Around midday on April 1 [1974], Paul and Linda returned to the beach house that had hosted the previous night’s revelries with their children, Heather, Mary and Stella. John was still in bed when McCartney arrived, and his new lifestyle seemed to cause a bemused Paul some slight alarm. “He was a teenager again,” McCartney reflected. “He was just being his old Liverpool self, just a wild, wild boy. Linda and I had kids so we’d be up early. We wouldn’t be just lying in bed until three in the afternoon, which is what John was doing. It was everything he’d always wanted to do in Liverpool…”
Once Lennon had eventually risen, McCartney recalled taking John into one of the rooms at the back of the beach house. The two men exchanged pleasantries, and were happy to see each other. Paul found John in a mellow mood due to his docile routine. Having surfaced from his noonday slumber, Lennon eventually joined them at the poolside, where McCartney was enjoying the company of familiar faces. Keith Moon complimented him on his drumming work on Band On The Run following the last-minute departure of Denny Seiwell in September. Nilsson attempted to entice McCartney into sampling some angel dust, who politely (and wisely) declining his offer. “He seemed to understand,” Paul recalled. “But that’s how it was there.”
Meanwhile, Moon assistant Peter ‘Dougal’ Butler and Pang took photos of Ringo and Paul relaxing together. McCartney positioned himself at the piano for most of the afternoon, playing a medley of Beatles songs and some standards. Ringo seated himself besides McCartney, enjoying the moment and offering vocal support. Pang also took a photo of Lennon and Starr together, but no photo has surfaced of all three former Beatles together. Knowing the beneficial and pleasurable effect it would have on John, Pang had regularly encouraged him to hook up with Paul and Ringo. “The four guys were brothers. It was here on a sunny afternoon that John and Paul were photographed together for the very last time. Dougal Butler’s Polaroid picture of Lennon and McCartney showed the two Beatles reclining by the poolside, looking relaxed as they engage in casual conversation, Paul shading his eyes from the sun as they talk. The mood, May has recalled, was relaxed, light and friendly. This, she claims, is how it worked and was where they were really at. Here were two guys enjoying each other’s company, picking up from where they had left off some four to five years ago. They acted, Pang insisted, “like brothers that hadn’t seen each other in a while.”
“Certainly, it re-affirmed their friendship after a fashion,” Clayson argues, “not least because their personal dynamic was such that utterances unamusing to anyone else would have them howling with laughter on the carpet at Lennon’s villa in Santa Monica.”
“Let’s see each other again,” McCartney ventured to his old partner before leaving the gathering. Following the McCartneys’ departure, Lennon turned to Pang and said: “You know, I sometimes worry about George and Ringo. Never about Paul. The guy’s just so together.”
Lennon claimed he had also invited Harrison to join them at the Sunday evening gathering, but the guitarist was apparently involved in recording sessions with Ravi Shankar at A&M Studios. While all four Beatles were apparently together in LA simultaneously, George was unable to attend. “He still had some trouble getting in and out of the States,” Lennon would later comment. “There were three of us and everybody says: ‘Beatles getting back together.’ Hey! Hey! We can’t even meet, man! We can’t even get the four of us together for a meeting, let alone play! The other month, Paul and Ringo and me met in LA and we wanted George to be there, but they wouldn’t let him in at the time.”
After the day’s impromptu musical gathering, Pang overheard Lennon tell Nilsson: “Wouldn’t it be fun to get the guys back together again?” In the minds of Nilsson and Pang, there was no doubt which ‘guys’ Lennon was referring to. Reconciliation was clearly at the back of Lennon’s mind, even at this stage of proceedings. Four weeks after jamming with McCartney, Lennon was seen onstage at the March Of The Dimes concert in the company of Harry Nilsson, announcing the latest whereabouts of his former Beatle colleagues from the stage.
It seems interesting that, as his notorious ‘Lost Weekend’ proceeded, Lennon moved away from an outright dismissal of a Beatles reconciliation. He began to demonstrate a nostalgic fascination and enthusiasm for playing this classic material with his former colleagues. While all four Beatles went through similar changes of heart during the decade, Lennon was more public about his thoughts in frequent interview sessions during 1973–74. Having agreed to a further rendezvous with McCartney, Lennon was, according to Pang, giving serious consideration to his private plan of re-convening the band live onstage. “We talked about reuniting The Beatles. At one point he wanted to do it. For the heck of it. Because there wasn’t any pressure, any contracts. He’d say: ‘That’d be fun.’”

