the httyd books were the most insanely iconic thing ever. hiccup is a exasperated nerd completely done with everything. he also literally becomes a king at the end. fishlegs is a little sarcastic weirdo with every kind of illness known to man and also buckets of intense Rage. astrid is an absolutely batshit insane twelve year old gremlin called Camicazi who has epic thievery skills and also manic bloodlust. she packbonds with everyone. it goes way deep into the themes of slavery, discrimination, civil wars. it's surprisingly dark for a kids series. snotlout fucking dies. toothless is a bitchy snob dragon who enjoys biting things and eating everything and who talks about himself in the third person. he has no teeth and an ego the size of the fucking moon and is like a centimetre tall. hiccup can fucking talk to dragons. there's lit a whole civil war. they're all like twelve.

something about the way book 10 begins with hiccup being the loneliest he’s ever been. an outcast, a hero on a quest, a wanted boy on both sides of the war. with only three dragons as his closest companions. windwalker, wodensfang and toothless as sole witnesses to his growing up for an entire year - how evident that all three of them tried their absolute hardest to protect and take care of hiccup given the dire circumstances of being on the run.

and something about the way it ends with hiccup's own little ensemble of a group, dubbed as 'the ten companions of the dragonmark' - consisting of his most loved humans and dragons who would now undoubtedly follow him anywhere. finally having the chance to laugh freely and exchange stories and to breathe a little easier, even if just for a moment. and even if worry and guilt seem to weigh heavy on him, the wodensfang is there to remind him of his youth, to 'leave these worries to us old creatures' and that hiccup is no longer alone.

I can't help but realize that the gate to Jörmungandr's prison took a long time to make.

Like... look at this thing. Look at the tiny Dragon Club in the bottom right corner. Look at them compared to the gate Hiccup and the Dragon Riders put there!

This thing took weeks if not months to construct. Between engraving the warning into the wood, (just one rune is roughly the size of a person) finding the trees necessary for the wooden parts, transporting them this deeply into the Dark realm... And then finding plus melting and forging all the metal parts of this thing, (including giant nails to keep it together and whatnot) transporting all that metal deep within, actually constructing the gate then putting the entire thing together... And then there is the locking mechanism designed specifically for Night Furies to open. It had to be both human and dragon-proof... and they had to do all of this with the red dragonsite's gasses poisoning them with each trip there and back, tearing down their serotonin levels, causing depression and anger on top of the stress of knowing there's a dragon like Jörmungandr out there.

This thing had to have been made before he was caught and imprisoned. There would've been no time to build it after his defeat.

That has to mean that, first trouble had to be brewing enough for Hiccup to find out something was extremely wrong. Then he had to find out what was wrong. Then he had to come up with a plan and get his Dragon Riders involved. (No way he built this entire thing by himself, he would need heavy machinery/dragons and manpower as well as time.) And then they had to actually make that gate.

It probably took such a long time. Weeks if not months, like I said earlier.

Weeks if not months of this thing out there, doing whatever it did to make Hiccup, resident dragon protector, lock it away for the safety of all of dragon(and presumably human)kind for as long as he could be contained. This construction had to last.

The Dragon Riders probably worked tirelessly, they probably had to fend this thing off so many times to protect other dragons but also to protect themselves and each other, and it all led up to that one final battle that finally locked it away.

Specifically the part where hiccups about to meet Furious and is talking to everyone and they're giving him advice and everything

And I realized something about the part with Valhallarama

Which is when they're talking she asks him if he remembers The Letter she once sent him

and hiccup lmmediately knows what shes talking about

no asking which letter, no confusion on what she meant

and she then quotes The Exact Letter

and so i dont know if Cressida meant to imply this, but like the way this is all set up implies that Val has only ever sent hiccup

I have my problems with the hidden world, like many others. And i just want to gather all my thoughts in one place here because i feel like many agree that the ending itself isnt the problem, but how they did it. For me, personally, they ruined it with the reactions to the dragons leaving. Specifically, the reactions of the dragons.

First, we have Meatlug, who in the past has been shown thay merely HEARING FISHLEGS' VOICE causes her to become overwhelmed with excitement. (RTTE S2E9)

And yet here, she looks like this:

Like?? Not even a frown when she's leaving Fishlegs, who is clearly her favourite person in the world (literally watch ANY HTTYD media and this is made abundantly clear).

Moving on, we have Barf and Belch. Now it can be said that the twins and their dragon don't really have as many emotional dragon-rider moments as the others, but it is still clear that Barf and Belch love their riders. Except here:

The twins look DEVASTATED, meanwhile they (sorry belch is cropped here I couldnt get a ss with both in it) hardly look sad. Barf at least looks a little upset but still, its borderline.

And moving on, to perhaps what angers me the most, Snotlout & Hookfang. These two are easily my fav dragon-rider duo/team, and for many reasons.

Very quickly, allow me to take you back to RTTE S1E13, in which Hookfang goes out of his way to protect "Girl-Hookfang" and her eggs from a Titanwing Monsterous Nightmare when she sends out what Hiccup describes as a "distress signal".

When Snotlout tells Hookfang to choose between him and the dragon, he ultimately chooses defending her. But at the prospect of leaving Snotlout, he looks LIKE THIS:

He looked MISERABLE and even made sad little dragon noises (idk how to describe them im sorry). So,

TELL ME WHY

IN THE HIDDEN WORLD

HE LOOKS LIKE THIS

SNOTLOUT LOOKS LIKE HES LISTENED TO AN ENTIRE MITSKI ALBUM, BROS FUCKING SOBBING SCREAMING CRYING THROWING UP.

