i can't get my mind off of kaeya's hangout. kaeya's unending thoughtfulness and kindness. kaeya thinking of everyone from back home while he was away, missing them and going out of his way to get all of them personalized gifts. kaeya missing his family and them missing him even more. kaeya directly quoting shakespeare and thus pleasing my classic lit enthusiast self. adelinde answering the long debated question of which ragnvindr sibling was a little menace and which was the one following said menace in every step (turns out i was right amongst many who thought the same). kaeya most certainly knowing of venti's identity and venti struggling to keep his act up around him. kaeya getting albedo and klee matching gifts, a set, further emphasizing their great found family bond and his own belonging to it. crepus indulging in kaeya's shenanigans and making him his own semi-alcoholic drink as a treat. kaeya playing all the characters (the bandit, the prince...) without needing to stay in character, for it is he himself that speaks from them. adelinde knowing exactly how kaeya likes his food. kaeya - unable to get diluc's name out of his mouth - alberich. my personal headcanon of kaeya being fond of birds (enjoying birdwatching and singing to them) proving to be true. diona wanting to curse every drunkard with anemo archon's wrath not knowing that her beloved archon is a drunkard himself. kaeya's endearing and genuine love for people and being around them. the foreshadowing for kaeya's own story in the play he acted in and him admitting it resonates with him deeply, thus explaining why he knows it by heart. kaeya canonically embodying his nickname 'prince charming' and serving as an eye candy for many. kaeya's wish to rid himself of the shackles of fate, to rise above it and challenge his destiny. kaeya proudly stating his connection to diluc and crepus, without batting an eye. adelinde reminding him that he has always been one of their own, and that he always shall be. kaeya dancing the night away in a land far from home and having genuine fun. hoyoverse giving us a jeanlisa, kaebedo and kaejean moment all in the same scene. kaeya's and klee's shared childlike wonder and mutual understanding. kaeya revealing the secret behind the coin he constantly plays with. diluc memorizing every lie and excuse of kaeya's that he uses to spend time and indulge in pleasure in his rightful home. kaeya subtly implying that he only acts part-time currently (if you understand what i'm hinting at). the ending 'the grapes of warmth' being a reference to steinbeck's 'the grapes of wrath', once again pleasing my nerdy ass. diluc being protective over his staff and dawn winery family. kaeya being a typical younger sibling and taking every chance to tease the older one. venti sneezing around diona. klee's misunderstanding of the events surrounding kaeya making the situation twice as wholesome. kaeya, once more, doing everything in his power to help jean and make her work life easier. kaeya knowing the schedule of the winery staff members and diluc despite not being around as much. diluc willing to openly display another one of kaeya's gifts inside the winery. adelinde serving us a ragbros childhood story along with a nice, home-cooked meal each time we meet her. kaeya being a beloved son not only to his adoptive father, but to many. diluc's staff trying to cover for his darknight hero vigilante persona as if kaeya doesn't know about it. kaeya helping out the people in need, out of the good of his heart, no questions asked and not needing anything in return. the ragbros nation predicting plenty of scenarios, one of them being grape picking that, as it turns out, kaeya indeed participated in. venti writing kaeya a personalized poem, once again accepting him as a child of mondstadt.

As a servant of the winery, you were required to keep up appearances. It was necessary when representing the Ragnvindr name after all. Adeline was especially strict when it comes to an out-of-place tie or a wrinkled skirt.

Tonight was no different; master Diluc was holding a gala, displaying the newest collection of wine. Your fellow maids had already left to help serve the influx of guests, but you lingered just outside the main hall, struggling to fix your headband.

You almost didn't notice Elzer calling your name.

"(Name)? (Name), the other maids are looking for you."

You look up to see the butler holding a tray of champagne glasses, upon seeing your struggle, he carefully places the tray on a console table.

"May I?" He reaches up with gloved hands, gesturing to your head piece. You nod as he adjusts the hairs out of place, tying the intricate lace with the proficiency of a trained butler. All the while you stare up at him. He wonders if you could notice the pink dusting his cheeks.

