Psycho-Pass Providence Review (with major spoilers!!! Don’t read if you don’t want spoilers!!)
As promised, I went to see Psycho-Pass Providence at Nijo Toho Cinemas in Kyoto. They had a little merch at the theater. They also gave everyone a booklet with artwork that I’ll include at the end of this review. If you want to wait until you can see the movie, please stop reading now because I will be basically telling everything that happened, good and bad. I was glad to see more people coming to watch the movie because when I bought the tickets most seats were available! We are a small fandom, but we are loyal! Now, please understand I don’t know any Japanese, so a lot of the information here is things that happened, but I can’t tell you much about the dialogue. I’m dying for someone to translate it once the movie becomes available everywhere.
Spoilers below:
The movie starts in a ship off the coast of Kanagawa, Japan, that is being attacked by the infamous peace breakers led by Akira Ignatov, Kei’s strange brother. The men in the ship are SAD agents that are getting murdered left and right. What do the peacebreakers want? Get something from a woman named Stronoyka who is currently traveling in the ship. From the synopsis we know this woman holds a dossier that details how to destroy Sibyl (or something of the sort, can’t quite remember). Kogami is the first on the scene in a suit reminiscent of a flying squirrel, but unfortunately, he’s too late. He looks hot as hell though when he jumps in the water.
The intro with a song by Ling Tosite Sigure had me excited to be watching a Psycho-Pass movie in a movie theater and surrounded by Japanese fans of the movie. It was sweet!
To skip ahead, SAD and the MWPSB have to work together. Akane, Kogami, Ginoza, Sugo, Saiga and Frederica travel to Dejima to investigate, I think. Let’s get to the meat of what the fandom wants to know.
Kogami and Ginoza Reunited
Akane is talking to Frederica and as they’re walking towards Division 1 office, they find Ginoza grabbing Kogami by the collar and yelling at him while Sugo is trying to separate them. What was Ginoza saying? No idea, but he was probably getting back at Kogami for leaving or coming back, etc.
At some point, however, Kogami and Ginoza fight together against their enemies. There seems to be some will for reconciliation.
Akane and Kogami Reunited
Akane walks in the room with Frederica when Gino is yelling at Kogami. Ko says “Kanishkan” at some point, so I think he’s addressing Akane, but her reaction is…should I say, enigmatic? Indifferent? Maybe she’s controlling herself?
SAD and the aforementioned team travel together to Dejima, and Akane and Kogami barely talk on the way. Once there, Saiga and Kogami talk and at some point they mention Akane. Later Akane calls Kogami while he’s in his room. They both sound like they disagree about something or like something is awkward between them and Akane hangs up on him, surprising him.
The thing about this movie is that they gave Akane the cutest outfits. Especially one in a very crucial moment. I’m so glad they made her look so cute and beautiful in the movie.
At some point the infamous peacebreakers begin their attack, and in the famous explosion scene, Frederica, Saiga, Kogami and Akane are walking down a hallway when an explosion goes off. Kogami doesn’t even think once about protecting Saiga or Frederica, he straight up runs to Akane and they fall to the ground. There are some lines of dialogue here while he’s laying on top of her. This is the part when Akane gets her bruised cheek.
In another scene, after Akira basically gives himself up, Kogami is interrogating him and then another guy shows up and shoots at them. Kogami gets shot and he ends up in the hospital. Akane visits him and when he makes to start smoking, she takes the cigarette off his mouth. There’s a moment here where it seems like he’s teasing her, because he sits up on his bed and kinda leans towards her. Very cute moment between them.
Saiga
Saiga and Kogami have a long talk about many things (I assume, remember, I don’t know any Japanese) but at some point they mention Akane.
A very sad, traumatic moment for Akane. They get attacked by a specially unkillable peacebreaker and Saiga ends up being held hostage by the guy. In the last moment, what we feared happens. Saiga’s last words are for Akane. Our poor girl suffers a lot and Kogami is there to console her and help her push through. They look so good together!
Akira, Kei, Maiko, Arata and Arata’s Dad
Honestly, most of the plot escapes me. Akira at some point even fights himself. He seems to be controlled by an old man who appears to be creating his own version of Sibyl. Akane is actually invited to Kei and Maiko’s wedding and on the same night Arata’s dad, with whom she seemed to have a very good relationship (there’s a lot of dialogue between Arata’s dad and Akane), killls himself while holding a photo of his family.
Craziness Ensues
Akane agrees to meet the mastermind behind all these terror attacks while a tactical team formed by Frederica, Gino, Kogami and Sugo fighting lasers from the air attack the headquarters of the peacebreakers. Here we see for the first time the two old dudes that become obsessed with Kogami in Season 3.
While everyone is fighting and there are explosions and shooting everywhere, Akane has a dialogue with the mastermind. At some point she draws her dominator but his crime coefficient is around 40. The whole place begins to collapse and by then, the mastermind has shot Akane on the leg and has her cuffed. They discuss and debate when he shoots her again (that asshole!). By the time Kogami shows up to rescue her, the other man is pointing his gut right at Akane’s forehead while they debate. At some point Akane says something that irks the guy and he pistol whips her a little bit. Kogami shoots him and gets her out of there.
The craziest plot twist
They show Akane dressed in a ceremonial uniform (and she looks so beautiful!) while Kogami is confined to an isolation facility. He begins reading a letter she wrote to him. They show her at a ceremony where it seems she will be recognized for her achievements. It is here when Akane shoots Chief Kasei in front of everyone.
They show Mika running to arrest Akane for her crime and she yells at Akane with frustration for what she did. Akane offers no resistance. As Kogami is reading the letter he looks angry, frustrated and sad for what Akane did. Why did she do it? We will have to wait until someone translates the movie.
Akane’s face is plastered all over the news as the inspector who went crazy and killed her boss. They show a parallel of Kogami walking out of the isolation facility while Akane is walking in. They don’t cross paths, but once Akane is alone she completely breaks down sobbing uncontrollably. It was so sad to see her suffer like that! Then they show Kogami walking free on the street and he says something and then the movie ends. Did Akane go to jail because of Kogami?
I’ll write more thoughts tomorrow! Overall it was well made. Lots of CGI and explosions almost made me think at times that I was watching a Transformers movie.

