“I wanna show you something.”
Bruno gently took your hand and pulled you up the staircases in his room. All of them. After a few months of dating and having become a social outcast in town, you grew weird and a little more distant, sometimes going a full day without letting go of Bruno’s hand. And he was very sweet; squeezing your hand and making sure you were okay.
There were days where you would blankly stare at the walls and didn't eat a thing. You had a small breakdown in the bathtub once where Bruno found you, soaked and wrinkled from hours in the water. "y/n?" You hadn't answered him, simply took his hand and held it to your wet cheek. He'd climbed into the bathtub with you, cleaning your back and braiding your hair until you felt calm enough to get out again. You tried to feel Bruno near as much as possible. He was your anchor - he was your haven through this all.
You climbed the stairs and for the first time in your life, you saw the opening to Bruno’s cave. “Are we going in there?” you asked him but he shook his head. To the side, there was a small hole in the ceiling, the evening wind blowing through it. You followed Bruno as he grabbed some stones and hoisted himself up on the roof. “I am actually – kind of sorry, like I always wanted to eh, to show you this place. It’s where I went when things got a little bit too much for me.”
On the roof there were several pillows and matrasses, as the view was of a million stars in the sky. You mouthed a little ‘wow’ as you sat down. The whole floor was just a soft pillow to lie down in and gaze up to the sky. “What if it rains?” You ask as you take off your sandals and sit down cross-legged on the floor. Bruno sits down behind you, wrapping his hands around your waist and resting his chin on your shoulder. “Casita always puts a little glass roof over it whenever Pepa has had a bad day. That way, it still feels like you’re outside in the rain without actually getting wet.”
You chuckled. “The stars are beautiful tonight.”
“They are,” he answered after which he pointed to the sky. You followed his finger with your eyes. “Those two,” he said, “the ones that don’t shine so bright.”
You did indeed see two little stars, side by side, that were very dim and sad compared to all the other brilliant crystals shining down on you. “That’s us,” he whispered. You laughed and let your back rest against his chest. “We are pretty pathetic compared to the rest of this family.” He pressed a kiss against your neck and you let the feeling tingle through your body. “Yeah,” he chuckled as he tickled you in your side, “we’re so sad.”
You laughed and tickled him back and for a moment; you were teenagers again – tickling and laughing and playing as you rolled over the roof, throwing one pillow after the next. One landed in his face and he pretended to get knocked out. When you rushed to him to check if he was okay, he grabbed you tight and flung you around. You felt carelessly happy again, maybe the first time in months. “My name is Hernando,” he said, pitching his voice lower than it actually was. You rolled over with laughter from this persona. He raised his arms all creepily as the hood concealed his face. “I am not afraid of you. I’m not afraid of anything!”
You put your face behind your shawl, looking like a mighty sorcerer, or something and laughed like an evil witch. “And my name is Nina, I’m a witch and I’m not afraid of the fearless Hernando!”
Then he attacked you, pushing you down to the ground as he pretended to eat you. You both laughed so hard, your stomach physically hurt. He had pinned you to the ground though. He had won the game. After you had laughed your laughs, Bruno also realized he had pinned you. You took his neck and pulled him nearer for a kiss. He wasn’t pulling away, instead, he let his body melt over yours, letting his fingers run through your hair as he kissed little kisses on your mouth and your eyes and your neck and – wow.
He eventually raised his arms and took off his poncho with a little struggle. You lay a hand on his leg. “What are you doing?” You asked as he also unbuttoned his shirt with fidgeting hands. He stopped with what he’s doing and looks at you questioningly. “I just – I thought that-”
“But are you sure?” You ask him. He’s expressed multiple times that he doesn’t need it. That he’s fine without all of that in our relationship. You feel your ears turning red. He nods softly. “I feel like – I don’t know. I want you to see me. Without boundaries or something.” He sniffed. “I’m just eh… I’m not really sure what I’m supposed to do.”
He strokes your face and you stroke his after which you climb out from under him and take the position he had over you. His giant eyes watch you intently as you take off your dress. You both feel it, the electricity in the stars and between you. You lean forward and kiss him like he kissed you, on his eyes, his mouth – you bit his ear slightly. You have no idea what you’re doing either, but after lots of fumbling and giggles, you unbuckle his belt and help him pull down his pants. “You’re so pretty,” you whisper, the words making him whine as he fixed his eyes on everything you were doing. You knew he loved those little compliments, had him eating right out of your palm.
“y/n,“ he almost whined, rutting up against you as your fingers trailed along the waist band of his underpants. His fingers ghosted over yours, a testing press that made you gasp. “So wet,“ he said mostly to himself. You helped him tug down the last scraps of clothing and took off yours as he sat upright, instantly kissing you again once you were near. You sat on his lap, letting your fingers curl through his hair as he nudged his leg up against your now bare cunt as you rocked against him.
“Bruno“ you said breathlessly, pulling away and holding his face in your hands “need you. Need you right now.“
That breathy whimper left his lips again and it seemed to urge him forward. He turned you over with far too much care but you’d expect nothing less from him, before hoisting you up on a square-like couch in the corner. You shivered slightly, the cool untouched fabric of the pillows a stark contrast to the warmth of his lap.
His lips were on you again, but only briefly.
“Can I taste you? “ he asked, eyes wide and practically pleading. You almost moaned just at the idea, nodding perhaps a little too enthusiastically at his request.
“Yes. Yes Bruno please…” He pressed another kiss to your lips before dropping onto his knees, never letting his hands leave you. He pulled you to the edge of the couch and carefully pushed your legs apart.
His eyes didn’t leave you once as he pressed soft, wet kisses to your thighs. You clenched around nothing just at the sight. This man would be the death of you. Your breath hitched in your throat as he drew closer, his own hot breath fanning over you and making you shiver again. His fingers carefully spread you apart, his nose brushing against your clit. Your head fell back with a soft whine.
“Bruno…“ he was still watching you intently as he licked a slow stripe between your folds, eliciting the most beautiful sounds from your mouth.
“So good,” he mumbled against you, confidence seemingly drowning him as he began to devour you as if you were his final meal. He’d never done this before, you’d never felt this before. But it was heavenly. You were now quite certain that to please you, he’d quite happily give you orgasm after orgasm without even bothering about himself. He’d go at it for hours, making you come over and over until you physically couldn’t take it anymore.
“Fuck- Bruno-” you gasped, hands sliding into his hair and tugging on his curls.
When he slowly slid a finger into you, you moaned so loud they probably heard you two floors down, even more so when a second quickly followed. You quickly slammed one hand against your own lips. His mouth was still preoccupied with your clit, and the mix of his tongue and his thick fingers curling up inside of you was too much. You could never get anything going with your own fingers, but his were magic. “Mi amore,” you whined. “So close.”
He curled his fingers again, hitting the perfect spot that was your undoing and barely a minute later you were coming. Hard. You clenched your thighs around his head, moans and sighs loudly falling from your throat. Bruno continued to lap at you gently, helping to ride you though it and make sure every single second lasted as long as possible.
“¿Estás bien?”
You gave a small laugh and nodded. You ran a hand over his hair and then nudged your fingers under his chin and scratchy beard, urging him to stand again. He stood up from the floor and pulled you along. He kissed you, making you moan into his mouth as you tasted yourself on his lips.
“Shower?“ He asked as you lay your forehead on his shoulder, his small figure perfect for the gesture. “Yeah,” you breathed, your body still tingling with sensation. This was perfect. He was perfect.
Bruno grabbed a big blanket from the floor and tried to lift you into his arms, failing miserably. “Come here,” you said as you offered him a place under the blanket with you. He put one arm over your shoulder and held the other side of the blanket with his free hand.
This way, you both tiptoed to the bathroom with a million whispered I love you’s on the way.

