"As black America approaches the 21st century, our capacity or our failure to build a solid bridge . . . of works will determine whether millions of young blacks already with us or yet unborn will cross over into the new century, or fall into the abyss."
Another name you almost certainly didn't know: M. (Moses) Carl Holman, civil rights activist, writer, and poet. Born in 1919 St. Louis, Holman showed an early gift for writing, and at the age of 19 won a scriptwriting award from a popular syndicated radio program. He graduated magna cum laude from Lincoln University and went on to acquire Master's degrees from the University of Chicago and from Yale. While at Yale he published his first collection of poems, and began regularly writing articles for various newspapers and magazines on income inequity, urban poverty, literacy, and other issues important to Black Americans. In 1962 he taught English at Clark College in Atlanta, giving him a front-row seat to key events in the earliest days of the civil rights movement. As some of his students participated in sit-ins and the Freedom Rides, he found himself appointed to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, of which he eventually became deputy director in 1966.
In 1968 Ebony magazine named Holman as one of the 100 Most Influential Black Americans. That same year Holman published what is probably his best-known work: The Baptizin', a play which won first prize in the National Community Theater Festival. In addition to multiple collections of poems, Holman also published a definitive overview of the civil rights movement in the U.S., from 1965 to 1975.
Perhaps most significantly, in 1971 Holman was named Vice President of the National Urban Coalition. This organization had re-formed in 1967 in the wake of the so-called "long, hot summer" of racial strife and injustices. During this time Holman's singular talent for delivering quiet and polite, but still powerful, speeches came to the fore and he jumpstarted a great many local housing, education, job training, and economic development programs aimed at disadvantaged Black and Hispanic communities.
In his later years Holman forcefully addressed the issue of "dual literacy" for Black children --emphasizing that such students not only needed to be well-versed not only in the fundamentals such as reading, writing, and public speaking; but also in math, science, and technology. His 1988 obituary notes that Holman "had an uncanny ability to form a coalition out of the most diverse elements, and it was often said that the key to his ability to do this was the fact that he never appeared to have an agenda for himself."
(Teachers: Need some resources to engage your students this Black History Month? I'll send you a pile of these trading cards, no cost, no obligation. Just give me a mailing address and let me know how many students in your class. No strings attached, no censorship, no secret-relaying-of-names to Abbott or DeSantis or HuckaSanders.)

Shadow work ALWAYS comes before ritual work. Like, it’s all very well to do a spell for anxiety, but where is that anxiety coming from? Is it straight up fear? Unresolved trauma? Is your nervous system fucked? Is it a mental disorder? Is it generalised or specific? Are your hormones all over the place? Is someone in your life just being a dick? Without doing the work to find the root cause, you can’t know where to point your ritual compass, ya know? Do the shadow work, THEN do the ritual.
Important side note: not everyone is in the right place/time to do shadow work. It can be a lot. Make sure you have the right support (professional if needed!) if you’re gonna do it. 🖤

…and the most transformative aspects of therapy for me has been 1) the ability to speak my rawest truths without them being mitigated by the expectations, judgements, or emotions of the person listening 2) observing within myself what it sounds to hear some of them said for the first time out loud 3) being encouraged not to judge myself for saying those words or feeling the way I feel. Having the intense irritability, there are times I find myself not being able to focus, I see a mess that was not there a moment ago. Easily put on edge feeling angry. Crying all of the time over the most smallest thing’s. Feeling as if there is no time for myself. I yell at times & don’t even realize I am doing it. When I think about it, allowing myself time to rest allows things to stack up. I am realizing that it is normal to leave a mess be yes it may feel better once its clean yet it only lasts 5 mins. There’s the sleep disruptions either by my own doing, a crying baby, a snoring dad. The chest pain, crazy amounts of hair loss, teeth grinding, jaw pains, menstrual changes, lost sex drive, dizziness. I often have flashbacks of how I was treated as a kid which I have found to be the hardest to face yet I do it anyways. I don’t want to see the look I had as a kid in my childs eyes. The pain I felt as a child no longer serves me yet leaves the biggest imprint. Remember what it felt like to be yelled at or hit. I had to learn myself what it’s like to not be defined by the past. To learn what is right from wrong, to see who I want to be like vs who I do not. To pick myself up when I got knocked down. I had to learn who was protecting me vs who was harming me. I forget at times how far I’ve truly come. How I never gave up & continue to keep going. I write this today with tears of joy. I am finally at a place in my life where I am content, I am happy, I am smiling, I am grateful for all those who have helped me along the way whether we still are aligned or not. The point is we we’re, for a reason. Life is all about the perspective YOU choose to SEE. I choose to see the best in not only myself but everyone around me, at times that bite’s me in the butt yet I have learned that boundaries are a thing.