Kogami wears black
The change of color panel in Kogami's fashion signifies his change of character. His own emotion. He was haunted by his past action. A crime committed long time ago.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He went above the law by shooting down a culprit he can't enforced on his own. Makishima.
In Season 1, we saw him wearing a semi-formal attire with white undershirt and black suit with unruly neck-tie.
It signifies his pure conscience yet unstoppable determination to hunt down his nemesis.
White undershirt -> represents his clean unrepentant heart.
The dark suit -> represents his resort to violence should the situation require.
Tumblr media
In Season 3 and PPP movie, he dons a black shirt and black coat with a pair of blue jeans. Which signifies his understanding of the choices he made and how it tarnished his own hands. Apart from killing Makishima, he worked akin to that of quasi-mercenary.
Tumblr media
The black undershirt -> represents his blackened reputation. His anguished, tainted heart.
The dark coat -> still represents his resort to violence should the case needed him to.
The blue jeans -> represents his underlying repentance and desire for peace to prevail someday.
The Role of Akane and Ginoza in his life:
They are his friends.
The ones who are truly concerned about his mental and whole well-being.
The "I'm sorry" Prof. Saiga advices him for is not for the two of them. Not because he had wronged them.
But because he showed them no trust.
In S3/FI novel, he laments his lack of showing trust to Gino and her (Akane). Because he never confides his feeling nor plans to any of them. Something that Akane called him out for during their car Convo (Live-Reading Session) after he picks her out.
Unlike Arata and Kei. Who have each other's back. Despite of their different views (watch Season 3 to know more about the Immigrants condition and Karina's "campaign" for them).
Tumblr media
There's an underlying guilt and bitterness in Kogami's heart for not cementing a strong bond with the people he cares about. Unlike Kei and Arata who seemed to mirror his deep-seated longing.
Tumblr media
Will one day Kogami finds his peace and wear white again?
In the end, who will be judged?

A scene I would like to see in a possible PP4
So thanks to some fans on this site that have translated some parts of the psychopass movie novelization, we get to see a moment between Akane and Kougami chatting in shambala about Kougami's mother.
Akane refers her by Tomo-san and that she occasionally visits to check up on her. So now that after first inspector he picks her up. I would like to see in PP4 that they go visit tomo-san together for once.
But since they would be in the kougami household when they visit, Akane is gonna have to refer them as Tomo-san and Shinya-san when speaking to them to avoid confusion. It would probably be the first time she would call him by his first name.
I hope that they would continue to use first names more. I feel like it be a first step towards breaking down barriers between them even if it's not romantic. Cause after all these years and the stuff they do, I don't think they have to be so formal with each other.
I especially want Akane to stop. When she has conversations or acts around him she's not that polite or reserved but she still calls him his name as "Mr.Kougami". Even if it's not romantic their bond is still stronger and closer than acquaintances or co-workers in the same field. They know each other pretty well.