Bruno was sweating bullets, tugging at the collar of his brown shirt as he descended the steps from his tower. It was almost dinner time for the Madrigals, and he was about to announce his absence from the daily family event.
He had only recently rejoined his family after years of isolation, years of sitting in the walls of La Casita watching his sisters raise their children and his mother growing older. At last, he was finally welcomed back and as he entered the dining room, he saw a plate with his name on it already set in front of his seat.
Dolores was already seated, laughing as she watched Camilo shifting his physical form between himself and Alma for her amusement. Julieta and Mirabel were running frantically between the kitchen and the dining room, bringing with them a new plate or pan or bowl with the family’s dinner. Bruno giggled to himself, admiring how his niblings had grown, taking after his sisters’ respective quirky natures. It was going to be hard to excuse himself from dinner.
Alma walked in carrying Bruno’s favorite tamales, followed by his brothers-in-law. Now was as good a time as any.
“Mama,” Bruno said just above a whisper.
“Hm?’ she said, setting down her baking dish without looking up.
Bruno took a breath and let it out.
“I’m not coming to dinner tonight.”
The entire room stopped what they were doing and stared at Bruno wide-eyed. All except for Félix and Dolores, who smiled at each other with a knowing look.
“What?” Alma asked in complete shock.
“I’m not joining the family for dinner tonight. I, uh, I have plans – dinner plans – with someone,” he replied, punctuating his sentence with a nervous laugh.
Alma looked taken aback. She loved and missed her son dearly, despite years of refusing to say his name. She unsuccessfully tried to hide her disappointment while fiddling with the placement of her cutlery.
“I see,” she said, “and who will you be joining for dinner this evening?”
Bruno was flustered and struggled to answer. Félix, however, was happy to help.
“He’s going on a date with the thick mamí that lives next to the bakery.”
The room erupted into whistles and teasing bouts of “Oyeee!” while Bruno tried to hide his face in his ruana.
“Es el tomando mi pelo? I didn’t hear about that!” chimed Dolores. She’s lying, of course; she hears everything.
Alma was unamused. She sat down in her chair and magically whisked Bruno’s chair away from the table with a flick of her wrist. The teasing banter settled down and Bruno came out from his poncho.
“You will be missed, mi hijo,” she said.
“Sorry, mama,” Bruno said.

Bruno made his way to your house, so nervous that he forgot to ask Isabela to make a bouquet for you. He didn’t want to show up empty-handed, so he ran into the bakery and got some pandebono, hoping it meshed well with whatever you were cooking.
He finally arrived at your door and knocked three times, whispering to himself, “Knock, knock, knock on wood.”
You answered the door wearing a flour-dusted apron that you felt did not flatter your body. You stared wide-eyed at your crush who was smiling and nervously holding up a bag of bread.
“Bruno!” you blurted out. “I wasn’t expecting you – uh, how are you?” You took the bread from his hands.
Bruno frowned. Did you forget about their date?
He looked down to meet your eyes and mustered up the courage to speak.
“I’m good, yeah, yeah, I’m good. It’s just we had a da- I mean, you invited me to dinner. It’s seven o’clock, haha.” He wanted to curl up and die.
“Oh, Bruno,” you said with a small laugh, “dinner’s tomorrow. I’m preparing everything now.”
Bruno couldn’t possibly be redder. He didn’t know what to say.
Above, the clouds rapidly began to cover the sun and sky, a few drops beginning to fall.
“Oh, it’s raining! Hurry, come inside!” you said, pulling Bruno in by his free hand. He nearly tumbled over, but you were quick to catch his scrawny frame with your broader body. You helped him get to his feet, smiling ear to ear at his embarrassed face.
You turned to grab some water and a plate for him since he’d already made the trip over here.
He couldn’t help but admire how beautiful you looked, despite your messy hair and disheveled clothing. Your apron was tied tight around your plump figure and Bruno could see every roll and curve of your body. He knew he probably shouldn’t be undressing you with his eyes right in front of you, but you just looked so delectable and somehow, so motherly.
“She would be such a good mamí,” he thought, quickly shaking the notion from his head so you wouldn’t notice him lusting after you.
You turned around again to face Bruno and nudged your head to the side, signally him to follow you. You led him to your small dining area and placed down a plate of the bread he brought with a glass of water.
“I’m sorry I don’t have much for you now,” you said bashfully.
“No, no! My fault…I probably should’ve looked at a calendar, ha,” said Bruno.
“Well regardless, I’m glad for the company,” you said smiling. You walked back to the kitchen to continue getting ready for the large dinner you planned for the both of you. Lord knows that poor boy needs to eat.
“How is tu familia, Bruno?” you called from the kitchen.
In the seconds since you left him, he had stuffed two balls of bread in his mouth and was working on a third. He panicked for a moment trying to respond you, causing him to choke.
“Bruno?” you called out to him again. There was no answer.
You wiped your hands clean and rounded to corner to check on him and saw as he beat his chest with a closed fist. His face was beginning to turn blue, and his eyes could practically pop out of his head from how wide they were.
You ran to his side, unsure of how to help. You tried to give him a rough couple of pats on his back, but he continued to choke. He looked so scared, and you began to cry from the fear of losing him.
“What do I do, what do I do?” you tried to ask him.
Bruno grabbed at your hands, turned around, and drew your arms around his waist so that his back was flush against your torso. He tried to cross your hands over his stomach, and you quickly got the message. You began squeezing his tiny body in short spurts, eventually dislodging the bread from his throat.
Bruno fell to his hands and knees, coughing and struggling to breathe. You took the glass of water from the table and knelt next to him, offering the cup. He put a hand up, letting you know that he was okay, and pulled himself up on feet using the table for leverage.
He swayed and brought a hand up to touch his head.
“Ay, I’m dizzy,” he said.
You snaked your arm around his and led him to your bedroom to let him rest.

Around two hours later, when you had finished preparations for tomorrow’s meal, you took off your apron and went back to your room to check on Bruno. He was lying awake and had the hood of his ruana up, covering the majority of his face.
You gently rapped on your open bedroom door, leaning against the doorframe.
“Knock, knock,” you said.
Bruno pulled his hood further over his face and mumbled a soft, “I’m sorry,” into the fabric.
You walked into the room and joined him on the bed, awkwardly sliding your body behind him, and wrapping an arm around his waist.
“You know you have nothing to be sorry for, right? Accidents happen, amor,” you whispered to him.
“Bruno is stupid,” he said.
You huffed a small laugh and slid your fingers up and down his chest.
“Why is Bruno stupid, Hernando?” You played along with his little act. Bruno loved to bring out Hernando when he was ashamed.
“He ruins everything,” he responded.
“Bruno didn’t ruin anything. Like I said, accidents happen,” you said, sighing a little. “I was so worried about you.”
You could feel Bruno’s heart thumping hard from under his clothes. You knew Bruno liked you, but you were waiting until he was comfortable enough around you to make your move. You planned to confess your feelings to him at dinner.
“Did I ruin it?” Bruno asked all of sudden. You looked at him confused.
“Ruin what, Hernando?”
Bruno pulled off his hood and sighed.
“Did I ruin my chance with you?”
You could cry, he was so sweet.
“No, but you sure know how to keep a girl waiting, amor.”
Bruno shuffled around to face you without you having to move the arm that encircled his waist. He was trying to be brave for you.
“I think you’re beautiful, (y/n),” he said.
You couldn’t think of anything to do or say but kiss him. His lips were soft, warm, and plush against yours. You closed your eyes tight, enjoying the passion between you two, but you could tell Bruno’s eyes were wide open from the green light somehow penetrating your eyelids.
You pulled back, opening your eyes as the green light vanished from his.
“I think you’re beautiful too.”

Summary: Bruno Madrigal is a popular telenovela writer, though he keeps his identity secret under the pen name Pedro Oscar. You just happen to be a big fan of his who’s doing their laundry while a telenovela plays in the background.

