REVIEW | "Tegan and Sara: Junior High" | B3 - Boston Bastard Brigade
Tumblr media
Junior high school is that time where one starts a finding their true selves. It’s a strange in-between place, where you are constantly conflicted between acting like a kid or an “adult”. But everyone has gone through this, from the most average of people to — in this case — a two twin sisters who’ve played to audiences all over the world. Tegan and Sara: Junior High tells the somewhat true story of the Quin sisters, with some relishing of the truth for the sake of the plot.
Although it was 1991 when Tegan and Sara were in middle school, this version of their story instead places the twins in the modern day. With their parents separated and their mom dating a new-but-nice guy, there’s already a bit of heaviness in the lives of the sisters. But upon entering junior high, both Tegan and Sara find their way to overcome obstacles, be it as a duo or on their separate paths. Of course, this also means that the sisters bump heads over the new people in their lives, especially when it comes to possible bullies and love interests.
Tumblr media
It’s clear that one twin has it rougher than the other. Tegan’s shyness in the beginning makes it a struggle for her to make friends, whereas Sara easily gels with her classmates. But with them being twins, the weird questions start coming out, ranging from telepathy skills to, well, questioning their very existence. However, things get a little weird between the sisters when Avery enters their lives, a girl who bullies one but befriends another.
Much of Tegan and Sara: Junior High focuses on the duo’s first year in their new surroundings. They deal with their share of academic issues, their first bras, and experiencing puberty in the most awkward of ways. Going to see their original first friend Faiza acts as a comfort zone for both, but — as long-distance friendships go — they start drifting apart and changing in ways that make them look like a much different person from before. It’s also the time when the twins start figuring things out about themselves. Well…okay, one does, at the very least.

When I was a kid I used to insert myself in literally every media I watch read consume. Like I created an oc in my mind and make them fit somewhere in there without breaking original story. Or myself like wish I was a superhero type. Normal things we all did I think.
But also as a kid I was extremely religious. Like the moment I knew myself I was religious and I was so sincere about it.
I believed in Allah and loved Allah with my whole heart and memorise every prophets story in Qur'an, and also memorize Suras as summertime hobbies and God I loved fasting and Being hijabi when I was a little more older was my own voluntary choice and I loved it so much too. It was never hard for me or it was never for my parents or society I genuinely believed voluntarily and I loved it.
And now when I was inserting myself to this stories there was like one rare thing that make me sad about me being religious. And it was that I don't fit in. I want to so much think myself as a mutant for example but cmon how I could fit in there. Like I need to pray but superheroing have no time praying or tight clothes are haram or how the other characters see me weird and hate me probably etc.
Theennnn I am seeing Faiza Hussain I think. She was the first Muslim character I saw I'm comics and I was like so so happy obsessed. I read her but I don't remember them now but I loved her. Like she was kinda modern type of Muslim but I thought she was still yeah good.
Theeeeen I saw Dust a niqabi girl (I was not niqabi but so many people in my family were so it's something familiar and close to me). And she was praying. And she was readin Qur'an. And she was giving attention to Islamic rules. And she was doing fine mostly. Surge was yeah bad at first but I also loved it too because it was realistic. Or Rockslide helping her to hide herself when she have her hair open etc. Like it was good things it was bad thing but close to real.
And I loved it I literally protected myself into her. If she can then I can too without giving what I believe can still live the life I want be part of things I want.
Anyways I don't know why I did write this actually I think it was about Muslim characters and me and also me wanting characters that written realistically instead of idilistic wonderful lives with full of acceptance. Like yeah write a trans hijabi girl I was one for a while but it's more complex you can't just make them like your average character but just wear hijab it's more more complex then that. It doesn't feel like something to care about as representation. But you know this is probably extremely personal preference.
And last thing I am not Muslim anymore like for years ago I left it. I don't believe even supernatural now. But still I am very culturally Muslim even when I am not realising it. And people I love is Muslim. I have trauma but I don't have problems with positive sides of religion or people finding happiness on it.