Psycho Pass 3/First Inspector Rambling (Incoherent.)
Kei and Arata's relationship has a purity to it that I did not expect to encounter in Psycho Pass. "I'll always be there to hold the end of the rope."
Unlike other masculine connections made in Psycho Pass like Kogami & Ginoza or Ginoza & Masaoka, it's not very complex at all. The foundation of it is a mutual trust built on shared losses, which isn't NEW, just, very simple and very pure. The brotherhood that they share that transcends time and nationality (which they emphasize a lot with the immigration plotline) was enjoyable to witness. A breath of fresh air.
I wish that the Psycho Pass writers didn't make Arata favor Karina Komiya to the extent that they did. I know it was a vehicle to add that missing conflict to Kei & Arata's relationship, but it felt like it contradicted his character a lot. We don't really see him advocate for Maiko very heavily, which was probably what pissed Kei off the most (I was very confused too). He kind of goes, "oh no! oops! oh well!" and I see how that drives Kei up a wall. So that rift is there. And it didn't get resolved very well. They get their shit rocked by the respective opponents and then reunite and vow that they'll inevitably confess the truth to one another "someday". I wonder what that conversation will look like.
The Karina thing also bothers me when it comes to her "best friend" and assistant En Owanee. I understand that politically her hands were tied, but it seemed as though she was extremely concerned with optics instead of pursuing immigrant rights. And her friend, after getting fired and THEN becoming a hostage, easily forgives her. Something just bothers me about it but I can't put my finger on it. I understand Karina is written to be commentary on isolationist policy but I wish they wrote her better. And En, please stand up! Wake up! Get better friends!
Komiya is like a mildly prejudiced Rise Kujikawa from Persona 4. And En is basically Tiana from Disney's Princess from the Frog, except Charlotte (Komiya) lacks significant self-awareness.
I think psycho pass 3 was intended to be simple, but missed the mark in that regard. But yet, it still manages to be my favorite season, because I truly love seeing the development of the CID and the growth of established characters like Hinakawa, Sugo, and Karanamori.
I'll probably be rambling about this series for a while.

Despite his claims to be a fan of that rip-off,
it can’t be a coincidence that The Simpsons creator Matt Groening named his alter ego Bart, as in Bart Gilbert, Associate of the First Inspector.

Kougami and Gino in S3 and FI
Season 3 and consequently the First Inspector movie focused on a whole new set of characters. While I won't get into my opinions on them, I do wanna talk about how the characters from the first season and mostly Gino and Kou were handled.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thankfully, imo, the characterization wasn't affected and its only normal since the writting crew didn't change. However, their actions barely mattered to the plot. It was clear that they were merely included for solely fanservice reasons.
Their appearance and role in the plot felt purely filler. It didn't contribute to the overall arc while merely adding some screen time and action for the og fans of the show. Kou's fight with Kei or them fighting the mercenaries didn't have any implications that added to the overall arc. It felt like a cool little sub-plot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was not a fan of that as I find it to be a cheap way to get the attention of the old fans while also giving a false impression of character that it certainly didn't deliver to.

I want see Akane's inner thoughts emotionaly. Would be an imitate and gentle feeling? For example we know that she most likely stopped burning cigarettes after Kougmi's return.
One, because I think she would be embarrassed if he caught her doing that in the providence mission. Just like when Gino find out in S2. And I believe she was silently hoping Ko wouldn't ask when she hand him some spinel in SeaUN during the 1st movie.
Two, she doesn't need to anymore, he's psychically present. And close enough for her to smell.
Three, the isolation facility is not gonna give her any cigarettes but I would say Akane is not stressing over cases while locked up.
How does Akane feel now having him back, at the end of First Inspector? She'll be woring again and this time he is in the country. I don't know how much stress she will be dealing with. However, now she can sit next to him and calm her self with his scent. She couldn't do that on S2 when she picked up the habit.
I just was to feel her express that gentleness of being relaxed by his scent and presence in the near future. I don't believe that she would say ouloud but just a little quiet moment in her mind.
Btw Akane doesn't actually smoke the cigarette she just burns it like it incense. She just associates the smell with kogami who always made her feel reassured so when she wants to focus/relax on a case she would burn it. Akane-chan just associates the smell with Kogami. That's why she hasn't developed a deep addictive habit to it because she wasn't actually smoking it the nicotine herself. Which is why its harder for Ko to quit when he runs out versus Akane.
