Tender Aches
Whumptober 2022 Masterlist
"Whumpee?" Caretaker walked into the room. There were no lights on except the fairy lights strung across the walls, casting dim pinkish lights onto the carpet. In farthest part of the room, Whumpee was laying on the floor, knees drawn up to her chest.
"Hey, what's going on, huh?" They knelt down on the floor beside her. Gently reaching over, Caretaker stroked their thumb against her shoulder. "Can you talk to me?"
"Why did you save me?" Whumpee muttered.
"What?"
"Why did you save me?" she cried, flinching away at their touch. "You keep saying you got me out of a bad situation b-b-but all you ever do is force me to change. I don't know how to behave, what to do!"
"Sweetie, you just have to be you. That's all any of us want."
"No! You want me to be who I was before but I-I-I don't know who that is! I'm trying to be good, to be her but I don't--"
"You don't need to be anyone, I just want you to be yourself."
The shivering figure curled into herself with a whine, further away from Caretaker.
"Whumpee."
She shook her head, clenching her fists in her oversized shirt. "Don't….don't… please."
"It doesn't matter who you are, you mean-- you mean the world to me."
She shut her eyes, sobbing. Caretaker's lip trembled as they leaned closer.
"You didn't do anything wrong," they soothed, hooking their chin on her shoulder. Sobs wracked her broken frame, tremors reaching where their head lay. "You're safe here, Whumpee. I promise. "
