- Gatcombe Fashion Show -
You know, I love Anne's style, especially the 80s and 90s casual outfit BUT..
Peter and Zara and their childhood styles deserve a moment of adoration here, at least in my opinion.
This is the essence of the 80s!
It's once of my favorite Zara's outfit! Not ironically, I would wear it! It's perfect, it has everything I like - bright corduroys, brown shoes and my dream jacket!
Tumblr media
Look at this boi! He's ✨ main character ✨ And his fluffity blond hair! ( don't..don't think about it...)
This looks is like "Tell me your mother is Anne without telling me" bcs it's layers - turtleneck, shirt and vest with train! Train! Iconic boi!
Tumblr media
Matchy matchy but it's Balmoral! They look cutie! But I'm not a big fan od Balmoral Tartan pattern, I prefer Black Watch ( I mean on Peter's kilt) or Steward, but it's my type. I like that patch on Peter's knee, a lovely accessory!
Tumblr media
I love Peter's jumpers! A such ✨ Bavarian style. First and second pic is the same jumper but different style - second is so old money bcs shorts, first is typical ✨ Gatcombe core, I love it. On the third, this sweater seems to be buttoned. Looks good and oh what a dork
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another matchy and color cordination! Just perfect ! Dungarees is good!
Tumblr media
Peter's outift have my heart! I wear one myself, so here we understand, I wonder what colors it had..
Tumblr media
Zara darling are u okay? She's fucking crazy, but free. Peter have opposite opinion about it , he's so done with her. Another yellow styled by Zara, Peter has my heart because it is more toned down in color. Bottom part is matchy!
Tumblr media
The same jacket but different combination of color. It's matchy for Anne's outfit shade and omg, Zara looks like lil fruit sorbet, lemon with blueberries. Cutie!

Do you have any gothic novels that you can recommend off the top of your head? Especially to people who want to try their hand at the genre? I've hit a wall in my project and I need to get some fresh inspiration, but I don't know where to start and the book side of tumblr failed me the last time I tried asking them for recs
Hell yeah! I made some old posts for this a while back, but it's good to look at it again with my more recent taste! Let's see...
Classic Gothics
Dracula: The one, the only. Often imitated, never equalled.
Frankenstein: Short, sad and world changing! Can get a little slow at parts, but definitely worth it. (True story, my parents read this to me as a fetus to calm my kicking, so it's part of my personal mythology!)
The Case of Charles Dexter Ward: The most gothic of Lovecraft's work, and possibly my favorite. Novella length, usually found in collections.
The Picture of Dorian Gray: Sinister, sexy, philosophical, with a main character I want to punch in the face!
Carmilla: Another novella, about as lush and swooning as vampire stories get.
The Hound of the Baskervilles: A very readable gothic mystery.
Confessions of a Justified Sinner: This one isn't as action packed, but if you have big religious issues like me, it's incredibly haunting.
The Monk: Like the above, but sleazier and crazier!
Northanger Abbey: A gentle parody of early gothics, starring an adorable proto-goth girl.
The Italian: I'll be honest, I find Anne Radcliffe kind of a slog, but if you liked Northanger Abbey and want to read what Catherine Morland reads, this is probably the most accessible.
A Long Fatal Love Chase: This starts as campy and then takes a plunge into gut-wrenchingly intense. The book Jo March was always trying to write!
The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde: Another novella, and Stevenson is one of the best writers out there for excitement!
The Werewolf of Paris: Gothic monster as serial killer, still scary today.
Rebecca: The foundation of all gothic romance to come afterwards. A ghost story without a ghost, with an ending that's still debated as happy or sad!
Jane Eyre: The other foundation of all gothic romance to come afterwards. I bounced off the child abuse-heavy beginning a few times, but I'm very glad I finally read to the good stuff!
The Castle of Otranto: Considered the first gothic novel, a goofy b-movie in written form.
Modern-ish Gothics (post-1950 or so)
The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein: Fuck the haters, I love this book.
Mexican Gothic: Genuinely scary, genuinely romantic, genuinely creative. A favorite.
Blackwater: A southern gothic saga of a family in a flooded town, whose scion marries a woman who isn't quite human. A whirlwind ride!
A Bloodsmoor Romance: Another family saga, this one northern gothic, with sisters whose lives all go off the rails in different supernatural ways. Give this a try before writing Joyce Carol Oates off entirely!
The Silver Devil: A nasty, problematic bodice ripper where you'll cheer for the heroine to bring the hero down low!
Interview with the Vampire: To be honest again, I'm not super into Anne Rice, but this is a page-turner, and every vampire book that has come after it has had to respond to it in one way or another. Read the next two Vampire Chronicles books if you like it!
