Eldritch Cultist: WITNESS THE APATHY OF THE UNIVERSE YOU CARE SO MUCH FOR! Cultist unleashes a vision of horrific cosmic indifference:
Paladin:
Paladin: Was that supposed to do something? I mean, sure it's upsetting, but.
Eldritch Cultist: WHy aren't you insane? Gone blind from the horror? Turned into tentacle slurry? Something!?
Paladin: I and the Ideals and Powers I serve are the engine and the hands thought which the cosmos shows it cares. So long as there is just one of me, then you have lost.
Paladin: So now that we're done wasting time.

Monster!Tim Coraline AU Idea
This idea would not leave me alone.
It’s a cross between a meta!/magic!Tim au and a Coraline au.
Before I get into it, I feel like I should explain.  I was on a bit of an Eldritch!Batfamily and Cryptid!Batfamily kick.  Then I found a collection of supernatural Tim aus.  Then I stumbled across a Coraline au.  There’s probably also some inspiration in there from vampire au fics.
It didn’t really jell until the idea occurred to me of a scene where some frightened villain asks Tim “What kind of monster are you?” and Tim says “The hungry kind.”
...
The idea is that somewhere back along the way, Tim’s family tree includes some kind of supernatural creature which may or may not have been an eldritch entity.
The supernatural heritage allows Tim to acquire abilities from other entities he has defeated, and Gotham is absolutely full of the supernatural if you pay attention.
Of course, Tim’s power isn’t all sunshine and rainbows.  It actually comes packaged with some pretty nasty side effects.
One of those side effects is perpetual Hunger.  Tim is always Hungry.  There is no way to stop it.  He eats enough to stay healthy, but he still feels Hunger at all times.  Increasing his food intake will not help and will screw up his metabolism and cause him to need more for normal function.  If this was allowed to spiral out of control it could eventually reach a point where he was physically unable to eat the amount of food he needed to function and starved to death on a full stomach.
Fixing it is stupid hard because this particular sort of magical inheritance is really fucking inconvenient.  And, of course, whatever is up with his biology also makes him insanely susceptible to addiction, so no coffee for him unless he wants caffeine withdrawal symptoms all the time for however long it takes to fix that.  The constant Hunger also makes it difficult to get enough sleep.  Have you ever tried to go to sleep on an empty stomach?  Not easy, was it?  Imagine that every night.
The Hunger is fairly central to the nature of the magic.  Whatever supernatural entity he’s descended from, it is the Hungry kind.  The ritual of defeating another supernatural entity, taking a bit of the defeated entity’s power, and incorporating it into himself serves as a sort of metaphorical devouring, (and metaphors matter more to magic than they do to normal biology).  That’s why he’s able to gain power and abilities from defeated foes.
...
Tim’s relationship with his parents is complicated.  His supernatural heritage comes from his mother’s side of the family.  She did her best to teach him about it and how to cope with it, but a lot of knowledge was lost over the generations due to persecution forcing those like them into hiding more than once.  There may have been a few individuals who spiraled out of control and caused small-scale famines before losing their lives.  It only takes a few cases for people to decide that a specific category of people is simply not worth the risk of having around.  Janet always referred to herself and Tim (as well as anyone else sharing the condition) as “those afflicted with Gluttony.”  This is the closest they have to a name for the condition.
One of the important things Janet Drake teaches her son is to pursue his passions.  It is incredibly important for individuals like them to have things outside the self that they can draw satisfaction and fulfilment from, things that keep them going in the face of the relentless Hunger.  This is what leads Tim to his night-time photography of Gotham, and eventually to his fascination with the Bats.
Janet’s passions are archeology and travel.  Unfortunately, traveling from dig site to dig site is not a particularly stable or safe environment to raise a child in.  She needs to do these things to remain in good health.  Without her external coping mechanisms, she could start spiraling.  If she starts spiraling, it might trigger her son to start spiraling too because children in their developmental years are delicate, and this type of hereditary magic is fucking inconvenient (there might be ways of managing things that make it easier to live with, but between the knowledge lost and the risks that come with experimentation, they don’t have much info on how anything works).  She comes home as much as she can without the risk of compromising both their health.
She also taught Tim how to calculate appropriate portion sizes based on nutritional data so as not to screw up his metabolism, and how to fix it if he does mess up.  She also stayed and managed the process the first time it happened because the process of returning the metabolism of one afflicted with Gluttony to normal after it’s gotten out of hand is difficult and unpleasant and Tim wasn’t old enough to handle it by himself.  The nanny that had overfed him hadn’t been malicious or unreasonable, she’d just been operating on the assumption that he had standard human biology.  It took months to get Tim healthy again.  It took several hefty bribes to keep things under wraps.  Janet doesn’t know if there are still people out there hunting their kind, but she’s not willing to risk it.
Janet may not know about the aspect of the family magic that lets them gain powers from defeating other entities.  It’s possible that she was holding off on explaining this until he was older and more ready for the responsibility of multiple superpowers.  It’s also possible that the knowledge got lost somewhere along the way and Janet didn’t discover it herself because she didn’t spend her childhood running around Gotham at night and was more the sort of person who would stay home and read when she had trouble sleeping.
...
Tim discovers his ability to gain abilities from defeating other supernatural things fairly early on.  The type of defeat can vary, but it has to be something of significance.  A fight will work for most, but there are other particular challenges that will work for specific cases.
The first things a young Tim is able to beat are these small things, invisible to most, that gain power from learning secrets.  What that power is used for, I couldn’t tell you.  They don’t seem to do much other than sneak around and learn secrets.  Tim doesn’t know if there’s a proper name for these things or not, but he calls them Secret Hunters.  They are absolutely everywhere in Gotham.
Secret Hunters are invisible to most, but Tim is able to see them.  It might be because of his own supernatural nature, or it might be something else entirely.  If it’s hereditary it must have skipped his parents’ generation.  Neither of them seem to be able to see them.  Tim gains improved stealth and a sense for when something is hidden from catching Secret Hunters until they wise up and start avoiding him.  (Catching them works in place of a fight because secret hunters primarily operate on stealth and evasion.)