Mirabel and her abuela take the lead as you descend the stairs from the roof, leaving you plenty of time to silently wrangle your mixed emotions. They writhe and buzz beneath your skin, forming a nameless tangle of thorns in your chest while Bruno walks ahead of you, falling in step with his mother. 
He looks so happy like this, chatting away at Mirabel and Señora Madrigal. Though his dips into the conversation are shy, he’s gaining back confidence with each shared joke and comfortable quip. Their words bounce uselessly around in your ears, unheard as your feet carry you just three strides behind.  
It’s good that he’s happy. That his mother wants him back. It’s a good thing that you didn’t have to fight tooth and nail against this woman, that Mirabel and her family seem to have begun their healing. It isn’t any of your business, especially since Bruno seems willing to let bygones be bygones.
So why is there this nameless snake in your chest, constricting your heart and pumping venom into your throat? 
“Mirabel!” the woman you remember as Julieta cries as Mirabel comes to the bottom of the stairs, rushing forward to envelop her daughter in a tight hug. “Oh Mira, we were so worried when we couldn’t find you. Are you alright?”
“Mom, I’m fine,” Mirabel laughs off the question on instinct, though she winces a second after and amends, “Well, I probably need to clean my hands.” Julieta lets out a long-suffering sigh, pulling away to cradle her daughter’s hands in her own, and you look away politely as she begins to fret over Mirabel’s health. A taller, seemingly distinguished man hurries over only seconds later, his glasses, but more importantly, his clumsy fumbling is a familiar pattern to your eyes. It’s an easy leap to assume this man is her papa, or at least someone like that. 
“Ay Mirabel, we looked everywhere. There were so many mice and spiders,” he shudders violently, whole body cartoonishly rippling as if the man were a cat rather than a human with a spine. The reaction gets a sympathetic laugh out of Mirabel and an exasperated sigh from her mother. 
“So how are we going to perform without a stage?” Someone’s voice cuts through the happy reunion, only to be shushed with exasperation by an older man. The young teen in a bright yellow sweatshirt seems to bristle at the response. “What, I can’t say that we don’t have a stage? What’s that? Not a stage!”  
You only give the kid a haphazard glance before Mirabel just shakes her head and walks over to the shattered chandelier and stage. Though the majority of the chandelier is lost to shards of crystal, the lone candelabra that makes up the very tip of the chandelier has somehow managed to survive the fall. Mirabel pries candelabra free with a wince as the people around her gasp, before presenting it to her family with a surefire smile.
“We do what we’ve always done. We bring the show to the people.” She says it with such utter confidence, you almost find yourself believing her despite the clear evidence to the contrary. “The Madrigals used to be a traveling troupe. We’ll just perform somewhere else until we can get the theater up and running again. Right Abuela?” And then that confidence wavers, Mirabel looking back into the stairwell where the three of you remain just barely out of sight, her smile trembling at the edges as she holds this beloved family heirloom in bloodied hands. She’s so small, her fingers gripping this sculpture of brass and gold that’s almost as large as her head.
Bruno and his mother freeze in the shadows, each showing a different kind of hesitation while they watch Mirabel reunite with her family. Their family, you mentally correct yourself, eyeing both of these people who stare at their loved ones with such trepidation that it’s almost painful. Señora Madrigal clutches her hands close to her chest, a deep frown lining her lips, and she looks so much like a younger version of your Abuela that the pain in your chest swells and threatens to spill into your silence with a lump that you swallow down. Another memory strikes you like a punch to the sternum, raw and unyielding. 
You’d been so furious with yourself when you broke Abuelo’s radio. You really hadn’t meant to break it, but your favorite band was going to be playing on the radio that day and you had been trying to tape a copy of their song for weeks. It was an antique, weathered thing with delicate dials and a finicky antenna, but Abuelo always seemed to know how to turn it just so, eternally patient and loving with the radio he had bought Abuela for their fifth anniversary. He was at the shop today though, and Abuela was too busy cooking dinner to sit by the radio and help you. The awaited hour crept closer and closer, and when you couldn’t get the dial to turn to the right station, you twisted and snapped it off in a panic. 
The radio was too old to have any replacement parts lying around in local repair shops, and the places that could claim to fix it were far too expensive for Abuelo’s budget. It was just your luck that Abuelo chose to come up to check on the house. 
His warm voice cut through the air like a knife, “Estoy en casa-” he said, only to stare you down with a horrified frown while you held the snapped-off dial in your hand. You still remember the way dread pooled in your stomach, hot tears clouding your vision as you ran to your room and shrunk under your covers. Abuelo didn’t even call after you. All you heard was the soft click of a shutting door, and footsteps down the stairs to the shop below. A spiral of guilt, embarrassment and regret dragged you further down into your hiding spot, the snapped knob of the radio dial clenched painfully tight in your hand.
Abuela found you not long after, a gentle knock on your door. “It is never easy to apologize nenúfarité,” she had said, pulling you out from your self-imposed punishment into a firm hug that was just as warm as your bed, “because you see the hurt in the other person’s face, and know that you are the one who caused it. It can be difficult to face that, but we must if we want the hurt to get better. You must see the wound before you can bandage it, hm?”
Grief, anger, and an alien sense of compassion wrestle with one another for control, leaving you frozen to the step as Abuela- no, Señora Madrigal steps into the light, expression wobbling with unshed tears. Bruno almost reaches for her as she moves forward, and that makes the anger flare violently, a reminder of his loneliness that you’ve seen over the year that you’ve known him-
“Of course, Mirabel,” she replies, a watery smile finally pulling at her lips as she walks over to her granddaughter, placing a hand on her shoulder. 
“Mi familia, I am sorry. I see, now, that I held on too tight. I was so afraid that I would lose you, that I hurt you all.” she says, hands clasped together in front of her chest.   
“Mama,” Julieta murmurs, her expression creased with concern. But Señora Madrigal holds up a hand to halt her, and she takes Julieta’s hands into her own. She reaches for another woman, the stressed one in a yellow dress that had snuck by you before. Pepa, you think.
“No, mis hijitas. I was wrong. I can deny it no longer. There has been too much pressure on you from me to ensure our Encanto stays afloat. I worried for so long about our safety through the business that I forgot what it was all for.” She turns again to her granddaughter, her smile faint with guilt. “So you all could live happy and long lives, even without my Pedro. I lost Brunito to this. I almost lost Mirabel to this. I will lose no more of you.” 
Bruno covers his mouth to stifle a gasp into a cough, and the rest of the gathered family squint into the dark stairwell. “Tío Bruno?” Mirabel halfway pleads in your direction, and you watch as the love of your life visibly struggles with whether or not to reveal himself to the people he stayed away from for an entire decade. “I know you’re there. Please, Tío.”
“Mi vida,” you murmur soft enough for him alone to hear, “go to them.” But your feet stay firmly planted in the carpet, the swirl of emotions weighing you too much to even consider going with him. It’s as if a physical line separates you between the safety of this shadowed staircase and the light of the hallway beyond. This isn’t your reunion. And you can barely even bear to be in the same room as that woman right now, let alone a whole extended family. 
Bruno glances back at you, eyes wide with worry as he glances between his family and you. Then, as if sensing your hesitation, he holds out a hand to you, still silent. For a moment you consider not taking it, pulling away from this place altogether and somewhere safe, but then you look back up at his face, and your resistance crumples. 
There are tears in his eyes, and you know with a sudden surety that he wants this more than anything. Most importantly, he wants you to be a part of it. And how could you ever say no to that? 
Pulled by his hand, both of you step beyond the line and into the light of the corridor.

