After a super long wait, I finally got to watch Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness yesterday! And oh my… “I love you in every universe” made my heart flutter 💗🦋
From now on… “I love you(s)” are NOT allowed. What are allowed are as follows:
1. “You are the bane of my existence and the object of all my desires.”
2. “I know I am imperfect, but I will humble myself before you because I cannot imagine my life without you.”
3. “I love you in every universe.”

Stephen Strange and America Chavez, TO ME, is the best thing to come out of Multiverse of Madness.
First, I’ve always loved the trope of an experienced, somewhat emotionally closed off loner being suddenly given a child (Din & Grogu, Logan & Laura). But what makes this even better is that it doesn’t take the entire movie for Stephen and America to show how much they love each other. From the first multiversal jump, Stephen is already willing to comfort and protect her not just because she’s important, but because he wants to. Even when she hugs him, he doesn't freeze or get overly uncomfortable like he did in his original movie (after performing the surgery in the opening act), he freely returned it with a worried “are you okay?”.
Second, this immediate willingness to protect her helps complete America’s character arc for two reasons.
Stephen treats her as a person and not as a weapon, or as a power. By standing up for her to Bruce Campbell’s character, choosing to watch and show compassion at the memory of her loss, he valued HER above her powers, the powers that kept her on the run since she was about 6 and what she believed "killed" her moms. In his motivational speech, the wording emphasizes HER, more then her abilities. “No. America, I’ve come here to tell you to trust yourself. trust your power. that’s how we stop her.” “But I can’t control it-” “yes you can. You have been all along. Every time you opened a portal, you sent us exactly where we needed to go.” “What about the first time?” “Even that led you to this moment. You’re gonna kick that Witch’s ass.” He gave her firm ground to build her identity that has space for the self, beyond her abilities after spending so much of her life being defined as ONLY her abilities. she didn’t feel like the author of her own story because the world didn’t either, she was only ever a cog in the machine of the community (Wanda, the sorcerers, The Illuminati). While for Stephen, simply having her around was enough. He gave her something that only a parent, the thing she was robbed of, can give: unconditional love.
Stephen being the one to give her this safe space to build her identity, means the most to her because she inherently dislikes the “concept” of his identity. “Of the two Doctor Stranges I've met, you are not my favorite.”. America already had difficulty trusting him because the last Strange she met and seemingly liked, nearly killed her. Defender Strange didn't trust her to be able to control her powers and prioritized the community of the multiverse over her which as discussed is the source of her anxiety. To be given validation from a Stephen Strange means that America Chavez can now begin living her life the way she chooses, because that trauma caused by Defender Strange’s betrayal and near murder, which perpetuated her lifelong anxiety, has been healed.
Through Stephen treating her with empathy, compassion and unconditional love America Chavez finally gained control over her own life and identity, which is encapsulated by him literally giving her control over how the conflict ends. she can now figure out who she wants to be, which gives new meaning to her being trained in Kamar-Taj. She is no longer defined by her role to the larger community of the Multiverse.
Third, I love how much their relationship actually builds off of his and Peter Parker’s throughout Infinity War up to NWH. Stephen Strange, despite how much he grew from an overt egotistical control freak in Doctor Strange (2016), was still ultimately willing and actually did, let a child die in order to save the universe.
“If it comes to saving you, or the kid, or the Time Stone...I will not hesitate to let either of you die.”
It was Stephen’s choice to let The Snap happen, to let Peter along with half of the universe die, and at the end of the day, cost Peter a father figure in Tony Stark. Stephen is in some small part responsible for the void Tony left that leads to Far From Home, but he still did it because he believed there was no other way out. A mentality that he didn’t let go of going into NWH.
“In the grand scheme of the multiverse, their sacrifice means infinitely more then their lives.”
That sentiment led to Stephen and Peter coming to blows because Stephen in NWH valued the wider community over the individual and didn’t look to find a compromise that included Peter’s altruistic worldview. And this mistake leads to him having to help Peter destroy his identity as 'Peter Parker' to save the world. But in MoM, Stephen gets to look after a kid who like Peter, lost their parents and had so many people hunting after them. But this time, he values her above the wider community. He redeemed his failure to look after Peter in Infinity War and NWH by saving and caring for America, along with giving her a home and guardians to look after her when he's busy. Stephen and Peter’s relationship subconsciously prepared him to have a more sympathetic heart for America, even if he doesn’t remember where he got it from. Thanks to Peter, Stephen can now be the pillar of support and love that Peter needed, but instead to someone else.
Fourth, I think the added canon information about Stephen’s sister Donna adds another layer to his relationship to America, along with Peter. Stephen lost Donna when they were kids and as such, the reason why he hated kids in the first place is because he saw them as irresponsible and reckless, which may be what he thought of himself after he couldn't save Donna. Like Marc Spector, he blamed himself for the loss of his sibling and desperately tried to stop that event from happening again by becoming a perfectionistic doctor, but instead of Marc just internalizing his pain to the point of questioning his right to live, Stephen projected those thoughts onto all kids. He transmitted his own self-disgust to them, because deep down he didn’t want them to make the same mistakes he made.
“You’ve always excelled, not because you crave success, but because of your fear of failure.”
“It’s what made me a great doctor.”
“It’s precisely what kept you from greatness. Arrogance and fear, still keep you from learning the most important lesson of all...it’s not about you.”
Which is why his relationship to America is so important. Through her, Stephen got to conquer his fear of failure: he fully "surrendered" control, trusting her to be able to beat Wanda.
“You cannot beat a river into submission. you have to surrender to it’s current, and use it’s power as your own.”
Infinity War/Endgame was a step in this, because while Stephen was relying on others to carry on what he started, he knew it would work based on both what he saw in the Time Stone, and the past track record of the Avengers: essentially a free fall knowing the safety net would eventually be placed there by professionals, whereas with America, he had only known her for at most a day, and she didn’t have the superhero track record. Yet he trusted her to be able to get there. He literally had to reanimate/possess a corpse of himself that "failed" in order to save her, finally embracing the idea that he could fail for the first time since losing Donna.
(also brings Agatha’s line from WandaVision: “kids...can’t control ‘em.” into new perspective, but that’s worth it’s own post)
Fifth, the reason he could trust America to do it is because, like father like daughter, she and Stephen are alike in many ways. She’s sassy, reckless (Stephen nearly opened a door to the Dark Dimension during his first go with the Time Stone), extremely powerful yet struggles with the most basic spells, fond of rule-breaking, and impatient. But it’s not just their surface level similarities, by the end of the movie, America quite literally takes after her dad in conflict resolution: by working smarter and not harder. Stephen used the Time Stone to outsmart Dormammu, and America used her portal powers to show Wanda the monster she was becoming (albeit with a little bit of punching).
And Sixth, she makes him smile, and makes him laugh. To be able to have fun and to laugh every once in a while, especially in a lonely job as his is important. Only Christine and Wong were able to do that, the people he values the most. (Im sorry, it just makes me so happy to see Stephen openly joking and laughing after so many years of being stoic)
In summary, I just love Stephen Strange & America Chavez, and I hope to god we get more of them in the, preferably immediate, future.
