It's a painfully hot day in Jackson, Ellie is wondering how Shimmer is doing down in the barn and contemplating about going there to spend some time with her beloved horse. The sun gives everything an extra glimmer and the roads hold small puddles of fata morganas, amusing her as always - astronomy it's her main target of curiosity but physics it's there too.
While she fixes her shoelaces and checks her pockets for the keys, she also looks at the small handmade candy wrapped in a simple paper, standing on the bench next to her door. The grocery brings back delightful memories of when you runned up to her with the cutest smile, a hand in her direction.
"Ellie, I made this candy from a recipe I found in one of those books, took some for you", you had no idea how that gesture reached the Williams girl right into the heart.
"Oh, thanks…!" She looked down at the brownish treat. It seemed to be so tasteful and you were known amongst your friends to be a very talented cook.
"So, are you coming to the Tipsy Bison tonight?" You put your hands in your back pockets. Ellie could only see a part of your tattoo coming out of your short sleeve, wondering what the entirety of it would look like.
"Uh, yeah, I guess. If I can finish all my tasks", she would definitely drop them if that meant to see you.
"Okay, cool! See ya later, then", and just like that you left with a small wave and a sweet smile.
Inside, Ellie beat herself up for not asking something like "oh do you want me there?" to slightly make a move and test the waters. You would always leave her speechless, lagging, absolutely fumbling on her words to even put a goof full sentence out.
On this incredibly hot day, she thinks it's finally the time to maybe taste your candy. She hasn't done it yet because… Maybe because she was holding onto the mere fact that you thought about her and went out of your way to give her some handmade candy. It was such a sweet act, it made her daydream for days and literally kick her feet when laying on her bed that night, thinking about your pretty eyes and cute lips.
Deciding to save for that night, she finally heads out to the hot weather and bright sun. The sunglasses she found on a supply run unfortunately were broken, she could make good use of them now.
It didn't take long to reach the barns, the shadow of the roof presenting a hope to cool down. The horses seemed to not mind the heat that much, and today was bathing day.
"Morning, Els", Pedro, a 15 year-old boy waved at her. She smiled back, finally facing Shimmer on her usual spot. But the horse wasn't alone.
In the barn, a brush in hand, stands you. Mindlessly stroking Shimmer's fur in circles, your back is not fully out since you're still with a tank on but Ellie can finally see the rest of your tattoo; it's a big tiger, an image mostly on your back with just a paw sticking on your front, under the clavicle - the part Ellie could always see. Today, it moves as your muscles do the same and you murmur a random melody, eyes careful to put the attention on the horse's fur.
The brunette has to take a deep breath before proceeding into the barn, trying to pull out that chill, laid back facade to hide the way you make her almost melt into a puddle.
"Hey, see you got up early today" She has you stopping on your tracks to look over your shoulder, immediately smiling fondly when seeing her.
"Yeah, I got the bathing job today so I didn't want to leave it until later", dirt falls from Shimmer's fur as you brush it. She's not the dirtiest one usually, but after some runs between the last bath and this one a significant amount of dirt is coming off. "Where have you been putting her to, by the way?"
"Oh, we found an old ranch somewhere west and I decided to let her run around a bit. It made a big cloud of dirt around her", Ellie chuckles as she gets closer from the horse, patting her neck. "This big girl enjoyed herself very much"
"Well, that's good, though", you go back into looking straight to your front, oblivious to how Ellie's gaze falls on your tranquil figure.
She captures the bridge of your nose and your adorable cheeks, the ones she just wanna kiss all the time so badly. Your hair, away from your face today, your attractive lips and the prettiest eyes she has ever seen. With your back to the barn's door, you almost glow in front of the light coming from outside. Like a divine vision, straight out of a fantasy book, demanding to be worshiped by the auburn haired girl. She feels her chest tightening and that feeling spreading to her arms and stomach, like it always does when she's around you; a visceral need to touch you in any possible way.
Shimmer ruffs and bumps her snout into Ellie's face, almost like she's calling her back to Earth.
"Easy", Ellie chuckles again, now trying to hide the last moment. From who? She doesn't know, there's just you, her and the horses here, but she feels so exposed whenever she's around you.
"It might sound crazy, but I do believe these horses have personality", you suddenly comment, turning to grab a comb.
"Right?! Oh, Jesse keeps saying I am crazy, that they're just horses, but I do feel this too! One time Shimmer laughed when she saw me fall. Like, a horse laugh, but I swear it was a laugh", and just like that, Ellie's loosening up.