Casita was quiet, the only sounds coming from Julieta in the kitchen, working nimbly to prepare lunch for the house hold. Pepa, at her sisters side, Félix with the two, chatting ideally. When the sound Casita’s front doors being thrown open caught their attention. The two sisters looked at each other a moment before they slowly inched towards the courtyard. Ears straining at the sound of hushed words, before a bang was heard. “Félix, get Agustín and go around…” Félix nodded at Julieta’s words and quickly shifted to leave through the kitchen to get outside, to find the city boy. “Querida~ amor… por favor~” the sound of Bruno’s voice caused shivers to run down Julieta’s back, and without a second thought she ran out to the courtyard. Eyes instantly in the scene before her. Casita had put a wall between Y/n and Bruno, two doors the only thing keeping them truly apart.
Y/n stood a step away from the door, hands raised and clasped over her mouth, exaggerated fearful shaking racking through her body as she took in staggered breaths. Bruno stood on the other side, a deranged took dripping from his features as he leaned against the other side of the door with a look Julieta has never seen her younger brother wear.
“You were meant to be mine~!” The raised tone that melted off of Bruno’s tongue was chilling, his eyes closed and a sickly sweet smile chilling the room. He laid a open hand on the door, leaning his forehead against the rough wood. “I am all that you need~!” Dark eyes opened, pupils blown wide as he slid his hand down the door, slowly moving his hand to rest on the door knob. “You carved open my heart~” Bruno gripped the door knob with his left hand as he spoke, right hand clutching at the fabric of his ruana, harshly twisting left and right before pulling his hand away, a sneer pulling at his lips. “Can’t just leave me to bleed~!” Banging an open palm on the door he let out a staggered breath. “Y/N!¡!” It was quiet a moment, Pepa’s eyes wide as she struggled to figure out what to do. “Open the….” Bruno took in a deep breath, the sickening smile returning to rest upon his lips. “Open the door please~” his tone swam in a sickening tone that turned Pepa’s stomach, leaving her feeling sick and helpless, and she found herself only able to watch, as both sides played out. Her eyes found Y/n’s who gave her a weak smile in turn, her hand pulling out a small bottle of clear red liquid from her satchel.
Bruno reached his hands up, resting them near the top of the door before leaning his head against the rough wood, eyes closed, hands shaking. “Y/n open the door~” Y/n gripped the clear red liquid tightly in her hand, eyes blown in fear as she rested her back against the door, hand reaching up to wipe furiously at her eyes. “Y/n, can we not fight anymore please~” turning her head to the right, she caught sight of blue joining yellow before she sucked in a breath, breaking the brief eye contact. “Can we not fight anymore~!” The bang that resounded through the courtyard echoed, causing Y/n to jump in fright, attention back to looking at the door as she slowly slid to the floor. “Y/n, I’m sure you’re scared~!” Popping the small bottle open Y/n took a breath, eyes locking with Pepa and Julieta a moment before she brought the bottle to her mouth. “I’ve been there, I can set you free~!” The bang that echoed through the courtyard cause both Pepa and Julieta to flinch, a storm cloud appearing and thundering over the two sisters as they watched in horror. “Y/n don’t make me come in there!” Throwing her head back Y/n emptied the contents into her mouth, eyes closing as she clutched the bottle close to her chest, raising and falling with every staggered breath she took.
“I’m going to count to three!” Bruno banged on the door at the end of his sentence, his eyes momentarily going to his sisters, his sinister smirk widening impossibly at the audience that he gained. “One” he held up one finger, dark eyed drifting between the two, frozen in their spots. “Two” Y/n crawled back away from the door, before she fell to her side. Glass bottle clanking tauntingly through the air as it his cement and rolled. “Fuck it!” Stepping back Bruno clenched his fists, and prepared to kick the door before arms wrapped around him and pulled him back. “Agustín! Félix!” Pepa called in surprise, eyes watching intensely as Bruno was dragged back away from the door. “Bruno what is wrong with you!?” the raven haired teen only tilted his head in response, wide doe eyes looking over his shoulders to his sisters novios.
“Y/n!” Julieta was quick to run forward once she had registered that Bruno was properly restrained by Félix and Agustín. The teen remained unmoving, breathing shallow. “Pepa go grab something for her to eat quick!” At those words Bruno perked up, his eyes quickly turning to the door casita had placed between himself and Y/n; Pepa’s yellow dress moving in a blur as she ran into the kitchen. Doors moved and makeshift walls receded to where they originally had come from. “What’s wrong with Y/n?” He asked in confusion as he looked towards Julieta as she pulled the limp teen into her lap, hand running through her hair to move the flyways out of her face. “Y/n, wake up, Pepa is getting you an arepa” Y/n’s shoulders were shook and her softly.
“You psicópata! She drank something because of you!” Félix’s hands tightened on the raven haired teens arms as he, and Bruno found himself fighting back a wince at the tight grip. “psicópata?” He muttered eyes turning back to Julieta as Pepa ran back into the room with an arepa in her hand. “Ay dios mio” Bruno fought back a smile as he slumped forward, a chuckle leaving his lips. “Y/n, Querida, scenes over” at his words Y/n pushed herself up to sit, head tilting as she looked to Bruno who smiled lovingly to her. “That wasn’t in the script” Bruno shook his head at Y/n’s words and slowly pulled his limbs free from the his sisters novios grasps. Y/n looked towards Julieta and Pepa a moment before she pushed herself up, offering Julieta a hand once she was standing.
“But…” Julieta hesitated a moment looking towards Y/n’s hand before back to her brother. “You were shaking with fear, I felt scared for you looking into your eyes!” Y/n simply smiled and leaned down, grabbing Julieta’s hand and pulling her up. “Mí vida, you put your heart and soul into that scene didn’t you?” Y/n hummed quietly, hand patting Julieta’s shoulder reassuringly before she turned to Bruno with a smile. “So did you!” She stepped forward a step before her arm was grabbed by Pepa, who’s eyes were on her brother, pooled with hesitancy. Y/n looked back to Pepa smiling in reassurance and she reached her free hand into her satchel, and pulling out a small note book. “It’s okay, we were just reenacting a scene from this play, it’s called ‘Heathers,’ it’s really big in the cities right now”
“You make a really good J.D Cariño” Y/n gave Pepa one last smile as she stepped closer to Bruno. “Using my name instead of Veronica though?” Bruno rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly. “Lo siento, I thought it would get a more genuine reaction” Y/n shook her head as she looped her arm around Bruno’s with a content hum. “It caught me off guard that’s for sure. But I think you scared your sisters because of it” Bruno finally glanced to the two and panic instantly flooded his system as he quickly stopped forward. “Lo siento! I didn’t, I didn’t really think that through.” He bumped his forehead with the palm of his hand muttering quietly before offering more apologies.
“Ayy we should have known” Pepa shook her head and threw the arepa in her hand at Bruno with an annoyed look. “I thought I was going to have to hit you with lightning!” She glared in annoyance at her brother before huffing and turning away from him, arms crossed. Félix was quickly to shimmy his way to stand next to Pepa, wrapping her in a loving hug. “If you were to have so much as put a finger in Y/n” Julieta waved her finger threateningly at Bruno and huffed out a sigh as he nodded quickly.
Bruno moved to stand next to Y/n once more. “No…” Bruno slipped an arm around Y/n’s waist pulling her closer to his side with a smile. “Never” he leaned down and peppered her with quick kisses, muttering words of affection as he did so.

I've started a new job so I took some time off to get used to my new schedule and I hope to finish the next chapter hopefully sometime this week and have it posted this weekend but fingers cross I will be able to finish writing it! Victor walked around the village in hopes of finding victoria, luckily he quickly found her with alma. Victor brushed off his clothes before walking over to his abuela and his sister. As he approached the pair he picked up on their conversation. “Abuela! I found out that I can use my powers to help grab things from  the river like I helped senor ortiz get one of his shirts from the river while remaining completely dry!” Victoria exclaimed excitedly at her new talent, Alma was clearly not listening to her, she was too busy watching as mariano and senora guzman left a shop.
“Yes mija, that sounds nice, could you go and carry the donkeys to the barn?” Alma asked Victoria, who had a hurt expression on her face as Alma turned to look at her finally. “What’s wrong mija?” Victoria wiped away a single stray tear before responding to Alma, “Luisa can carry heavy things, not me!” Victoria walked away from Alma and walked to the village river. Victor quickly ran to catch up with victoria who sat down next to the river and quietly cried into the palms of her hands.
“Victoria?” Victor said softly as he approached his younger sister. “Why can’t I be myself without being mistaken for others?!” Victoria asked as she wiped away her tears. Victor sat down next to Victoria and hugged her. “I think abuela just hasn’t seen how cool our powers are! I mean you can shift into water, you can also shift water into shapes to entertain the village! But I mean my powers are pretty bad!” Victor told Victoria, obviously fishing for compliments which made her smile at him. “Yeah your powers do stink!” Victor looked at Victoria offended, before laughing.
The twins made their way back to Casita. Victoria walked into the kitchen where julieta, pepa and y/n sat talking about y/n’s health. Victor ran upstairs and went into the walls to go and talk to bruno.
“Pa!” Victor smiled as he walked into Bruno's makeshift room and saw Bruno and his abuelo watching the rat telenovela. “Hey mijo just in time for this episode serafina just found out her husband had been killed by his secret lover.” Victor let out an ‘ooh’ before sitting down on the small stool.
Victor went to sit down and watched the telenovela for a bit but before he got to sit he heard laughing, he walked over to the crack in the wall and put his ear next to it, hoping to hear what was going on.
Victor quickly caught what was happening outside the walls. He could hear Alma yelling. Casita quickly brought Victor out of the walls and outside where he got a view of everything, there were colorful flowers all around the courtyard, and across the roof. He took note of how quickly they disappeared. He turned his attention to everyone in the courtyard and made his way next to luisa, victoria and a colorful isabela. 
“That’s why I'm in the vision! I’m saving the miracle!” Mirabel explained to Alma.
“You have to stop mirabel! The cracks started with you! Bruno left because of you!” Victor wanted to run over to his cousin's side and stick up for her but he saw his abuelo shake his head at him as he went to step forward. “Luisa’s losing her powers, Isabela’s out of control, the twins and your tia have been all over the place because of you!” Mirabel leaned back, not expecting Alma to yell at her.
“I don’t know why you weren't given a gift but it is not an excuse for you to hurt this family!” Mirabel let out a gasp at Alma's words. Victoria and victor noticed the house shook for a second before it stopped. “I will never be good enough for you will I?” Mirabel asked as she looked up at Alma, then looking at julieta and Augustin who were near the doorway. 
“No matter how hard I try! No matter how hard any of us tries! Luisa will never be strong enough, isabela won’t be perfect enough, Victoria won’t be isabela, Victor won’t be good enough! Bruno left our family because you only saw the worst in him-!” Mirabel pointed out. 
“Bruno didn’t care about this family!” Pepa squeezed y/n’s shoulder at Alma's words. “He loves this family! I love this family! We all love this family! You're the one that doesn’t care! You're the one breaking our home!” Mirabel stood up for herself.
“Don’t you ever-!” Mirabel cut alma off. “The miracle is dying because of you!” Alma's eyes widened a bit. Casita creaked before cracking down the middle. “No, No, No!” y/n gasped as she watched casita break straight down the middle. “The candle!” Felix pointed out. Everyone looked over at the candle as it fell on its side in the window frame.
Casita shook causing everyone to shake before regaining their balance. Casita helped mirabel get up to the roof, camilo ran up the stairs and tried to stop mirabel, Victoria dumped out a vase that had water in it to try and hold her up so she could help mirabel grab the candle, isabela quickly grew a vine and tried to swing up onto the roof but as she did her door went out causing her to fall, camilo was mid shift when his door went out, Victoria was close to mirabel when her powers went out, causing her to grab onto and railing. Luckily Casita helped isabela, victoria and camilo land. The trio looked at each other before being pushed out by casita.
Victor noticed his abuelo kept fading in and out victor watched as he motioned to the front doors. He looked all around for any signs that Bruno had left the walls but he couldn’t find any in time. Casita pushed everyone out and onto the front yard. Everyone quickly got up and tried to tell mirabel to get out of casita. “MIRABEL! LEAVE IT!” julieta yelled out for her daughter.
The outside of Bruno's tower cracked and some of the roof started to fall off in the back. “MIRABEL THE HOUSE IS GOING TO FALL!” Inside the house, all the pictures and paintings on the walls fell to the ground, some frames shattering due to their fall. Mirabel had felt the candle graze her fingertips, and Casita helped her grab it. “MIRABEL GET OUT!” As soon as the words left y/n’s mouth, Bruno's tower fell over onto Alma's room. Luckily casita moved mirabel quick enough to get her away from the falling tower and onto the floor where casita covered mirabel with doors, side tables and chairs to protect her from falling debris. Mirabel hunched over the candle trying to keep it lit but failed to do so, the candle had finally burned out.
Victor watched as everyone got up and rushed around the ruins of the house. Victoria let out a tear as she watched everyone push over debris “It’ll be ok toria!” Victor comforted his sister who let out a quiet cry. “What happened to my pa?” Victor felt his heart drop as he looked around and couldn’t find Bruno anywhere. Victor held Victoria closer and cried with her.
After the twins had pulled themselves together they both walked over to where y/n tried to help pepa comfort Antonio “Antonio, mijo don’t cry!” y/n tried to sound reassuring but sounded on the brink of crying herself. Victor walked over and hugged y/n. “Pa loved you so much mama! I know he did!” Victor held onto his mother, victoria and victor noticed y/n had a big scrape on her leg due to her being pushed out the house and her scraping her leg on a rock outside. Pepa had noticed the scrape too and quickly had y/n sit down “Julieta come quick!” Pepa called out. Victor noticed his tia talking to Mirabel “JULIETA!” Both Mirabel and Victor looked around the ruins of the house.
“Let me help you!” Dolores helped Alma sit down on a chair they had found amongst the debris. Victor had accidentally made eye contact with y/n who just looked at victor before julieta stepped in between the two to help cover up y/n’s scrape. “Victor What did you mean by-!” y/n was cut off by julieta telling everyone mirabel was missing. That whole night the family and some of the villagers helped look for mirabel.