He can’t just magically know secrets, but he can tell when there is a secret.  (He still figured out Batman’s and Robin’s secret identities on his own merit.  The most this ability would have done is alert him to the fact that they had secret identities if that hadn’t already been obvious from the fact that they were wearing masks.)
He also gets various other abilities from other things he encounters while scrambling all over Gotham at night.  Nearly doesn’t get out of some of the scrapes he gets himself into.  He gains the ability to cut with his fingernails as if they were razors from something that nearly killed him.  He gains the ability to climb like a goat from a Jersey Devil.  Etc.
...
At some point, Tim is targeted by a beldam.  He doesn’t get the kind of warnings that Coraline does, but his ability to sense secrets lets him know that the Beldam is hiding something, and any child raised in any part of Gotham knows to be suspicious of things that seem too good to be true.  Tim doesn’t have a convenient seeing stone from the neighbor, but he does have the advantage of his own supernatural nature which the Beldam doesn’t know about.
Tim finds a button-eyed doll that looks like him after his parents leave on yet another trip, and thinks it’s a gift they meant to give him before leaving.  They do often bring interesting souvenirs.  It wouldn’t be at all unusual for them to find an artist who sews dolls to look like people and have one made based on pictures of him.  Later on, he discovers the key.
This Beldam is older and more powerful than the one from Coraline.  She has more power and more past victims to work with, so she’s able to make a larger, more populated world.
Oh by the way, I head-canon that the Other versions of people in the Other world are actually past victims of the Other Mother, remade and dressed up for whatever role she has them play.  The three ghosts were just the three most recent and not fully processed for use yet.  That’s why the Others are able to act against her sometimes (Other Wybie saving Coraline from the mirror, Other Father tossing the eye to Coraline) or say things she doesn’t want them too (Other Father says “so sharp you won’t feel a thing” and Other Mother kicks him under the table).
The Other Mother doesn’t know all that Tim knows, so the Other World has inconsistencies like Other Batman and Other Robin sitting across the table from Other Bruce and Other Jason.  She doesn’t know they’re the same people.  She just knows that they’re all important to Tim.  She also tries to tell him to “eat as much as he wants” when his real mother was the one to explain the dangers of attempting to eat to fullness for people with their condition.
There isn’t a cat to warn Tim but he doesn’t need it.  He can sense hidden intentions in everything, and he’s fully capable of uncovering the hidden secrets himself.
Tim doesn’t have a cat, but he does have Other Robin, who might have been made from whatever remained of someone close to one of the people mirrored in the Other World made for Tim.  He doesn’t remember his life, but somehow he feels incredibly motivated to help a boy who cares dearly for whoever and is willing to let him know that they're living a good life out there in the real world.
Tim discovers the nature of the other world and sets out to free the souls trapped there.  He fights the Beldam will all the viciousness and desperation of someone who knows they’ve only got one shot.  He takes everything he can from this fight as he makes sure she won’t ever hurt anyone again.  He doesn’t stop until the beldam is well and truly dead.  Then he unravels Other Gotham and spills all of the souls out into the world where they can move on and rest.
This is how Tim learns to Sew.  He can’t make entire populated worlds like the beldam, but that’s mostly because he refuses to do what she did.  He can control things he’s made (though there’s limits on how much) and even see through buttons he’s sewn (onto cushions and such, he's not the Other Mother).  He also gets some minor illusory powers that let him make things look a bit brighter/nicer/cheerier than they are.  It takes quite some time before he’s comfortable with using these powers.  Trauma is a bitch like that.
Part of the reason this version of Tim was so desperate to do something about Batman losing it out of grief is because he already has Evil Batman trauma from Other Batman, and he doesn’t need that shit happening in real Gotham.
By this point Tim has a collection of powers that allow him to navigate the more dangerous parts of Gotham largely without fear.  Now he has to learn how to manage without using any that he isn’t one hundred percent certain he can sneak past Batman, which means he’ll have to divide his attention between learning from the training and not letting himself do things the supernatural way.  This is going to suck.
It does, in fact, suck.
Oh, it turns out some of the rogues are a bit supernatural.  He gains a bit of an intuitive understanding of the health of plants from Ivy.  He gains the ability to taste emotions from Scarecrow.  (Also, Johnathan Crane is a freaking weirdo, fear tastes like spoiled milk!)  The rogues with supernatural tendencies are freaking terrified of the new Robin because he always seems like he wants to freaking eat them.  The non-supernatural types don’t get it.
Eventually, Red hood breaks into Titan’s tower.  Tim, by this point, is very good at deciphering how supernatural entities work and is packing an extensive inventory of powers.  He realizes quickly that this is some kind of manipulative entity that feeds on rage and pain attached to an unwitting host.  When he realizes that the unknowing (and therefore unconsenting) host is Jason Todd, he tells the Lazarus Entity in no uncertain terms to give Jason back or perish.
Jason, who does not realize he has a malicious, mind-warping, supernatural parasite and believes there to be no one other than himself and Tim present, is understandably confused.
Tim decides that the Lazarus entity has had its chance and springs into action.
Jason is treated to the terrifying sight of just what Tim Drake is like when he’s not expending conscious effort on not being something out of a horror movie.  Suddenly he’s in the middle of a spider’s web and no matter how hard he tries to fight back everything around him is under the control of his opponent.  Furniture flies around on puppet strings.  Getting too close puts him in range of the freaking claws this kid apparently has!?  Trying to get away just leaves him caught in strings and the more he struggles the more entangled he becomes!  The new Robin is skittering and gliding around in a decidedly inhuman way.
Jason honestly thinks he's going to die when he finds himself bound with Tim standing over him.  He passes out when Tim rips the Lazarus entity away from him and destroys it.
Tim gains the ability to heal from defeating the Lazarus entity.