Your laugh fills the space as you stand next to Shimmer to comb her black tail. Now facing your back again, Ellie takes in how your back muscles press your dark tank top and how your waist seems to call her hands to grab it, hold you from behind close to her chest. The desire to have your scent consuming her mind is so strong, she thinks she might actually pass out.
This is getting so out of hand.
"So", she clears her throat, looking around for another comb to work on Shimmer's mane. "Are you going to be here all day?"
"Tipsy Bison at six", you don't even care to look back at her, focused on the tail.
"Do you ever sleep?"
"Yeah, very well, actually", you chuckle. "Tomorrow I have nothing in the morning, so I can compensate"
"Oh… I thought we could, y'know…", she's trying to collect the millions of thoughts running around her mind at the same time, trying to not fuck this up. "Have a sleepover one of those nights… When you're free, I mean… But we don't have to if you don't want it- it was just an idea"
"It's a great idea!" The way you smile, turning to look at her, has her heart clenching. It's so genuine and sweet, just like you always do whenever you see her coming around and go compliment her. Do you even know the way she loses balance at each one of those acts? "The last sleepover was so long ago. We should call Dina and Jesse too"
"Yeah, absolutely", she rests her head on Shimmer's neck when you turn your attention to the tail again, cursing silently.
The rest of Shimmer's bath was calm, you both kept talking about whatever. At one point, when Ellie was rinsing the horse's back legs, Shimmer just threw her tail on the girl's face, making you laugh out loud and the auburn haired girl look stunned.
In the end you both got out a little cooled down due to splashes of water, past midday after bathing all horses. It was easier with two people, after all.
"So, I guess I'll let you get going to change and go to work…"
"Aren't you coming to the Bison tonight?"
"Oh, yeah, I guess I'll pass by", she tried to sound chill and nonchalant, not revealing how she always planned to go there as long as she wasn't patrolling.
"Okay, see you there then!" And you fucking leaned to kiss her on the cheek, smiling while you waved goodbye and turned in your street, leaving Ellie dumbfounded.
・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・
If a stare could create holes, Jesse and Dina would cause trypophobia in anyone. Ellie was sitting across from them on the table, holding a beer bottle so tightly that it could break at any giving moment. Standing next to the table was you, listening to their shitty excuses about not being able to attend to the sleepover, oblivious to their real intentions.
"Oh, I get it, it's fine. Guess it'll be just me and Ellie then", you shrug, smiling to the auburn haired girl. She smiles back immediately under your gaze. "We'll, I have to go back to behind the counter, go talk to me if y'all need anything"
And she stares at your back while you walk away, always looking so fine while handling the objects behind the long wooden table.
"You're welcome, by the way", it's Jesse who says it, smirking.
"I'd beat the shit out of you if we weren't in public", she groans, rolling her eyes.
"Oh, come on! It will be nice having her all by yourself for a night, uh? Then you can silently pin over her while pretending to pay attention to some random ass movie", Dina is looking up like she's pondering the scenario.
"Shut up", her hands start to sweat with anticipation, all the possibilities running through her mind.
What you'll be wearing, what you both will watch, if you are going to sleep next to her, if she'll be able to hold you close absolutely in a friendly way, if you'll laugh and have a good time with her. Ellie thinks about the tragedies implicated in being alone with you for the whole night, how embarrassing it can be, how she'll combust just by looking at you so closely, yet, so far.
"Stop overthinking. Just wear those flannels, she likes it"
"No, she does not!" Her face warms up, because of the alcohol, of course.
"She already complimented you ten times about that shirt", Jesse points out.
It was true, though. And each and every time, Ellie almost melted into a puddle in front of your chaste gaze. If you only knew what ran through her mind when she looked at you…
・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・
This was messy, and Ellie didn't know what to do anymore.
At some point of the night, you decided to play a game and Ellie just agreed - because what could go wrong? Not going far from the known route, you opted for a Q&A game in which each one asked a question and the other one had to answer it or respond with another question. It would be nice and silly, if the given situation wasn't hard enough for Ellie.
You were sitting in front of her, legs crossed on the couch, in a tank top and the smallest shorts Ellie has ever seen you on - which was cool, it was okay, she could manage that because she was already used to holding her shit together next to you. But everytime you moved around, for some reason, that night, she just wanted to pull you close once and for all. An inexplicable energy was emerging from the whole situation and she couldn't grasp it properly, but it made her restless.
Her hands tingle whenever you lightly hold her arm or her leg, she starts to wonder why you were so touchy generally, but tonight more than ever. An indescribable feeling comes from her guts each time you laugh and lean on. She might as well be going crazy.
So, it was already hard enough. But then you asked her if she was currently into some girl around town and that was the first time Ellie responded with another question.
"Why do you wanna know?" It sounded like she was caught off guard, and that bought your attention.