You sighed and tried to block the pain from your mind as you let Casita help you to the nearest chair. You were sick of this, of not being able to do things by yourself and having to depend not only on your family, but on the house itself. It's not that you weren't grateful, but each day you felt more like a burden than a person.
"Thank you Casita" you whispered
You didn't even pay attention to the little tile that waved in greeting, you were too busy gently rubbing your hands and trying to hold back the angry tears that stung in your eyes.
You really missed the time when you could do more things, when you could run, jump, cook, play with your nieces and nephew, when simply moving from one chair to another was not an almost impossible herculean task for you. A time that seemed so far away now.
It started just three years after your wedding. You and Bruno were at your best, just enjoying each other's company, being goofy and happy, you had even made plans to make your family bigger (even if he turned red as soon as you mentioned it), it was all so perfect. Until the first blackout.
It had happened out of nowhere, one moment you were buying books with Pepa and the next everything had suddenly gone dark. By the time you woke up, you were already at home, in your bed, with the whole family looking at you with concern while Julieta tried to bring down your fever. Your sister-in-law didn't know what caused it, and despite what she might say, the soft smiles she gave you and how much she cared for you, you knew that a part of her had never stopped feeling guilty, because no matter how much magical food she gave you, you never healed.
Things had only gotten worse for you since that day, blackouts occurring more and more frequently, your joints and muscles getting weaker, condemning you to a life of constant pain. At first, you didn't want to say anything, you didn't want to worry Bruno or give Julieta more work, but when Pepa had to carry you back in her arms because your legs couldn't bear your weight anymore, you had to admit that something was wrong with you.
Your husband hardly ever left your side since then, saying that he didn't help the town much anyway. Alma accepted it, too worried that something could happen to the person she saw as another child, Julieta scolded you for not going to her every time something hurt and Pepa had made it her mission not to lose sight of you in the strange times when her brother was not with you.
"You can't leave me alone with those two, Y/N" she had told you "I'd go crazy"
"You already are" you teased softly
She smiled at you, but you could see in her eyes the same fear that invaded them all. They never told you anything, but you knew that Bruno had tried to look into your future to find out how he could help you or what would happen to you, when would you get better? But he never shared that vision, and deep inside you knew the answer: you never would.
It was hard at first, but you were strong for him, because you knew that the only person more terrified than you was your husband. He was afraid of losing you, of not being able to do anything for you, and even though you felt the same fear of leaving him, you decided that you couldn't let that paralyze you, that regardless of whether you had much or little time left, you were going to enjoy it with your family. 
Your nieces and nephew were quick to get used to your situation. Isabela tried to act as if she could take care of you by herself, she would spend afternoons with you after school and she would fill your hair with beautiful flowers to cheer you up when you felt bad. Often she and Camilo competed over who could make you smile the most.
Luisa was extremely careful with you. She had just gotten her gift just two years before and she was terrified of hurting you with her strength, so she was content to just talk to you from the door. Mirabel, your precious butterfly, was the one who kept you the most company.
The girl was a miracle, you had told Julieta, who lit up the whole room with her mere presence. It didn't matter if Pepa or Bruno were keeping you company, Mirabel was always, always by your side, telling you how her day had gone, what things she had found, showing you her drawings and simply making you feel warmer every time she smiled at you.
However, everyone knew that it was Dolores who took care of you the most. The girl was silent, but her gift had turned out to be the most useful in helping you. She was always aware of you, your heart rate, your breathing, everything. If you started to get agitated, the girl immediately warned any adult who was nearby, she was like your little personal sentinel, always watching over you even if she wasn't around.
So you weren't surprised when Bruno rushed into the kitchen, almost tripping over his own feet. You smiled lovingly at him when he dropped in front of you with concern etched on his face. You were pleasantly surprised how after so many years, he was still incredibly handsome in your eyes and how he could look at you with such love and adoration, as if he hadn't spent the last few years practically having to shadow you.
"What happened?" he asked worried
"Nothing" you smiled "I just got a little dizzy, but I'm fine, Casita helped me"
He smiled back gently, stroking the back of your hand with his thumb, his touch as light as a feather. That was another thing he knew you hated: that nowadays your conversations were just to say who had helped you. There were no longer funny stories, innocent gossip or funny anecdotes, your life was slowly ending between the same walls.
"Amor..." you whispered
"Yes?"
"...please"
Your husband's expression changed to one of intense pain. It wasn't the first time you had this conversation, that you begged him to tell you what he had seen in that vision. You weren't stupid, you knew there was no cure, otherwise Julieta's food would have already worked, you didn't want to know how it would happen, if it would be painful or if you would go off quietly between dreams. All you wanted to know was how much time you had.
"Y/N -" he started
"I need to know, Bruno" you interrupted him "I don't even know if I'll make it to next Christmas"
It was a depressing thought, because it was September, and if it weren't for the intense pain you felt all the time and that had gotten worse in recent weeks, you wouldn't be making such a suggestion knowing that Dolores was listening to you. But you felt that now was not the time to be careful.
"Mi vida-"
"Please" you begged "...just tell me, how much time do I have?"
Bruno looked at you with an intense mix of fear, pain, and regret, but with a flash of love, love so deep you could almost feel it in your very bones. He sighed and took your hands gently. His grip was shaky and you knew, even before the words left his mouth, that his response was causing him great pain.
"Not enough"

