THINGS I WOULD FIX / ADD TO ENCANTO (2021)

note: you're free to dis/agree with me. these r just my thoughts bc im unsatisfied with the film even tho i already claim it as one of my top favorites

ANTONIO COMFORTS MIRABEL

After he had called to Mirabel saying he needed help coming up to his room and the support Mirabel offered to her cousin, Antonio would most likely have talked more about his nervousness and excitement about receiving his gift.

Maybe it would happen on the same night. I have two options in mind:

The one where Antonio talks about his feelings being overwhelmed with greatness and having a heart-to-heart talk with his family during the party (after all, the night was about him). Then maybe he would notice Mirabel wasn't present. He would run after her and witness her sulking and they both discover the cracks all over the house. So he helps her tell Abuela about it. When they come back, Abuela would most likely tell Antonio to enjoy the night.

The other option is where everyone is fast asleep except Mirabel. When she climbs up to the roof to see the candle, the same Toucan flies to her head, only to look down and see that Antonio was following her, too. Then they go on the adventure together, showcasing that they are the closest cousins among the family.

Then Mirabel wouldn't have gone through a tough time to get up to Bruno's room (even though I liked how Rosa voiced it well!) and there would've been more danger aside from the sudden overflooding sand (in a room that ACTUALLY had a handle inside and out so really NO tension there..).

Plus this would make a lot more sense than just casting Antonio away after he got his powers. It was as if brushed under the rug after he got it and then we saw him again when the rats told him about Bruno and Mirabel meeting. I was so confused why Antonio was acting casual about it especially since it's literally his first time seeing his uncle after ten years! He's a kid! The same with Bruno, though. He would've had the heart to have a short moment to hug his nephew.

LEAVE MORE HINTS ABOUT ENVY AND DISGUST BETWEEN ISABELA AND MIRABEL

I didn't understand why the vision had been to work things between Isabela and Mirabel. We were barely given time to digest what happened. Besides, it wasn't only Isabela affected that night.

Sure, there were small hints of sisterly rivalry between them but those aren't really serious ones the audience would read into:

Slapping Isabela's hair on Mirabel's face

Isabela growing irritable whenever Mirabel ends up bumping into her

Isabela saying I hate you when Mirabel ended up ruining the engagement night

Oh and let's not forget that on Mirabel's introduction to the Madrigal family, she had introduced Luisa as the perfect golden child with NO SIGN OF DISGUST WHATSOEVER. In fact she seemed to be idolizing her in support of that, that Luisa is the perfect child of the family. It was only when the song ended that Isabela shut that down. And you're telling me, that's jealousy that needs to be resolved to save...casita?

The engagement night was supposedly a huge thing for Isabela. Before we find out she wasn't actually all into the idea of marrying the guy, the only sign that had her flustered was when more flowers popped on her hair with one stray daisy.

This could've been a MOMENT where she and Mirabel had the biggest fight they had. Then that would've been where Isabela reveals she doesn't even want the marriage. Then she would storm into her room and tell Mirabel to leave her alone. This would've created more depth on her character and chemistry with Mirabel. Then the vision would make sense.

But honestly, the vision, I'm hoping it was really Abuela that Mirabel had to immediately confront.

ENGAGEMENT NIGHT FIASCO SHOULD'VE BEEN THE CLIMAX

Climax in a way that the family confronts Mirabel. They would probably almost scare her into going away before the magic disappears. Then Mirabel would find the scurrying rats to the portrait. Much richer than simply random ramblings from the members coming back to their own rooms, if you ask me.

Where, Abuela: You're the reason why Casita is falling apart!

Mirabel: But I wasn't-

Mother: Mama-

Abuela: No, I have had it! Mirabel, I have told you countless times to step aside for this family and instead you ruin your sister's engagement! A chance at happiness!

Mirabel: Abuela, it wasn't on purpose! I was looking for Bruno and his vision because I want to help the family.

Abuela: Stop! Enough! Casita, lock Mirabel in her room for the rest of the night!

Family would be: Abuela you've gone too far! She's just a kid! What if it was Antonio in Bruno's vision, would you have done the same! Or do you only treat the ungifted that badly?

Abuela: Antonio, I-

Antonio: Mirabel shouldn't be locked up!

...well, just a thought. Or something along the lines the same as this impact yeah.

