In 2003, the first 51-52 episodes of the Detective Conan anime were dubbed into English by Voiceovers Unlimited for the Singapore market. This dub predates Funimation's "Case Closed" dub by a year, and features a different Singapore-based cast. Unlike Funimation's dub, this dub was more accurate, keeping the names (mostly) intact and the setting in Japan. Other notable anime dubs by Voiceovers Unlimited include the "Singapore dubs" of Yu-Gi-Oh! and One Piece.
For a while, only the opening and ending themes to this dub, which were just instrumentals of the original songs, were available on the internet, on Voiceover Unlimited's YouTube channel. In 2021, several of the dubbed episodes were uploaded onto torrent sites. These copies seem to have come from voice actor Joe Murray, who voiced Shinichi and Conan in the dub. Though the episodes were not released on home media, Murray did save a few.
More information can be found on the Lost Media Wiki.
If you look online, you can find where the videos for this dub are. I've also uploaded just the audio of the episodes onto the Internet Archive, since TMS immediately struck me down when I uploaded the videos.
Given that the voice direction and few creative liberties this dub does are...quite interesting to say the least, I've created a short sample of the "best" moments.
Some sad news to share - Writer, Director, and Actor on Robotech (an American 80s adaptation of the combined anime series Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross and Genesis Climber Mospeada) Greg Finley has passed away at the age of 76. To anime fans, he was best known in Robotech as the voice of both Captain Gloval and Commander Anatole Eli Leonard, and worked as a staff writer on the series. Outside of Robotech, he had a long career of being an on-camera actor in the 70s and 80s. Over the past 25 years, he not only wrote and recorded hundreds of news and sports reports for broadcast television, but was an active member of the Canyon Theatre Guild in Santa Clarita, CA. He and his family members produced, directed, and acted in hundreds of plays, musicals, workshops, and fundraisers for their local community.
Memorial services for Finley will be held in early Spring. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Wounded Veterans Relief Fund: https://wvrf.org/.
Friends and fans can sign his guestbook maintained at his memorial website here: http://www.forevermissed.com/greg-finley.
Oh baby.... this laugh is trash. Funimation had 1 job but I guess I got Monkey Pawed because Killer's speaking voice sounds way better in the dub now, he doesn't sound like a congested surfer anymore and his speaking voice is so much more pleasant but....the laugh is garbage. Trash in its final form. It's like they didn't even try. I dont care if I sound harsh. I don't care if I sound mean. As someone who usually loves this dub, go and listen to the fight in Japanese and tell me that this isn't a downgrade
Last year, someone on Twitter posted a clip from the (Latin American) Spanish dub of Shaman King (2001), specifically the scene from Episode 30 where the group chases down a guy who stole an Oracle Bell from Milly. And the way that dub translated the part where Ren tells Billy to drive off the cliff is so funny, he basically tells him "Do it no balls."
The account that posted the video went private, so I wanted to try and find it myself, as well as compare it to the original Japanese version, and the edited 4Kids dub.
News - Yesterday at their Otakon 2023 panel, Discotek made some announcements!
New bluray releases of previous DVD-only titles: Midnight Eye Goku, Crying Freeman, Chargeman Ken, as well as CyberSix.
A new 4k release for Street Fighter II: The Movie.
80s shoujo anime Lady Georgie will be getting an SD bluray, it's first ever English release!
And for the first time ever, all 3 of the first Digimon films will be getting a proper English release, complete with a new dub featuring actors from the original TV dub! The collection will also feature the original uncut Japanese films, as well as the American edit (sorry, no Angela Anaconda short, though.)
Check out the info on the images for more details, as well as Discotek's threads on Twitter.
I'm generally more subs than dubs these days when I watch anime - at least for the first time I watch a series - but this clip of the English dub of Reborn as a Vending Machine is still pretty funny. (My favorite line is "I don't know what it says about me and my fandom that I just accept this" 😂 dude, same).
Apparently Boxxo's English voice is done by Garret Storms, who is known for roles like Fafnir in Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid, Sekke in Black Clover, Rogue in Fairy Tail, and Hamburg in One Piece, among others.