All these ailment’s are true to me yet do not define who I am. I know that these ailments will not last forever. There is more to me than just being a mom a friend a lover a nurturer a teacher.
All these ailments are happening due to the lack of time I chose to not put into myself. I would push it off & forget. You aren’t alone💫
I am allowed to have fun
I am allowed to use all 5 sense’s
I am allowed to place boundaries
I am allowed to feel & live through my emotions
I am allowed to be my most authentic self
I am safe
I am allowed to say no
I am allowed to do stuff I love to do
I am allowed to rest when the baby rests
I am allowed to eat the fruit’s or whatever it be
I am allowed to take my time healing
I am allowed to be me
I am not ashamed
I am worthy & deserving
I am OCD
I am Confident
I am allowed to self indulge
I am healthy
I am strong
I am willing to put in the work

#fridaythoughts “things that look #effortless takes years of #practice.” In order to be at #ease with yourself… you first must #dothework ON yourself. Remember that when you complain how easy other people seem to have it. I may have #swanmedicine but, just beneath the surface of water… I’m kicking like crazy. The ONLY reason it looks this hood is because I’m use to doing the work. #psychicmedium #reikimasterteacher #lightworker #personaldevelopment #practicemakesperfect #noshortcuts #ascension #evolve #wordsofwisdom #blackwomanmagic https://www.instagram.com/p/CdgUPNqOySK/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

"The moment that I was questioned as a transgender woman raising a child I became a feminist."
Say hello to activist Miss Major Griffin-Gracy, 82 years old as of this writing and not about to ease up in the fight for trans rights. She faced many hurdles during her life --including homelessness and incarceration-- and it's these challenges that fuel her determination to this day. In 1969, Majors fought the police at Stonewall, right alongside Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P. Johnson (see Lesson #94 in this series), and to this day expresses doubt that the promises of Stonewall have truly been kept --particularly in this cynical and opportunistic age of "corporate Pride." ("Who invited the motherf**kers from Home Depot?") In the 1970's, having herself been an inmate at New York's notorious Dannemora prison and Bellevue Hospital's so-called "queen tank," Griffin-Gracy provided direct services to trans women dealing with addiction and incarceration. In the 1980's she took it upon herself to care for people impacted by HIV/AIDS.
In 2005, Miss Major joined San Francisco-based Trans Gender Variant and Intersex Justice Project (TGIJP) as a staff organizer, and later as executive director, to lead the group's efforts advocating for incarcerated trans women. She has often spoken out against the prison system, which she says contributes to the incarceration of transgender individuals, particularly trans people of color and those with low incomes.
Now 82, Miss Major, known to many simply as "Mama," resides in Little Rock, Arkansas, where she continues to be a vocal activist. She founded and administers the House of GG, a retreat center for trans people and their families.

The essence of true success is a concoction of elements as unpredictable as the weather. #coachjoe #curiousleader
🪢 Adopting a mindset of success is akin to walking a tightrope, requiring an exquisite balance of humility to keep us grounded, courage to dare the impossible, and resilience, the strength to rise each time we fall. 🔺This equilibrium is not stumbled upon but cultivated with intention and perseverance. 👉🏼❤️‍🔥It’s our internal drive to exceed our own expectations that truly defines success.

This week on the Daly Dose, the NFL proves once again that it is king, and our Daly Dose March Madness Bracket Challenge is open for you to join! Then, we are joined by college basketball coach and recruiting expert Jared Zeidman, to discuss the world of college athletic recruiting. Jared discusses his background in coaching college basketball, how he ended up taking some time away, and then how he became a consultant for young athletes that are looking for help in the recruiting process! Jared breaks down some of the most important points of his book Nail The Recruiting Process and talks about some of the best ways that high school athletes can separate themselves from the rest of the recruiting pack. We also look at some of the biggest pitfalls that face players and their parents as they try to find the best college situation. What are the biggest things that he wants them to understand about the recruiting process? What are college coaches really looking for in recruits? He also tells us some of the newest recruiting trends that prospective athletes need to be aware of, and whether or not the current collegiate athletic system is sustainable. If you are a prospective collegiate athlete or know someone who is, you need to check out this very informative episode of the Daly Dose!

Lesson Learned
Share a lesson you wish you had learned earlier in life. To stand up for yourself. Not let people walk all over you. And taking accountability. I didn’t start setting boundaries and standing firm in my beliefs until a few years ago. That’s only because The Mórrígan took me under her wing (kind of literally, cause She shapeshifts into a crow), and told me to work on myself. I had to learn to…