Jason is surprised and confused when he wakes up bundled in a handmade quilt with his head in Tim’s lap and a cool compress on his forehead, feeling sore but more well and whole than he has since before he died.
Jason later decides that his memories of the fight at Titans Tower must be some kind of weird fever dream caused by his body purging the last of the Lazarus Water from his system. It goes along with Tim's account of things.
According to Tim, Jason entered the tower, initiated a lock-down, and then collapsed on the floor. Then, Tim moved him closer to a wall where he was less likely to get stepped on than in the middle of the walkway and did his best to take care of him there because Jason was simply too large and heavy for him to carry all the way to the med bay by himself.
This is far more believable and less of a mind screw than what Jason remembers. Obviously this tiny, baby-faced kiddo who played nursemaid for a stranger who broke into the tower and now looks up at him with wide, starry eyes couldn't actually be the terrifying, predatory creature from the nightmare. It was all just a bad dream.
He's honestly glad he collapsed before he had time to do any harm. The poor kid will never have to know what Jason went there to do. Jason knows, though, and he'll do his damned best to make up for it. He may have flubbed first impressions, but he is going to be the best damn big brother that ever big brothered.
...
Tim might or might not go full on feral cryptid when Bruce is lost in the Timestream. I haven't decided. He will probably pick a fight with the Lazarus Pit much to the confusion and alarm of everyone around.
That’s all I’ve got so far.

Next is Megalon!
I'll be real with you, I'm not a huge fan of Megalon if I'm 100% honest. Humanoid bugs aren't for me. But, I will not deny his place in Kaiju history and a redesign by my hand. I wanted to put my own spin on him, so I leaned heavy on his original silhouette and coloration for the redesign, but put my own ancient/eldritch spin on it.
-----
Lore: When Gigan entered Earth's atmosphere, his very presence awakened a dormant monstrosity. In ancient texts and parables, a beast that heralded from the far reaches of space had arrived on Earth before mankind took their first steps. Rather than consuming the stone, foliage and water as well as all the living creatures that the planet was home to, the being adopted the form of what it deemed the hardest working fauna that the planet had to offer.
Eventually it became a god to lost civilizations of mankind. "Megalon," as they would come to call it. His eyes that could see through the endless night. His piercing horn that could drive away any foe. His drilling arms that would crack the Earth and create flow ways for water as well as grooves for all species to use as homes. His powerful wings that could carry his body great distances.
Megalon revealed himself after Gigan arrived, and though the two of them were opposed initially, Megalon's eyes fell upon the surface of Earth. He could see that mankind had strayed too far from their initial purpose, tearing Earth apart and using her resources to harm the planet.
He opted to become an ally to Gigan. Their goal being to erase mankind from the face of the Earth and give rise to a new species that would cherish and care of the only world they'd been privileged to call a home.
He used his divinity, his otherworldly and ancient strength to manifest many arms to help cure the planet of the curse that mankind had become.
That was, until they were stopped by... God's Abomination.

actually no, you know what? i'm still not off my divine soul sorcerer dark urge bs, here:
Gale sees a goblin sneaking up on Durge a bit too late, only for them to whip around, grab the goblin by the face, and engulf them in necrotic energy. Far too strong for a cantrip. When he asks them about it later, they can only shrug. Another mystery from their past, they suppose.
Back against the wall, Wyll blasts an enemy with eldritch energy, pushing them right into Durges' range. Their attack misses, and suddenly Durge is engulfed in a flurry of movement, like they're repeating the attack backwards. He blinks, and Durge is standing over their foe, teeth bared in a hunter's imitation of a smile. When he thinks on it at camp, he can only shake his head. Some trick of the light. Or Mizora's, most like.
Shadowheart grits her teeth and readies a mass healing word (nothing about this fight has gone their way, but they have to keep pushing). Durge lays a hand on her shoulder, whispers "Let me help you with that," and feels a divine energy surge through her. Not a shadowy stillness, or a comforting glow, but a ravenous ache that demands blood, blood, BLOOD.
The group gets their second wind.

Heart-Purr is another of my dnd characters that has a very unique build. She is a humble, traveling tabaxi bard who plays her enthralling hurdy-gurdy tunes to downtrodden souls. At least, that's how she appears on the surface. Her real name is Fuchsia, and behind her fluffy disguise is a monstrous thri-kreen hypnotic illusionist, a form she trusts very few to see.
In a past life she used her bewitching powers to amass wealth through a host of hapless victims. But in time she realized her ability to pierce into people's minds could be used to help instead of hurt; She could soothe and heal anxious, troubled, haunted minds, a task that felt infinitely more fulfilling than scrambling their brains for coin. Unfortunately, Fuchsia's life of manipulation caught up to her (she may have extorted a wealthy crime syndicate), and was forced to flee from her homeland. From there, "Heart-Purr" found herself in a foreign nation and thrust into a harrowing adventure where the fate of the world hung in the balance. Also, evil clowns.
Now I'm gonna rattle off some fun facts about her build because honestly I'm still proud of it...
Fuchsia is a 3rd Level Eloquence Bard / 2nd Level Archfey Warlock multiclass.
Thanks to class bonuses, the lowest she can possibly roll on a Deception Check is 19.
She has the Mask of Many Faces Invocation, allowing her to maintain her "Heart-Purr" form indefinitely. She also had the Duel Personalities background feature, further bolstering her ruse. The other players did not know she was a Thri-kreen was she joined the party, and Fuchsia managed to go entirely undetected during the campaign. Ultimately, she chose to willingly reveal her true form to the party.
Because her Heart-Purr form lacks the extra arms of her Thri-kreen form, when she dual-wields daggers with those arms, the daggers appear to just hover in midair (she claims to have telekinetic powers to explain this).
Fuchsia prefers to be a "hands off" sort of combatant though; she has low damage output herself, but has several spells and abilities that force the Charmed condition on enemies, making her foes do the dirty work for her.
With the right combination of spells and abilities, she can give enemies anywhere from -3 to -14 to their saving throws, making it extremely difficult for them to resist her mental manipulations. And with her Eldritch Mind, she is also good at maintaining those Charms.