Bruno Madrigal Crush Headcannons
This man has spent a good portion of his life watching his family through walls, hoping and wishing and yearning for their happiness, even if it doesn't involve him.
Meaning? He has a staring problem.
Bruno actually caught feelings for you from a distance. You're just...so nice. Nonjudgmental. It's what drew his gaze to you in the first place, how everyone felt safe to be themselves around you. He didn't even need to interact with you to see how wonderful you are!
...Which is a problem.
Bruno refuses to approach you-- he can't. It's just not possible.
But he will watch you.
He watches the way you smile and laugh, he's hypnotized by the way your hair bounces when you walk, he wants to take his thumb and rub away the little furrow between your eyebrows that shows up when you're reading intently, kiss your lips every time you bite them--
(Or is that too much, hahahahahahahah-- Kill him, someone anyone please please please---)
Bruno is so, so awkward. While Tio Bruno is funny and adoring with his family, as well as hilariously sassy when he wants to be, people outside his social circle are Not Trusted with anything but The Madrigal Manners. Years of being accused of malicious intent makes it difficult for him to be fully himself in public, and the decades of isolation made him forget all the important social cues.
But you? He's exponentially worse around you.
The few times you've actually spoken with Bruno, he was both Supremely Polite and a Tongue Tied Disaster.
He comments on easy, obvious topics, like the weather or the weekend, but he talks so quickly he can't breathe and starts laughing at things that aren't even jokes. He'll open doors for you or pull out your chair, but will trip over the door frame or accidentally tip the chair over and scramble to pick it back up.
You make him a mess. You whip his thoughts so frothy he can barely remember what he's said, let alone focus on putting up a wall. It's incredibly endearing, and it makes his crush on you supremely obvious.
He's had one or two childhood crushes, but it has been literal decades since the last time his heart beat this fast. It was so bad that this idiot (affectionate) literally thought he was having a heart attack the first time you made eye contact with him--Fully clutching at his chest and panicking before darting away to get some help.
There is a certain amount of guilt he feels about his crush. After all, he's not exactly prime husband material. Bruno is acutely aware of how old he is, and there aren't many love stories out there for people his age(a crime imo). "The fifty year old uncle" is usually the creepy antagonist in drama, never a romantic hero. Besides that, there's the matter of his reputation. Even with the rest of the Madrigal family working to repair it, there are still parts of the Encanto that don't like the weird fortune-telling hermit that LIVED IN THE WALLS OF HIS OWN HOUSE FOR SOME REASON.
(....There is also a little bit of guilt of the Catholic variety. His thoughts about you can get pretty spicy late at night. After one of those he can't bring himself to even look at you.)
Bruno won't confess his feelings to you if he can help it. He doesn't think he deserves romantic love, especially not from someone as wonderful as you, and the last thing he wants to do is burden you with his feelings. He's been enough of a burden already. He will try to get over you before he even considers hinting that he likes you.
Unfortunately, Bruno's resolve isn't as strong as he wishes it was.
Every time he tries to suppress his feelings, someone will simply say your name in passing and it's enough to fully divert his train of thought back to how kind you are, how funny, how understanding....
Fantasies have always been a huge coping mechanism for him, but lately, baby you are the star of every. single. one.
Some are realistic: He pictures the two of you hand in hand, walking to the market, and he's somehow managed to be funny and charming enough to make you smile just for him.
Or maybe you have a suitcase packed and ready to leave the village--it's raining of course--and Bruno will run out to you, pull you into a tight embrace and kiss the idea right out of you.
He could live out his childhood dream and be the director of a theater troupe, while you, his newest actor shaking with nerves, ask him to run through your lines together. He agrees, comforts you through your stage fright, and as your practice ends the chemistry between you both is electric enough to crackle. He just knows you'll do great things together...
Bruno is his best self in every fantasy, of course, witty and charming and without a single grain of sand in his hair. Often, in private, he has his rats reenact his favorite daydreams. (Whichever Rat that plays you gets extra treats. It's the most coveted role.)
...Eventually, though, his wistful sighing and blatant eavesdropping on any conversation involving you start to get on his Family's nerves. They've been supportive of his crush--why wouldn't they be, they've met you, you're great!-- but it's also obvious Bruno is going to need a helping hand.
Mirabel in particular gets it in her head to play Cupid after she sees how happy her Tio gets talking about you. She gathers up the youngest generation of Madrigals, and all of them begin conspiring ways to push Bruno into as many situations with you as possible.
Isabella invites you over to help garden, while Luisa gets her Tio to come help her organize where the pots should go. Antonio begs you to play hide and seek with him and his animal friends, and it's not like Bruno can resist his nephew's puppy eyes either. Mirabel brings Bruno along to tell stories to some of the local village kids, and Camilo makes sure you're nearby to see his Tio in his element.
Bruno immediately picks up on the fact that his nieces and nephews are trying to meddle, but he can't find it in himself to get upset about it.
Besides, it's a little hard to think lately when so many of your pretty smiles seem to be directed at him...
...Maybe he has more of a chance than he thought? 💞

Today, it was your turn to sweat bullets.
Dinner with Bruno went fabulously, and you two were practically inseparable ever since. Bruno would visit you almost daily, always bringing you little things that he thought would make you smile. Last week, he needle-felted a pair of rat dolls – one with an adorable little yellow sun hat and the other with a green poncho. A few days ago, he brought over his tiple and played you a little tune he wrote about what it would be like to be a bird. Today, he was bringing you to dinner at La Casita.
It wasn’t that you disliked the Madrigals; it was the opposite really. You loved catching up with Mirabel and Dolores. You brought Luisa lunch a few times a week, so she had to take a break from her chores.  Isabela and Pepa have even saved your personal garden on more than a handful of occasions. The entire familia Madrigal was delightful, but you’ve never been with them all together. The thought of going before your cariño’s family and being judged by them all in one room terrified you. What if they didn’t think you were good enough for their family? What if his mother disapproved of your relationship? Bruno loves his family and is very loyal – he would leave you no doubt if they asked.
Today you had to dress to impress.
You decided to wear a bright yellow, three-panel skirt that you hand-embroidered with the story of your family’s immigration to the Encanto, pairing it with a white off-the-shoulder blouse with puffy sleeves. You threw your hair into a classy low bun, pulling out a few locks of hair to frame your round face. You rouged your cheeks and lips so that your face said, “Innocence.” Señora Alma is a traditional woman, very much like your own mother; you knew exactly how to please people like her.
You ran through your head thinking of all the little things you could say to win her favor. You thought of how you could draw on your rapport with the rest of the family Madrigal or mention what an amazing cook you were and the countless meals you fed your Brunito when he came to visit. Speaking of food, you did not plan to show up to dinner empty-handed. You prepared a large baking dish filled with your infamous patacones topped with hogao. You once set these out as a snack for Bruno and he nearly proposed to you on the spot.
You were dressed, packed, and ready to face the Madrigals, but as you made your way to the foyer to meet Bruno, who was waiting to walk you to his home, you glanced at yourself in the mirror. You tried to ignore it, but sometimes you couldn’t help but hate the girl you saw in your reflection. Your nose was too broad for your liking, and you felt like your lashes could be longer and more feminine. You hated the way the velvet ribbons tying your huaraches to your ankles squeezed your thick calves, and the back rolls that were visible through your blouse. You knew your self-worth, and you knew that you were such a kind and loving soul, but you sometimes wondered what someone as beautiful as Bruno saw in you.
There are so many gorgeous, thin women in the Encanto. Women who were petite and graceful and seemed to hold the attention of every man, women, and child in the village. You, on the other hand, felt like little old you. Not bad, but nothing too special either. Nothing special enough to belong with the Madrigals.

Bruno was uneasy.
Today was the day that he got to formally introduce you to his family as his…whatever you guys were. He was so nervous and nauseous, but he knew that you would, “Wow,” them just as you did every time he heard you speak.
You had expressed to him your worries of not fitting in with his family, so he came extra early that afternoon to be with you and help assuage your fears. He was so sure that everyone would love you but…his mother may be a problem. Alma has never mentioned anything about disliking you, but she never seems pleased when Bruno would leave La Casita to be with you.
As Bruno waited for you to finish getting ready for dinner, he had grown more and more paranoid about the way things could go down tonight. He began pacing, shaking salt into his hand to toss over his shoulder, and jumping from floorboard to floorboard in your kitchen while trying not to step on the gaps between the wood. He had half a mind to run to the lake just outside the mountains surrounding the Encanto and look into the future, but he couldn’t leave you alone all nervous and panicky – it was his job to be nervous and panicky.
He hopped to another floorboard, wobbling when he balanced his weight all on one leg, as you rounded the corner into the kitchen. Your sudden presence frightened him, causing him to trip and fall. You giggled at this clumsy man and did a little run over to help him up.
“So silly, Brunito,” you said to him.
He didn’t respond, wide hazel eyes looking up and hungrily devouring your appearance.
“What?” you asked.
“Hermosa.”
Your felt your cheeks get warm as you helped Bruno settle on his feet. He couldn’t stop looking at you and admiring the little details on your skirt or the way your neck and shoulders were deliciously exposed. He sighed deeply, attempting to slow his accelerated heart rate.
You attempted to draw his attention back from wherever his mind went by brushing a salt and pepper coil of hair from his face, your hand gently caressing his cheek and landing on his stubbly chin.
“Are you ready to go, amor?” you asked gently.
His hand rose to cover the hand on his face, gently removing it so he could kiss the inside of your wrist.
“Ready when you are.”

