Elena Gilbert: Mikaelson Brothers
Obviously, this would be my free choice. Right?
In many ways, Elijah and Klaus are versions of Stefan and Damon. With their introduction, I had really hoped for legitimate romances or at least potential between either (or both) and Elena. It would have been difficult to navigate, but fun to see her grow up from these two high school lovers to more mature, intense loves as an adult.
The way Elijah looks at her, he values her opinion and more so, her opinion of him. And when she has her humanity off and they meet in the gazebo and he kisses her. I can't be convinced that he didn't know it was her before the kiss and he did it anyway because it was his opportunity to do what he'd been wanting to do since he met her. I mean, he had to smell her like that to know she was human? suuuure. Then, she recites his letter back to him. She cares too, about what he thinks of her.
Klaus is more complicated. He absolutely resents Katherine, possibly even Tatia given that she seemed to favor Elijah over him. And in spite of all that built up hatred and resentment to Petrova doppelgangers, he still fucking can't help touch Elena. It comes out in violence as so much with him does, but he can't help himself around her. And then he kills her aunt even though she willingly sacrifices herself to him. I think, in part to punish her for the "sins" of her predecessors, because she is more brave than he's ever been and he hates her for it, and to lash out at her because even after everything he's still interested/attracted to her.