So yeah it makes me happy good Muslim representation and also because of this I want ex-muslim religious trauma suffering characters without being Islamaphobic. But also without being extremely woobified. Like not a perfect wonderful minority. Because Muslims not even minority in most of places and so so so flawed people but also not Devils with objectively bad religion. Your average Muslim is literally same as your average Christian. In fact same as your average Buddhist or Jewish too. I knew it because I met this people and we are literally same when it's not about our religions. Yeah flawed human characters.
I usually have no problems here oversharing and putting cringe nonsense etc. but this feels embarrassing I think because it is too personal?? I just wanted to write something about Muslim characters in comics. Anyways I want diverse and realistic many dimensional religious people not only Muslims but other religions too.

For the name OC ask game, can u do #1 for all the main characters 🕺
i need you to know i would die for you (half-serious, affectionate)
how did you come up with their name?
RIMON : It means "pomegranate" in Hebrew (it's Rimaan in Arabic, too).
“Jewish tradition teaches that the pomegranate is a symbol of righteousness, knowledge, and wisdom because it is said to have 613 seeds, each representing one of the 613 mitzvot (commandments) of the Torah,” Damien Stone writes in Pomegranate: A Global History
Huge symbolism in Judaism, with some even saying that it's the real forbidden fruit instead of an apple. For me personally, it's all over my first tallis, and it's a symbol I hold close to my heart when I think about my faith. I thought it was perfect for a nonbinary protagonist.
Rimon still doesn't have a surname because Jewish surnames are incredibly indicative of their origin, ESPECIALLY Russian ones because of Russian border changes over time, so I keep procrastinating because I can't decide what exact region their family emigrated from.
DEVORAH "DEV" HADDAD : I just hate the fact that Devorah is anglicized to Deborah/Debbie. I'm sorry if you're reading this and like the name. I immediately wanted to rep the original. Dev's Mizrahi, and I really liked "blacksmith" since she's such an iron-fisted character.
FAIZA ABDELRAHMAN : "Faiza" means successful, and Faiza has her shit together the most of any of the characters, so I couldn't help it. Abdelrahman means "servant of the Merciful," and constitutes one of my favorite Muslim surnames. Faiza is a love letter to the amazing Muslim women that have graced my life in past and present.
YAEL : Yael means "Nubian ibex" in Hebrew and has been disputably been used in a unisex fashion. I thought it was a fitting mental image for a jittery, type A second-in-command who has a lot of potential but is also rather flighty. I also use it as a psuedonym sometimes so I'm partial to its sound.
ARIEL : I have met a lovely number of Ariels of all genders, and I love that it means "lion of G-d." I thought it was a really good image for a lazy, jovial trans man who doesn't do much of the work at his job but is still a ferocious enemy if you challenge his "pride."
ZOHAR : Suggested by @v-ahavta. T'wasn't until I told my partner that I was reminded the Zohar is also a very important (arguable one of the most famous) piece of Kabbalah literature in Judaism. What a coinkidink.