And Hookfang hardly even looks at him, just kinda gives him a sideways glance. Like

HELLO???! And ONE OF THESE had a lower budget as a TV show AND a lower quality model (which, unrelated, ive seen some people really dislike but I think the show models are great!)

The only one to act somewhat appropriately is Toothless, who warbles and makes his little dragon noises at Hiccup, almost talking with him, they have their big heartfelt moment and their cute hug before he leaves. Because of course they get it, its Hiccup and Toothless.

And yeah i get it that clearly the dragons are sick and tired of hunters and therefore understand the need to leave. But they dont even look sad! Breaks my heart because after three movies, two tv shows and all the specials of the dragons and riders bonding and caring for each other and they don't even get a heartfelt goodbye.

And let us not forget that Snotlout, Fishlegs and the twins, who have been riders since the FIRST MOVIE, and main characters in their own right for years, don't even get a GOODBYE LINE?? LIKE LITERALLY, Astrid and Valka? Absolutely, they deserve it. Gobber? Sure, he hasn't known grump nearly as long but he's been a relevant and important main character as long as the kids. And Eret-

Now, I love Eret. He's cool. He's great. Love a hunter turned rider.

But WHY DID THEY GIVE A LINE TO HIM AND SKULLCRUSHER (approx. 1 year relationship) OVER THE SIX YEARS OF FISHLEGS, RUFF, TUFF AND SNOTLOUT? THEY DONT EVEN GET A "Goodbye." WHAT.

And again thats not me shitting on Eret getting one, its on the others NOT

And this isnt even beginning to mention Valka and Cloudjumper do not START ME on their TWENTY YEAR FRIENDSHIP AND BOND BEING TORN APART IN A ONE MINUTE GOODBYE.

Anyways on a lighter note, the parallel with Hiccup removing his hand from Toothless in a reverse of the first time they touched all those years ago always gets me emotional. My fav part about the ending.

And that's pretty much all I like about it LMAOO

Dragon God Hiccup and Winter God Jack AU - Headcanons

- Basically Hiccup came to Earth to help bring peace between Dragons and Humans (plus the red death being a threat to his non-evil dragons).

- Gods can still come down they just can’t stay for prolonged periods without risk of hurting themselves. Jack visits Hiccup often and causes mischief obviously

- Toothless can see Jack but no one else can at first

- Jack was his lover who initially stayed the God realm - I’m thinking something bad happened last time Jack tried to be human (like him drowning in a lake in canon) and so Hiccup didn’t want to see him go through anything like that and took precautions to stop that from happening when he decided he needed to be human for a while (which Jack didn’t like and they have a convo about making decisions for each other at some point)

- He knows Hiccup is bad at lying so he’ll try to interact with him while the other riders are around just to be a shit and laugh as Hiccup tries to explain why he had been pouting or playfully pushing the air

- Initially I was thinking the twins would figure it out but I kinda like Fishlegs being the first and having the ‘holy shit my bestie is a God’ and try treating Hiccup like a God for a while. Eventually he realises Hiccup is already fond of him and doesn’t mind being treated like a mortal. He struggles to keep it a secret though because he worries about offending Hiccup and being smited or something

- Snotlout is a little frightened but soon overcomes that in favour of joining the twins in asking Hiccup to show off his powers. He has to be reminded not to boast about being friends with a God.

- Astrid and Hiccup developed feelings for each other like in canon and Jack knew but obviously Astrid didn’t which was a factor of why Hiccup was hesitant to date her. Once she finds out and she meets Jack they discuss it and are happy to share him.

- I like the idea of the Gods being disconnected from humanity on occasion, basically being corrupted by their powers. Since he’s been mostly separated from his powers once he starts using them he initially goes on a bit of a power trip arc (maybe Toothless got captured or something and he was having a bad day and got pushed over the edge - pun intended) and Jack is the one to calm him down. - I have a whole scene of it based on the ‘nothing left to lose’ song from the tangled series, I may get around to writing

(A lot of this is obviously inspired by the multitude of God-like Hiccup and Jack content in this fandom (and just the Hijack content in general too) btw - the main one probably being @mdoodlerfandomart’s AU for Dragon God Hiccup)

lowkey in need of a hurt/comfort fic of the dragon riders gang post midnight scrum, all of them seeing hiccup with broken bones and cuts and bruises in places that shouldn’t be there

astrid getting frustrated and a little angry with him after hiccup keeps insisting that it’s not as awful as it looks and no hiccup, it really is but softening immediately when tending to his wounds

fishlegs just being absolutely horrified about the whole thing that he can’t even talk or offer his usual words of comfort bc what do you mean krogan dragged you around in chains so he just holds the twins’ hands to ground himself

snotlout berating hiccup and telling him that he’s an absolute moron for letting it get this bad but deep inside feeling a crippling amount of guilt for not being able to find and protect him sooner and proceeds to assist astrid

ruffnut and tuffnut terrified to their souls bc (though not the first time) they’re reminded that hiccup’s not as invincible as they make him out to be, the rare instance where their worry overshadows their usual ability to ease tension with lighthearted jokes so they’re just both uncharacteristically silent