The walk to La Casita was lovely. The sun was just beginning to set, and the weather could not be more perfect. You almost felt sad that you couldn’t enjoy more of the joyous day outside with Bruno.
As you two reached the cobblestone path that led to the house, you realized that you had never actually set foot in Bruno’s home. Bruno always came to visit you, and the rest of the Madrigals could always be found in the village, making themselves of use to anyone in need. You never had a real reason to visit until tonight.
“The house is beautiful, Bruno,” you said.
“Yep, and she’s really nice too. Never told anyone that I was in the walls.”
You furrowed your eyebrows in confusion but laughed anyway.
Reaching the house at last, you put one foot forward to climb steps leading up to the front door, but then you felt something hit your foot. You jumped back out of fright, and Bruno began to laugh.
“Say hola to Casita first,” he responded.
Confused again, you looked up at the majestic house, and gave an awkward greeting.
“Hola, Casita?”
The house began to come alive; the bricks on the front steps started jumping, the wooden shutters on all the windows began to swing wildly, and the terra cotta shingles on the roof began to dance. The blue front doors of the moving house swung open, and you felt the stones on the path rise to cup the back of your ankles. Casita physically pulled you into itself, Bruno being pulled in not far behind.
The magical house dropped you and Bruno in the center of the room, and you clenched the white fabric over your heart.
“The house has magic too?!” you exclaimed.
Bruno smiled down at your thrilled face, watching you as you excitedly spun around several times to take in the details of the house.
“You’ve never been here? The doors are open to everyone, you know.”
You stopped your child-like observation of the house and looked at Bruno.
“I’ve never had a reason to come. Your family is always conveniently around when I need them,” you said with a smile.
Bruno returned the smile and took from you the glass baking dish you carried.
“I’m going to set this in la cocina and then we can go on a little tour of Casita,” he said.
You nodded and watched as he disappeared into what you presumed was the kitchen.

“…and this way is my room,” Bruno said as he ushered you up the steps to his tower.
“Do I actually get to go in this room?” you teased.
He let out a single laugh and nodded his head.
Bruno had shown you all over La Casita but couldn’t allow you in anyone’s room. Instead, he pointed to each door and told you whose room was whose and described what the inside of each room looked like. You were having a hard time believing that one little boy essentially lives in an expansive jungle terrain filled with all sorts of exotic plants and animals, but then again, the house is alive. Anything could happen here.
As you reached the top of the stairs, Bruno turned around to look at you, back facing his ornate door.
“Sooo, it’s been a while since I’ve had a visitor and I’ve just moved back in really, so my room isn’t…the best. Plus, Casita can kind of sense my overwhelming need for space, so there might be –,” Bruno confessed.
“I’m sure it’s just wonderful,” you tried to assure him.
Bruno turned back around to face the door, mumbling something under his breath about hoping you still felt that way. You wondered how many pairs of socks he’s left strewn about the floor.
Bruno pried his door open, and a gust of sand flew out the crack. He coughed and shoved door until it was wide open for you to enter. You walked into the small room, admiring the beautiful hourglass wall with a gorgeous waterfall of sand behind it.
“Well, this is nice,” you said, trying to be kind. His room was very small and did not have an ounce of furniture. You briefly wondered if Bruno just curled up on a pile of sand to sleep at night; that would explain why he’s always covered in it when he comes to visit.
With a light chuckle, Bruno took your hand and led you to the falling sand.
“Close your eyes, duck your head, and bend your knees,” he instructed, doing just that and pulling you in after.
Once through the entryway, you two skidded down a dune of sand and the room opened up into a huge cave with what had to be hundreds of stairs. You looked up completely bewildered; you really didn’t believe him when he said the rooms were bigger on the inside.
Bruno saw your baffled expression and thought to cut through the tension.
“Yeah, I know…it’s a bit much.”
“A BIT??”
“You know, once you get to walking, you really don’t even notice the stairs, ha,” he said bashfully. “Come on, let’s get started.”
He had to practically drag you from where you stood; you and cardio weren’t the greatest of friends. You started to march up the stairs, panting and out of breath by the time you reached the seventh step. You could see Bruno holding in his laughter as he watched you struggled to climb, leaving you very embarrassed.
“Mira, it’s okay. Took me a while to get used to them when I came back.”
You gave him a thumbs up.
When the treacherous journey came to an end, you could barely stand.
“Are you okay, amor?” he asked.
“No,” you wheezed, hunched over.
Bruno really thought that now would be a good time to make a move on you.
“Here, Cariño, let me carry you.”
So, here’s the thing: Bruno Madrigal is maybe 100 lbs soaking wet. You, a thick and voluptuous woman, were much broader and heavier than him in comparison. You thought it was really sweet of him to offer but…you could snap him like a twig.
“I’m good, Brunito,” you said.
But he was insistent.
“No, no, allow me,” he said, bringing one of his scrawny, little arms around your shoulders.
“Bruno, I would really appreciate it if you did not do that,” you huffed. By now, you had finally caught your breath.
Bruno was devastated, not that he let that show. Did you really think so little of him? Did you really find him…well, little? Bruno was not a very machismo man, but he still had some pride, and right now, a very bruised ego.
“Did I do something wrong, mi amor?” he asked softly.
“No, no, I’m just too – I mean I just don’t want you to – ugh,” you said standing up.
Bruno understood, choosing instead to gently take your hand in his as he moved to your side. He turned and quietly led you to the ominous circular door that stood down the hall. You passed these cryptic sculptures of Bruno on the wall, one with gaping holes where his eyes and mouth should be.
“Bruno, what is this place?” you asked.
“It’s my vision cave.”
You reached out a cautious hand to grasp the bar handle and pulled it to the side. The door opened with a whoosh and you peered in.
Inside the dim, circular room the walls were lined with a familiar tribal pattern from the crown molding to the baseboards. The floor held a similar pattern, barely visible through the small piles of sand that seemed to be everywhere. You looked around, counting maybe 6 clay pots painted in various shade of brown all about the room, before you looked up and noticed the small blue hammock that was pressed against the far wall.
You were quiet for a while – mostly because you were terrified of the room, but also because you were disheartened at how little things Bruno owned. You wondered if he just hadn’t had the opportunity to fill his room with all the little things that made him happy, or if he didn’t think he deserved more than this.
“Truth be told, I only really come up here for visions. I still…I still sleep in the walls,” he said.
“Why?” you asked bewildered.
“Eeeh, you know. It’s where I feel comfortable, I mean it’s been ten years,” he said with a nervous laugh. “Plus – plus, it’d be a bit of a hazard for the little guys, right?” he rambled as he pulled a rat from underneath his ruana, holding it up for you to see.
“Uh, Bruno –”
“I’m really nervous about being home with my family and people are already hounding me for visions, and, I mean, I missed my family and all, but I’m not much of a people person,” he said rapidly, all in one breath.
You smiled at this absolutely ridiculous man that you had fallen for.
“You can always come stay with me.”