MORE DIFFICULTY ACCESSING BRUNO'S ROOM

Casita didn't do a good job on dragging Mirabel out from the danger. Since Casita knows they don't have power over the inside of it and knows how 'dangerous' it is inside, they would have barricaded that. They would have prevented Mirabel with their floors. What happened to the floors?? Casita had a long chance of protecting Mirabel like Abuela had ordered. Then Mirabel would have managed to convince Casita and then maybe Casita would've brought something to help her on the journey.

MORE CONVERSATION BETWEEN MOTHER AND MIRABEL

Aside from when the mother had a short heart-to-heart talk with Mirabel, and the subtle mother protecting Mirabel from her mother—there wasn't enough depth and chemistry.

The mother should've gone to Mirabel the second dinner was ruined. She would've asked Mirabel how she found out about the vision. She would've expounded more on who Bruno really is, considering she's his brother / part of the triplets. She would more likely have added more to what Dolores told about Bruno being misunderstood.

Also, what's with the Abuela finding Mirabel in the end? She's older than her mother. She wouldn't have had the strength to walk that far. And the mother should've been the first to have found her daughter before she alerts Abuela. Or or

When mother finds Mirabel, she tells Mirabel about the history of Abuela finding Casita in the exact spot. Then they would march back to Casita to find a silent solemn Abuela who wouldn't know what to say and how to tell stuff to her granddaughter.

MORE EMPHASIS ON DOLORES' LOVE FOR MARIANO

I COMPLETELY MISSED THAT ON THE FIRST TIME WATCHING THE FILM—THAT IT WAS DOLORES WHO WANTED MARIANO.

There should've been at least one scene where she dropped hints about the poetry, "It's not like I listen to Mariano recite his poetries aloud for Isabela. I'm fine. I'm fine. I'm fine." (breathes) "Anyway! Yes, he writes poetry and (insert stuff here)."

SMOOTHER TRANSITION OF ISABELA DISCOVERING SHE COULD CREATE SOMETHING BEYOND FLOWERS

Instead through an abrupt action of amazement, she could've taken a breathing to say, "I made this? This has never happened before."

Then Mirabel would be all like, "A cactus?"

"I never thought I could make anything but flowers."

Just, more exploration with the cactus details and genuine being in awe at the sight because it's not something you could easily burst into a song about.

TIMELINE

The entire movie happened in a span of two days. It happened too fast. Way too fast. Especially since after the night Antonio had his powers, he wasn't given much attention afterwards. He should've been given more spotlight the next day, immediate pressure so there's emphasis on the pressure the Abuela has on each person. (Also why was she not as strict with Dolores, Pepa, and Camilo as much with Luisa and Isabela, then?)

Isabela's engagement night should've happened in a week, at least. Give Antonio more time to breathe with his newly gained powers. Plus, more time for conversations between family members.

BRUNO WITH FAMILY RELATIONSHIP

He REALLY should have attempted to hug Antonio the moment he saw him but ended up only patting him on the head.

In the part where he and Mirabel were hiding behind pots, they could've easily inserted Camilo (since he was searching for Mirabel? at the time). Maybe he would suddenly be shocked, cover his mouth, and point, "We're not supposed to talk about Bruno-"

Then Bruno be like, "I like how you painted me to be some kind of legend." Then pretend to be one of his co-personalities he invented behind the walls.

Then Camilo looks at Mirabel and then Mirabel explains what she had to do and then have Camilo help her by disguising first as Mariano maybe. Knocking on Isabela's door to propose, but then turn back to his normal form because Isabela points out how fast he managed to heal his recently punched nose. Then Mirabel sneaks in between them to do her thing.

Then Camilo has an awkward moment with Bruno. Bruno scratching the back of his head, "You did a really great job. Your gift."

"Thanks." Then Camilo would probably ask some sort of controversial question that would lead Bruno to be like, "Wait, what?"

MORE STREAMLINED AND JUSTIFIED APOLOGY OF ABUELA TO FAMILY

The text says it all. Not sure what I can suggest for this bit, though.

MORE DETAIL ON BRUNO'S EXTENDED VISION

I read somewhere that the butterfly was in reference to this novel? I forgot the title but still, the vision shouldve provided MORE context? Aside from the vision not being in order—and should've shown that the hug was separate from talking to Isabela.

MORE RAW REACTION TO BRUNO FINALLY RETURNING HOME AFTER TEN YEARS

The man disappeared for TEN YEARS, people. While the creators chose to act casually about it to establish they simply missed the man, surely he deserved a better welcome on his part, especially after all the prejudice he had received from his inherited gift of vision.