Today we remember the passing of Keith Moon who Died: September 7, 1978 in London, England
Keith John Moon was an English drummer for the rock band the Who. He was noted for his unique style and his eccentric, often self-destructive behaviour. Moon grew up in Alperton, a suburb of Wembley, in Middlesex, and took up the drums during the early 1960s.
After playing with a local band, the Beachcombers, he joined the Who in 1964 before they recorded their first single. He remained with the band during their rise to fame, and was quickly recognised for his drumming style, which emphasised tom-toms, cymbal crashes, and drum fills. Throughout Moon's tenure with the Who his drum kit steadily grew in size, and (along with Ginger Baker) he has been credited as one of the earliest rock drummers to regularly employ double bass drums in his setup. Moon occasionally collaborated with other musicians and later appeared in films, but considered playing in the Who his primary occupation, and remained a member of the band until his death.
In addition to his talent as a drummer, however, Moon developed a reputation for smashing his kit on stage and destroying hotel rooms on tour. He was fascinated by blowing up toilets with cherry bombs or dynamite, and by destroying television sets. Moon enjoyed touring and socialising, and became bored and restless when the Who were inactive. His 21st birthday party in Flint, Michigan, has been cited as a notorious example of decadent behaviour by rock groups.
Moon suffered a number of setbacks during the 1970s, most notably the accidental death of chauffeur Neil Boland and the breakdown of his marriage. He became addicted to alcohol, particularly brandy and champagne, and acquired a reputation for decadence and dark humour; his nickname was "Moon the Loon".
After moving to Los Angeles with personal assistant Peter "Dougal" Butler during the mid-1970s, Moon recorded his only solo album, the poorly received Two Sides of the Moon. While touring with the Who, on several occasions he passed out on stage and was hospitalised. By the time of their final tour with him in 1976, and particularly during production of The Kids Are Alright and Who Are You, the drummer's deterioration was evident. Moon moved back to London in 1978, dying in September of that year from an overdose of Heminevrin, a drug intended to treat or prevent symptoms of alcohol withdrawal.
Moon's drumming continues to be praised by critics and musicians. He was posthumously inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1982, becoming the second rock drummer to be chosen, and in 2011, Moon was voted the second-greatest drummer in history by a Rolling Stone readers' poll.

Have you read Anette Walter-Lax's book about her relationship with Keith Moon yet? I'm curious to know what you think of it. Obviously, I'm quite horrified but also not really surprised of what I read. I feel terrible for Anette though. I thought Keith was nicer to her than to Kim but she went through some horrible shit as well. And the way she describes some groupies... They sound horrible even though I know she's just talking about particular cases.
I’m planning on reading it soon (I prefer e-books but there’s no e-book copy yet 🥺). I know from Keith’s biographies by Dougal Butler and Tony Fletcher that he was very emotionally abusive and controlling to Anette although both of the books say he was never physically violent towards her; obviously emotional abuse is just as damaging as physical abuse and should be taken just as seriously. I didn’t know she talks about groupies in it, I’m interested to hear what she says! Anette is a very lovely lady and I’m glad that she’s finally telling her story. I love Keith as well; he was the person that first got me into the 1960s and classic rock but he had very dangerous demons and treated the women in his life very terribly, and that is unforgivable. I know Dougal Butler has said that if mental illness had more awareness in the 60s and 70s, he is sure that Keith would have received treatment and gotten better, and I believe him when he says that. It is really too bad.

It was here on a sunny afternoon that John and Paul were photographed together for the very last time. Dougal Butler’s Polaroid picture of Lennon and McCartney showed the two Beatles reclining by the poolside, looking relaxed as they engage in casual conversation, Paul shading his eyes from the sun as they talk. The mood, May has recalled, was relaxed, light and friendly. This, she claims, is how it worked and was where they were really at. Here were two guys enjoying each other’s company, picking up from where they had left off some four to five years ago. They acted, Pang insisted, “like brothers that hadn’t seen each other in a while.”
“Certainly, it re-affirmed their friendship after a fashion,” [author Alan] Clayson argues, “not least because their personal dynamic was such that utterances unamusing to anyone else would have them howling with laughter on the carpet at Lennon’s villa in Santa Monica.”
“Let’s see each other again,” McCartney ventured to his old partner before leaving the gathering. Following the McCartneys’ departure, Lennon turned to Pang and said: “You know, I sometimes worry about George and Ringo. Never about Paul. The guy’s just so together.”
