1984, 40 Years After: Rediscovering a Pivotal Year in American Independent Cinema

Join us on the 6th floor of Hatcher next Thursday, 18 April between 4-6p for our next Third Thursdays at the Library event!

Students in FTVM 435 have spent this semester engaged in studying the films and documents of the Mavericks & Makers Collection with a keen eye toward those films made in 1984. Students will share documents found within the archival boxes and present poster boards designed to explore specific thematic concepts. Films include "The Brother from Another Planet," "Choose Me," "Stop Making Sense," "Swing Shift," and "Secret Honor" (filmed on the U-M Campus at the Martha Cook Building.)

Poster session presentations will begin at 4:15 pm. Join us in the Special Collections Research Center on the 6th floor of the Hatcher Library.

As an institutional practice, archival practices often tend to serve to colonization, surveillance and discipline society of the Modern world. In the last ten years, with the digital technology and social movement detecting, recording and accumulating images become a civil activity. Thus, archiving videos and other types of visual images brought also non-institutional practices and as well contemporary discussions related to image, open source, collectivity and forensics. Beside interviews with video activists; this book compiles several writers’ articles on their practices and discussions of archives from several angles: forensics, decolonization and commons.

Film Restored 2023. The Film Heritage Festival

On the occasion of the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage, the 8th edition of the festival Film Restored will take place from 25 to 29 October at Deutsche Kinemathek in Berlin. This year's edition explores gaps in film history and material, as well as absence as a narrative and aesthetic device. The programme highlights recently restored films, some of them considered lost for many decades, and sheds light on works that have received little recognition in film history. The festival comprises 17 screenings with films from 13 countries and 4 continents