I remember watching dil lagi as a kid for the first time and I really did loved the drama- scratch that, I ENJOYED every second of it. Until humayun's character slapped her :/ OMFGGG WHYYYYYY LITERALLY JUST WHY
why the FUCK do the makers love slapping their heroines so much. You bitches love hitting women so bad I genuinely hope every single one of you die. This is the same problem I had with o rangreza. I actually gasped so hard when q*sim slapped sassi. Cuz that was genuinely so shocking to me it felt so out of character omgggg I could rant about this all day. And then the makers try to redeem him by burning his hand 💀 11 year old me was not having it. I hate pakistani dramas with a passion with the exception of dastaan (tho hassan can, like, go away)
the thing that irritates me about it is that the slap concept is built into a lot of dramas as an inherent arbitrary thing that simply happens in a marriage (to the point that one of the biggest dramas this year engaged in it.. before the marriage even..) but dil lagi actively tried to like. make some sort of warped commentary about it and how mohid had to slap anmol so she would shut up and not defame her own character but also it was bad bc by slapping her he was defaming her character anyway and he should've known better than to do that but also she shouldn't have jumped to conclusions and assumed he was defaming her character which subsequently necessitated her yelling about how he was purportedly defaming her character and led to the slap.. like it was so abominably dumb and unnecessary, even moreso because it was placed at the literal tail end of the drama to create the most useless conflict ever. the entire appeal of the drama and the romance was in the fact that mohid was as placid as a lake and willing to be battered by every ounce of anmol's hatred until she came to realize on her own terms how much he cared about her, and instead that moment completely ruined it and any romantic momentum the drama originally had going for it. in one sense ig it wasn't unsurprising for a faiza iftikhar script bc while she does have a tendency to promote progressive depictions of love every once in a while the traditional religio-cultural practices do jump out. but it was such a shame and really tamped down everything else i had loved about the drama prior
also omg the fact that you were only 11 when o rangreza was airing you were a baaaaaby 😭 i really loved the commentary on sassi's relationship with her father but the sassi and qasim relationship's execution overall was very odd to digest and that slap is definitely a part of it. in general it's sad how few dramas there are that condemn that kind of abuse, even if it only comes down to one instance of it, unequivocally. i think there are dramas that have condemned consistent abuse (kankar, khaas, both of which are ironically sanam baloch dramas) but i've yet to see a drama where even a single slap is rightfully viewed for the horrific thing it is. interestingly dil lagi tried to view it as horrific but there were so many qualifiers to the situation that the alleged condemnation of the slap didn't have much weight to it (and who knows, maybe it would've had more weight if this was a storyline they'd pursued in the middle of the show rather than the end of it. though obv more than anything i would've preferred the drama to have no slap at all bc it wasn't necessary to their relationship in any logical sense). i'd really like to see a drama where a girl puts her foot down for good even if it only happens once

I’m not here to spread conspiracy theories lol. Because I know nothing. However, sometimes I wonder what role Maya’s cousins had to play in her breaking off her friendship with Faiza and Saqlain. Clearly Maya elevated the FS brand to a whole new level by constantly wearing them, and their friendship broke off shortly after Maya Pret came around, a brand her cousins helped find. I wonder if her cousins told her to stop promoting others and promote her own brand, and this somehow lead to their eventual fall out. Maya loves her friends fiercely but she also seems like someone who would always always put blood over water, so to speak. Originally faiza seemed ok with MP becoming a thing, but within a few months of the MP launch is when they fell apart.
Again I know nothing. Have just always wondered about this.
I guess one consolation is that Maya Pret seems to be doing really well. For a brand that’s about two?? years old to have as big of a following as it does is impressive.
I mean..it's not too far from the realm of possibilities considering the timing of the fallout. MP initially had no originality and appeared as a cheap knockoff of FS designs. even till now some of the MP designs are too "inspired" by other designers to be a coincidence. Lord only knows who had how much part to play. I am just happy that MP has found its footing and a loyal clientele. idk about the rest of the brand but as Maya's personal wardrobe, the label is doing a great job. both her sarees in JBG and now the traditional wear in Yunhi have gained praise. for a brand that has her name on it, MP is a very good representative of Maya's style.
(although of course i'd love to see her in other designers as well. Maya x MNR is just..uff..i can never tire of that!)

Art Education.
Faiza Ali
ART 15500
Professor Gutierrez
May 17, 2023
This art education course was a very informational course. This class, in general, is very hands-on and has you excited to learn and create art even if it is 10 in the morning. Every day throughout this course we learned about different artists and their art styles and how their art form brings awareness to a current event and addresses a specific issue. We talked about racial, political, cultural, and many other topics, some of which may even seem controversial. I loved all the discussions we had.
I liked all the assignments and projects we did in this class but the one I liked the most was the Kehinde Wiley project. When we were discussing Kehinde Wiley, I enjoyed looking at how he used such unique and vibrant colors to surround a person, specifically a black person in the middle. I liked seeing the art side to side, classical art that was originally centered around white people, Kehinde altered with his own twist and drew a black person.
