Help, I don't need help...
How do you help someone that doesn't ask for help? Take that a little further… How do you help someone who doesn't even care to live?
Depression sucks… It isn't something that can be turned off by choice, it isn't something that goes away when you "smile." Depression is like a heavy load that is in fact too heavy to carry; and instead of asking others for help, it makes you do it all alone.
Earlier I said, "How do you help someone who doesn't care to live?" I chose the words "care to live," instead of "want to live" for a reason. When someone is depressed they don't really care about anything. Life is just too much.
Depression makes you lay down in bed, all day, alone, while simultaneously making you hope you would just die.
What is even sadder, is when these individuals do finally go out and see other people, they sometimes act really happy and smile. Sometimes even become the happiest person in the room, when deep down inside they are crying for help. #fakeituntilyoumakeit
How do you help someone who doesn't care to live? How do you help someone that doesn't show their real grey colours?
Today in class we talked about how a good pastor cares about the ones he/she shepherds. That means he/she will use their own time to serve others. A good pastor does this to really get to know the people he/she cares about, to see how they feel, and to be there for them. This brought up the point that pastors sometimes have to try and invite themselves to people's homes, as some people don't think pastors have the time for them when in fact that is what they want to do.
This got me thinking, how can a pastor help someone that sits in the back of the church, goes home alone, and never talks to anyone? How does he/she notice someone in need? How does this pastor invite themselves into the lives of people that don't care?
Note: I am not a profesional. I just noticed these things helped me when I was depressed.
I believe the first step is seeing the person in need of help. Whether they are someone who sits in the shadows or someone extremely happy. Seeing them and getting to know them is key. This can be an extremely hard task, but it is possible.
Step two goes hand in hand with one, that is talking to the people around you as well as in the shadows. In fact not just talking, but speaking the truth about the struggles you have. People wear fake masks every day; taking off your own mask helps others do the same. Here is where most "happy people" open up and show their true grey colours.
Step three is "be annoying," well kind of? My point is depressed people want to be alone a lot of the time. They have no will to go on walks, eat, or see people. Being annoying puts a spanner in the works of depression. Though it feels hard for them, the company of another fixes so much. It's more important to be annoying and have them around than to let them die alone. This of course doesn't mean not giving them their own space, but instead it means inserting yourself in their lives as much as possible and sometimes "being annoying."
Step four is to help them take the steps to get help. If that is therapy, or calling the doctors to seek professional help. Help them.
In all of this though, pastors need to be patient and full of the love of God. Being around someone depressed can be quite draining, but there is hope.

Sejak Sajak
"Sejak Sajak" adalah sebuah puisi karangan Helvy Tiana Rosa yang disulap dengan indah menjadi sebuah lagu. Malam ini aku menikmatinya, aku begitu kagum akan setiap kata yang dirangkai begitu kaya akan makna.
Aku mulai berhayal akan seseorang yang mungkin tahun ini atau tahun depan Allah hadirkan (bentuk doa pribadi). Seperti kalimat dari puisi tersebut bahwa "cinta selalu bekerja dengan cara rahasia". Rasanya rumit untuk dipikirkan dan dijelaskan bagaimana semesta bekerja merangkai rahasia.
Ada titik dimana kita mungkin melewati sesuatu yang terasa berharga tapi ketika Allah berkata “tidak” apa boleh buat, pasti itu sudah hasil yang terbaik.
Karena harus kita yakin bahwasannya yang terbaik adalah apa-apa yang Allah persilahkan. Seperti kata mentor cinta jika berjodoh ada tiga tandanya yaitu dimudahkan menerima kekurangannya, mendapat restu orangtua, dan dimudahkan jalan menuju pernikahan.
Tentang sebuah cinta yang Allah rahasiakan. Semoga segera ijabah. Semoga sabar membersamai dengan perbaikan diri agar lebih siap saat cinta bekerja.