"I was just curious… But your answer makes me think that you actually are", you smirk, playful.
"I didn't say I was"
"Didn't say you weren't either", damn you for being clever.
"But that doesn't mean anything…" The auburn haired girl looked away, resting her arm on the back of the couch.
"Is it Dana?"
"No" Dana was another woman that regularly worked on the Tipsy Bison. She was pretty and polite, but Ellie wasn't interested in her - not with you around. And she was so desperate to direct the conversation somewhere else that she missed the way your voice changed.
"So there is someone, it's just not Dana?"
"Why are you so interested?"
Why were you so interested? It was because of the game, right? Your only concern now was the fact that Ellie didn't answer your initial question, so you had to dig to the bottom of this topic. That sudden sting on your stomach when thinking about Ellie pining over Dana was just the prospect of your close friend having a crush on your coworker and not telling you. Absolutely.
It probably had nothing to do with the way you were weirdly infatuated by Ellie tonight, with her hair on a bun and a halfway buttoned up flannel - with nothing but a top underneath it. Or how she seemed to glow under the warm light of her room and her presence brought the biggest comfort you've ever felt in weeks. Or how her lips seemed so attractive right now, calling for your sight when she nervously bit the bottom one. Little scars were splared around her face amongst the freckles, gifts from a bunch of branches that accidentally crashed into her face once, during a patrol.
"Because… I'm your friend and I would like to know when you're interested in someone. I mean, we tell this type of stuff to each other, right?"
Not all the stuff, Ellie thought.
"Yeah, I guess. Well, you actually have never told me something like that"
"That, my beloved, is because I have nothing to tell. You know it, I'm not interested in anybody as for now"
"Or for any other time on this town"
"Ouch!" You chuckled, lightly punching her shoulder. "You're not getting away from this topic. I'll name every woman our age and you'll tell me when it's the one"
The auburn haired girl tried very hard not to express any compromising expressions, especially after the list ended and you didn't say your own name.
You couldn't think of any other person that fit into the category, and that was odd. Because if there was someone, then it should be one of those.
"Oh, you're lying!"
"I'm not!"
"You just said 'no' to every single name"
"That's the reality of the situation"
"But there is someone?!"
"You said that, not me", she shrugged.
"Alright", you seemed resigned, looking away from her green eyes. "If you don't want to tell me, that's fine"
A sting got it right into Ellie's chest. She liked you too much to let you be this way, but at the same time she didn't want to tell you. The amount of terrible things that could happen; losing you and your friendship was at the top of this list, and it was bad enough.
"It's not it, I swear", Ellie collected all the strength to softly hold your face; now she was doing it as your friend who didn't want to see you sad. She turned it so you could face her, stare at her eyes full of vivid green. "I swear, you didn't say the name"
"Okay", you sigh, trying to understand what was that feeling on your stomach that grew while her fingers still supported your chin.
"Now… Wanna watch another movie?" Her thumb caressed your face with tenderness, inside she hoped this made you less uneasy.
"Yeah", it got cold when she retracted her hands to reach for the DVD options you both picked for tonight. "You can chose it now"

as you're ending "A Patchwork Family" will there be a sequel book?
There will be a sequel, yes! I have bits and pieces of it written already, but there might be a bit of a break between A Patchwork Family ending and the sequel beginning while I sort out what I want for the plot.

I love that the filters on my Ao3 profile are in genuine disbelief about how much I've written about Felix Ravinstill.
The first two photos on the left show Ao3 claiming that I have 4 fics tagged with Coriolanus Snow but only 3 tagged with Felix Ravinstill, but then wouldn't you know it? Once you filter to see all my Felix fics, you'll find that I have 4 tagged with him.
Also Ao3 currently hasn't acknowledged the President Ravinstill & Volumnia Gaul tag as a common tag, but it was acknowledged the Festus Creed/Felix Ravinstill/Original Female Character(s) tag and the President Ravinstill & Felix Ravinstill tag as common. This is very funny for me as the only author currently in those tags.
Apparently the toxic besties don't deserve rights. (Also note that being designated a common tag doesn't mean it's actually commonly used. It's just the default version of a tag rather than synonymous with the common tag. I still find it funny.)

At that stage in longfic writing where I feel like I'm going to fumble the ending, or like it's not quite the fic I wanted it to be, or like it will be disappointing.
It does not, in fact, matter how many times this is not the case. I am always temporarily convinced that it will be when I get to this stage.

If I remember, which I probably won’t, but I think each month this year I’m gonna post a like… “links to fics I wrote in this month over the past few years” kind of post.
