Badhaai Do omg. I loved it but boy did it hit home. I’m Nigerian, not Indian but the cultures are really similar(the scenes with the meddling aunties, the colourism, how young adults are treated in the family, even the buildings lol)and watching everything unfold had me holding my breath while rejoicing the quieter, tender gay moments. I went into it with no spoilers, thinking it would be a cheesy rom com(I wanted a little more joy/moments from the lesbian relationship for sure)and sure there were hints of that but it was definitely more of a drama and the second half was quite serious. After the reveal, I was scared as hell at how things would play out but it worked out in the best way and I’m so glad they went with that ending. The pride scene though. I teared up through their families but those scenes always get me and this felt way too real. I wish people who complained about closeted gays would watch more stuff like this and try to get it tbh.
Oh, that's so interesting, how cultures that are so physically distant can be so similar in certain ways. And I bet there are probably some LatAm places we'd find familiar too. I'm glad this was able to resonate with you, then!
Yeah, it wasn't as comedic as I'd expected even from the trailer since I did have some preconceptions but while it had a lot of jokes it was definitely more wistful and dramatic too. The way they treated their home life, I started to get nervous even before the reveal, because of the sleeping arrangements and the family visiting, since things seemed going fairly well for them with too much of the movie still left, and of course then the other shoe fell.
I LOVED the pride scene and watched it so many times and even now have the song in my playlist. It was one of those moments that becomes larger than the movie or fictional characters and more about the real people making progress and winning the ability to even have a movie like this made.
The ending was lovely, and they almost got me with that fakeout, lol, but I really loved how it ended on a fully hopeful, happy note. Yay for them and us!
You know, unfortunately, I feel like if people can't already put themselves in the place of closeted characters closer to home and understand their decisions as what works for them, this isn't really gonna help much? Because if they have to qualify under what circumstances a person deserves sympathy, that's already on the wrong foot.
But anyway, heh, not to be too much of a downer, for sure, I really enjoyed it, though as you said, wouldn't have mined more of a romcom vibe. I feel like of these three movies so far, ELKDTAL, Badhaai Do, and Maja Ma, none have yet fully leaned into the epic romance Bollywood is known for, but you can see the good intentions and the attempts to get closer all the time.

Currently watching elkdtal and when sweety said she can't let her dad be the laughing stock of moga , I felt it . This is the truth , this movie gets it . Because you have these amazing parents who love you and sacrifice everything in their life for you to get the best life and best education and the most reputable career , who have given up their happiness and luxuries for you , and you just can't bring yourself to live the life you want , the life that could bring shame to your family . You're just so scared about what the society will think about your family and the values they taught you when you live an out and proud life . Like , I know our parents won't be a 100% accepting of us , but at times more than what they think the thing that keeps us , or at least me , from coming out is how my parents and their parenting will be perceived by my extended family and the times they'd have to bow their heads when talking about me and my life choices .

what post ru talking about
there was one under the gulshan devaiah tag. day ruined instantly
but also I was referencing just this trend I've seen of people starting off their posts/opinions about the movie with "it wasn't perfect, but-" or "It had its Several Flaws, but-" which is. fair. and all.
But why does literally the rest of bollywood not get the same treatment, yknow? Why is Indian queer content held to impossible standards, not even just queer content.
And this is not me making concessions for shit movies just because they're Woke™. This is about movies that actually delivered. Like badhaai do.
People who genuinely disliked it are literally so free to do so (I disagree, but to each their own).
But it seems to me like even the people who did like it are kinda being guilt tripped into saying it lowkey sucked. Which is. :/
Now I could've just encountered a disproportionately high number of people who said something along these lines. I'm probably generalising too much.
That being said
I can say with utter confidence that it was better than SO many Hollywood movies/Korean media out there.
And yet, there's such a weird system of internalised racism in place from growing up on an annoyingly fucking US/eurocentric internet that. We literally hesitate to shamelessly hype our own movies. Even the ones that have actually done well and have done right by the queer community.
Is that not tragic?
It's like we start off on this assumption that Bollywood = Terrible and then fight tooth and nail to hold onto that entirely baseless idea, just for the sake of.
What?
Ego?
Being "Not Like Other Indians I'm More Woke Because I Hate Bollywood?"
What is it?
Sorry about the rant. I'm just really sensitive about this because, hell man our movie industries get shit on and mocked by nondesis enough without us adding to it.
It's pretty much a given that movies featuring sensitive topics like this one will NOT be perfect. It doesn't have to be said unless it's a legitimate review- I've seen personal posts on here freaking out about badhaai do that are so self effacing it hurt my heart.
So. Annoying preachy PSA to everyone: next time you talk about queer content in Indian media, and the first words out of your mouth are something along the lines of "idk it wasn't great but personally I liked it idk" when you're more than allowed to say "it was FUCKING GREAT ACTUALLY."
Maybe ask yourself where it's coming from.
We're allowed to be proud of our own culture. I promise.