A Taste of Blood Wine: My own preferred sexy vampire romance!
The Bloody Chamber: The ultimate dark sexy fairy tale work, accept no substitutes.
Haunted Castles: Contains the brilliant novella Sardonicus, as well as some other campy gothic stories!
A Great and Terrible Beauty: Many millennials were introduced to the gothic genre via this, Fear Street Sagas, or A Series of Unfortunate Events. This is my favorite of the three, though the sequels are a bit of a letdown.
Gormenghast: This series is a throwback to the pseudo-medieval, Otranto-style gothic, but much better. Don't read Titus Alone.

An interesting talk but I have some notes.
1) Philip was devastated by Mary's death
Source?? We have the "reasonable regret" line which some historians have interpreted as Philip being relatively unbothered. That might be Philip's Spanish stoicism, but then again IIRC we have more evidence of grief for his other wives' deaths.
2) Mary fixed the debasement of the coinage
I understood that as being Elizabeth's achievement? Not that Mary was unaware of the problem, but that she didn't have time to fix it and Elizabeth early in her reign fixed it.
3) Mary's first pregnancy was a fetus that miscarried
Maybe I need to read more recent books on Mary. But if Mary really was pregnant, surely she would have noticed the miscarriage? And there wouldn't have been the whole business with her being late and late and then pregnancy is over?
4) Elizabeth 1998 depicts Mary as being naive, lying, or cheating on Philip, because of the line "the king has not shared her bed for many months"
Dr Strong ignores a key line in the scene she discusses: the line RIGHT BEFORE the line she discusses is this one:
"There are symptoms. She has ceased to bleed, she produces milk and her stomach is swollen."
So no, Mary in Elizabeth 1998 has some reason to believe she's pregnant. The skepticism is because Philip hasn't slept with her with a long time, not because Philip is ABSENT.
5) Mary calls Anne a whore to show depth of emotion
I disagree with the question that was posed that claimed it's historically recorded that Mary didn't know the meaning of the word whore. I'm 99% certain Mary was not that sheltered and the idea she didn't know the word is Catholic propaganda.
Also the historical Mary was not polite about Anne or Elizabeth's origins so it is accurate for BE to have her use those words.
Poor Daphne Slater. She gave us a Mary who felt like a real person, but she's overshadowed by Sarah Bolger. Jane Lapotaire also played a Mary who wants to spare Jane and Guildford.

OR the birth of their 2nd child and agin all fluff with Charles crying or something and just being really happy
Thanks
I just made it a liiiiiitle bit sad in the middle, but with a happy ending, I promise
warning: miscarriage
The first pregnancy was planned. They went to the doctor for help and they were so cautious with everything
But the (real) second one was unexpected.
It was the night of an awards show.
She won an award and Charles went with her while Anne stayed with Pierre and Valerie.
Things got steamy and they forgot protection (they were a little drunk to remember that she wasn't on the pill and that they needed to use a condom)
The weeks after that happened she started to feel sick, being nauseous during concerts and having to cancel one of them because she was too tired and weak to perform
So she went to the hospital with her manager, doing tests and making sure she didn't have food poisoning
She was alone, Charles was on a race week and Anne went with him because she loved going to his races, feeling safer on his garage with her uncle rather than being on a stadium hearing many fans screaming and loud music
Anne is the biggest fan Juliette has, but she's a daddy princess
"Well, it seems that you are six weeks pregnant" the doctor said smiling
"W-what!" she exclaimed
Neither Charles and her planned this. She can't even remember when it was
"Shit" she mumbled looking down at her abdomen
How will Charles react?
After having Anne, they just loved being on their bubble of three. But it wasn't enough. The house they bought was too big for the three of them.
They adopted a puppy, but it wasn't enough
So they just tried again. And again. And again.
Until a test came with two lines.
They were so happy.
But that day came.
It was on Spa. In that moment she was only a month and a half pregnant, only their family and close friends knew about the pregnancy.
The race started with gray skies, and something didn't feel right. It made her stomach ache so bad, feeling how her guts twisted thinking that Charles would be driving a fast car in a few hours with the sky looking like it would be raining anytime.
Juliette was nervous, too stressed. It wasn't good for the baby.
Even if Charles promised her that he would be safe, that nothing would happen to her, she had that feeling on her chests and on the back of her brain that kept repeating that something bad will happen that day.
And it happened. But not to Charles.
It was something so simple, nothing the doctor saw on her first check up.
The fetus wasn't developing, it never was alive, so her own body did the job and eliminated it.