Because she's a Monstrosity, she's protected from a number status spells that only affect Humanoids (notably Charm Person), making her difficult to Charm herself.
My favorite combat moment in the campaign was when she mind controlled a massive, eldritch Iron Maiden that was destroying a city. But then an enemy spellcaster wrested control by Charming it themself, which Heart-Purr did not stand for and Charmed it right back, and from there the encounter spiraled into those two fighting a mental battle for control over the metal monster. It was legit one of the coolest things I've ever experienced in a combat.

More DP x DC au prompts:
_ Amity's Exception: If you listen to DISTRACTIBLE Podcast featuring Markiplier, Bob and Wade on Spotify or YouTube, then you would have heard the episode with the Aladdin exception. So it's a similar concept, where the only people that can really help amity are either magicians or the non-meta batfamily.
_I'm a monster and I'll make you suffer: Danny is tired, tired of all the hate he gets, from the town he is trying to protect, from the GIW who want to eradicate his species, from his bullies and Vlad, from Sam and Tucker voicing their opinions on ghosts and not letting him think for himself and definitely from his crazed up ghost-hunting parents. One day, a big battle happens between him and another ghost that result in a misunderstanding, that they can both agree it was a mistake, but the fentons show up and start spewing bias nonsense about ghost kind. Sam publicly tries to defend the ghost, but ultimatly is bribed by her parents to confirm the fentons bias. Danny vehemently denies their facts and says he is not a monster, though they firmly believe he is one. Unknowingly, Circe or Klarion is in town and decides to cause some chaos. (Ghost have an funky reaction to magic.)
Circe or Klarion hits Danny with a spell at the same time as the fentons shoots their ghost revealer weapon and the whole town watches as their hero mutates into an eldritch creature. At first Danny screeches in pain as his form shifts, his face melts off to show his now space like skin, four more sets of eyes appear on his face all fully the neon green, his fangs become more pronounce and elongated, he slowly grows another set of arms with claws, a tail, two pairs of wings and a set of horns on his head, all matching his space skin. He is also quite bigger in this form and all his scars are visible. Suddenly the former phantom screeches, paralyzing all around him with fear as he books it out of town. (Sidenote that screech was so powerful, he was able to close the Portal to amity including Masters one in amity as he was the one to introduce ectoplasm to amity park.)
After Eldritch Phantom leaves, only the fentons are really happy before realizing their son is gone, so when Jazz and Danny's friends explain what really happened and where Danny is, they are shocked to discover that they sent their boy away, they decide they are going to find Danny and help him get back to normal before figuring out how to support his new changes. (Not great! Jack and Maddie, but they care for their son.)
Meanwhile, Vlad is searching for Danny with Skulker hoping to manipulate him into joining his side and curing his new form. To his surprise, Danny's new form is too much too handle and is forced to retreat. (Danny is definitely stronger than Vlad, due to the exposure of pure ectoplasm and the size of the portal. Keep in mind, Danny's brain is similar to a wild aggressive animal now, and while Danny struggled as a human ghost, he has no problem curb-stomping Plasmius now.)
Somehow this gets on JL or YJ radar and are forced to confront E! Danny. It's a difficult battle for whoever is fighting him, till the resident feeling reader attempt to read E! Danny's mind. All the team hear is <Pain... Fear... Sorrow... Anger...Betrayal...Too Young to Suffer... Alone... Child..> and that's what clues themselves in on something different about this foe. They are able to calm him down somewhat.
At the same time, the Fentons and Jasmine have clued onto Danny's signature and are approaching him. Danny sees them and starts to freak out more thinking they were here to end him. Jasmine is the only one safe enough to practically be beside eldritch! Danny and he won't panic. The team asks who the fentons are and they reply that they are the boy turned beast's parents. They somehow are able to get E! Danny to the watchtower where the resident magicians are able to craft bracelets that will hide Danny's new true form, while his parents try to figure out how to reverse the effects of their invention on Danny. ( They don't realize magic was involved, so it did not work.)
When Danny is able to speak again, his parents profusely try to apologize for hurting him, but it's a little too late. Danny gives them an ultimatum: Either destroy or move their life's work and focus more on the family, with more scientific proof of their theories or lose both Jasmine and himself forever. It's because Danny explains to them that Jazz and himself shouldn't have been to be the responsible ones in the family at a young age, that Jazz shouldn't have taken the role of Mom to take care of Danny, that they should notice when he comes injured by bullies and not assume it's ghost and listen to them for christ sake. That Danny and Jazz's lives are permanently damaged by literally growing up with unstable and untested chemicals and guns around them.
Route A: They agree to the demands, are forced to attend family counseling with the kids and rework their entire world views.
Route B: They disagree, thinking they know better than their kids. The fentons are sentenced to jail for child endangerment, child abuse, needing mental help among many others and all their asset are frozen and given to their kids.
If Vlad even tries to adopt Danny and Jazz, it will get denied because the JL know who Danny is and he has told them all about Vlad and his methods, the GIW and the Anti-Ecto Acts, so even if Vlad looks in his direction, it's automatic engage on site.

5 TTRPGs to Try in 2023
With the OGL being a thing WotC is certainly hitting rock bottom, this is a great time to try out new TTRPGs! I'm not going to recommend you Pathfinder 2e because that is an obvious pick, but if you're looking to expand your experiences, here's 5 TTRPGs to check out this 2023. I've also done a post for 2024, so feel free to check that out here if you like this!
1. Fabula Ultima
Tumblr media
Fabula Ultima is a tabletop Japanese roleplaying game, or to put it simply, Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, Ni No Kuni, and so many more classic JRPGs as a tabletop game. A game of Fabula Ultima allows the players to create and design the world in conjunction with the GM and add on to it later with the Fabula/Ultima point system, allowing everyone to contribute to the world building! The actual mechanics are simple however, with minimal math involved and fights taking place like they would in say in the classic Final Fantasy games: enemies on one side of the screen and heroes on the other. No grids needed. Tactics are still full of depth however as you can mix and match 2 - 3 classes together at beginning levels to make any of your favorite JRPG archetypes and work with your team to exploit vulnerabilities of the foes you face. The bond system however allows players to grow more connected with each other abd the world, even getting bonuses for doing it and RPing, which is always a plus. Overall, an amazing fantasy tabletop for anyone who loves JRPGs.