Every time there’s a show or movie with a female character who’s meant to have repressed her emotions and one of the biggest complaints against her is that her acting is bad I know without a doubt that the actress did a fantastic job and portrayed exactly what she was meant to

stop right there and answer these questions: 1) what's your guilty pleasure? 2) something you can watch over and over again without getting tired of it 3) a celebrity you would marry in a heartbeat and why him/her 4) if you could be any non human character from a movie, game, tv show, etc, what or who would it be? PASS THIS ON TO YOUR FAVORITE MUTUALS ily
1) what's your guilty pleasure?
I can’t really answer this, because I like what I like. And I don’t understand feeling guilty about things that bring you joy.
2) something you can watch over and over again without getting tired of it
Reba, SVU, The Nanny, ELKDTAL, Yes Boss, Bol Radha Bol, Grease...
3) a celebrity you would marry in a heartbeat and why him/her
Most of my faves are married... And I also don’t actually want to get married so...
4) if you could be any non human character from a movie, game, tv show, etc, what or who would it be?
hmm... maybe a fairy? Oooo or a dragon? Wait.. I can be both!!! I’d be Maleficent!!

Femslash Tag
I was tagged by the wonderful @purpleyin, thank you for tagging me friend!
1. Sweety Chaudhary x Kuhu (Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga)
Tumblr media
Did y’all really think this would happen without Kuhu and Sweety being my top ship? Still salty that people let this movie flop, because it is so fucking important that it was able to have been made, honestly your loss.
2. Elena Alvarez x Syd (One Day At A Time)
Tumblr media
They’re just two little nerds in love who keep doing all this cute shit for each other, and like, they’re kinda’ the most realistic/relatable ship from this list and I wish I had been able to have a ship like this on-screen when I was younger.
3. Anissa Pierce x Grace Choi // ThunderGrace (Black Lightning)
Tumblr media
Of course the world’s best power couple is going to be on this list, don’t @ me on this.
4. Keelin x Freya // Freelin (The Originals)
Tumblr media
The only LGBT ship from this wretched universe to truly make it. They were endgame without having to die together (Noralise) or finding each other in the afterlife (JoshxAiden). I genuinely still can’t believe that they were able to get married and like, allude to the fact that they’re gonna have kids and like, they just get to live happily ever after and that just makes me really emotional.
5. Amaya Jiwe x Zari Tomaz // Amari (Legends of Tomorrow)
Tumblr media
I WAS TRYING TO FIND THE ICONIC ‘TOTEMS LIGHT UP CUZ THEY’RE SOULMATES’ GIF, BUT THIS WAS THE CLOSEST I COULD GET TO IT!!! Look, I know that Amari isn’t ‘canon’ but they are to me, just like, the way their dynamic was written I feel like can easily be seen as romantic.
6. Sara Lance x Ava Sharpe // Avalance (Legends of Tomorrow)
Tumblr media
No shit true love’s kiss is gonna’ be on here. I LOVED Avalance from the get-go, like, the whole time they were leading up to the hiatus in Season 3, I was literally just chanting ‘oh they’re gonna’ get together aren’t they? like they better, but they are’ in my head until they got some proper content.
7. Kelly x Alex // Dansen (Supergirl)
Tumblr media
Dansen is cute as fuck and y’all need to stop sleeping on them.
8. Earth 2 Dinah Laurel Lance x Dinah Drake // DinahSiren // Dinah^2 (The Canary Show)
Tumblr media
Listen, Dinah and Laurel’s development from enemies to frenemies to friends to literally being married is iconic and literally my favourite trope in the history of tropes. They will get together, I’m putting it out into the universe, so they will happen.
9. Alice x Robin // MadArcher (Once Upon A Time)
Tumblr media
MadArcher is one of my more underrated ships just because I ship them, but I never actually ended up getting into the fandom or anything. I just loved them together, I thought they were really good, their meet-cute was a lot like Snowing’s which was definitely a pleasant surprise. I wish we could’ve gotten another season of them, OUAT Season 7 was unworthy of the slander that it received and I will die screeching about it.
10. Nora Hildegard x Mary Louise // Noralise (The Vampire Diaries)
Tumblr media
Noralise is yet another one of my more underrated ships because they were handled so poorly by the writer on TVD. The actresses actually had chemistry, and I was super excited about their narrative because I genuinely believe that there was so much to work with there, and they just had unnecessary drama and got killed off.
Honorary Mention:
11. Bonnie Bennett x Rebekah Mikaelson // Bonbekah (The Vampire Diaries)
Tumblr media
Um, so this is the crackiest of crack ships cuz these two never even had a single fucking scene together, but Bonbekah could’ve been great and I will forever stand by that.
I literally can’t think of anyone to tag at the moment, so if this shows up on your dash, go for it.

I don't think I'll ever get used to LGBT content in Indian media.
Each time we get more I feel the same sort of awe and joy, with the exact same intensity. The exact same overwhelming disbelief that change is actually happening. In my lifetime.
And I get a front row seat