Days Without Bruno, part two

This one is pretty long, just warning you

Three weeks had already passed since her thirteenth birthday, three years had already passed.

The last three years did not go how she wanted it to go to say the least, but she was able to go for one last daily walk with Luisa yesterday, she didn’t have to go on those walks but she always loved to, it was a nice walk.

But today was different, she would be alone for these walks from now on, after her yesterday’s walk Abuela decided Luisa had better things to do than take a child for walks.

She was walking a new trail today.

All alone, it was peaceful, the birds were chirping and every once in a while a capybara crossed her path.

Out here she could think about things other than her family, she loved them with all her heart of course she did but sometimes they were just to much.

So she goes for walks, she’s usually gone for hours but she wouldn’t be out that long this time, it was close to sunset and she hadn’t told anyone that she had gone, she didn’t want to bother any of them, they were tired after doing their duties to the community so she just left

As she walked the birds slowly became quiet, but she didn’t think much of it, why would she? Nothing ever happened in the Encanto, it was a paradise, nothing could happen under the miracle, Pedro’s miracle, she admired her Abuelo quite a bit she hoped to be like him, or at least that the people in town told her about him.

It was very quiet as she neared the viewpoint, it had never been this quiet, no birds, no animals, nothing but her own footsteps and breathing.

Her thoughts wandered to Bruno, like they always did when it was quiet, he would probably go on walks with her if he was still here

Her thoughts were disturbed by someone-or something-crashing through the undergrowth, her first instinct was to run so she ran as fast as she could up the trail to the viewpoint but whatever was in the bushes followed her.

“Go away!” She yelled and threw a rock which was met with a quiet “ouch!”

She looked back as she ran, she hit someone, someone was chasing her!

She tripped on a root and scrapped her chin on a sharp stone.

A young girl came out of the jungle, she was covered in dirt and her dress had obviously been snagged by bushes and sticks

Neomi didn’t say anything, she just stared at this newcomer

“I…I need help..” this stranger panted

A small drop of blood fell onto the dress Neomi was wearing

“What’s your name?” Neomi asked, getting up and wiping the dirt off her dress, she was still breathing heavily from the scare and running

There hadn’t been new people in the Encanto for a very long time, the last person who had come into this place was Agustin, the mountains had let someone new in. Was she alone? Did she have a family with her? If she did have a family, what could she do? They could be further into the forest or they could be hurt

“I’m Victoria..my brother….he’s hurt, really bad I don’t know what to do” Victoria was starting to cry

Now that Neomi looked at her more she had been crying a lot, and she did have a family with her or at least a brother “where is he?” She asked “we need to get him to my Tia”

Victoria nodded “he’s right over here, thank you so much for helping us”

Neomi followed her as she led the way, after only a few steps she could smell a horrible, sickening smell “Victoria, how long have you guys been out here?” She asked

“A few days..” She sighed

Neomi walked faster until she found a boy, laying in a small clearing with a deep cut on his leg, it was a horrible color, a mixture between grey and green the smell was horrible, it made her gag, as she neared the boy she could see he wasn’t moving, barely breathing even

Oh my god, he’s going to die! She thought, starting to panic

“He can’t walk” Victoria said and kneeled down next to him “and our parents…aren’t here to help us..” the thought of them only made her cry harder

“Okay..we’ll have to help him then” she grabbed one of his arms and put it over her shoulder, Victoria did the same.

And together they slowly brought him off of the mountain, it took an extra hour with the weight of the boy but just before it was completely dark they made it off the mountain.

“Julieta!” She started to yell when they got closer to Casita “Julieta someone is hurt!” She yelled again

The doors flew open, Julieta rushed over with Agustin and Alonso, her best friend since they were kids, he was only a year older than her and she was relieved to see him

“Oh Dios mío what happened?!” Julieta asked when she saw the boy

Victoria answered “he cut his leg on a rock…I didn’t know what to do..” she sighed when Agustin came and took him from them

“Don’t worry, he’s in good hands, please come in, have some food. Tell me everything” Julieta brought Victoria into Casita but Neomi didn’t follow, she wanted to talk to Alonso, she hadn’t seen him much since her birthday

“Are you okay?” Alonso asked and hugged her, he gave the best hugs, he always knew when she needed one too

“I’m okay, just got a little cut on my chin” she hugged him back and sighed, she felt safe in his arms, like all her other problems would just disappear

“Are you sure? You seem really upset” he stroked her hair, another thing he did when she was upset.