She still remembers the way her abdomen started to hurt suddenly, making the people around the box look at her after she gasped loudly. And when they saw the blood running down her thighs under her dress they knew what was happening.
They had to tell Charles through the radio. He retired to be with his wife.
So when the doctor told her she was pregnant, again, she panicked.
What if she loses the baby again? What if she can't have more babies?
"Is it alive? Please tell me the baby is alive" she begged.
She walked out of the hospital with a picture of an ultrasound on her bag, the melody of the heartbeat on her ears and a baby in her womb again.
She wants to tell him. But she has to make sure that the baby is alive
So she just waited. A week. Two weeks. Three weeks…
Until she was two months pregnant.
"What is this?" Charles asked, looking at a bag she gave him after a race
"Oh, just a gift" she smiled, biting her lip.
He frowned surprised and opened the bag, gasping when he saw two little shoes like the ones he was wearing with bis racing suit
"No way" he gasped. "No way! For real?"
"For real" she smiled, hugging him. "It's healthy, the heartbeat is so wonderful"
"How far are you?"
"Two months" she whispered in his ear.
He was just happier than ever. Finally, their rainbow baby.
The next time she had to go to a check up was when they were going to guess the gender.
"What do you think it will be?" Juliette asked him, holding his hand while waiting.
"I really don't care" he said. "But I want another girl"
"Just because you could spoil her, hm?" she laughed.
They kept it a secret for a long time. Their friends wanted to have a party to know the gender, so she just gave the letter with the results to their friends so they could take care of it.
"You know… if it's a boy I know how we should name him" he sighed, rubbing her belly softly.
"Really" Juliette smiled, kissing his cheek. "Oh, I think the baby read your mind"
"A kick?" he smiled.
It was the first kick.
The party day arrived.
Anne was the happiest kid in the world. She's a big sister, she wanted to meet her new sibling as soon as possible.
"What do you want it to be?" Juliette asked her daughter while brushing her hair on two braids.
"A girl! So I can play with her"
Charles and Juliette walked to the backyard, everything was decorated with pink and blue and many friends were there, all of them excited to see what gender will be the next baby Leclerc.
It was with a cake. When Juliette and Charles grabbed the knife just his they did on their wedding and cut the first slice, a bright blue color made them smile.
"A boy!" Charles exclaimed, making all their friends cheer for them and hug them.
Juliette stopped performing months ago, but that didn't stop her from making music, composing more songs for her husband and kids.
With seven months pregnant she was nominated to an award, and even if she was pregnant, that didn't stop her to go there.
Everyone talked about how stunning she looked, how beautiful and happy she was with her belly.
"What's the name of the baby?" "You already thought about a name?" "How far are you?"
Everyone wanted to know about it. But she just kept it a secret because it was special.
Even on her speech after receiving the award, she called her son "Little Leclerc"
And the day arrived.
None of them were working, but none of them were in their house.
Her water broke while shopping, so none of them could grab the hospital.
"Shit, shit" Juliette gasped when she felt like peeing, feeling the liquid splashing and falling to the floor.
"Oh shit" Charles gasped and held her hand, only to receive a big squeeze when her contraction came.
They just left everything there, and grabbed Anne from the cart, running to their car and driving as fast as possible to the hospital.
"I hate this, I hate you, god it hurts" Juliette gasped feeling another contraction.
"I know, I know, just breathe" Charles said, holding her hand.
"Breathe my ass!" she exclaimed. "If you don't drive faster I'll have this baby in this car!"
"I know! I'm doing the best I can!" Charles said nervous.
Anne was on the backseats looking at her parents, laughing. Her brother was coming finally.
"Call your damn brother" she groaned. "We don't have the bag. Hurry!"
When they arrived to the hospital he was the first to jump out of the car, looking around and asking for help while Juliette got out of the car slowly, holding her heavy belly and walking uncomfortably.
"I swear this is the last one" she groaned.
"Okay, okay. No more Leclerc's, I know" Charlea sighed, picking up Anne and going with her inside the hospital.
The birth was faster than expected, since she already dilated enough during the ride towards the hospital.
"I told you I could give birth in the car" she groaned holding Charles hand when the doctors started to come and get there ready.
"I know, I know. You are right" he whispered. "You are so strong"
At this point he wasn't feeling his hand. Not like if he cares.
He was holding her leg to help her as the doctors told him.
Only a few pushes, she only needed four to have their baby in her arms
And when they heard the cries, Charles couldn't keep his tears, cutting the umbilical cord and looking at how the baby looked at Juliette with big eyes.
"Hello Hervé" she whispered, holding her son's tiny hand.
"Hervé Anthoine Leclerc" Charles whispered kissing her lips.
