time lapse of a banded sphinx moth caterpillar (Eumorpha fasciatus) devouring a water primrose leaf
(Florida, 9/18/22)
E. fasciatus caterpillars are heavily polymorphic and come in several different color morphs- those stripy rainbow ones are from the same population as the green one.
another neat thing about these guys is that most caterpillars drown easily, but since water primrose (Ludwigia) usually grows in standing water, E. fasciatus caterpillars have a propensity for swimming and are often seen wriggling their way through lakes when they need to come ashore to pupate.
people talking abt the eumorpha fasciatus hornworm like IF THATS A HORNWORM THEN WHERES HER HORN .. CHECKMATE………….. her horn is small but shes still a hornworm be fucking nice.
Hope you're doing ok and having a great start of year. Today I bring you what I think is a moth. But could you identify this one please! The photo is from Veracruz, Mexico.
Also, here you go, a beautiful Sphinx I found outside.
Hope you're doing ok and meeting new friendly bugs!
Hello! They're both sphinx moths, actually. The first looks like a giant sphinx, Cocytius antaeus, and the second one is a banded sphinx, Eumorpha fasciatus. Both extremely beautiful! Thank you for sharing :)
Was absolutely floored by this huge, gorgeous Banded Sphinx moth (Eumorpha fasciatus) today. I feel like they're so, so rare to see, I NEVER spot them. It was an honor to get to watch this very cool friend for a while.
Also I had to lay down in a wet ant bed and got bitten all over for these photos, so please, enjoy.
Sorry I haven’t posted much lately. Grad school is busy! I hope you accept this gorgeous male Eumorpha fasciatus as consolation. This moth is sometimes known as the Banded Sphinx or Lesser Vine Sphinx. I think it should be called the “hmm it’s kinda boring OH LOOK AT THE HINDWINGS Sphinx” but perhaps that’s too long of a name? Thoughts?
