I disagree with Narrator in a very fundamental and philosophical level, but you know, even if I agreed 100% with his worldview and the reality he wants to bring about, I’d still think he’s wrong for taking matters into his own hands and changing THE VERY FABRIC OF REALITY affecting people in the entire universe, simply because HE thinks he knows what best for the world.

Like– that’s why I find him so fascinating, it’s not only the fear of death or disgust towards the very concept of change (tho that is very funny and interesting in its own right), but the utter arrogance to champion himself Savior of the World without EVER considering that maybe– just maybe, people might not agree with what he plans to do.

Like. Hubris indeed, and he even has the gall to say, “you can still do what you must and kill her” when we call him out on it. Like. Wow. I want to study this guy under a microscope.

ok so my very first time playing the game ever, I got the Stranger for my first princess, bc I hate being told what to do and have strong opinions on ethics and this motherfucker's shady so yeah I trek into the freaking woods screw you not committing murder

But looking back, knowing everything about the Echo and the Long Quiet and the Shifting Mound, this is the absolute funniest thing possible.

Like. Just IMAGINE. Your world is about to end. Your village is dying. Through what I imagine must have been intense and meticulous work, you manage to turn change and permanence themselves into specifically crafted beings so that you can kill an abstract concept with an abstract concept. you dedicate your life to it. hell, you even end your life for it. and then a shard of you sits in wait to instruct your newly born creation on how to save the world.

And then the VERY FIRST THING THAT THIS FUCKING GOD THAT YOU CREATED DOES is to call you emotionally manipulative and lie about knowing where they're going and just generally prove to be an incompetent spiteful idiot and then they just TREK INTO THE WOODS AND AWAY FROM THEIR RESPONSIBILITIES, BECAUSE THEY'RE HAVING A REBELLIOUS PHASE

right so you guys ever think about the spectre telling the narrator that hes more similar to her than to a person?

what "her" was she referring to? the fragment we call the spectre? the way he can only be perceived, not perceive himself? the ghost of him, the ghost of her? all of her?

im just. thinking. i always think about spectre. she has. a lot to say that i think is overlooked in favor of more common favorite routes like moment of clarity and the tower, but shes one of my favorites, and shes one of the only ones who SEES the narrator, save for wraith, who is. also her. or nightmare. and she says that hes not really a person. like her.

of course, that makes sense, we think shes a ghost and dead, so she is. but him. is the echo a ghost in the classical sense? is that what she meant? or are there layers?

she says he's not really like a person. what is a person to her? is she comparing the narrator to the "shards of broken glass on the floor" are her interactions with us and the voices the only "person" she knows?

i love love love when this game separates the narrator from us and our voices. i love it so much i think about it daily. props to tower for "layer of grime" that fucks so hard.

A question: do you think the Voices would, given time, change to be a calmer version of themselves in a A New Dawn situation? Like, even as the ending is playing, Voices like Paranoid and Hunted clearly cherish the The Long Quiet's decision (Paranoid going as far as saying that everything that made existing so horrible to him is finally over :/), showing they are already starting to calm down from their perpetual state of fear and over-vigilance, which are kinda important traits for them to still be what they are. Maybe as this new world without bloodshed sets in and there's nothing to justify them being so exaggerated, they would eventually mollify into, I dunno... Voice of the Anxious (Paranoid), Voice of the Attentive (Hunted), Voice of the Placid (Cold), Voice of the Meek (Broken), Voice of the Sly (Opportunist), etc etc..

I'M SORRY THIS TOOK ME SO LONG TO ANSWER, my brain has been picking at it and trying to put together words because all I've been able to come up with since I saw it is:

So, yes!! Yes, I love this concept. I made a post about things I found on the Reddit AMA a little over four months ago, and one of the things I went a little nuts over there was that an early concept for the voices was that, instead of getting more voices the more chapters you went through, the voice you got would change -- first for the worse, then for the better.

So I definitely love the idea of the voices shifting and becoming new versions of themselves once they leave the Construct, no matter what the circumstances are! Usually for clarity I write them with the same names, but I think especially in the New and Unending Dawn endings, they might completely update. In the "positive" one, becoming better versions of themselves... in the Everyone Hates You ending, becoming worse. (Though I can't stand unhappy endings personally so I like them improving after that bout of being worse, heh!) (Also I feel like even in the "positive" one, Smitten would get worse before he got better. :< Poor guy's deep in mourning again!)

I love your idea of them mollifying, but I also love the idea of them becoming more positive iterations of themselves. Paranoid could be Voice of the Anxious or Voice of the Cautious; Cold could be Voice of the Placid or, as Tony Howard-Arias floated, Voice of the Determined.

(Which, apropos of nothing, makes me realize just how much Cold and Stubborn might have in common...)