2. Wanderhome
Tumblr media
A pastoral fantasy TTRPG, Wanderhome is Redwall after the war when peace has finally come to the land. In Wanderhome, you take on the role of one of the many beastfolk of Haeth, wandering to somewhere across the land. Together with the GM or with no GM at all, everyone will make the towns and fantastical locations you come across together, populating them with NPCs and stories, all made with a simple trait system. Speaking of trait system, that's exactly what you use to build your character! You pick a playbook and from there pick traits and various things you can do, these aren't hard and set the only things you can do mind you, just things you're capable of. The gameplay itself is mostly about telling stories and solving problems via giving and taking, do something difficult and you'll be able to get a token that'll let you create story elements later on to help with problems. Via this you can build up a story together with everyone as you wander through the seasons, growing, and eventually leaving, as your journey one day comes to an end.
3. Troika!
Tumblr media
Troika! is a game that exists. A very strange game. One with befoulers of ponds, journeymen from the guild of sharp corners, fellows from the sublime society of beef steaks, and vengeful children. A science fantasy TTRPG, Troika! certainly borrows from OSR but I wouldn't exactly put it in that either. Troika! is in league all its own, one where your adventures across the infinite weird and wonderful lands will certainly make your TTRPG group either concerned for you as the GM or give them a laugh. Plus, it has a vibrant third party community on Itch.io! So, you'll never really run out of new content for the strange game that is Troika! But to understand Troika! you'll need to read it yourself. Really. I can't explain this fever dream of a game.
4. Vaesen: Nordic Horror
Tumblr media
In Call of Cthulhu you fight against eldritch horrors and dangerous cults, in Vaesen you fight against forces of an ancient and terrifying world being pushed aside as the world becomes more and more industrialized. Set in the very real country of Sweden, along with the rest of Northern Europe (and now Britain and Ireland too!) Vaesen is a horror TTRPG where you fight against faefolk, dangerous spirits, trolls, and other monsters of European folklore. Each player is a fairly normal person besides the fact that they have the gift to be able to actually see these monsters, so it's up to you to hunt them down and figure out what's wrong when they cause trouble. Whether that be via a simple conversation or a race against the clock to complete a ritual that will end their terror once and for all. As a Free League game, it uses their dice pool system. Add up together d6s based on your skills and circumstances then if you roll a 6, success! Other than that however, when you're not hunting creatures, you build up your home base, an ancient castle, customizing it according to the your party's needs to create the perfect place to relax after a job well done.
(As of writing this all Vaesen books are available with Forbidden Lands on Humble Bundle. I highly suggest buying it if interested.
5. Agon
Tumblr media
From Evilhat, well known for Fate, Monster of the Week, and Thirsty Sword Lesbians (all great games as well), Agon is yet another amazing game with a focus on storytelling. Agon sets you as a hero of an epic in mythic Greece (but can be easily adapted to other mythos) sailing home and creating your heroic legacy. Gameplay consists of coming upon an island and challenging its threats, win or lose, you continue onwards afterwards dealing with the consequences of whatever happened and your legend grows as fate comes closer to claiming you. The dice system used is easy to pick up, simply requiring you to roll higher than your foe to succeed in contests. But with every success, the more your name die grows and with it, how many will tell your story at journey's end. If you fail however and are drawn closer to your inevitable fate, you also grow stronger for the rest of the game, gaining new boons to aid you in future adventures. If you want a relaxed fantasy journey, pick Wanderhome. If you want an epic adventure worthy of heroes of legend, play Agon. Both are great for one-shots and short 3 - 4 month campaigns however.

The Fall of Throm Zar
Throm Zar was not the largest of the cities built by the Veilborn. But it was first. Before Septarchs, before Veilborn were the dominant faces of Asterta. Throm Zar, built in a place too arid and dry for any but those gifted in the incredible command of magic that the Veilborn had.
In the years since the Sundering began, and the Betrayer began this campaign of genocide, more and more people have flocked to Throm Zar. Seeking guidance, seeking assurance, protection, resources.
Whole nations have been shattered in your conflict with the Betrayer. You started in the wake of the Fallen Entity, you gathered all the arcane might you could muster. You sent legions of Warforged to slow them, your future- your eternity, now bent on killing your past. You unleashed coruscating waves of fire, frost, great storms, beasts, even the power of the planes themselves. And all you bought was time, at the cost of every land you called home, and the very people you swore to defend and uplift.
Rumors say the Betrayer had found allies now. Seven of them. An irony that has not escaped some of you. They kill and destroy all your monuments, all your great works, all of your peoples. Death follows them, and none more than the Betrayer himself. Any attempt at parlay has been rebuffed, asking for reasoning is out of the question. What reasoning could there be to justify the deaths of 300,000 brothers and sisters. What insanity would quiet 300,000 minds, all of whom could feel the death knell of the others? What justification could be made for this violence? What can stop them?
The scene before you reminds you that the Sundering as people have begun to call it, is not one event. It’s many. The dangers and problems abound, aftershocks from the implacable foe that hunts your blood and commits genocide against your people.
Ash and smoke choke the air over the spires and rooftops and floating gardens of Throm Zar. The sky is a burned red. A purple wound ripples in the air above the city, an open gaping gash in reality, it’s tattered edges crumbling open further and further as the wound grows. Within, something writhes. It’s pressing outwards, spilling, like malignant blood into the streets below. It’s all too familiar to the night it all began. With one difference. This time you’re going to stop it.