Once he's done, his hands linger as they fall to your cheek, brushing an unnoticed strand away.

"You're looking presentable now." He says softly, face much too close to yours. His hand stays on your cheek and you briefly wonder why isn't he pulling away.

"Just presentable?" You inquire back.

". . .More than presentable." He pauses, then adds, "I fear you might outshine the lavishly dressed nobles in the main hall."

Your breath hitches, his eyes never leaving yours. There's a thumping in your heart from such a comment. "Elzer?"

He leans in a bit closer, the hand on your cheek pulling you in and–

"I hate to break the moment but there are guests without champagne glasses waiting by the door." A gruff voice cuts through. Diluc crosses his arms at the other end of the hall, an eyebrow raised.

"Master Diluc! My apologies, we–"

"Young Master, I was just about to–"

You start in unison but Diluc only waves you off, "You both have the day off tomorrow, isn't that right? Enjoy all the time then but not when there are visitors to attend to." He scolds and you both nod.

The redhead makes his way back to the main hall, but before that he turns once again, "Or, y'know, there's always time later tonight once all the guests are gone. Do enjoy yourselves." A ghost of a smirk crosses his face as you both turn as red as your master's hair.

– A Y A T O .

Traditional Inazuman clothing were difficult to put on alone, especially the decorated ones. It's not easy to arrange layer after layer with all their ribbons and knots.

So please forgive your amateurish abilities when the knot behind your back started to fall apart, loosening the entire wardrobe along with it in the middle of a teahouse gathering.

It was Ayato who immediately notices your quiet distress, pulling you aside behind one of the screen doors before anyone notices.

"I thought I secured it." You whine, hands on your face to hide the slight embarrassment. He only chuckles, turning you around to witness your disaster of a so-called-'secured knot'.

"You tied it like a shoelace." He says it a matter-of-factly, voice stuck between amusement and disbelief, unsure if he wanted to laugh at your misfortune or question how you thought this could ever be secure.

"Just please tie it properly for me. Archons forbid anyone finds us here and assumes– erm..."

He smirks, "Assumes what, exactly?"

"You know what." You feel him handling the ties on your back.

"It's not as if it would be a bad assumption."

You huff, "It would be bad for a bachelor to be caught up in a scandal."

He laughs, it's lithe and almost melodic sounding. "What an overreaction, I'm merely tying some knots."

You pout at his disagreement, wanting to justify yourself: "This is the work of the house-help, not the Yashiro Commissioner. Although if you enjoy it so much, you could do it for your future spouse everyday."

"I wouldn't have to do it everyday if you learned how to do it on your own." He talks back, almost nonchalantly, a habit– and you swiftly turn to face him.

"What?"

". . . what?" He repeats, raising an eyebrow.

"You said. . . " Your eyes narrow at him in confusion. The realization, the implication, settles in his mind slowly.

"Ah. . . " Lavender eyes stray away from yours, seemingly interested on the wall beside you, "I misspoke."

"I said your future spouse." You try to bite back the teasing smile on your lips, a hidden laugh on the tip of your throat, "You didn't even hesitate to say–"

"I said I misspoke!" He turns his back on you but you see the flush reaching his ears, tinting them pink.

You muffle a laugh, "Should I learn how to tie knots, Ayato dearest?~ Or should I leave that up to you?"

He groans, a hand hiding his face, "We should go back to the party. People would start assuming things." The screens slide open as he briskly walks out, leaving you to call out to him in glee.

"People would assume what, Ayato!"

– Z H O N G L I .

"I wonder what I would look like with red eyeliner." You mutter, observing the way his hand -steady as rock- brushed the signature red eyeliner on the edges of his eye.

"Would you like to know?" He smiles, slipping his free hand to cup your chin and pull you close. Your breath hitches.

"Don't move now," he says, voice low, "We don't want it to smudge." You almost nodded, but his fingers kept your chin locked and close to his.

A soft brush caresses the underside of your eye, moving to the corner and flickering gently to form a wing.

