I am the rot; the rot consumes.

I Will Greet the Sun Again // Forough Farrokhzad
I will greet the sun again
I will greet
the stream that flowed in me
the clouds that were my long thoughts
the painful growth of the aspens in the garden
who passed with me through the dry seasons
I will greet the flock of crows
who brought me the scent of the fields at night
as a gift
I will greet my mother who lived in the mirror
and was the reflection of my old age
and greet the earth again
whose throbbing interior, with my chronic lust
I have stuffed with green seeds
I will come, I will come, I will come
with my glossy hair: rich with the scents of turned-up soil
with my eyes: experiences of thick darkness
with bushes I have picked from the grove on the other side of the wall
I will come, I will come, I will come
and the threshold will be filled with love
and on the threshold
I will greet those who love again
and the girl still standing there
on the love-filled threshold
(translated from the Farsi by Elizabeth T. Grey, Jr.)

poem by an unnamed Persian female entertainer lamenting that those she likes aren’t interested in her while those she doesn’t like are finds a parallel in the words of a Japanese geisha, also unnamed:
When it’s the man I love
he goes by and doesn’t come in
but men I hate—
a hundred times a day.*”

When you hold a sword in your hand, it cannot kill people (1)
In the presence of god, badness isn’t forgotten
This sword wasn’t made for the tyrant
Grapes weren’t made to be made into wine with charkhosht (2)
Isah saw a person who was killed on his way
He was in aw and took his finger to his teeth
He said: who did you kill that you have been killed so miserably
And later who will kill him, he who killed you
Don’t point your finger in order to hurt someone
So that they don’t point their fist in order to hurt you
Roodaki - Ghasayed and Ghata’aat
-------
1) it means you shouldn’t kill people with it
2) a device used for juicing grapes

We stand back to back
to contemplate darkness
and the chirping of rain,
the rain eases
a new season dawns
we turn our heads
to contemplate Spring
but find we no longer know one another.