Author Note: This is the opening to a session I ran a few months ago. In this campaign, the Eldritch Soul Campaign, my players have two characters. A high level group from far in the past, whose memories live in the bodies of their primary characters. In this way, they are both experiencing and creating the history that effects their current troubles and circumstances. Being able to tell stories within stories and find places to allow the narrative of my games to shift between timelines or away from the main heroes to provide my players a broader and deeper understanding of what’s happening in the world and the far reaching effects that have reached them has been an incredible challenge but also an incredible boon to the way this game has been played. My players have created circumstances in one shot games that connect to the main plotline- that their characters rediscover in the main plot. The effects of what the Septarchs have done resonate in the world 1000+ years later. It’s like… deconstructing a mystery from both ends. I’m going to try to post more like this soon.

Wyllvember Day 1: The Blade/ Favourite outfit
A/N: I have not posted my writing on here for literal years, and I overall don't write much anymore (mainly because of fear of writing OOC and my many inconsistencies), but I figured I might try my hand at this. Forgive me for the ugly formatting, I'm writing this on mobile and overall have no clue how to make it look pretty😅. Anyways, let's get this Wyll Ravengard appreciation started! The prompts are from @commander-yinello and @sagscrib -Blue WC:603
The Blade of Frontiers, the protector of the Sword Coast, and its people. The name is known to many. Some whisper it in reverence, shout it in adoration, or mutter it through gritted teeth in loathing. The name carries a weight, a meaning, a notion that one is either going to be saved and protected or crushed under the heel of justice. It inspired an image in one’s mind, whether they have ever seen the Blade in person or not. A picture of justice and righteousness, of gaudiness and pompous heroics. Some imaginings are closer, some further, from the truth. Be that as it may, all of them are right, at least to some extent.
The Blade is a hero, who accompanies his actions with flowery words, creative insults, and some slightly more puzzling phrases. He is a man of many qualities, and though not all are fond of his tendency for theatrics, they must admit he is good. Whether it be his combat prowess or as a person, he is good. Which some may believe to be a weakness, a soft spot to be exploited and bruised. Those people are proven wrong very quickly.
Despite his kindness, his willingness to help those that need it, he is righteous. And there are few things more destructive than righteous fury, accompanied by powers few possess. His white, stone eye blazing as he cracks mountains, calls onto fiendish abilities to burn his enemies from inside out, blast their torsos to smithereens with a few Eldritch Blasts, or poison a small army of soulless wrongdoers with deadly clouds. For no matter how soft his heart is, how embellished and poetic his words are, his fists turn into adamantine when faced with his foes, his tongue turns into a blade sharp enough to put all blacksmiths to shame as incantation after incantation reverberates through the air until not a single enemy is left standing.
And when he returns from battle, when he swoops in to save the poor victims of the monsters he has slain, some remark how the outfit he dons is splattered with blood and soot and ash and unidentifiable organic matter. A view many would find disquieting, terrifying. But the people will only remember his kind gaze, his ebony hair and warm skin as he extends his hand to them, remember the way light reflects off the belts and buckles of his armour, how the hue of the leather contrasts with the unblemished metal.
And later on, when a feast is thrown, when the tavern is filled to bursting with folks celebrating the return of their loved ones and the defeat of the dangers that plagued them, many an eye will watch with keen interest the man responsible for such joy, watch as he laughs, how the fabric of his Splendid Blue outfit tightens around his arms whenever he raises them to toast. Others, in a different region will recall how the simplicity of his Swarthy Wayfarer shirt made them dream of his collarbones like depraved maidens. Some more noble sorts will remark that a particular shade of a Solemnity outfit made him look delectable. If everyone that has ever seen the Blade in a different outfit other than his armour were to meet and a debate on what suits him best would occur, this author is afraid that a brawl might break out on account of the Blade's handsome looks and what best accentuates them.
And as much as this humble writer disagrees with violence over romantic matters, one must admit that such behaviour is not so surprising when faced with someone such as the Blade of Frontiers.

Magic: The Girlbossing: The Final Showdown
Over the course of the past two months, the girlbosses of the multiverse have battled it down for ultimate girlpower supremacy. We've seen some fierce competition throughout this battle, with some surprise upsets along the way! That being said, the time has come for us to end this battle and decide: who is the most girlboss?
Tumblr media
Link to Semifinals Masterpost
Let's get a brief summary of our contestants' feats going into the finals: On the left side of the bracket, we have Khan Alesha of the Mardu! A fearsome warrior from the distant past of Tarkir, and Magic's only canonical transgender woman! In her life, she lead the Mardu Horde, a warrior clan built on three edicts: "to conquer is to eat," "to rule is to bleed," "victory or death." Ancient tales of her exploits tell of her facing battle, leading her horde, and felling dragons all with a smile on her face. While she ultimately threw her banners aside to cooperate with Kolaghan's brood, her legacy is still unforgotten, with a clan of transgender warriors still battling in her honor today.
In her ascension to the top of her side of the bracket, she has slain many a challenging foe, such as: Marit Lage, the eldritch horror trapped beneath the ice of Dominaria, cutthroat queen of Fiora and schemer beyond equal, and Liliana, the demon-pact necromancer who once defined what it meant to be a Magic Girlboss.
On the right side, we have the gorgon-planeswalker assassin turned Golgari queen, Vraska! In her work as an assassin, she held one creed: "A person should die the death they deserve." Through her dramatic, ironic assassinations which called back to the way the victims lived their lives, she amassed a following by which she dispensed her own version of justice across the Ravnican Undercity. When she was forced out of the shadows by Jace, she responded by inciting revolution within the Golgari, rallying her followers to allow her ascension to the throne. On Ixalan, she became a pirate captain, sailing to find a highly sought-after treasure and ultimately succeeding in her mission. At this point she also fell in love with Jace, beginning Magic's most iconic Girlboss/Failguy relationship. As of the end of War of the Spark, Vraska stood as undisputed queen of the Golgari Swarm, with most who would stand as obstacles to her power eliminated.
