the importance of pov and kiriona gaia as gideon nav’s imperialist aspect
others have already made some really smart posts about how kiriona is gideon when she’s lost everything and everyone that made her who she was, and how even in the first two books, gideon was this terrifically sad creature who was disguised by the fact that she was her own narrator.
but I want to expand on that last bit, because yes. kiriona is a gideon who has lost everything, who has had to make tough decisions to survive, who has had to adapt to being primarily around her father (a manipulative asshole) and ianthe (ianthe). but this is also the first time we’re getting to see gideon from a perspective other than her own.
we’ve always known that gideon is a beautifully unreliable narrator - see her complete understatement of the fight before harrow opened the tomb, where she neglects to tell us that she almost killed harrow with her bare hands - but I think that for a lot of us, the introduction of kiriona was when we first felt that.
now, nona is not an objective narrator either (lmao). and she does actively dislike gideon (which is fascinating, and which I could go on about for several posts). but she does offer an outside perspective on gideon that we have, up to this point, been lacking.
because… yeah. sometimes, like anyone, gideon’s kind of mean. we know she’s a good person - her goodness is in many ways one of the central drivers of the plot - but that doesn’t mean she’s nice all of the time. it’s just that when she’s being mean to crux, or ianthe, or even harrow we can say, well that person deserved that. but the truth is, gideon has lived through the kind of hell that very few people could survive with any kind of goodness and softness left intact. she didn’t live through it, in fact. she’s just kind of… existed through it.
I saw another post point this out, and I want to reiterate: gideon’s goal, her whole life, has been to join the cohort. when we first meet her, we’re like, ok, makes sense, that’s the only ‘out’ available to her. and we kind of forget, even as we learn more about the empire, that what gideon wants to join is this actively and horrifically violent imperialist force. when we get to nona, and we meet hot sauce and her gang and joli and the angel and even the edenites, we expect gideon to have kept up with us somehow, to reject the empire. we want her to be one of the “good guys” (goodness in the tlt universe is another longass post I want to write…).
but gideon doesn’t reject the empire. because, crucially, she IS the empire - she is its heir, never mind the fact that that doesn’t really mean anything when the current emperor is immortal.
what I am trying to say is this: kiriona is gideon when you take everything from her, and then replace it with her father and everything he represents, and then take a step back.
that step back is crucial. it is what allows us to remember how imperialism - and by extension, or by metaphor, cruelty - works. gideon becomes cruel because she is in proximity to cruel people, AND because she is not in proximity to us.
THAT is what Muir is saying with kiriona. even the most kind, good, earnest protagonist can become a tool of evil in the right circumstances: and those circumstances include perspective. gideon, like it or not, is currently actively choosing to be a tool of empire. and if we were in her head, we might be able to - or we might be tricked into - accept her justifications for why she’s doing it.
the perspective shift is what allows us to see gideon as she - currently - truly is. it is no accident that this is when we get the outside pov. Muir allows us nowhere to hide; we have to confront what gideon has become and by extension what she always has been.
gideon nav is a good person, and I fully believe that in alecto we will watch her reject her father; I fully believe she will get to be a hero. but in order for that to happen, she - and we - must first undergo radical change and growth in terms of her worldview and attitudes. kiriona is not gideon’s final form. but in the same way that john is described by harrow as having aspects, kiriona is the aspect or facet of gideon that embraces cruelty, that perpetuates empire.
Muir tells us: even the most beautiful-hearted, trod-on girl in the world can become a tool of empire. but I have no doubt that in alecto she will tell us: this is how that girl can destroy it.

My thoughts on Bucks 'jealousy': I genuinely think Buck was jealous of both Eddie, and of Tommy.
Tommy is new, he doesn't understand these feelings he has towards Tommy. He doesn't recognize his attraction to a man. He knows he can't name whatever it is, but there's a feeling there towards Tommy he hasn't experienced before.
With Eddie, Buck has always had some sort of feelings towards Eddie. these feelings are so deeply ingrained in who he is that he doesn't recognize/fully understand the lengths of his attraction (they love each other to the core). He is so in love with Eddie that he doesn't recognize it as anything other than normal.
So, Buck is attracted to Tommy and jealous because he doesn't think Tommy wants him in the same way and Buck is so connected to Eddie that he's upset and mad over Eddie possibly choosing someone over him, that Buck isn't as important to Eddie as Eddie is to Buck.

thinking about gojo being obsessed with your eyes.
which is ironic, since his are so special and well known, so why would he find yours so interesting?
you could ask him this question, and he wouldn’t give you a real answer much to your dismay. he’d tease you, prod at you for being so persistent in your question.
truthfully, he found your eyes are what make you most human.
because he was born with the six eyes technique, he was praised since the moment he was born over them. all the compliments and attention he got was solely because of who he was. the strongest jujutsu sorcerer.
when he looked in your eyes all he saw was you. no technique, no weight on your shoulders of being the strongest. none of that.
in a way, he lived through you.
he could spend hours looking into your eyes and try to picture how you saw the world through them. how you saw him.
when you’d lay in bed together after a long day, long after you fell asleep—he’d trace the puffy skin under your eyes. he took in the feeling of your eyelashes against his thumbs, soft and fragile as they flutter.
gojo has seen many things in his life—horrible and traumatizing things that will follow him forever. he doesn’t know soft or fragile but looking at you, he’s starting to become familiar with those words.
you make him feel more human than he ever knew possible. he thinks he should be worrisome over feeling that way. but no, not with you.
never with you.