I think it’d be kind of fun, and it’s also just kind of like “jeepers I didn’t realize I’ve written this much” sort of game.
So be on the lookout if you’re interested 👀

Whumpcember Day 11: Rescue Mission
Stranger Things
Steve Harrington/ Eddie Munson
Steve goes to get a sick Eddie from where he's hiding out at the abandoned junkyard. Steve takes Eddie home to care for him.

---
Steve glanced outside thinking about Eddie and frowning slightly at the falling snow. Now that Reefer Rick’s had been raided and cleared, it was under constant watch. Eddie had moved into the abandoned school bus in the junkyard. They’d all done their best to make sure Eddie was set to handle the colder weather. Nancy had given him all the extra blankets from downstairs, and they each took turns bringing warm foods. Hopper was kind enough to bring a small generator to give Eddie a bit of heat.
But Steve had gotten the call from Nancy the night before, her voice full of worry. Eddie’s small cough had gotten more serious, and could Steve pick him up the next night? Steve had said yes and not an hour later, Hopper had arrived to prepare Steve’s place. Since his parents had decided to extend their work trips by a few weeks, his place was empty. Still, it was a risk to have Eddie there, but Steve had no issues with it. Hopper had checked for bugs and set up a new phone line to call Joyce if he needed anything. He’d given specific instructions to not get Eddie until after dark.
That had been the hardest news, and Steve spent most of the day pacing his house, worried. He’d placed an extra pair of sweats in the guest bedroom and made sure there were extra blankets on the couch. Was Eddie okay? Was he going to need something more than what he could offer? Joyce had stopped by that morning with soup, broth, casseroles and a few other snacks for them, which Steve had taken thankfully.
As soon as the sun was gone, Steve made it to his car in record time. He’d basically memorized the way to the abandoned junkyard, and as he pulled up, he cut his engine early and turned off his headlights. He sat in silence for a second, bracing himself.
Eddie would be okay. This all would be okay.
Steve nodded to himself, making himself believe those words, and headed towards the abandoned bus. The air was somehow colder and sharper, and Steve shivered. Instinctively, he pulled his coat around him tighter and headed towards the bus.
He could hear Eddie before he could see him. His coughs sounded harsh and wheezy, and when Steve knocked on the bus door, he opened it, not waiting for Eddie to answer.
“You sound pretty terrible, Munson,” Steve started, and Eddie responded with another round of coughing.
Steve blinked, letting his eyes adjust to the darkness of the bus and then took in the man. Eddie was bundled under what seemed like three blankets and huddled next to the tiny generator. Steve was glad that the bus seemed warmer than outside, but the windows weren’t fogged, so it couldn’t have been much warmer.
Eddie lay curled on his side on one of the bus seats, shivering slightly. Even so, Steve could see that his face shone with a sheen of sweat.
Eddie breathed harder after coughing, his breath creating small puffs in the cooler air. “I don’t f-feel that great e-either,” he managed. He shivered and curled up smaller on the bus seat.
Steve knelt down next to Eddie, barely able to fit between the bus seat and the back of the one in front of it. Still, he squeezed in and brushed the man’s forehead with the back of his palm. He wasn’t surprised when it was much warmer than it should be.  “Well no wonder, you’re running a pretty high fever.” Steve’s eyebrows crinkled in worry. “Do you think you can make it to the car? I’m gunna take you back to my place.”
Eddie shook his head from under the mound of blankets, and even with them over him, Steve could still see how badly the man shivered. “S’not safe,” Eddie responded. “They’ll capture me and kill you. Or kill the both of us.”
Steve shook his head. “It’s okay. It’s dark out and Hopper made sure we had the okay to move you.” He placed a hand on Eddie’s blankets. “We’ve got to get you somewhere warmer.”
As if to answer, Eddie nodded, followed by another round of coughing. He wheezed between breaths, his eyes squeezing shut as he coughed.
Steve’s heart fell as Eddie coughed, and he noticed how Eddie gripped the blankets as he coughed, almost to ground himself. It sounded harsh and gritty, as if he was trying to breathe through gravel. “Shit, Munson, when you get sick, you really get sick, huh?” he asked.
Eddie wheezed and nodded, swallowing hard. “Yeah,” he responded, his voice scratchy and low.
“Okay, come on, I’ll help you to the car.”
By the time they got in the house, Steve bit his lip as he helped Eddie in. Eddie was shaky and exhausted, as if all the coughing simply sapped his energy. His brown eyes were dull and tired, and from weeks on the run, he had dark circles under his eyes. His face was pale, but the fever left two bright spots on his cheeks.
“You want to shower and get outta those clothes?” Steve asked, unsure if Eddie felt up to changing clothes.