Vraska, too, has faced many a foe. These include Beckett Brass, the admiral of a vast coalition of pirate crews, Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar, whose demonic dishes were to die for, Emrakul, whose interplanar influence and destruction knows only the bounds of Innistrad's ancient moon, and Teysa Karlov, a fellow guild-leader who somehow combines banking and priesthood while making it look sexy.
Beginning on Monday, May 15th at 12:00 PM EST, witness the conclusion of a story arc that honestly is better than anything MTG has actually had in the past half-decade. Will the Mardu Khan reign supreme, or will the Golgari queen cut her way to the top? That is for all of you to decide.

Adventures in Writing DC Fanfictions: Writing My Own Batman.
Tumblr media
One of the things I did with my Batman story is make my main character have a physical disability (Cerebral Palsy.) and go from there. Why? Because it makes his fights all the more creative. Sure, it's a milder form of Cerebral Palsy, but it still makes me think in ways to make this Batman unique from other depictions.
He has the toolkit from Bruce, he has all the gadgets and most of the skills, but he has that constant physical weakness. He shouldn't have been Robin or anywhere NEAR the Cowl but here he is.
There's a lot of self doubt and even self hatred with this Batman. The idea of Batman working alone is almost an indictment on how Bruce still thinks he should've worked alone. In this case my Batman struggles with what he learned from Bruce, his father.
Having him with his disability makes how he takes down the criminals in Gotham even more interesting because he knows he can't brute force his way through every encounter, so what did I do?
Took a little inspiration from an old radio program called 'The Shadow'. Where the main character uses different tactics like throwing his voice or some other misdirection to throw his foes into sheer fear.
But then there's the idea from Overly Sarcastic Productions where Red said, "If you can't imagine your Batman comforting a child, then you just wrote the Punisher in a funny hat."
Now, initially, I made my Batman a very angry, enraged boy lashing out because he lost someone very important. But there's moments of genuine sincerity and kindness from him that come out.
There’s also a sense that this isn’t voluntary and my Batman sees the cowl as his responsibility to uphold.
His Gotham City is a mix between the real and the gothic horrors. The Rogues he fights are very real depictions of broken people.
But then there’s the old Arkham Asylum where horrifying things happened there and manifested it as a ‘Bat Demon’.
Or the pseudo eldritch Poison Ivy who was inspired by Bramble: The Mountain King and The Green Knight.
But then there’s Mr. Freeze and Calendar Girl who are both broken by the systems that they were in. Or a Scarecrow that wields his Fear Toxins like a stage effect because he’s a musician.
My Batman faces these people in different ways to his father, Bruce. He sees them as people that were broken or used to further some goal or motive beyond their control.

Head on his shoulder, Guinaifen let out a content hum as she'd scroll through endless of updates on her social medias, the buzzing life of the streets around them fading on occupied focus. All it took was a feed, the comfort of her lover and a soft drink in hand to bask in the artificial warmth of the sun above them. Quick scrolling, occasionally showing him hilarious pictures, and then... a pause.
Who was that ?
Finger scrolled back up, clicking on a video that would display a woman with purple hair and a great set of legs. Wow. Guinaifen needed both hands for this, fingers zooming in on the female figure. It was a news report, something that went straight past the performer's head as she paused on an image shown of her full figure, sword in hand.
"W o w, look at this woman -" Not just any woman, but a woman the trailblazer might find it in him to recognize as she exceeded every bit of reputation tied to her name (destiny's slave, Kafka) would be held up before the two of them, a nudge to his side. "Her legs are awesome ; I'd love to get my hands on that outfit ! Do you think she's like a celebrity or something ? She looks awesome... and kinda hot, but I think that's the outfit's fault ... Hm..."
There'd be a glance down at her own legs. "Mine might be a too long for that outfit though - What do you think, babe?"
Caelus's own hands were no better. A rhythmic, constant flow of the thumbs repeatedly raining perturbation upon his foes, and the gallant strides required to avoid their lethal, eldritch brand of powers on the other. Comfort like this genuinely feels rare, how even in open space they're basically treating it like their own house. Once again their 'infamy' has made them a common sight, either in mischief, testing new frontiers or just this.
From the bottom of his heart, the Trailblazer knew he could get use to this.
There's a moment of tension from her figure, and from that, a natural assumption that her attention might've been snagged as a volatile, original plan may be in the makings. "Mm? Just what did you--" Eyes drifting to the side, for a moment the delinquent's heart found itself stunned to a pause, his phone nearly dropping as the velvet like confidence of quite the infamous face found itself parked on Guinaifen's phone.
Tumblr media
Exactly as he can remember or imagine, the way how life itself is played to her silk, the devilish glow underneath those eyelashes as the entirety of her form was utterly recognizable to him. Should he tell her? "Dude, that's--" He begins, that nudge succeeding in jostling out any thought that would come. Only for this moment to heighten it's prominence by the opinionated addition that, due to knowing these two worlds, watching them converge made his jaw hang in utter speechlessness.
Her legs are awesome---
SHE looks awesome.... and kinda hot.
Caelus could not refute that statement. All the same, his heart ping ponged within his ribcage as this obscure combination of amusement, shock, stunned, how the hell was he supposed to feel about this?! In the gleaming eye of his imagination, that image briefly comes to life, Kafka's calculating eyes practically peering up towards them as if the epitome of innocence. As if she was wholly conscious of the chaos woven by her hands.
...Did that goddamn image of her just wink at him!? He swears it did at this moment!
"You've-- legs." Of course she has legs, Caelus. The image of those form fitting tights would be imposed upon the mind, drifting from the image of Kafka's natural confidence to his Firekiss, except rather than her sunny disposition, here she was wearing that same confidence as the Stellaron Hunter in question! It led to his face growing warm, this image of Guinaifen holding those razor edges, donning an outfit similar to Kafka's as within moments, his eyes sailed down to the glory of those lovely and strong legs of her's.
