“You’re just desperate to keep Downton in the family! You don’t care how I feel about any of this!” Mary accused.

“That’s not why we’re doing this,” Violet said calmly, relenting slightly as Mary shot her a disbelieving look. “Very well, that’s not the only reason we’re encouraging – “

“Pushing,” Mary interrupted. “You’re pushing me into it.”

“ – encouraging you to consider Matthew as a suitor,” Violet continued, mildly. “Your mother and I believe you’d be well-suited. And you know how often your mother and I agree on anything.”

“Why? You barely know anything about him!”

“I had Murray look into him. He’s risen quickly at his firm, so it appears he’s intelligent – “

Mary rolled her eyes. “Intelligence has never been considered necessary for an earl before.”

“ – meaning he won’t bore you easily. And he’s very pleasant to look at. I’m sure the physical side of marriage would be much less of a hardship with an attractive man.”

Mary stared open-mouthed at her grandmother.

“Let’s not be coy, Mary. Unsavoury as it is, it’s necessary to produce the next heir. Wouldn’t you rather that be an appealing prospect? Do close your mouth, dear; you are not a goldfish.”
