The Persistence of Memory Digital transfers of vintage photographs (1976) on doilies (1986) installed on a black chadar (veil) belonging to the artist’s late mother. 2022
Borrowing from Salvador Dali’s surrealist ideas around space, time and memory, Mariam Magsi creates a series of digital photo transfers onto doilies. Doilies are ornamental mats, usually in varying shades of white, made of lace, fabric or paper with a lace pattern, typically placed on a plate under cakes or other sweet foods and savoury pastries. The word doily comes from Doiley, the last name of a reputable and well-known Londoner, who dealt with dry food trades in the 17th century. The texture of the doilies bleeds into the image, merging with the texture of the vintage, analogue photographs, printed in Lahore, Pakistan back in 1976. The photograph portrays a wedding banquet in Punjab featuring the maternal family of the artist. The bride and groom are seated, partaking in rituals and customs conducive to marriage. A young child proceeds to present a glass of milk to the groom first.
The generation featured inherited a brand new country and identity, unprocessed and unimaginably violent trauma, fuelled by nationalism, along with pressures to preserve culture, prevent erasure, and always, at all costs, perform hospitality, so as to avoid being perceived as a failed citizen. This photograph was made 29 years after Pakistan was formed, in a violent partition with India, puppeteered by the British in collaboration with the Indian subcontinent’s political elite. Only 6 years before this banquet was recorded, Bangladesh declared its independence from Pakistan in 1971. A tear in the photograph transfers onto the doily, echoing gaps in history. The doily is taken out of its original function and serves as a spherical light-box illuminating the otherwise fading black and white photograph. Due to the dark nature of the chadar (veil) upon which the work lies, it is not clear if the doily is on the ground, installed on the wall, or presented on a table.
The Persistence of Memory was commissioned by the Dawat Yan Banquet with support from the AGOxRBC Artists in Residence Program, 2022.

Shoutout to Dilton’s weird impassioned declaration that he’d never let anything happen to Jughead before taking him to the fuckbunker, the bunker where people have sex,

I just got done watching "The Archies" on Netflix and loved it!!! 😀 They did a great job portraying the characters closer to the comics while also having it set in 1963/64 India and including Bollywood/musical numbers. All of them were just like how they were in the comics and even the 60s cartoon series than "Riverdale" ever had them. I did like "Riverdale" in the beginning till about season 3, but this movie is so much more how I wanted that show to be as it felt more like a teen movie/show from when I was a teen back in the late 90s/early 2000s (which is when my favorite version of their spinoffs "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" show/TV movie and the "Josie and the Pussycats" movie came out). Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead, Reggie, Ethel, Dilton/Kevin (as he was a mashup of the two), Moose, Midge, Cheryl, Pop Tate, Hotdog, and all the parents were there. It was a cute movie and they did leave it open to do more. Very happy with how this turned out.
ETA: Also I loved this versions takes on Betty (as I always related to comic Betty), Jughead, and Reggie and reminded me how I originally thought as a kid reading the comics that Betty should be with one of them instead of Archie and this movie stuck with that. LOL

Y/N hadn't been trying to seduce Archie and Reggie. He had been trying to be a good friend to Reggie, who, had never experienced a true Halloween before. They decided to show Reggie a true Halloween experience. Trick or treating. Howling in a cemetery. And necking in a haunted house. That last one made Y/N blush with heat as he had been having these lustful daydreams of kissing both Archie and Reggie, taking off their sweaty and grease covered shirts as they—
He shook his head of those thoughts and got ready as Archie, Reggie, and Dilton Doiley were waiting for him and Betty to come downstairs so they could go trick or treating. Y/N blushed as he put on his black slacks and dance shoes before he put on the black overalls over his shirtless body. He fixed his white bow tie and put the small bolder hat on his head and stared at his reflection in the mirror. Courtesy of Veronica Lodge, Y/N was a male burlesque, or boylesque.
Y/N knocked on Betty's door. "Betty? Are you almost ready?"
"Yeah, just let me put on my lipstick."
A few minutes later, Betty came out of her room dressed like Goldilocks. "So? How do I look?"
"Amazing, sis." Y/N said.
"Thank you. I'm sure those boys will have an orgasmic meltdown when we go downstairs." Betty giggled.
Y/N blushed and laughed too.
Archie, Dilton, and Reggie were watching their parents on TV as they came down the stairs and they all had shocked looks on their faces. Betty gave them a teasing smile. "Well, boys? What do you think? How do we look?"
Archie and Reggie got up with goofy grins and stammered out a response. "Wow, geeze whiz, Betty, you look... Tremendous."
"Ring the bell, I'm knocked out." Reggie said.
Betty giggled softly. "Thank you."
"Who are you supposed to be?" Dilton asked Betty.
"Goldilocks." Y/N said. "And I'm a male burlesque."
Archie and Reggie looked at him and they gulped at his smooth and naked skin. The small bowtie didn't help them either. "Wow, Y/N, you're... You're..." Archie began.
"You're smokin." Reggie grinned.
"Forget that. He's hot." Dilton said.
Y/N blushed. "Thanks. Shall we? Mr. Buck Rogers and One-Eyed Jack?" He walked towards the door and bent down to grab his jacket and gave Archie and Reggie a teaser.