She buried her face in his shoulder as she started crying, there was so much she hadn’t told him about her actual feelings, about how she blamed herself for Bruno leaving, there was so much that almost no one knew

“Hey it’s okay, Neomi it’s okay, I’m here, I’ll always be here for you, even if you don’t want me to be I’ll be here” he hugged her a little tighter but not much

“Can I just stay at your house tonight?” She mumbled, she always felt alone at Casita

Alonso nodded “my mom will be happy to have you over” he took her away from Casita, a usually warm and welcoming place to everyone who needs help, usually, but sometimes it seemed dark and cold, scary even, especially after there was a fight.

Neomi and Alonso walked in silence as he took her to his house, she didn’t know what to talk about, she could tell him about all her feelings about Bruno or about the fact she doesn’t eat as much as she should or maybe stuff about herself, her feelings, her fears, her worries, her guilt, the hate she feels towards herself.

“Neomi are you sure you’re okay?” Alonso asked, he glanced at her as they walked, he looked very concerned “you don’t have to tell me what’s bothering you but just don’t tell me everything is fine”

She couldn’t bring herself speak, so she just looked at the ground

He’s gonna hate me if I don’t tell him isn’t he?

She glanced at Alonso and finally found the courage to speak “I think my papa left because of me…” her voice was barely more than a whisper but it felt good to say it, she had kept this in for years, her family thought she was done blaming herself.

Alonso didn’t say anything for a few seconds “he didn’t leave because of you, he left because he’s bad dad! You have to stop thinking about him, you have Agustin and Julieta. They’re better parents than Bruno could ever be” it turned it he to had a dislike of Bruno.

“But he was good before he left..” she said, she missed him but maybe Alonso had a point

“Neomi he left you and your brother, if he cared he would’ve stayed, or at least tell you where he went” he opened the door to his house and Neomi walked in with him right behind her, ending the conversation

“Hola mamá” he greeted his mom when he was inside “Neomi is going to stay the night if that’s okay”

Señora Castro smiled and nodded “of course, she’s always welcome here” she was a kind lady, so welcoming and understanding.

“You know you’re like a daughter to me” she walked over and kissed Neomi’s forehead

Ana Castro had lost her daughter a few years ago, she was Neomi’s age when she died, a tragic accident. The poor girl had been playing with Alonso by the river when she fell in, that part of the river does have some pretty dangerous currents that could wash away anyone who wasn’t careful.

“Thank you señora” she gave Ana a hug, which Ana returned, she gave hugs like Alonso.

Neomi was supposed to be asleep in the guest bedroom that night but her thoughts kept wandering back to Victoria.

Her long brown hair, her blue eyes, her eyes were dark blue, she had never seen eyes like that before, she couldn’t have been much older than Neomi maybe a year or two older judging by her height.

She would have to talk to her in the morning, the odds are that she’ll be at Casita until they found her and her brother a place to stay, which probably wouldn’t take long, there were lots of couples in the Encanto who wanted children but couldn’t have them.

She would definitely find a way to talk to her again, she would leave early in the morning and talk to her, ask her how she got here, if she had any other family outside of the Encanto, or maybe if she might have some in the Encanto, that had only happened once, with someone named Hernando, he had an older brother here when he and his dad arrived, she was told it was a happy reunion…she also heard that he was one of Bruno’s friends so she avoids him whenever she sees him around.

“Hmm Victoria..Victoria…that’s a pretty name” she mumbled to herself as she fell asleep.

Alonso was standing outside the guest bedroom with two cups of hot chocolate, he was about to come into the room and announce it was time for their usual sleepover but he heard her talking to herself so he decided to listen.

He gripped the mugs tighter, she was talking about that new girl.

Why her?! What’s so special about her?!

He tapped his foot a few times, why does he even care?

Why should he care?

It’s not like he likes Neomi, he couldn’t.

But still he felt this over whelming jealousy. Could this new girl really take her away from him? She was his friend not hers, he wouldn’t let her take Neomi from, him he cared about her to much to let that happen, so he wouldn’t let it happen, he would ask Alma to keep distance between Neomi and the new girl, easy enough.

He walked away from the door, yeah it’ll be easy enough.