Eddie shrugged slowly, as if his shoulders were thousands of pounds. “I don’t think I can do much more than change clothes and lay down,” Eddie sighed. He swallowed and grimaced as if it was painful. “God, my throat is killing me.”
“Joyce brought over some broth that might help,” Steve suggested. He helped Eddie to sit on the stairs as they got in, frowning at the man’s ripped jeans and short sleeve tee. “And also, I’ll grab some clothes for you to wear, too.”
Eddie nodded slowly. “You think that I could just stay on the couch?” he asked slowly. His eyes looked deeply tired, and he was leaning against the wall of the stairs as if it was the only thing holding himself upright.
“Of course. And there’s a guest bedroom towards the back of the house,” Steve suggested. “And actually, I think I left some clothes on that bed,” Steve remembered. “You can change in there, if that’s easier.”
Eddie gave him a small smile. “Thanks, Harrington.”
“Yeah, of course. I’ll warm up some of the broth, too.”
Eddie nodded slowly and made his way down to the bedroom; Steve waited until the door of the bedroom was closed before heading to the kitchen.
Steve was stirring the broth in a pot when Eddie came into the kitchen. He looked up at Eddie and then looked up again. Eddie was wearing his sweatshirt and sweatpants but he swam in them, making him look smaller than usual.
“These are huge, Harrington,” Eddie sighed, grimacing as he swallowed again. “I have no idea how you fit into these.”
Steve looked at Eddie and for the first time, realized how much of a toll that being on the run and on the road had taken on him. He was skinnier than he’d been a few months ago, and most of the proof was in the way he looked in Steve’s clothes. Steve could remember how Eddie looked in his hoodie when he first was at Reefer Rick’s. The sleeves had been a bit long and he didn’t have as broad of a chest as Steve did, but still the sweatshirt fit him well enough. Now, it looked much too big and the sleeves were still long, hiding Eddie’s guitarist hands.
“Joyce will have my head if I don’t get some food in you,” he sighed.
Eddie shook his head, sitting at the small table. “Just some broth would be good.”
Steve raised his eyebrows. “Are you sure? Joyce dropped off a bunch of food and Hopper came over and also gave us stuff. We’ve got enough food to last us a few days.”
Eddie sighed and leaned on the table, leaning on his arms. “Nah, I’m not that hungry,” he sighed. “I dunno.”
Steve gave him a look, stirring the broth again before sitting beside Eddie. “What’s wrong?”
Eddie shrugged. “I thought I was going to have to stay out there,” he admitted after a minute.
His voice was low, but Steve could tell that it was less from his sickness and more from admitting this; he let him continue.
“I was scared, too...I thought it was too dangerous.” Eddie shook his head, his long hair a curtain around his head. “I thought…I thought no one would come.”
Steve laid a hand on the man’s shoulder, ignoring the way it felt bony under his palm. “We couldn’t leave you out there,” Steve admitted slowly. “ I couldn't leave you out there, either. As soon as Nancy called last night, I was pacing, waiting for the chance to get you.”
Eddie looked up at him, about to say something in response, but turned his head and wheezed. He cursed and squeezed his eyes shut before launching into another harsh coughing fit. This one sounded as if Eddie’s body was trying to cough up his lungs, and Steve quickly stood and poured some broth in a cup for him. It was warm, but not hot, and when he sat in front of Eddie, the man shook his head and wheezed, launching into another round of coughs.
“Eddie?” Steve asked, his heart both speeding up and sinking in his chest. “Are you…”
Eddie held up one sleeved hand, taking a minute to wheeze. His face was twisted in concentration, as if he was forcefully trying to stop coughing. He wheezed again, and then managed to clear his throat. “Shit,” he groaned out, a few more coughs following his curse.
Finally, now that he had the breath, Eddie took a sip of the broth and sighed as it warmed his throat and chest. “I’m okay, Harrington.” He took another long sip, letting it warm his chest and throat. “And tell Joyce that she’s an angel,” he said, sighing.
Steve’s own heart was in his stomach as he took in Eddie. The fit had taken the rest of the color from his face, and he looked more tired than he had a few minutes ago. “That cough sounds awful, Munson,” Steve said worriedly. “Are you sure that you don’t want me to call Joyce?”
Eddie shook his head. “Not unless I get worse.” He swallowed again and then took another smaller sip of the broth. His voice sounded gravelly and strained, as if his throat was full of nails. “I’ve had something like this before. It sucks, but with some sleep and soup, I’ll be okay.”
“I’ll taking your word for it, Munson,” Steve said, but his joking tone didn’t quite stay in his voice. “But I’ll keep some broth warmed for you, okay?”
