“Suddenly Moomintroll lifted his nose and listened! Far away Snufkin was playing his gayest song: ‘All small beasts should have bows in their tails.’ And Moomintroll began to run towards the music."
Down by the river he came upon Snufkin who was sitting on the bridge with his legs dangling over the water, his old hat pulled down over his ears.
Hello,’ said Moomintroll sitting down beside him. ‘Hello to you,’ said Snufkin, and went on playing. The sun was up now and shone straight into their eyes, making them blink. They sat swinging their legs over the running water, feeling happy and carefree.”
[ID: a black and white illustration from comet in moominland by tove jansson. moomintroll is running through a dark and twisting wood. he is a very small, round, white beast, with a long, round face, short ears, and a tufted tail. he is right in the front and center of the image, utterly dwarfed by the trees around him. he looks distinctly harried. a little above him and to the right are the words “this is me navigating the horrors BTW” with an arrow pointing at moomintroll. /end ID]
It was midnight. Then one o'clock struck. A little after two the Muskrat woke up and wanted to get
out of bed. He staggered sleepily downstairs and stopped in amazement in front of the sofa which
stood across the door. 'What an idea!' he muttered, trying to drag it away, and then of course the alarm
clock that Moominpappa had put there started ringing.

'Oh, it was only me,' said the Muskrat peevishly. 'I just wanted to look at the stars. I forgot all about
your stupid Groke.'

Can we talk about the terrifying implications of Moominmamma wishing to the Hobgoblin for Moomintroll to stop being so upset about Snufkin leaving and it actually working because I don't think anybody's ever brought that up in anything regarding Moomintroll and Snufkin's relationship (atleast not often).
Or simply how terrifying the Hobgoblin is with that kind of power.

I was reading Moomin for the very first time while drawing this and feel quite lucky to be experiencing this wonderful world now. I can only imagine that it hits much differently than if I had read it as a child.
And like that, another dream became a faded memory as the snow melted outside. The memory was odd and there wasn't much to make of it, not with anything anyone knows of, but it was something to remember his first hibernation - and the first time sleeping alone at Moominhouse - by.