kind of interesting to me how the majority of popular tv shows with lgbtq+ relationships (or hinted at lgbtq+ relationships) all center around morally questionable characters. like for example some confirmed gay romances are stede and ed (our flag means death) and eve and villanelle (killing eve) and in both of these shows, both of the characters in the ship are murderers and arguably bad people. some not confirmed ones are hannibal and will (hannibal) and nandor and guillermo (what we do in the shadows). again they are all terrible people who continue to do terrible things throughout their respective shows. i guess to me it just kind of gives the message that yes, we can have gay couples, but they both have to be morally questionable and almost undeserving of our full admiration if that makes sense?? like if you’re lgbtq+ you have to be a bad person to go along with it.
just interesting to me that you always have to feel at least a little guilty when enjoying queer ships in media because of this.

smth i love abt hi-fi rush is that like. the gang cares abt chai despite his attitude. and his attitude very much feels like smth constructed to keep ppl at a distance (post expounding upon this + more coming in the future at some point)
but they don't rlly try to change chai. they just accept him and care abt him in spite of it. even when he's being frustrating
it feels very like..."you're trying to push me away bc you think you deserve to be alone and that you don't need anyone, but i refuse to let you. i care abt you now. it's too late. i'm not going anywhere."
and eventually he stops trying to push them away, bc he realizes that. maybe he doesn't deserve to be alone forever. maybe he can have friends and family and ppl that love him, and it isn't a cruel trick or just pity

Since Grogu only has one name, it’s likely the Armorer took his name to be a last name of sorts, hence why he was given Din’s first name

Something about you and Matt faking being enemies because you guys have grown up kinda resenting each other and wanting to keep up the facade, but you both have been together since sophomore year when Matt accidentally let it slip that he liked you during an argument.
So I can just see you guys, insulting each other and hating each other at school or with family. But in private- you’re all over each other.

the ailani/anakin parallel of qui-gon being the reason they’re a jedi but barely knowing him for that long before he dies… your mind i am in awe
Thank you so much for reading and for sending this ask over!! This parallel is one of my favorite aspects of The Acolyte, so I’m honored you noticed it and sent this ask over!! I could legitimately talk about this for hours, I'm so thankful for compliments and interest!!! Thank you!! I love love talking about this fic so much-
I think it’s a vital part of my storytelling to write parallels between Anakin and Ailani because, in the end, I want the killed and the killer to be the same. They have parallel lives but different paths.
Their connection to Qui-Gon is one of my favorite parallels. Qui-Gon’s belief in prophecy made Ailani and Anakin join the Order. The Council would not have accepted either child if Qui-Gon had not intervened. They both know this.
Later in life, both Anakin and Ailani are trapped by the same idea that got them into the Order. Ailani is obsessed with prophecy, and it ruins her. Anakin is defined by prophecy and the weight crushes him.
In the Revenge of the Sith novel, there’s a line that basically says the true danger of prophecy is knowing it at all, because one might act differently and change the future in an attempt to bring something to pass.
Anakin and Ailani are proof of this philosophy. Qui-Gon’s influence on them, and his own interest in mysticism sets them on their paths, which brings them together as killed and killer. They hardly know him, but he plays a major role in their lives and deaths.

so, sometimes i see people saying that victors like cecelia and woof from 8 or the morphlings from 6 or seeder from 11 just waited out their games and didn't kill anyone or only had one kill (i've been in the thg fandom on a variety of platforms i haven't mainly seen it here) and i personally have to disagree.
"...no one in this arena was a victor by chance. except maybe peeta."
finnick says this in catching fire, and i would reckon that he knows how all the victors won their games. i'm not going to say from this that the victors were evil or whatever, because they were children trying to survive. sure, they killed people, but their situations were very nuanced moral conundrums and, also, they were children.
i think i dislike it because to act as though the "nicer" or "milder" victors didn't kill people seems to me to act as though good people don't do bad things to survive, that the games didn't corrupt people and hurt them. the games changed them, but they continued being themselves.
let's use cecelia as a case study. she fought in her games, she killed people, she survived. years later, she got married and had three children, the model of maternal love. her being a loving wife and mother, a woman whose children held on to her when she was reaped for the second time. that doesn't mean that, when push came to shove, she didn't kill anyone to stay alive. that she didn't do what we consider to be bad things when she was put in a horrible situation. her dying in the bloodbath in the 75th games doesn't mean that she was incapable of fighting to survive in her original games. in fact, it may suggest that she didn't run away from her first cornucopia, but fought in it.
my point is, i don't think that the victors who are more mild-mannered than katniss or died in the bloodbath of the 75th weren't fighters. they were teenagers forced to kill to survive. they did it. but that does not make them evil. but that lack of aggression doesn't mean they didn't fight in their games.

Idea, Kiloton is a dimension traveler searching for his Megatron/a place to call home.
He left his dimension when Megatron disappeared/died/the whole place was just destroyed and has been traveling for who knows how long.
He falls in love with all the Megs he meets because he's literally "I love you in every universe"

While rewatching Princess Tutu with my friends (who were watching it for the first time), we all realized that Drosselmeyer is basically like the original creator/author/showrunner who ends up ruining a series because they believe it has to be edgy, and Fakir is the fanfic writer who is like “fuck you, *writes a fix-it fic*”