"Is... is it done now?" You ask. He doesn't respond, instead, he smiles and gently moves your face to the side.

"The other eye as well, darling."

— D I L U C .

Kameras weren't that known outside of Fontaine, but because of privilege and wealth, Diluc had managed to get the latest prototype with ease. The mechanical device looked interesting to you, the fact that it could produce an image even faster than any painter sounded magical.

So when Diluc suggested you both take a "photo" together, you were excited to say the least and wanted everything to be perfect.

"Do I look all right?" You ask, turning to him as you pat your clothes down. He glances you over and you feel yourself shying away from his gaze. It's a little strange to have the aloof man act attentive over appearances.

"There's rice on your– no, not there, over–" He pauses, glancing at you, almost hesitant before muttering an "I'll do it."

A gloved hand reaches out to your hair, brushing it away with his fingers. It's strange to see him so close to you when the gentleman usually keeps his distance.

"There."

He takes a step back. You exhale a breath you didn't know you were holding.

"Ah, is it good now?" You ask.

"Yes." He nods and stands stiffly in front of the kamera, waiting for you to take your own place. Later on, you'd wonder why Diluc would refuse to show you the produced image, huffing how "it didn't turn out right. we can have another one taken next time.", unknowing of how it perfectly captured the blush on his cheeks and the way his eyes were not on the lens, but on you.

note // thinking of shy ayato, i think it still fits his character well. he could be teasing most of the time but catching him off guard would be cute too. and i hope you like elzer's part!! it's been in my drafts for so long (months, actually) that im glad to finally post this. lemme know what you think of short works like this!

I have been unable to get the idea of baby Kaeya sneaking off to Sumeru without telling anyone out of my head

Baby Kaeya: I have successfully snuck into Sumeru in a merchant convoy. I may have left without saying goodbye, but I’m sure the Ragnvindrs will not mind. After all, surely they don’t see me as their actual family. They might raise a fuss and be in agony if Diluc were to disappear, but not for me.

Meanwhile......

Crepus, on his 8th bottle: How on earth have I managed to lose an entire child?? Did he get kidnapped? Did he run away? Is he alive? Is he safe? I’m going to have a breakdown holy shit. I have failed as a father. Elzer, have the knights gotten back about their search of the area? Or the private squad I hired?

Elzer: I’m afraid they have found nothing...but look on the bright side! At least we haven’t lost Diluc...

Adeline, literally physically restraining Diluc to stop him from running off to search for Kaeya: Yet. We have not lost Diluc YET.

Merchant guy: Hey, uh, guys?

Merchant lady: Yeah?

Merchant guy: Can somebody read this handwriting? I think whoever wrote this must have been in a hurry or something. And are those...tear stains?

Merchant lady: Sure...hm looks like the boss’s son is missing....

Merchant guy: Huh. Well we guarded the goods pretty well but let’s check just to make sure.

Merchant lady: *Opens up the goods to find Kaeya wedged between 2 crates* Oh we’re so fired.

Kaeya: In your defense, it’s only been a few days. One time I hid from...something for a week. And it was far more perceptive than you are, so you can hardly be blamed for missing me for only a few days. It was a fun challenge, but I was very hungry afterwards. By the way, do you have some water? I did not want to risk revealing myself, so I have not moved from this spot since we left.

Merchant guy: We’re not fired...we’re dead.

Crepus, sprinting to Sumeru: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Merchant guy: So...while we wait for your dad, why did you come here anyways? I’m sure we could do something fun.

Kaeya: Hmmm, no. You should not look into why I came here. That would be bad, for me and for you.

Merchant lady, whispering to merchant guy: Hey, um, what the fuck does that mean?

Merchant guy, whispering to merchant lady: The boss said his new kid was kinda odd, but this wasn’t what I was expecting.

Crepus: KAEYA! OH THANK GOODNESS YOU ARE OK!

Kaeya: Hello Master Crepus. I hope I didn’t cause too much-

Crepus: WHY ON TEYVAT WOULD YOU JUST RUN AWAY? DID YOU JUST WANT TO GO TO SUMERU TO SEE THE RAINFORESTS OR SOMETHING?

