BG3 has fundamentally changed me as a DM, cause every time I have to introduce a new NPC I think: "Is there a voice actor from Baldur's Gate I can parrot?"

other people: steal ideas for their TTRPG stories from books/shows/games/ect. my gremlin ass: Use the full music video i constructed in my head while listening to a song i'm currently obsessed with. And it's not cool either i built a whole campaign on the song "All eyes on me", yes the inky one, i didn't even play that game.

A couple of weeks ago, my D&D group completed a modern psionics campaign with lots of weirdness and crazy things we never thought we'd see happen in a game, like taking over ownership of several fast food restaurant chains as a vehicle to help bring down some alien invaders. I think that campaign will always be remembered for that and for the army of elves who recreated Amazon.
Tonight, we will begin retelling the original Final Fantasy game using 5th edition D&D instead of our usual go-to of Pathfinder 1st edition. I might write the sessions up, especially if there's plenty of goofiness going on.

Fellow DMs, how do you come to terms with the possibility of killing a player character when you have levels and levels of back story tie-in written out?

The thing about being a DM is sometimes your players will do something so totally unexpected that it shapes the story in a new, better way and you're left feeling so proud

Want to spice the game up? Why not try alarming your players for no real reason? Make sure to make a show out of counting the dice before you roll.

I AM RIGHT; YOU ARE WRONG – GET OVER IT I received a lot of flack because of the second segment of the 12 Jan 2024 Some Rando RPG Livestream. There are many people who think that by focusing on one aspect of a role-playing game that they are some sort of true RPG purist or better at playing RPGs than other people. Newsflash: They are not! For my rant I cited my own RPG Harmony Axes graphic and…

My current campaign is more or less a sequel to my previous one, (new characters, same homebrew world.) So obviously I'm using the same roll20 game, but my notes are so bloated now. Sometimes I'm scrolling though and then I'm like, "Who the fuck is Skee Skrumbud?"

Final Fantasy - Session 1
The world is descending into chaos. The seas rage, the wind dies, the earth decays, and the fires grow dim. Darkness threatens to enshroud the world in endless evil, but there is hope! Warriors bearing crystals arrive in the kingdom of Cornelia, just as the prophecy of Lorkhan fortold! Will they be the ones to drive back the darkness and restore life into the world? It's an exciting day as adventure awaits…somebody else. Our heroes, the player characters, happen to be in the same pub as the fabled Warriors of Light, who are busy doing parlor tricks and showing off to the amazed onlookers.
Dramatis Personae
Aelendiel of Sephiroth, an elven monk of The Three Rivers of Sephiroth (no, not that Sephiroth), on a quest from his order to experience the world and return with the wisdom gained. His "uncle," the grandmaster of that order, took him in after his parents were killed. The order is rather brutal, almost cultish.
Quara Augusto, a human bard (aka the red mage), the youngest daughter of Duke Augusto of Port Cornelia. Her five brothers and four sisters have a bright future ahead of them in the courts of Cornelia and beyond; she will find her future in song and fashion.
Glorianna Thournedaille, a human sorcerer (aka the black mage), the youngest daughter of a distant noble family. Her three older brothers are referred to as the heir, the spare, and the clergyman. She has the gift of wild magic, which her family disapproves of. As she is of little value to them politically, they were glad to let her run off to pursue her gifts…far, far away from them.
Siobahn Beatha, a human cleric of Cosmos (aka the white mage), a red-headed Irish-like woman literally born and raised in a barn. Her family successfully runs a farm near Port Cornelia. She was sent to the temple when it became clear she had a connection with the divine.
Tornan Fang, a dwarven fighter who serves as a sergeant in the king's army. He's a simple dwarf and likes it that way.
The Warriors Appear in Port Cornelia
True to prophecy, the Warriors of Light appeared in Port Cornelia to stay the night before marching to Castle Cornelia to present themselves to the king. The townsfolk are amazed at the stunning, well-dressed, clearly talented warriors. Their red mage uses prestidigitations to make hundreds of lit crystals dance around the pub, while their fighter and monk make shows of strength in arm wrestling, the mages discuss philosophy, and the thief "attempts" to steal money from the barkeep.
However, most of the PCs are unimpressed. Quara steals the red mage's performance by inserting her own music, causing his crystal display to fall to the floor. Aelendiel confronts the monk on his poor, sloppy form. Glorianna grabs a few crystal shards and determines that they are actually shards of glass. Siobahn tries to pray with the white mage, but the white mage is rather noncommittal. Fed up with having their fun snubbed, the Warriors pack up and leave the pub. Fed up with the PCs ruining an otherwise fun night, the locals toss that party out.
The PCs express their disgust at the charlatan Warriors, who have already walked down the street to the city gates and left. As they were about to disperse to go about their own lives, the town alarm sounded and the gates closed! There would be some excitement tonight after all. The PCs approach the closed gates to see that a band of goblins threatened the city. Standing between them and the city were the Warriors of Light. The Warriors attempted to instill fear into their foes through displays of might and declarations of their fate as Warriors.
The goblins started cutting them down.
While the PCs were still unimpressed, they were still good people at heart and could not stand to see the Warriors in peril. Tornan, being part of the city guard, knows the secret door to get past the gate. They rushed to the Warriors' aid and quickly dispatched the goblin menace, but they were too late: the Warriors had been slain. At least they left behind some loot!
Well, sort of. All their shiny armor and weapons were little more than costumes. They really were charlatans, but not entirely. Glorianna searched the bag of crystals and confirmed that they were all shards of glass, except for a few small bits at the bottom. She retrieved them. There were five in all, each with a dim light and emanating a sliver of power.
When each PC took a crystal, a vision flashed before them. The most beautiful woman appeared. She reached out to them and pleaded, "Warriors of Light, you are my only hope! Please, help me!" And then she disappeared. As if to confirm the reality of their situation, a bolt of lightning flashed, illuminating Castle Cornelia in the distance. The PCs unwittingly became the Warriors of prophecy.
A goblin chieftain and his mad pony attacked the party. The fight was trivial, but they took some wounds. The howling of wolves heralded what would be next. Not wanting to fight their way through the night, the PCs gathered the bodies of the former Warriors and retreated to the city. They would head to the castle the next day. For now, the charlatans needed to be given a proper burial, and they needed to shelter for the night. Quara volunteered her family's estate.
On the next morning (after much bickering between Aelendiel and Siobahn over the latter's thick Irish accent and the former's overly rigid sense of How Things Ought To Be(tm)), the party traveled to Castle Cornelia by carriage. They arrived at the palace, where they showed their crystals as proof of their fate. The king received them and charged them with a quest to authenticate their calling: his daughter, Princess Sara, was kidnapped by their captain of the guard, Garland. Garland is considered one of the best swordsmen in the realm, but the king is confident that if they are the Warriors of prophecy, they will be able to overcome Garland and rescue his daughter.
And so, the new Warriors of Light set off to the northwest, to an abandoned temple, where they might find and confront Garland.
