Tips on writing about: Birth!
So, I gave birth in early November. Just thought I'd quickly jot down some tips for anyone new who is writing about a character giving birth, anything to do with it, etc.
sometimes, a person will need inducing. This can be for many reasons. E.g. Medical problems (Gestational diabetes, Cholestasis), Being overdue with no sign of the baby coming, weight problems with the baby.
I'll be real, it hurts. Bad. Imagine period pain X10. With feeling like you need to go to the toilet. Bad.
Might think they can do it alone at first (I did), but will soon be begging for anyone to be called to come to them. (Also me).
Sometimes, an emergency c section is required. I had to have one for example because my labour wasn't progressing. In total, I was in labour for 15 hours. Active labour for 8 hours 20 mins of those 15 hours.
Please research on c sections! It's not easier, it's harder. You're awake when they cut you open, numb from the waist down, so you can't lift your legs (which is what they ask you to try and do before the surgery). All you can feel is tugging and pulling, but when the spinal block wears off later, you'll feel it. You can't bend down, lift anything heavy, drive, or walk too much for about 6-8 weeks. Or until a doctor says you can.
You can also get an infection in your wound. Requires antibiotics. (I was on two different ones for 10 days).
In my case, though others will be different, my wound turned properly into a scar after 7 weeks postpartum.
Sometimes a midwife has to break your waters, as you can go into labour WITHOUT them breaking.
To add to this, you have two waters when pregnant. Front and back waters. Front waters is what is typically shown to break. I had to have my front waters broke , but my back waters went a few days before getting induced. I didn't know until they said I didn't have any.
If having gas and air, it makes you feel like you're drunk. Like "I've just had a drink too fast" type of drunk.
You can cry during labour. I did. There's no shame in it.
BUT it's all worth it to have your little baby born and to see them and hold them for the first time.