Eddie cleared his throat and swallowed again. “Okay.” He looked at Steve. “You think it’s okay if I crash on the couch instead?” He looked down sheepishly at the floor. “Maybe we can watch a movie or something?”
Steve smiled. “Well, I work at the video store so you’re in luck.”  He nodded towards the couch. “Are you sure you can get there on your own?”
Eddie huffed a slightly annoyed breath. “I’m sick, but I’m not in invalid, Harrington,” Eddie responded. As if to prove his point, he pushed himself into standing. “See?”
Steve kept his eyebrows raised and then relaxed as Eddie made his way easily to the couch. For a person who looked as exhausted as he was, Steve was glad that he at least could make it to the couch without stumbling.
Steve poured another cup of broth to bring to the couch, and as Eddie got comfortable, he set up the movie. He let his own thoughts wander as the movie started, wondering what the proper care was for someone with a terrible cough. Was broth and rest enough? What if Eddie got worse? What if the snow got worse and Eddie got worse?
When Steve pulled himself out of his own thoughts, he looked over at Eddie. He found himself smiling slightly at the sight.
Eddie was asleep. He’d leaned his head against the low armrest of the couch and he was curled in the looser ball than Steve had found him in. Eddie’s  breaths were even and slow, his eyes closed with one arm still swallowed up by Steve’s long sleeves hanging over the side of the couch.
Steve was glad that his breathing sounded normal, despite his cough and hoped that continued. Carefully, Steve pulled one of the blankets from the back of the couch and laid it over Eddie’s sleeping form.
Eddie shifted slightly under the blanket, pulling it closer around him before going still again.
Steve felt something shift in his heart as he looked over the sleeping man. “Sleep well, Munson.”

The sunrays reaching for Ellie’s face while she helped pick up piles of hay, to organize it inside the barn, should be one of the most gorgeous things you’ve ever seen. The little tones on her skin changed as she moved, the blush spreading due to the time under the sunlight, some hair strands sticking on her forehead due to the sweat. You had to audibly sigh to take yourself out from that trance, obliging the part inside of your chest to let go and keep walking towards the Tipsy Bison. And as you did, it was like the air was taken away from your lungs.
For the past month you’ve been having those different thoughts about Ellie, your friend. Thoughts that you didn’t know if you should even say loudly, because it seemed wrong and unpalatable in some outsider way.
Sometimes you’d stare at her when she was at the bar, and then end up looking around to make sure no one caught the silent moment. Ellie herself didn’t seem to realize it, and it was a miracle, considering how much you were fixated on her.
You’ve never had many friends growing up, the chaos where you were born hasn't allowed you to do so. You knew some kids on the QZ, but none of them were that close despite being nice - your mom used to say that, no matter in what situation, kids still were able to try and make something with what was available, and that was probably what you and the others did for some time. Then you got older and the only school was FEDRA’s, and the competitive environment made everything worse for those who didn’t had stronger bonds like you.
You ran away soon after your parents died, looking for a place smugglers talked about here and there; a town called Jackson that even had electricity. It was hard enough, but you made it after a little more than a year. The first thing you thought about when you got your house in the new community was your parents, and how they'd like there.
Dina, Jesse and Ellie became your friends casually, and you truly didn’t expect to be so attached to them as you were. But the way the three welcomed you in their lives and made you feel less alone, it was priceless. Jesse’s mom even treated you like her relative, baked you some nice treats on your birthdays too. So those were some of the most precious people in the whole fucking world to you.
And for some reason, you thought they would disapprove of your current thoughts about Ellie.
How a weird tingle occupied the tip of your fingers when you reached to fix her hair strands, and the newfound flutter on your chest when you hugged her. It all felt so different and exciting, so much you couldn’t help but hold her for some more seconds or touch her hair all the time when she was around, even if there was nothing to fix. And you would feel warm when she smiled, like being under the sun on a spring day, laying on the grass to feel the wind on your face; it was comfortable like that.
Two weeks before, you made her a little paper bouquet when you were looking into Jackson’s small and common library and found a handicraft magazine. But then you felt like giving her in person would be so awkward, so you put it on her pouch for her to find it when she left in the morning.
Entering the Tipsy Bison, you greeted the people hanging out there and got on the other side of the counter. Seth was probably doing something in the pantry while you fixed yourself, or that’s what you thought for some minutes. But then a woman your age came out of there, dark skin and braids on her hair, a friendly smile when seeing you.
“I didn’t think you had a shift today. Am I supposed to be here?” You smiled back at Dana while asking.
