the fact that emily gwen lives in poverty while i can walk into target and buy unauthorized reproductions of their work is fucking disgusting frankly. corporations deserve to be hanged en masse but until we can do that for the love of g-d PLEASE keep queer money in the queer community. buy directly from queer artisans like emily, make your own pride merch if you have to, but we need to stop giving our money to rainbow capitalists who are literally, openly stealing from us already. i love target's pride section but i would rather spend $75 on a handmade flag someone actually sat and sewed out of real strips of coloured fabric so they could pay rent than $5 on a strip of screen-printed polyester that nobody got compensated for making at all.

emily gwen (the designer of the lesbian flag we all know and love today) is currently dealing with homelessness and suffering financially.
they’ve been talking about this situation for a few months now and it makes me really upset that they’re still struggling. while shitty corporations that already make millions profit off of lesbian (and other pride) flag designs and products, emily gets no credit for it and makes nothing off of the success. in reality all that money should be going to them.

In case you didn't know, Emily Gwen — the creator of the 'sunset' lesbian flag — is mspec lesbian exclusionary. This isn't a call to stop using the flag; I hate flag discourse, and believe that if you like and feel represented by a flag, you should use it. However, I felt it necessary to make this post, so I did.

you can't claim emily gwen is antiblack for saying the 'd' slur and attempt to create yet another lesbian flag just to spite her when you can't even be subtle about how much of a fucking lie that is.
i have never seen a credible, historically-accurate source claiming dyke is more of a racially targeted slur than a literal LESBIAN (generally speaking here) SLUR that isn't a 14yo with the "because i said so" complex.
the only reasoning i've ever seen is that "bulldyke" was AAVE once a long time ago. i don't even know if that's true, but if it is, that doesn't affirm your wish for it to automatically fucking invalidate its entire MAIN history as a slur towards lesbians and bi women. that's not how material reality fucking works. "oh well black women used to say it in their culture once, which means it's not actually functionally a slur and doesn't really affect non-black lesbians in any way except for when i want to gatekeep white & bi wlw & from saying it" - do you know how goddamn ridiculous and ignorant you sound???????? all of that goes without mentioning so far that this has NEVER been brought up before early 2021 or so, not consistently at least, and i've been keeping up with the community well before that. remember that the "bi women reclaiming dyke" discourse has been up for debate for fucking ever since lesbian separatism happened.
this comes from the damaging idea that black people cannot ever be wrong or fairly criticized on the basis of being black and it leads to shit like this. because no one questions what one individual has to say on the topic, the lie spreads and becomes the generally accepted rhetoric.
performative social justice twitter is gonna be an absolute detriment to how people are allowed to live their lives online unless they grow the hell up soon, honestly!!

Lesbian flag, by Emily Gwen:
Also known as the "Sunset lesbian flag". I chose to only post the simplified five-striped version, the one that's most commonly in use.
Meaning of Lesbian:
The simpler definition of lesbian is a woman who is attracted to other women.
Another definition is a non-man attracted to non-men; cue to that, some non-binary people who are attracted to women may use the term lesbian for themselves, and some lesbians also include non-binary people in their range of potential attraction.
(Note: it is best not to force this label on all non-binary people who are attracted to women, but only on those who identify that way, as some might be uncomfortable with a term that has such a heavily feminine connotation to most people.
Other terms exist to describe attraction to women that are purposefully non-gendered, which I'll get to in another post.)
Some useful lesbian terminology:
Gay woman: another way some women who are attracted to women may call themselves.
Female homosexual: a very scientific term to refer to lesbians. Best not to use in everyday conversation, as it's quite medicalizing.
*slur ahead!*
Dyke: an offensive slur used against lesbians, especially masculine ones, to degrade them. It's been reclaimed by some lesbians, but you should absolutely not use it on anyone without their permission.
Femme lesbian: refers to a lesbian who has a feminine gender expression.
Butch lesbian: refers to a lesbian who has a masculine gender expression.
Note: not all lesbians fit into one of these two categories! Also, not all lesbian couples must be comprised of a butch and a femme.
Even then, it is wrong to assume that in a butch-femme lesbian couple, the butch is "the man in the relationship". There is no such thing; neither of them are men!
Butches have notably been marginalized within the lesbian community itself a lot, starting from the creation of the "lipstick lesbian" Pride flag, which only represented femmes.
That's how the orange-pink flag came to be: the dark orange stripe specifically stand for gender nonconforming lesbians.