Kaeya: ...Sure. I read about it in a book and thought it looked cool. I wanted to see it, and so I left.

Crepus: *sigh* Kaeya, next time you want to take a vacation somewhere, please just tell us. You ARE grounded for a month since you broke a very big rule, but afterwards I’ll see about arranging a trip to Sumeru for us.

Kaeya: Crossing Teyvat to find me, grounding me, and arranging trips around my preferences? Why are you treating me so similarly to how you treat Diluc?

Crepus: Because you are both my sons. Why on earth would I treat you any differently?

Kaeya, forming the first healthy relationship with an adult in his entire life and realizing that he has grown attached to the very family he was left to spy on then eventually betray: Oh. This...I feel weird. Bad-weird and good-weird.

Crepus: Well, you probably feel weird because you were LODGED BETWEEN TWO CRATES FOR 4 DAYS STRAIGHT? You’re going to give me a heart attack one day, I swear. Now we’re going back to Mondstadt right now, and you’re grounded starting the day after we get back. I highly doubt Adelinde and Diluc will be able to restrain themselves from fawning over you, they’ve been a mess.

Kaeya, realizing that now only has he grown attached to his new family, but they have grown incredibly attached to him: Oh...oh no.

Hc that in the genshin modern AU Diluc is one of those cat-moms who shoves pictures of their cat in people's faces but with his hawk. Like he'll shove bird pictures into Elzer's face and be like "isn't she adorable? Look at how cute she is!" and just gush about her to him and Elzer's standing there like "yes master Diluc I know I see her every day, I clean her cage I know how cute she is" but unbeknownst to him Diluc has 20 more pictures to show Elzer. He does the same with Adeline except she joins in with him and starts gushing about her as well. He only ever shows pictures to people he's really close to and really trusts but... the people who get there are bombarded with an endless wave of bird pictures

I have... an idea. A theory?

Is it possible that Diluc may not have kicked Kaeya out at all? Or at least, not completely? If Kaeya weren't doing this as a form of self-punishment, then Kaeya may have gaslit himself on the idea that he was kicked out.

Several EN Kaeya dialogue had me confused for a while now (as well as odd dialogue or text boxes by EN Diluc, Elzer, and Adelinde)

For one, Diluc seemed genuinely confused by the "throw me out like trash" comment from Kaeya, and Diluc had no retort to Kaeya saying Dawn Winery is his home too ( in fact, Diluc had no qualms on letting Kaeya stay there for weeks back when Diluc was out on a fatui hunting spree).

It's weird for someone who supposedly kicked the other out act like that - all confused and silent. Usually, there would at least be a vocal protest.

Then we have Elzer and Adelinde.

Have you all noticed that Adelinde only addresses Kaeya as "Sir Kaeya" when they are discussing together? Adelinde straight up calls him "Master Kaeya" in front of Diluc. Elzer, in a letter to Diluc, also showed him repeatedly addressing Kaeya as "Master Kaeya". Does this mean that only Kaeya requested on his own volition to no longer be addressed as master by the staff? Diluc is clearly fine with it. With how great of a maid Adelinde is, it must be such a rare occasion to call Kaeya as a "sir" for her to often accidentally call him as master instead (at least once every time we hear her, she makes this error)

Could it be possible that Kaeya decided to put that distance himself? Clearly Kaeya had no qualms on lying about his eye to Diluc for a while (making Diluc think he was blinded). Who's to say that he didn't make the staff think that he was no longer allowed to stay at Dawn Winery (which would make leaving the place easier for him).

And the more tragic one, being that he may have gaslit himself to the idea of being kicked out, also sounds possible... especially if we think that he may currently be tricking himself that he has no real mission or true purpose to the Khaenri'ahn plot (or that he tricked himself for the longest time that he has a mission).

The others are probably just letting Kaeya continue to do so because calling him out on it might make him lash out or start getting defensive.

This actually paints a very different picture...
