Cornwall’s Random Card of the Day #352: Anger
I’m angry. ANGRY ABOUT ELVES.
Anger is an uncommon from Judgement, seen here in its Duel Decks: Venser vs Koth printing, part of a cycle of creatures whose abilities really got going if they were in your graveyard, not on the field. RnD has done a lot less of these as time went by due to the fact that it is in some decks much easier to put a card into the graveyard than put it on the field. It circumvents mana cost, for example, and we all know how often that kind of thing can bite Magic in its ass. The “control a mountain” clause is there because you might be able to just discard or mill it without ever putting any sources of red in the deck, which would circumvent the colour pie, too, which is another big no-no of Magic design.
I’m not a huge fan of these things, btw, the main reason being that they just stay in a zone which doesn’t usually matter much but still affect the zones you DO care about. I once had a match which I lost due to my opponent having a Wonder (same thing as Anger but with flying instead of haste) in their graveyard early in the game but it never really coming up until they swung with their entire team for the win. If you’ve been following this series up to now, you know that I absolutely LOATHE losing to on-board tricks, and any such tricks should definitely be in areas which Magic players have been trained to pay goddamn attention to.
On the plus side, I do like the new art in this printing, as opposed to the screaming fetus of the original.

The largest win from the first couple of batches was Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker over Lovisa Coldeyes, with 88.00%. The tightest race was Sundial of the Infinite’s defeat of Triskaidekaphobia, at 51.24%.
