‘Oh come on,’ jeered Ram playfully as he dribbled the ball around you, ‘you can do better than that.’

You furrowed your brow, turning quickly and watched as he made his way down the end of the pitch. He paused in the goal. ‘Now you’re just showing off, Singh,’ you mumbled under your breath, before jogging to meet him.

He waited until you were just close enough to stop him. He waited until your foot was about to tackle the ball away from him, before he finally kicked the thing in the goal before you could stop him.

He shot you a cheeky little smile before shrugging slightly, walking backwards to retrieve the ball. ‘You know, if we wanted to make this more –’

‘We’re not putting bets on how often and imaginatively you can hand my arse to me, Ram!’ you said, somewhat more shrilly than you’d expected. ‘Let’s just play football.’

His smirk deepened. ‘I’m trying to, I didn’t realise you were as well.’

You rolled your eyes, unable to stop a small smirk from curling your own lips.

Things had been getting harder for Ram. Strange things had been going on in Coal Hill, and while you were curious about every one of them, you wanted to make sure that your friend was OK above all else. The two of you had always been close, always messing around and joking about.

Following what had happened to Rachel, however, you were trying to be there for him, ready when he wanted to talk.

‘Hey,’ he said, catching up with you as you wandered home. You turned around to look at him, but there was something different about him. You could see the emotions bubbling up to the surface, closer than he usually tried to let them be.

‘You all –?’ you started, but before you could finish he’d pulled you into a tight hug. For a moment you were too shocked to do anything, but then you hugged him back, trying to reassure him.

‘Thank you,’ he mumbled against you, and you could feel the wetness on your shirt.

‘I’m always here, Ram,’ you assured him, resting your chin on his head for a moment, wishing there was more that you could do to help him.