“Yeah! Seth wasn’t feeling good today, so he asked some people to cover. Jhonatan just left”
It was no big deal, and you both handled the place just fine. As the day ended, more people started to come to take a drink or just hang out at the bar, and a shy part of you hoped Ellie would soon enter through the door - you usually hoped, but these last days it was a different hope.
“Can you get more peanuts in the pantry?" Dana was cleaning the counter and ready to serve another customer.
"Sure!"
The peanut pot wasn't heavy at this point, soon the new harvest would come to fill it again. Seth has had a peanut plantation in his backyard since he started running the bar, at least that's what he says. A good bar must have good beers and peanuts, it's his motivation behind it. Now, the beer was a little bit more complicated but gradually was arranged, despite a lot of people drinking small doses of hot beverages due to its surviving the time - or just because they themselves could make it and it could equally last longer.
Taking the pot outside and closing the door with your foot, you walked distant from the cups behind the counter until reaching the front counter again. And when your eyes caught the person standing there on the other side, you almost dropped the pot.
It wasn't totally sweet and warm, though. Cause there she was, skin a little more tanned and arms out of the tank top, freckles visible along her whole body. The hair was on a half-bun now and you could swear your knees were buckling. She was smiling at Dana and talking with her, and that's what got you weirdly off guard. The game from the last sleepover crossed your mind immediately.
She said it wasn't Dana. So you should trust her word on that.
But why the hell did you care? And why, for some God forsaken reason, your chest tightened and you wanted to disappear, a bitterness spreading on your throat? Why does your head start to whisper nonsense, like a white noise, just to fill the sudden silence of your coherent thoughts?
The white noise is soon replaced by the ambient noise all around you, at the bar, when Dina calls your name and you have to snap out of it. Your eyes reluctantly deviated from the pair talking, and your other friend was your main focus now.
"Hey…!" You smiled the best you could, approaching the counter to place the pot under it. "How are you?"
"I'm fine, I was just helping with the supply storage today. Tomorrow I'll go on a patrol", you nodded, trying to pay attention to her and somehow capture anything from the pair's conversation next to you both, at the same time - having no success at the second task. "How about you?"
"I'm fine! Doing great!" Dina didn't buy it, but decided to accept your fake demeanor for now. "What are you getting?"
"Just some beer, I guess. Ellie, do you know about Jesse?"
Your attention came back to Ellie, realizing Dana wasn't there anymore. Just Ellie and her pretty eyes, a simple shrug. When she looked at you, you smiled and tried not to give in too much. Tried to just be friendly as always.
"Didn't know you were trying to get tanned", you smirked, playfully pushing her shoulder.
"Well, y'know, the sun needs to have some benefits", she smiled back, acting nonchalant about your comment. "Besides, I heard it attracts the ladies"
"And who said that?!" Dina chuckled.
"Well… Joel. And Tommy"
"And you're taking their words?"
"They might have a point", you blurted out, regretting immediately. When they both stayed silent, you tried to convince yourself they didn't listen to it, but Ellie's confused look and Dina's expression told otherwise.
"What, Ellie's tan is attracting you?" Dina had to say it, right? She could've kept that thought, but obviously saying it was better. Sure.
"Maybe", you shrug, trying to get out of this better than you actually were.
But the look you gave Ellie, from head to toes, taking in the way a mark on her skin was visible under the shirt strap and the blush on her face, the slightly wet hair on her forehead and nape, the exposed flesh between the hem of her shirt and the pants; it probably gave in entirely.
And you didn't know how to act about it, about the fact that you just shamelessly stared at her in front of a third person that could probably understand everything better than you, just by looking from outside.
Before someone could comment on this shit, Dana called your name and Jesse passed through the front door. That was your cue, and you took it.
"What the fuck did just happened?" Dina whispered to Ellie as you walked away.
Ellie's knees were buckling, and Jesse didn't understand the situation when he approached them. Her face was burning, the obvious blush spreading to her ears and neck. Her mind was on a rampage, repeating that moment as the questions twisted and turned around it, like flying things around the eye of a hurricane. Your sweet voice filling her senses, your lingering stare, the initial smirk.
"What's up, guys", Jesse rested an elbow on the counter. "What we're doing?"
"I'm going home", Ellie stepped away and through the people between her and the door, leaving behind the place that carried too many of her secret thoughts, the scenario to the beautiful scenes of you simply working.
Her body was vibrating, like that one time she got an electric current accidentally.
Did you just say you were attracted to her? Did she hear it right? Was her mind creating a new reality at this point?
"What happened?" Jesse looked baffled between the door throughout Ellie just left and Dina.
"I think we're gonna have to give these two a little push" was her answer, seemingly impatient.

