After going through the tags for the Sandman series, there is some unfortunately unsurprising racism surrounding the casting of Death as a black woman instead of a white woman, and the racists are pointing to the comics for "accuracy".

I have read the entire comic series more times than I can count, but a single reading would inform you that all of the Endless are shapeshifters that appear however they think is most fitting for the time and place. Death and Dream ARE Black in the comics sometimes. Sometimes they are Asian, or aliens, or cats and it's implied they could be sentient crystals or balls of light if that's the reality they're in. Depends. Sometimes you can't even tell who Delirium is until she speaks and you see her rainbow speech bubble because her form is so loose. They are literally personifications of ideas.

All that being said, it doesn't matter anyway because there is literally nothing lost and actually a lot gained because Kirby Howell-Baptiste is (pardon the pun) KILLING it as Death