The two of you had made your way to the dining room to join the rest of the Madrigals for dinner. The whole family sat in their seats, beaming up at you as Bruno chivalrously pulled out your chair and gestured for you to have a seat.
“Hola, everyone!” you said, sitting down.
Everyone responded to you happily, except for Alma, who offered you a brief nod. You tried to keep your composure, but you were freaking out inside. You never realized how large Bruno’s family was.
“Thank you for joining us for dinner, (y/n),” said Alma. “Bruno has told us many wonderful things about you.”
Her words were kind, but her tone was cold. Bruno was sweating, reaching out for your hand under the table to calm his nerves.
“I’m glad to hear that, Señora,” you said, offering a smile.
The room was tense. Mirabel and her parents were smiling so hard, hoping it would alleviate the awkwardness of Alma’s clear disapproval. Isabela and Luisa had gone ahead and started eating, focusing hard on their food so they wouldn’t have to witness the tragedy that was occurring. Dolores was whispering to her parents, who both leaned in to listen to what she had to say, all the while Camilo wasn’t paying attention, eyes trained on his fork like he was trying to bend it with his mind.
You looked around at all the Madrigals when you noticed someone was missing.
“Where’s Antonio?” you asked, beginning to poke at your food.
The whole table looked up at you surprised. Even Camilo stopped practicing his “budding” mind powers to take notice of the topic.
“Yeah, where is Antonio?” Camilo asked.
A rain cloud began to form over Pepa’s head as she shivered in panic. Félix attempted to calm her by running his hands along her shoulders.
“He’s by the Rosarios,” Dolores piped in. “His jaguar scared their daughter, Sofía, so he brought her a stuffed capybara to say sorry.”
Dolores leaned her head to side, trying to hear what Antonio was up to.
“Sounds like he’s on his way back,” she said.
Pepa let out a great sigh, the cloud above her beginning to dissipate. Félix let out a hearty laugh and soon the rest of the family had erupted into laughter over the needless worrying. All except for Alma, whose lips were pressed into a thin line and had not taken her eyes off you since you joined the table.
The laughter died down and the family dug into their plates. Before you even noticed, the patacones you brought had gone. Not too long later, Antonio joined the table, apologizing for his tardiness. He told the table how he and Sofía had lost track of time while he introduced her to some smaller, more palatable animals. Dolores teased Camilo that Antonio had gotten a girlfriend before him, which made Antonio hide in his shirt.
Hoping to draw him back out of his shell, you asked Antonio about the capybara plush that he had given to his new friend, and he happily talked about his new-found love for sewing and doll making. You nudged Bruno’s shoulder, telling Antonio that he must get his love of crafting from his tío. Bruno gave you a sheepish, lopsided grin.
For a while, the family enjoyed each other’s musings about this and that. You kept sliding more and more food over to Luisa because you knew she missed lunch today; she smiled at you with her cheeks stuffed. Mirabel mentioned something about your skirt, and you got to excitedly tell her how you were inspired by her. When Isabella managed to pull your attention away from her sisters, she gave you some gardening tips because she noticed your begonias were dying again. The night had turned around and the atmosphere was perfect – you were ecstatic.
 Seizing the moment, Bruno cleared his throat loudly, drawing attention from everyone.
“Uh, hey,” he began, “I thought I’d take the chance to, uh, properly introduce (y/n). We-we’ve been seeing each other for a month or two, and yeah.” He threw out a nervous smile, one that was returned by his sisters and his lovely niblings. His brothers-in-law were smirking at him, wiggling their eyebrows teasingly.
Alma was still stone-faced, not even bothering to look up from her food.
“I’m happy you two are…happy together,” she said.
“Th-thanks, ma,” Bruno returned.

After dinner, you, Bruno, and his sisters decided to stay back to clean while everyone else went about their evenings. Pepa and Julieta were absolutely delighted that Bruno was finally seeing someone. You three would giggle or go back and forth sharing cheesy little stories about Bruno while he tried to hide himself in dish soap bubbles.
Eventually Julieta poked Pepa, motioned with her lips toward you and Bruno, and then tipped her head, signally her to leave. They left the kitchen smiling while you two washed and dried the last of the utensils.
You were so engrossed in Bruno’s new telenovela for his rats. It was called, “The Horses that Could Never Be.” The plot was confusing, and one of the rats had to play a horse, but that didn’t matter. Seeing Bruno’s face light up with so much joy was the only thing that mattered in that moment. His eyes were so wide and animated, and he used different tones of voice to act out certain lines so you’d know who was talking. It was adorable.
When you put away the last fork, you turned to address Pepa, but saw at once that you and Bruno were alone.
Bruno, noticing that your attention had been drawn away from him, turned to see what you were looking at.
“Oh,” he said. “Didn’t even know they left.”
“Some oracle you are, Brunito,” you joked.
He stuck his tongue out at you and dried his hands.
It was silent for a moment when he turned back to look at you. You admired his beautiful salt and pepper curls in the candlelight that illuminated the dark kitchen.
“You look so handsome,” you said in a whisper.
You couldn’t see it, but a small flush of pink tinted Bruno’s cheeks. He had such strong feelings for you but was so worried that he would come on too strong and chase you away. He rarely kissed you, opting instead to caress your face or take your hand in his. He hoped that the gifts he brought you, the little tokens of his love, were enough to show you how he felt without being too overwhelming. Bruno very much preferred to move at whatever pace you decided to set.
You stepped toward him, closing the tiny gap between you, and brought your hands to his chest. He let out a shaky breath as you touched him, watching as you leaned forward to place a soft kiss to his lips.
He deepened the kiss, putting his hands low on your hips so you wouldn’t go anywhere. You moaned against his mouth, loving the way his breath tasted and wanting so much more of him.
Alma cleared her throat.
You two separated so fast, Bruno almost fell.
“Señora!” you gasped.
“Bruno, don’t you think it’s rather late? Señorita (y/n) should be getting home,” she said.
“Of course! Of course, yeah, let’s uh, let me walk you home,” Bruno blurted out.
Alma turned to leave the kitchen, taking a few steps before whipping her head around.
“Buenas noches, (y/n),” she said to you before turning to address Bruno. “I’ll be waiting up for you, mi hijo.”
Alma left the kitchen.

Bruno took you home, kissed you chastely, and practically ran to get home. You went to bed that night, butterflies in your stomach with a newfound heat that spread across your body.
When Bruno returned home, Alma was indeed waiting up for him.
“Mama, I’m home. Get some rest,” he told her.
“Brunito, I would like to speak with you about something,” Alma said curtly. She gestured for Bruno to sit on the bench next to her.
“Is something wrong, ma?” Bruno asked.
“Mi hijo,” she said, “(y/n) seems lovely but…I don’t know if she is right for you. Ever since you’ve started seeing her, well, I haven’t seen much of you.”
Bruno felt awful. Had he really been neglecting his family?
“I’m so sorry mama, I really didn’t mean to –”
“– and she’s beautiful, don’t get me wrong, absolutely hermosa, but she doesn’t exactly look like she…fits you,” Alma interrupted.
“What do you mean she doesn’t f –”
“– and believe me, mi hijo, I’m just looking out for you. And for what’s best for the family. That’s all I’ve ever tried to –”
“I love her, ma!” Bruno shouted. He immediately slapped a hand over his mouth, not meaning to have said that out loud, or have used that tone with his elderly mother.
Alma just stood there, frowning. She sighed, knowing she did all she could to help Bruno see her side of things.
“Mama, I love her. I want to be with her. Look, I’m sorry about not being more present with the family, really, lo siento, but she makes me feel like me. She makes my life and all I’ve been through feel like it was worth it,” he confessed.
“I see,” said Alma, standing from her seat. “Well, who am I to stand in the way of true love?” She turned her back to him and made her way up the stairs, leaving Bruno alone in the dark.

You loved the Madrigals, you really did. Hell, you were married to one of them. But they could be a bit… overwhelming.
You and Bruno couldn’t even get a moment alone on your anniversary of all days, despite how much you tried. And oh, you tried, but you were constantly interrupted by people wanting to congratulate the two of you, wishing you happiness in your marriage and even giving you gifts. And when they threw a party for the two of you near the end of the day, you knew it would be late at night by the time you would get time alone. You appreciated it, of course, but all you really wanted to do was get in bed with your husband.
It was near midnight before you finally got to escape to your bedroom. After wishing everyone a good night and thanking them for everything, the two of you rushed to your room before anyone could interrupt again.
As soon as the door was locked he pulled you to him and kissed you. “Mierda, I thought we’d never get away,” he chuckled between kisses. “‘M sorry, mi vida. They mean well, it’s just…”
“Mm, I know. It’s sweet of them to do all of this for us,” you assured him, taking his hand and dragging him to the bed.
Bruno grinned as you pulled him onto the mattress with you, threading his fingers with yours as he laid next to you. “Yeah… I mean, it’s nice, but I’ve been dying to get alone all day,” he sighed, rubbing the back of your hand with his thumb.
You cupped his cheek in your hand. “Well we have now, don’t we?”
He nodded, climbing over you. “Yeah… gonna make up for all the time we lost today,” he whispered, leaning down to kiss at your neck.
“Y’know, I was thinking… maybe we could do something different tonight..?” you whispered back, slightly nervous about his reaction to what you’re about to suggest.
He leaned away to look at you, a small smile playing on his lips. “What is it?”
“Um… well…” you took a deep breath, trying to steel your nerves. “Have you ever heard of, uh… roleplay?”
He gave you a knowing smirk, leaning closer. “Yeah..?”
“Um. Well, I was thinking, maybe we could try it?”
He kissed you again, sweet and gentle. “Sounds fun. What’d you have in mind?”
