Dealt with this A LOT growing up. My relatives were constantly trying to get me to act in a way that they liked rather than the way I wanted to do things. This always caused me not to want to be around them and is one of the major reasons I have so much difficulty interacting with and getting close to others.

Notice your tendency to overexplain.
Don’t try to change it. Just notice.
Some of us, growing up, felt that we had to justify our very existence.
The space we took up. The oxygen we breathed. The food we consumed.
Many of us were made to feel guilty for even existing.
We didn’t feel we necessarily had any right to get our basic needs met— so we developed kind of a defensive style of engaging with the world.
As we grew, this often solidified into a tendency to overexplain when we didn’t need to.
It was as if we were preemptively justifying our needs and behavior…before somebody called us out on it.
To be a kid who feels anxious and guilty for taking up space is exhausting.
To be an adult for whom that was our experience growing up, is depressing.
A big part of our task today is assuring the kid we once were, that they didn’t have to apologize for existing…and to assure the adult we are today that we STILL have a right to breathe, to eat, to be.
Because you do.
You have a right to exist. To take up space. To eat. To breathe. To be.
Not only do you have that right— you make the world better BECAUSE you exist.
That may not feel true because of what you’ve experienced. But it is.

#ThankYou @drglenndoyle for perfectly putting into words what I’ve been trying to explain to my friends for years. I’ve come off as difficult, loud, abrasive and those were never my intentions. Trying to explain anxiety to someone who doesn’t have it is like trying to live in the skin of a coloured person as a white woman. Yes I can empathize but I will never truly understand the very real fears men women and children of colour feel. (at Laval-des-Rapides) https://www.instagram.com/p/CHfV67NDuPG/?igshid=5gafyv2coinq