Later that night, laying on her bed with a CD player running next to her, Ellie kept going back to that moment. She wondered what you really meant.
The warm light of her lampshade casted shadows on the walls and ground, reaching as far as it could before giving in to the darkness of the rest of the room. Just enough of it in order to not leave the auburn haired woman lost in her own house. Although she knew exactly what was in the room, the current illumination gave in a sense of distance and isolation from the rest of the world. And it was good, because she felt less pressured about what and how to think.
As much as she tried, she couldn't stop listening to her own heartbeats stronger than ever, while her eyes runned around the place to catch something, anything, still unknown. The memory of your eyes taking in her image after working outside for hours, Ellie could let herself be pulled inside your mind happily.
Should she do something about this? The main reason why Ellie never made a move was your oblivious way, but now things might have changed. Well, you didn't seem to notice her feelings, but there was an uncommon behavior going on. Definitely a shift in the moment, starting by the way you were looking at her so attentively. Ellie almost let herself be taken away by your constantly gorgeous figure, but that shift stopped her. She was so used to admiring you from afar, to try and hardly piece together the details she couldn't really see, that it was overwhelming to have you approaching her on a middle ground.
But then, what would she do? What was the appropriate response to this?
She could go on and on about this thought forever, if it wasn't for a knock on her door. Fixing her baggy shorts and the sweater, she stumbles on the small table in the middle of the room before finally reaching the front, opening it.
You're standing there, messy hair and heavy breaths, looking like you were running for your life.
"What happened?" Ellie starts to get worried, genuinely thinking something might have happened that led you there in such a hurry.
Resting your hand on your knees, you show her a finger to ask for a moment. Gasping repeatedly, heart beating fast and hard against your chest. The auburn haired girl just looks at you, concerned and unsure, until you finally speak your mind.
"Do you like me?" You burst out, now supporting your weight on the wall next to the door.
You watch as Ellie's face metamorphoses itself into a bunch of expressions in a minute, finishing with her eyes wide and mouth slacked.
So many questions roam through her mind, not a single one being in the center for some time. Then, all she can think is how the fuck do you know.
"How… What… How-"
"Do you, Ellie?" you moisten your lips, searching for an answer before doing any other thing there.
You need something, anything to ease the anxiety creeping on your mind right now. Your hands are clammy and you just wanna… You want to touch her so bad. To pull her close and feel her body pressing yours. But you won't do it before her answer.
"Because, honestly… I've been a mess for the past month, and I can't get you out of my mind. And if you feel this too, if you feel something close to that, I really need you to tell me right now", the desire is to tell her all the thoughts and dreams, the imageries that put butterflies on your stomach, the feelings morphing in scenarios that, now, had a chance to not stay in the fantasy realm anymore. "Please, say something. Anything. I truly need you to-"
Her lips cut your speech, crashing into yours as she pulls you by your shirt. It's like all the air leaves your lungs as her hands hold your hips and you support yourself on her. Your fingers intertwined with her hair, her lips taste so good. Her scent fills your senses as the warmth of her body and clothes envelope you in the most amazing zone possible.
It's like flying. It feels so incredibly insane that your body suddenly just exists. You don't need to think when her lips are there, catching yours, fitting on yours, and her tongue tastes you as she pushes it inside your mouth.
The night could've run away, it wouldn't matter. The whole world could fall apart, and you would be there with her.
"How the fuck did you find out?" Ellie's voice comes in a whisper as she receives your pecks around her face, as soon as the kiss is broken.
"Honestly, I should've noticed sooner", you chuckle, holding her face between your hands. She looks so amazed and aerial. "But Dina and Jesse kinda helped me. After I literally said you're attractive in the bar"
"So it wasn't something in my head…!"
"No, sweetie" She smiles while you kiss her cheek and chin over and over.
"So… you find me attractive?" Ellie smirks, pushing her head back to better look at your face.
You can't hide the smile under her gaze, looking away just to nod and shrug. "Yeah, silly. I do"
"Oh my God, you're so into me…!" She teases you, pinching the sides of your body.
"And you're into me!" You push her shoulder as she rolls the green eyes.
"It's just a detail. Not like I've been crushing on you since you got here or something…"
"Since when?!"
"Oh shit…"

Starting to brainstorm ideas for a tbosas fanfic that is Felix Ravinstill x OC to continue my personal trend of being fascinated by guys who give me next-to-nothing in canon.
This also continues my trend of writing fic wrapped supposedly focusing on romance but might just be more of a character study of a group of people (the Academy students) by accident

Final Saddler Ficlet!
Here’s the third and final Saddler prequel ficlet. I’ve always wanted to write a scene like this, and Saddler was perfect for it.