For an instant that phone was dropped, impulse overtaking him as he press a hand onto her thigh, drifting it over the current fabric and the warm shape of that lovely curve, prompting him to give it the most appreciative of squeezes. Somehow, his body was host to a spiritual form of autopilot as he pictures a different fabric adorning them. A low hum of confirmation escapes as he peers back up to her.
"We'd find the length if you like-- That, considering how beautiful your legs are?"
.....
"Firekiss, I'd stay buried between them for the whole day if I saw that."
Caelus what.

How to Play a Force User in 5e?
One aspect of character building for 5e I enjoy is trying to replicate character archetypes that aren't obviously represented by a single (sub-)class into 5e. And Tulok the Barbrarian hasn't helped matters (check out his channel, it's fun).
Anyway, one of my favorite things is Star Wars and naturally I love Force users, and 5e offers a handful of combinations that work really well for it.
So here are some! Note that with most of them the Telekinetic feat is recommended, and the Telepathic feat also often works well.
Intelligence: Psi Warrior Fighter + Wizard
This one is basically ready-made. You get psionic abilities and you unlock really fun stuff as you level. However, since the Psi Warrior uses Intelligence for their features, that means you'll have an easy time multiclassing into wizard!
Both War Magic and Bladesinging are excellent additions. The former is more generic and synergizes well even with medium or heavy armor, while the latter is generally more powerful, but is often restricted lore-wise and pigeonholes you into wearing light armor only. It also works "best" with Psi Warrior if you take less than six levels in wizard, because at that point Bladesinging gives you Extra Attack and that obviously doesn't work with a fighter's Extra Attack (though you'd still gain the ability to use cantrips within your Attack action).
In general this build is bulky and uses magic for versatility, making an excellent frontline warrior. Also if your GM ain't no fan of the psionic subclasses, then Eldritch Knight is also fine.
Intelligence: Bladesinging Wizard + Samurai Fighter
Yes, another fighter + wizard combo, but one with a different flair. This would really lean into Bladesinging and use Samurai Fighter for its excellent Fighting Spirit feature at 3rd level (and Action Surge at 2nd). With Fighting Spirit you can give yourself advantage on attack rolls and gain temporary hit points, very appropriate in the "letting the Force guide you" sense. After that this build would focus itself entirely on wizard levels. Still, the 7th level Samurai feature Elegant Courtier is excellent, and if you only want to take four or five levels in wizard, or don't a redudant Extra Attack, snatch that up, too.
The levels in Samurai enhace the face archetype that a Jedi as intergalatic peacekeepers embody excellently.
This build is likely squishier than the prior one, but still not that squishy. It really depends on the level mix. Also note that Elegant Courtier works based on Wisdom, so that segues into...
Wisdom: Fey Wanderer Ranger + Samurai Fighter
The Fey Wanderer is the best ranger subclass to get the feel of a Force user for sure. Since it heavily focuses on charming foes and resisting charms yourself, it sells the stalwart moral stance of a Jedi and the classic Jedi mind trick quite well. Otherworldly Glamour makes you an excellent party face, and Wisdom feels the most intuitive among the three mental ability scores for a Jedi to prioritize.
For Samurai, just see the section I wrote for the prior entry, it's just really, really good, and those first three fighter levels are just a wonderful addition to any build that can afford them.
This build is also the best way to emulate a Jedi who is very connected to nature, like Kanan Jarrus or Ezra Bridger, since druid has too specific a fantasy to work with that.
Wisdom: Peace/War Cleric + Fey Wanderer Ranger/Samurai Fighter
The cleric also provides an excellent foundation for a Jedi character, and the War Domain and the Peace Domain especially. Both really fit the ideals of Jedi, the former obviously more of a Clone Wars-era Jedi general (or a Sith), while the latter fits the High Republic-era or the old Expanded Universe restored Order really well. Special shoutouts to War's Channel Divinity: Guided Strike and Peace's Implement of Peace features, those really feel appropriate.
Cleric spells work really nicely as Force abilities, and thus work as a great foundation. Now you can easily add either the Fey Wanderer or the Samurai on top of that to either go deeper into the role of a skilled negotiator or a mighty warrior, all while having a fairly easy time with multiclassing.
Charisma: Aberrant Mind/Divine Soul Socerer + Paladin
The sorcerer represents nicely the inherent nature of Force-sensitivity and both the Aberrant Mind and the Divine Soul fulfill the aspects of mental prowess and a special destiny respectively.
The paladin levels meanwhile enhance your melee capabilities, as well as your spellcasting and healing. Virtually any oath works here. Ancients provides a bit of Kanan Jarrus/Ezra Bridger/Bendu vibes, Conquest and Oathbreaker are very Sith, and the others all work for Jedi in general.
Ingnite your lightsaber with your smites, and you'll have a good time. Plus, as a Charisma-based build, you'll make an excellent face, of course.
Charisma: Great Old One Warlock + Paladin (or maybe Bard?)
We've reached the final one! The obligatory warlock-paladin multiclass. A wonderful combination. Now I'm deliberately excluding the Hexblade due to flavor, but the Great Old One is a wonderful patron for a wannabe Jedi to have. For you that patron are, basically, Medichlorians. You are more attune to them than other people (or so you think?), and thus you gain special psychic powers associated with them.
For the paladin aspect, s. the prior build. All of that also applies here.
Addendum: Even bard might be a nice option to add to the Great Old One. Bardic Inspiration can easily be interpreted as using the Force to subtly move or stabilize your allies during an Athletics or Acrobatics check, or as a minor Jedi mind trick in social situations. College of Valor and College of Swords are very good choices for this multiclass build to enhance your melee capabilities.
Addendum: On Monks
I did consider whether monk would work, maybe with the Fey Wanderer Ranger it'd be okay, and then I'd probably go with Way of Mercy but monk is too weird of a class to work well... But the 2024 rules revision monk might be just the trick for that! We'll see what that looks like. In terms of how short rest-reliant monks are, a warlock-monk build would make sense, but since the Playtest 5 warlock was thoroughly rejected, Wisdom-based warlocks will never happen in this game (until we get a proper 6th edition?)...