Looking at the two paintings below, we can see the original photo on top, and on the bottom, we can see what Kehinde did and his twist on the original painting. He chose to create a completely different and vibrant background keeping the horse the same and placing a black man on the horse whereas the original had a white man on the horse. So I liked the way he added black representation on art that normally consisted of white people.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When completing the project, I enjoyed being able to express myself. When the project was presented to us I immediately knew what I wanted to do. I got to express the way I think and the way I perceive life just through a simple project. I chose to use roses as my background symbol because of their color and what the roses represent to me. The colors red and green symbolize the colors of my flag and where my family is from. The roses symbolize the bittersweetness of life because with a beautiful flower comes painful thorns and this expresses my outlook on life.
Overall, this art class encouraged me to be a bit more creative in the way I express myself. I learned a lot in this class about what it means to be an educator and what it takes to work with students having them engage in your activities. I also learned the importance of using art as a form of spreading information and awareness on different issues. Art is more than just a painting; it comes in all different sizes, styles, mediums, and ways of expression. Art is an important part of our society, without it the world wouldn't be the same and this class really showed me how important it is. If I could take this class again I 100% would and I recommend everyone take it if they can.

hi faiza!! ramadan mubarak to you!
i wanted to ask which desi songs you think fit akktheo the most? im trying to make a desi playlist for them but blanking.
hiii anon!!! ramadhan mubarak to you toooo!!! ohhhhh ok ok ok. i mean a lot of desi songs i listen to are mostly qawalis nowadays BUT!! i have a few!
jag ghoomeya:
"jag ghoomeya, thaare jaisa na koi."
i've gone around the world, but there's no one like you.
tu jaane na:
"kaise bataaye kyun tujhko chaahe yaara bataa na paaye. baathain dilo ki dekho jo baaki, aankhain tujhe samjhaaye. tu jaane na."
how do i tell you why i like you, my friend i can't tell you. those unsaid words that still remain in my heart, my eyes will try to explain them to you. you don't know.
banjaara:
"koi mujhko yoon mila hain, jaise banjaare ko ghar."
i've found some one in the same way like a nomad finds a home.
samjhawan (original / alia's version).
"nahin jeena tere baaju, nahin jeena. main tenu samjhawan ki, na tere bina lagda jee. tu ki jaane pyaar mera? main karu intezaar tera. tu dil tu yun jaan meri."
i don't wish to live without you, i don't wish to live. i'll try and explain to you, that without you my heart feels nothing towards anything. what do you know of my love? i wait for you. you are my heart, my soul.
tere sang yaara
"o tere sang yaara, kushrang bahaara. main tera ho jaun, jo tu karde ishaara. o tere sang yaara, kushrang bahaara. main behta musaafir, tu tehra kinaara."
o, with you my beloved, it's like being in a colourful spring. i'll be yours, if you just give me a sign. o, with you my beloved, it's like being in a colourful spring. i'm a flowing traveller, and you're a still shore.
rehna tu
"rehna tu, hain jaise tu. thoda sa dard tu, thoda sukoon. rehna tu, hain jaise tu. dheema dheema jonkha, ya phir junoon. thoda sa resham, tu hamdam, thoda sa khurdhura. khabhi tu arr jaaye, ya lar jaaye, ya khushboo se bhara. tujhne badalna na chaahu."
stay the way you are, just like you are. sometimes, you're a little pain, and sometimes a little relief. stay the way you are, just like you are. like a slow gentle breeze, or sometimes a whirlwind. a little like silk, that's what you are my beloved, and a little rough. sometimes, you'll be stubborn, or sometimes, you'll fight with me, or sometimes, you're full of fragrance. but i don't ever wish to change you.
jashn - e - bahaara (purely just for the rose petal shower scene like i cannot stop associating this song to that scene)
"kehne ko jashn e bahaara hain, ishq yeh dekh ke hairaan hain."
it's a celebration of spring so to say, and love herself is amazed to witness this."
+ and as a bonus:
