
-It’s like they’re running towards each other AAAAAHHH!!!
-He really did paint him in his glory days
-Welp, see you guys later for Season 2!
-Ah the freaking rescue parallels
-*Casually continues to keep playing Hong Jue while wrapping up this whole reaction
-Man this was a long one!
Well that was Season 1.  I’m going to take a long break from doing these reaction posts, because I have an upcoming final project to complete in art, and I’ve got Christmas gifts to make.  So I’ll update the Thoughts I had on TGCF series once Season 2 finishes airing in Chinese and English See ya next time!

A HuaLian fanfic I'm writing
The morning sky was painted a light blue colour; the sun shone brightly over the cumulus clouds, making it a perfect picture to capture and put someone in a decent mood -at least for the morning- for the day. It was 6:00 am. There was a king sized black bed covered with silky, crimson comforters, and large pillows that seemed to be thrown about haphazardly in someone’s sleep.
The comforters moved slightly as a begrudging ‘Mmnnnng’ came from under them. Messy raven colored hair poked out from under the covers, along with an extremely pale hand. A loud RIIIIINNNGGG burst through the dark (and elegant) looking room, and just as soon as the alarm rang, it was thrown across the room (and it surprisingly didn’t break this time). An extremely pale body rose from the covers, muscles stretching out as the man arched his back while yawning.
His raven hair delicately fell down his back and onto the silk black sheets of his bed, and he threw his legs off the side of his. “Nng..” The man's deep voice grumbled, standing up and grabbing a towel off his night stand by his bed. Just as he started to walk across his room to go to his shower room, his phone started to buzz. Sighing, he picked it up.
Feng Xin
“Hello Feng Xin, what do you want? Why on god’s green earth are you calling me at 6:15 in the morning?” His voice sounded annoyed, like he was about to jump through the phone and tear Feng Xin a new one.
“Hey San Lang, I heard about… Your father passing on. Mu Qing and I just wanted to let you know that we’re here if you need to talk or help you take care of your little brother, Eming.”
San Lang gave a sigh, it slightly staggered as he was -unfortunately- reminded that his father’s funeral was today. He and his father were really close. His mom had died when he was 6, and that drove his father into a deep depression. He wasn’t able to remarry, but he did provide and do his best for his dear son and little brother.
“Thanks Feng Xin, Mu Qing. I’m going to stop by a flower shop and try to find a bouquet of flowers for my father..”
There was a silence on the other end as he heard a soft sigh.
“Be safe San Lang. Call us if you need anything.” BZZT.
Alone. San Lang gently set his phone down and just stood there, head bowed slightly. His crimson eyes stung as he brought a hand up to his eyes, gently rubbing them as tears ran down his face. I don’t have time for this he thought, rushing over to his bathroom to start a hot shower. San Lang had woken up early to get himself and his little brother ready for the funeral.
He felt overwhelmed, and tired. His only other best friend, mentor, and only dad had passed. Over some stupid illness too. He couldn’t even imagine how his little brother feels right now either. He was still so young. To grow up motherless, and now fatherless too.
~~~
After a few minutes of lazily washing, conditioning his hair and scrubbing his body and face, San Lang finally turned off the shower. When he stepped out, he wrapped a towel around his body and turned himself to face his mirror.
San Lang’s eyes were puffy and red, his body was lean and built in all the right places. His hair was long, almost reaching his butt, and his hands were firm. A frown played on his lips and the longer he stared, the more of his father he saw. Pale skin, raven skin, and crimson eyes.
Before he started letting tears fall loosely from his eyes, he quickly went back into his room. San Lang flipped on his lights, revealing the room to be painted a pretty black, small white dots around the whole room, and a black tuxedo laying neatly on his dark brown desk that was pushed against the wall.
Softly, he gave a small sight and got his boxers, and white shirt on. Begrudgingly, he walked towards the tuxedo. He was grateful that his bitch of a friend, Qi Rong, helped him and Eming get fitted. He was well off, sure, but Qi Rong was still close to him, and even though he was a prick 99.5% of the time, that 0.5% was the nice person that tried to cheer him and Eming up. That 0.5% also suggested a very nice, but small flower shop by the name of “Dianxia’s Flowers”.
The reviews were good, but it seems like over time, no matter how much dedication the owners had put in, it all decreased as time went on. According to Qi Rong, they still had a huge assortment of flowers -more than the most popular of flower shops too- and also did things like boutonnieres, corsages, and bouquets too.
Their son was apparently very proficient at getting things done, though he wasn’t the luckiest man in the world. San Lang fastened his slacks, and buttoned up his shirt and tucked it into his slacks. He wouldn’t put a blazer on just yet, he still had to go and wake his brother up, and to also make a quick breakfast.
~~~~~
San Lang walked down the hall and turned to the door on his left, and gently opened it. His brother was out cold, he looked so peaceful, so unaware of the world around him. San Lang gave a small smile before walking over to his brother and gently shaking him. “Emi, time to get up.” His little brother stirred slightly, slowly opening his light brown eyes and reaching his arms out for his older brother. “G’morning San Lang…” Eming yawned out, wrapping his arms around San Lang’s neck as his older brother held him. “Good morning Emi, you need to take a shower and get your tuxedo on.”
San Lang somberly told his little brother, walking back to his room to let his brother use his shower. Eming clung to his brother before being set down. “San Lang…” San Lang gave his brother another hug while trying to keep it together while Eming sobbed in his shoulder. “Eming, be a big boy for me and get in the shower, I’ll have your tux on your desk and make breakfast. Okay?”
He got no verbal response, only a teary sniffle and a nod.
~~~~~
San Lang went downstairs to start breakfast and as soon as he made sure Eming was in the shower, he got a call. He took the phone out of his pocket, only to see that the number was unknown. He watched it ring for a few seconds, then finally decided to answer.
“Hello, you’re speaking to Hua Cheng, to whom am I speaking with?”
The person on the other end was quiet for a second before responding with
“Hi, my name is Xie Lian a-and you purchased a bouquet of white lilies with Dianxia’s Flowers, is that correct?”
What a weird stutter, San Lang thought.
“Yes Mr. Xie Lian, that’s correct. I’ll be there around 8:30 to pick it up. Thank you.”
“See you then Mr. Hua Cheng.”
.
.
.
Silence filled the room as the man on the other end had hung up. Somehow, Xie Lian’s name and voice sounded familiar, but comforting at the same time. Never mind that, he had a breakfast to make.
San Lang took out a few pans, butter, eggs, bacon and potatoes and started to work his magic in the kitchen. His mother used to be a great cook and taught him a variety of things to cook like: hash browns, scrambled eggs, sunny side up eggs, fried bacon, etc..
 He missed her. Sang Lang scrambled the eggs and put them on two plates along with four pieces of bacon, two on Eming’s plate and 2 on his own plate. Now just for the hashbrowns… Sang Lang thought, letting the potato patties fry.
~~~~~
By the time he was done, his little brother had come down from the stairs in his tuxedo. “Hey Big gege..” Eming muttered, sitting at the table where the breakfast had been set. “Hey Emi,” San lang started “We’re gonna have to hurry and eat. We’ve got to get… flowers.”
San Lang choked on his own words, his brother seemed to get it however.
Neither of them talked while eating, and his brother didn’t say anything when San Lang went to get his jacket and tie.
It was somber. All of it was just lifeless. When San Lang came back downstairs, his heart broke a little when he saw his little brother washing their plates; tears were streaming down his face and snot ran down his nose a little.
“Eming..” He rushed over to his brother and turned off the water, pulling his little brother into a hug. “The dishes can wait, I can do them.”
Eming nodded and cried into his brothers shoulder, San Lang only hugged him back let his own tears freely fall.
“I miss daddy.”
“Me too...”
~~~~~
San Lang locked the front door and walked over to his car. It wasn’t anything too fancy, but it was still nonetheless. Eming got in the passenger side and San Lang occupied the front seat, starting the car, and soon drove off.
Qi rong didn't mention the flower shop would be a little ways out, but it took an hour to get there. When the two brothers did however, they saw the light green shop. The front had rows of pink and white Casablanca flowers. The side of the store had moss growing around it, along with a small white cat running into the store. The white awning of the store had white Christmas light running across with little white and yellow flowers wrapping around it. It felt homey, very lively and aesthetically pleasing.
San Lang looked over and held his -bewildered- brother's hand, before walking into the store.
~~~~~
Inside the shop was filled with flowers. They were all organized, and well taken care of. Roses here, daisies there, it was pretty. The shop also has ferns, and exotic flowers and flower seeds and ribbons. There were pictures behind the counter that showed the bouquets, boutonnières, and corsages they did, what each flower symbolized, etc etc. It was all very pleasant, the music that played was very reminiscent of the 80s too. The lights were slightly dimmed to show the Christmas lights wrapped around the poles and the counter. To call it homey was an understatement.
Eming was deeply enthralled in everything here, and admittedly, so was San Lang. He had never seen such a beautiful flower shop a day in his life. He was 19, and had never seen such beautiful, and such handsome corsages and boutonnières with so much effort put into them -and he had been to two of his high school proms too-.
“You must be Mr. Hua Cheng, correct?” San Lang shook out of his bedazzlement and turned to the young man at the counter.
Woah… San Lang felt hypnotized by this man’s beauty. He had bobbed, dark brown hair that framed his face. His eyes were a gorgeous golden brown honey pool that one could easily get lost in, and his smile was the cutest one he’d ever seen. It was apparent this clerk was a male, but with the right makeup and clothes, he could easily be mistaken as a girl. “Umm… Mr. Hua Cheng?”
This man’s voice was soft, very pleasing to his ears. Slowly, San Lang walked up the counter, a small blush coming onto his face. “Umm, yes, that’s me.” San Lang felt his heart pound a little when the clerk handed him the bouquet of white lilies, but quickly turned to confusion when Eming jumped up. “Gege!!”
This was the first smile Eming had worn all day, but this Gege quickly held his arms out to catch the rambunctious 13 year old. “Eming!! It’s nice to see you again!” Eming burrowed his face into the hollow of Gege’s neck. “Xie Lian, I’ve missed you!” Just then, Eming stared at Xie Lian and pouted. “You can’t go off to college, and not say goodbye! I don’t care if you had a boyfriend you should’ve said bye!!”
Xie lian awkwardly laughed before patting Eming on the head and setting the kid down. Slowly, he stood up, and stared at the tall male across the counter. They made eye contact before San Lang looked away. “You can call me Sam Lang,” he started, “But how do you know my brother??”
Xie Lian blushed slightly. “I used to work at his daycare when I was in highschool. He was interested in my writing and I decided I would take him in and teach him calligraphy and how to draw. He used to play with my little sister when she went to the daycare too….”
San Lang stared at Xie Lian, and he stared back. Eming seemed to notice a slight tension between the two, so he quickly ran from behind the counter and hugged San Lang’s right leg. Xie lian smiled at the scene, his eyes averting to look at the bouquet.
He felt a slight pang in his heart when Eming teared up at the bouquet. “Gege, me and my brother have to go to a funeral today… Can you come over for dinner?”
